Tedzig @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
Ted Leo

Speaking of Ted Leo, who just announced some shows.....

After some wondering and hinting, it actually happened... Glenn Danzig, who didn't have enough time to play his full Misfits set Friday night, showed up during Ted Leo's set at Fun Fun Fun Fest on Sunday! (sort of)

First Ted & the Pharmacists played their regular set, but it ended 10 minutes early and abruptly because Ted said he was cold (like Danzig was on Friday night). Ted quickly reappeared on stage though, but in a black wig complete with devil's lock, and full band including Andy Nelson (who was in town with both Ceremony and Paint it Black) on bass. Misfits (aka Misfits tribute band TV Casualty, 3/5th of them anyway) were in effect!

The tribute band played four Misfits tunes: "Where Eagles Dare," "Bullet," "Angelfuck", and "Skulls" which Tedzig preceded by saying he reads Facebook a lot and he knew some people at the fest really wanted to hear it. Check out the video of that one below.

TV Casualty, who have played live shows before, now also have a release (what perfect timing for all that to go down at the Austin Fest...)...

On October 31st, Matador [released] a charity 7" from Philadelphia's TV Casualty.

This is the first recorded document to be released by a collective made up of Brian Sokel (Franklin, AM/FM), Andy Nelson (Ceremony, Paint It Black), Atom Goren (Atom and His Package) & Chris Wilson (Ted Leo & the Pharmacists). Over the past few years the group has played out in and around Philly for different charitable events, assembling as The Ramones (with Rodney Anonymous), Black Flag (with Dan Yemin) and Minor Threat (with Mike McKee). Here, Ted Leo joins the band as Glen Danzig, in what else but their take on The Misfits (watch some past performances here)!

As part of Matador's famed ELO- catalogue series (confused? consult the discography), this blood-red 7" features covers of Children In Heat, Angelfuck, Teenagers From Mars, We Bite, Who Killed Marilyn, Some Kinda Hate. All proceeds collected on sales of this release will be donated on behalf of TV Casualty & Matador to The Attic Youth Center, Philadelphia's only LGBTQ Youth Center.

Order your copy via Matador. Check out Ted's tour dates HERE. See more pictures and a video of the Misfits tribute, below...

Samhain @ Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin
Danzig

Danzig, complete with Danzig, Samhain and Misfits sets, was supposed to play at 8:15pm at Fun Fun Fun Fest last night (11/4). He didn't finally get on stage until 9:00 which was especially noticeable at the Austin festival which otherwise runs completely on time. You could tell it wasn't the fest's fault too. During the entire 45 minute delay, Danzig's stagehands were constantly doing random stuff, most notably putting up blue tarps on either side of the stage - a clearly unplanned action that was apparently supposed to make the stage warmer. Around 8:45 a guy came out and started crossing songs off the setlist.

danzigfff3.jpg

People were booing loudly by the time Danzig finally took the stage.

All seemed to be forgiven though as the intro played and then Danzig belted out his first notes to the chilly and somewhat impatient crowd who were now cheering loudly. Glenn never said sorry for his tardiness though. He was also clearly struggling with his voice thoughout the set and did not seem comfortable on stage. He kept chewing things too (I figured for his throat). He ran off stage during the show twice - once to attack someone I think, and another time to "check the monitor".

After about 30 minutes of Danzig songs, they left the stage and came back with a new lineup to do Samhain which to me was the highlight of what we got. Danzig started the Samhain set masked (see above). Like in NYC, there were different backdrops for each set, but they were having some trouble getting them up and down - which only added to the disaster that was unfolding.

Around 9:50 it was Misfits time. The place went especially nuts as the massive presence that is Doyle entered the stage and they broke into it.

danzigfff6.jpg
danzigfff7.jpg

I was wondering what the curfew was, but optimistically thought maybe they were allowed to go later at this new venue (Auditorium Shores). Wrong. At 9:55 Danzig announces that they're shutting him down in 5 minutes. They had only played 1 Misfits song. He said "don't blame me" and asked the crowd if the organizers ever heard of "a thing called a riot" and urged the organizers to come on stage and tell the crowd themselves.

The crowd was obviously not happy, and Danzig was egging everyone on. By 10:00 we had only heard 2 Misfits songs and the set was over. All power was turned off on the stage. Did Danzig at this point apologize for coming on 45 minutes late? No, of course not. Instead he and the band stayed on stage for about 15 minutes longer riling the crowd up and acting like victims themselves.

danzigfff2.jpg

No chanting or threat of riot could get the power back on though and eventually Danzig and band left the stage for good. The crowd hung around though, for a little longer, chanting and throwing bottles on the stage until cops came in and urged eveyrone to go home. Despite screams of "pig" and a few bottles even hitting cops, the cops stayed calm and so did the crowd for the most part. Everyone eventually left.

The fest has since faced criticism for "shutting down Danzig" by some fans, and so FFFFest booker Graham Williams took to Facebook to tell his version of the story (as one commenter wrote, "I thought Big Freedia was the only Queen Diva supposed to be playing this festival!"). Read Graham's story along with some videos of it all, below...

Superchunk have recorded and released their cover of Misfits song "Where Eagles Dare" exclusively for Halloween 2011 as a free download! Grab it above.

(Danzig unfortunately did not play the song at Hammerstein Ballroom Saturday night).

Danzig played 29 songs at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on Saturday night (10/29). Advertised as the "Danzig Legacy tour", the show was split into three sets and two encores. He worked backwards. First set was Danzig songs, then Samhain and finally Misfits with Doyle in the band. Each set also had their own backdrop (see above).

Danzig does it again with Doyle (tonight) on Halloween in LA while Jerry and Dez's version of the Misfits are at BB King's in NYC, and then Danzig Legacy also plays Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin. The full NYC setlist and and hour long video from the 10/7 Chicago Riot Fest show, below...

With one photo, photographer Chris La Putt single-handedly unravels the entire Christian faith (more from 2010 Halloween Parade)
Halloween

Ahh.. Halloween in the city. An excuse to dress completely odd and get blackout drunk, so people can only remember "that Kenny Powers guy" puked himself. A massive parade... Oh did I mention the fun covers shows that go on?

Death By Audio will host an all ages covers show tonight (10/28) featuring Roky Erickson, The B-52s, Smashing Punpkins, Karp, X-Ray Spex, and The Raincoats as performed by Passive Agressor, Little Victory, Sleepies, Necking and others. $7 gets you in, or save $2 if you wear a costume!

The Acheron will host a night of Motorhead, Misfits, Blitz, White Zombie, and the "K-Rock All-Stars" at the venue on 10/30, featuring members of Tournament, Trenchgrinder, Grudges, and many more.

Speaking of the Misfits, the (sort of) actual band is playing on Halloween in NYC too, at BB King's (tickets). Now that is fucking scary. I'd much prefer to see Danzig Legacy at Hammerstein just two days earlier (10/29, tickets). Misfits are also playing Starland Ballroom TONIGHT (tickets).

If you don't want see either Misfits cover band, you have a THIRD Misfits alternative in The Omelettes of Disease at The Gutter who will join Bad Girlfriend (as The Cramps) and Tiberius (as Spaceman 3) on 10/29. $5 gets you in.

The previously discussed Black Lips/Davila666 show at Webster Hall tomorrow (10/29) is Halloween themed, and so is the "Psychedelic Robot Halloween Party" that same night at El Dorado (976 Grand St. Brooklyn) which will feature Jared Swilley (Black Lips) and AJ (Davila 666) behind the DJ booth. They'll be joined by perfromances from Sundelles, Snack Machine, Puppies, Mick's Jaguar (Rolling Stones covers), Bad Credit No Credit (X-Ray Spex Covers) and other DJ sets from O.J. San Felipe (Xray Eyeballs), Lady Bree, Yvo, Dan Meth, and Ben Ritter. As Bill mentioned, the $10 show also boasts "SUPER RAD SPECIAL MUSICAL GUESTS WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO NAME BUT ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT". Word. $10 bones gets you in, and details are at the Facebook page.

Though it isn't a Haloween event technically, it is frightening just the same. Vital Remains, Strong Intention, Prostitution, and Gang Signs will hit Saint Vitus. Tickets are on sale.

Glasslands will host a night of covers on Halloween as well, featuring locals performing Pentagram, B52's, Runaways, Suicide, Slade, Dead Kennedys, Creedence Clearwater Revival and others, followed by a DJ party with Johnathan Toubin. $1 gets you in.

Rocks Off is hosting a pre-Ween Halloween Cruise with Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers) on the turntables. Tickets are on sale.

FIXED is having a Halloween bash at Public Assembly on Monday.

And last but certainly not least, expect some dressing up at three Black Angels shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg this weekend including the 10/31 one with Psychic Ills and Exit Music. Don't forget to dress up! Tickets are still available for that show, as well as the 10/29 and 10/30 shows.

What else?

Tickets also just went on sale for for an October 23rd Gwar show. It's going to be a Happy Halloween (I just wish Pete Steele would come back from the grave and schedule a Type O show that week too).

The Danzig show is one of four 'Legacy' dates scheduled. He'll also hit Riotfest in Chicago, spend the actual Halloween at Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal City Walk in Universal City, CA and appear at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin (again).

Superchunk

We have a full post with pictures and review of last night's show at House of Vans coming, but meanwhile check out a video of 2/3 of Superchunk's encore, aka the part where (Off!'s) Keith Morris came out and performed Gimme Gimme Gimme (Black Flag) and Where Eagles Dare (Misfits) with Mac and band. It was pretty amazing (especially the Misfits part, no offense Keith). Video below...

Danzig

We previously discussed Phily's Riot Fest East that will feature an appearance from the mighty Descendents and The Suicide Machines who they also play with in NYC. Riot Fest East, an offshoot of the Chicago festival, happens on September 24th.

The Chicago version of the festival, October 5-9, previously announced that Weezer, Social Distortion, Descendents, 7 Seconds, ALL (two different eras!), Helmet, and X (playing Los Angeles) were all on the lineup, but left one big announcement for today...

On Friday October 7, 2011 Danzig will headline Riot Fest and perform a career spanning show featuring sets of Danzig, Samhain and Misfits songs with none other than Doyle joining on guitar the Misfits set. We've waited years for this and we can't wait to see the inside of the Congress Theater turn into a churning sea of humanity.
Tickets for both Riot Fest Chicago and Riot Fest East are now on sale, and more band announcements are stil to come(!).

Tickets are now also on sale for the Descendents show at Roseland Ballroom that Suicide Machines and H20 are opening.

X are performing Los Angeles at both Riot Fests AND on two nights at Irving Plaza in NYC. Tickets are on sale for those shows too.

Riot Fest show flyers and some videos is below.

The Dwarves at Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by Tim Griffin)
The Dwarves

"THE DWARVES were kicked off tour with Motorhead for sleeping with the girls the aging metalheads had hired to hang out backstage. The Dwarves are celebrating 25 years of mischief with a new collection with songs titles like "The Dwarves Are Still The Best Band Ever", "We Only Came To Get High", and "Happy Birthday Suicide"...

Steve Ignorant rehearsing earlier this month
Steve Ignorant

In other news, after a stutter a few weeks ago, TONIGHT (4/20) marks the return of Steve Ignorant to the U.S. to play Crass songs at Europa. Dog That Bites Everyone Thulsa Doom,A.P.P.L.E., and Goldblade open the Brooklyn show... though there is a rumor that Goldblade, who are supporting on the whole tour, may not get here in time for tonight's show due to visa issues (update: rumour confirmed as true) (maybe you caught them at Southpaw in 2003). if not, they will hopefully make it soon though, and definitely in time for the sold-out Santos Party House 'Crass songs' show on 5/8. Tickets for tonight's Europa show are still available, and a full list of Steve Ignorant tour openers is below (Santos has Goldblade, Cult Of Youth and Primitive Weapons).

Also tonight (4/20), strangely, ex-Black Flag/current-Misfits-er Dez Cadena will hit Park Slope venue Union Hall with his band Dez Cadena & The Broken Down Bitches, as well as The Slants and Lunic. Tickets are still available.

Speaking Black Flag, two Black Flag vocalists (Henry Rollins & Keith Morris with his band Off!) will share one stage (Terminal 5) as part of a show/tour with Dinosaur Jr. Since that show was announced, Off! also announced even more tour dates which are listed below.

And while we're on the subject, former Misfits vocalist Glenn Danzig heads out on a tour that hits Starland Ballroom in his birth state next month. The current version of the Misfits play Festival For Humanity in Vernon, NJ on May 27th.

In more modern punk news (and other "Off" news), Off With Their Heads will team with Dead To Me for a string of US dates surrounding their appearance at Best Friends Day, including Knitting Factory on August 4th with The Holy Mess and Brian Bruner. Tickets are on sale.

And last and probably least, CJ Ramone will play The Studio at Webster Hall on July 9th, performing "an all Ramones set with Ramones producer Daniel Rey on guitar". Tickets are on sale. Joey Ramone died a little more than 10 years ago, and his birthday will again be celebrated at Irving Plaza in May.

All tour dates and that Dwarves stream is below.

Art for the Superchunk/Coliseum split
Superchunk/Coliseum split art

Now that Coliseum has given their epic Goddamage EP a revamp (a must, if you don't have it already), the band is currently tearing up the streets of the EU with Rise Against. After returning from that trek, Ryan Patterson & the boys will hit the US highways/byways for a string of US dates that will include NYC twice: May 14th at Public Assembly with Gods & Queens & May 15th at Union Pool with The Austerity Program. Both shows are presented by BrooklynVegan/1000Knives.

Coliseum are waving their (black) flag in support of Record Store Day, and will team up with Superchunk to release a split 7" of Misfits covers. Limited to 2000 copies in three colorways (yellow, magenta, black), Superchunk will take on "Horror Business" while Coliseum tears down "Bullet". The 7" is not the first time that Coliseum has paid tribute to Danzig, as Coliseum teamed up with Doomriders in 2005 to record the Not of This World split of Danzig covers for Level Plane.

Coliseum is also teaming up with Burning Love (ex-Cursed, hitting the road with Converge in May) for another split, this time a live record recorded at the Atlantic in Gainesville, Florida in 2010. Sound Study Recordings will release the limited LP of 1000 copies, with a CD version due via Tee Pee with bonus tracks (and also limited to 1000). You can see the cover art for that, below.

All tour dates and some videos below...

Bad Religion circa Suffer
Bad Religion

Bad Religion are back on the loose, and have a new LP due on 9/28 via (Weezer's new home) Epitaph, The Dissent of Man (preorder it). Tracks new and old will be on display when the band plays Roseland Ballroom on 10/20 and Starland Ballroom on 10/22 (ticket info forthcoming), as part of a larger tour for the punk rock legends that will include an appearance at Riot Fest and Fun Fun Fun Fest.

UPDATE:
Bad Religion is playing three nights at Irving Plaza instead of a single show at Roseland Ballroom

So far Bouncing Souls and Off With Their Heads are confirmed for all OTHER dates (not FFF, or NY & NJ) including a show at Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY on 10/12... will they be added to Roseland? Unsure, but we do know that Bouncing Souls WILL play a sold out Music Hall of Williamsburg and a sold out Rocks Off Cruise (hopefully) on Sep 12th and 13th respectively. Off With Their Heads released their new LP In Desolation in June.

While we're on the subject of upcoming punk shows, The Studio at Webster Hall has a pair of 'em worth looking into. First up, Guttermouth will play The Studio at Webster Hall TONIGHT with The New Threat and World War IX. Tickets are on sale.

Riverboat Gamblers will also be at the venue a couple weeks later (Sept 2nd) before they hit the road with Pennywise, tickets are on sale. Misery Obscura by Eerie Von
Eerie Von, Misery Obscura

We are a little past a week since Danzig played Starland Ballroom with Gorgeous Frankenstein and Seventh Void. Original Danzig bassist, Samhain-er, and part-time Misfit Eerie Von was not on board for that show, but you can catch him at Generation Records on 1/8 when he appears/performs (country music?) in celebration of Misery Obscura: The Photography of Eerie Von 1981 - 2009.

Misery Obscura gives fans unique insight into the punk and metal scene of the 1980s and early 90s from the perspective of one of it's greatest stars, chronicling the rise of The Misfits, Rosemary's Baby, Danzig, and Samhain through the worldwide success of the punk and metal scene as they tour with acts like Metallica and White Zombie.
The shindig kicks off at 7PM and features an acoustic performance from Eerie Von, backed by Lyle Preslar (Minor Threat) and Mike D'Antonio (Killswitch Engage). Eerie Von and designer Tom Bejgrowicz will be signing copies of the book, which you can preorder to reserve a spot for the show. Dark Horse has a few pages of the book that you can preview. Flyer and more event info below...

"December 26th DANZIG Show Rumors are TRUE" - Michale Graves

MisfitsMisfits

The "American Psycho" lineup of the resurrected MISFITS (minus Jerry Only) will be reuniting for a one-time performance at the Starland Ballroom in Sayerville, New Jersey on Saturday, December 26. Headlining the show will be DANZIG.

The reunited MISFITS will include vocalist Michale Graves, guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein and drummer Dr. Chud. Bassist Jerry Only will not be participating, but Argyle Goolsby of BLITZKID/GORGEOUS FRANKENSTEIN fame will there to add the low end.

Vocalist Michale Graves has been busy touring with MARKY RAMONE'S BLITZKRIEG as well as supporting his recent live acoustic album, "Illusions Live/Viretta Park", which is available via Screaming Crow Records.

"This is more of the MISFITS then anyone has ever seen in almost 10 years," says Graves. "75 percent of the band reunited on stage in New Jersey opening for the man truly responsible for all this horror business?! I am confident that this will provide fans a real taste of what the MISFITS truly were and could have been!" [Blabbermouth]

I thought there might some kind of Misfits reunion at the show, but I didn't think it would be with Michael Graves singing... So like, just to clarify, here is a list of all the Misfits singers:
1) Glenn Danzig - Lead vocals (1977-1983)
2) Michale Graves - Lead vocals (1995-2000)
3) Jerry Only - Bass guitar (1977-1983, 1995-present), lead vocals (2001-present)
Jerry Only is the current singer of the "Misfits" aka the band you would be going to see if you ever bought tickets to a Misfits show in the present day. Jerry, and his drummer Robo (a member of the band from 1982-1983, and from 2005-present) will likely NOT be at the Starland show because they wouldn't really be welcome.
According to a report from Cleveland Scene, there were apparently plans underway for a proper reunion between the Misfits and their estranged singer-songwriter, Glenn Danzig. However, according to an interview with former Misfits guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein:

We were actually going to do a Misfits reunion with Glenn. But Jerry put a fuckin' monkey wrench in it. [In] 2002, we had meetings ... And [Jerry] kind of fucked it up, him and his manager. We were going to do a record, do a tour and everything. So let all the Misfits fans put that in their pipe and smoke it.

Over the years since 2002, rumors have always emerged that Danzig would reunite with his former bandmates, but the singer always vigorously denied them. In fact, during the lead up to the singer's 2005 Blackest of the Black tour, Glenn noted: "It's the closest thing to a Misfits reunion anyone is ever going to see!" [PunkNews]

Glenn Danzig, aka the real and original singer of the Misfits, has been doing mini Misfits reunion sets with Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein (who happens to be Jerry's brother) since 2005 (as noted above). Doyle, who is now in Gorgeous Frankenstein with Dr Chud, was the Misfits bassist from 1980-1983 (with Glenn) and from 1995-2001 (with Michael Graves).

Glenn and Doyle do the special Misfits sets in addition to playing with their respective bands who would be on the same bill....such as during the 2005 Blackest of the Black tour... and much like lineup at Starland Ballroom tonight (12/26)... where I'm hoping they do it again in addition to the confirmed Michale Graves reunion which is weird - especially since they're sharing a bill with Glenn...

Maybe Glenn will play with Doyle in addition to the Michale Graves set? Maybe Glenn will come out and play with Michale, Dr. Chud (Misfits drummer from 1995-2000) and Doyle? Or maybe Doyle will just come out and play during Danzig's set? No matter what, it's going to be an interesting night and a family affair... Even the first band on the bill, Seventh Void, features a member of Danzig's band (Johnny Kelly who is also in Type O Negative).

Tickets are still on sale.

A "Danzig vs Michale Graves" video, two versions of the show flyer and more info below...

Continue reading "Michale Graves version of the Misfits reuniting (sort of) @ Starland Ballroom Danzig show (TONIGHT)..."

Mika Miko

The show was outside, in the afternoon, and it was raining. Even worse, the band forgot their telephone mic in LA! Neither of those factors stopped Mika Miko from putting on a great 2nd-to-last (unless they add more) punk show at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin on Sunday (11/8). "This will be the last time you see us... or maybe the first time..." they announced to the crowd, though I'm sure at least some people in attendance (like No Age for instance) will be at their very last show at the Smell (whenever they have it). As previously posted...

"In sad news for telephone-microphone hybrid fans everywhere, the L.A. art-punk quintet Mika Miko is calling it a day. The group, known for its breakneck rhythms, trashy guitar riffs and the slumber-party romp of its dueling vocalists, will wrap up their career after playing Austin's Fun Fun Fun Festival and, according to a band representative, a last 7-inch single and a show at the Smell."
[LA Times]
Co-vocalist Jennifer Clavin, when not moving to the side with a guitar, spent most of the show center stage with a mic and tambourine. She cleverly wore a Misfits shirt while performing on the very stage that Danzig would headline on six hours later (Mika Miko are also known to cover the Misfits).

Co-vocalist and saxophone player Jenna Thornhill did just fine with a standard microphone, both at this show, and later in the day when she played with her new band, the Strange Boys. Drummer Seth Densham is also now in both bands (but more about that later).

To add to the specialness of the show, many of Mika Miko's friends supported on the side of the stage including both members of No Age (who performed on day one of the festival) (Dean Spunt and Jennifer also happen to be a couple). Mika Miko encouraged everyone to crowd surf. One kid did so with the help of a skateboard. Dean even stage dove - over the security/photo pit, and into the crowd where he watched some of the show from the front row. He returned to the stage in time for the ending though. There were hugs all around and everyone was really wet and muddy. More pictures below...

Danzig O' Lantern (joebeone)
DAnzig

It's been a long time since Chuck Biscuits played drums for Danzig, but his NOT-sad passing reminded me that Danzig has some shows coming up. Not only is he one of the headliners at this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest (coming very soon to Austin), but he'll be back in his home state for a show on the day after Christmas (when he'll probably be visiting mom). Tickets are on sale now for the show at Starland Ballroom.

One of the openers at the NJ show will be Doyle's band Gorgeous Frankenstein which means maybe Glenn and Doyle will do some Misfits songs together again. The other opener is Seventh Void whose members include Kenny Hickey (guitar) and Johnny Kelly (drums) of Type O Negative. They both also usually play in Danzig's band so I'm guessing that will be the case at this show too.

Seventh Void are currently on tour with Type O Negative, and opened the shows at Starland Ballroom and Nokia Theatre earlier this month. Seventh Void play their own show at Trash Bar in Brooklyn on November 21st.

"Misfits" (no Doyle. no Danzig) play Starland Ballroom on Friday night (Mischief Night), and then BB King's on Halloween (tickets).

Saint Vitus @ Roadburn (the decline 88)
Saint Vitus

Hey doom fans! Are you sitting down? The legendary Saint Vitus has announced three east coast dates, including Europa in Brooklyn on Oct 16th. According to Blabbermouth, "these dates will mark frontman Scott "Wino" Weinrich's (THE OBSSESSED, WINO, SPIRIT CARAVAN, PLACE OF SKULLS, THE HIDDEN HAND, PROBOT) first appearances in these cities with SAINT VITUS since 1987!" Tickets for the NYC show are on sale (though there seems to be a problem with Ticketweb at the moment). Support is still TBA, though Type O Negative and the "Misfits" (who are playing BB King's on Halloween) are opening the October 17th show in Worcester (weird lineup). We'll keep you posted when more details surface.

DAvid PajoDAvid PajoDAvid Pajo

David Pajo is actually out on tour with Gene Ween which means you can catch him opening the show Wednesday at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and again the day after that at Highline Ballroom. Tonight/Sunday Gene doesn't have a show though, and David is using his day off to headline the Knitting Factory's Old Office space. Men and Women, Hard Bop and 1200 Trees are also on the bill. In related news, David is putting out a Misfits cover record. He explains...

I'll explain more after the record comes out, but basically I recorded a bunch of misfits songs at a friend's house with a radio shack mic duct taped to a cymbal stand into one of those 70s handheld cassette recorders (back when they had huge hands). it sounded like shit. I was recording the songs to get warmed up (I was about to start work on what became the PAJO record). I usually pick a songwriter that I like and learn some of their songs to get into the mindset. who better than glenn danzig?!

this was in 2004. I forgot all about it but somehow that tape circulated. chan marshal told me she heard it at a photo session a few years ago. it moved to the west coast. it had kids, formed governments, started revolutions. my friend dirk asked me if he could release it on vinyl.

hellz yeh, I replied.

Angelfuck is streaming at MySpace. All dates below...

No Age

Titus Andronicus

No Age, now on tour, headlined Market Hotel in Brooklyn on Monday night (11/10). Like they did one night earlier at Santos Party House, Titus Andronicus opened, except this time they were joined by special guest and fellow NJ resident Ted Leo for a cover of NJ band Misfits' "Where Eagles Dare". This is the same cover Titus played with NJ's Yo La Tengo during a NJ pride moment at Brooklyn venue McCarren Pool's final free show over the summer.

No Age's set got especially crazy towards the end as people started getting trampled and knocked over as other people were charging towards the stage. Soft Circle and Sisters opened the show.

Titus just announced a tour with Los Campesinos!. More pictures from Market Hotel, including one of No Age's setlist, below...

Misfits?

"...The Misfits have always held an incredibly high standard of performance and quality in everything we do. Our fans expect this and deserve it. I will not compromise their expectations for any amount of money, prestige or fame....."
Lets play a guessing game. Is the quote:
  • A) Spoken by Glenn Danzig with respect to the reformation of The Misfits.
  • B) Spoken by Jerry Only with respect to The Misfits dropping off the previously mentioned Volcom Tour.
  • C) Part of a longer quote where Jerry Only also hawked Misfits-brand pomade ("when you absolutely positively must have that perfect devilock!")
If you answered B, sadly, you are correct (although, C isn't far off). The Misfits have dropped off a tour with Motorhead and Valient Thorr, but added a pair of NYC-area shows: Halloween ("hall-low-waaay-ay-ayne") at BB Kings and November 1st at Starland Ballroom in NJ (ticket info currently unavailable). The Misfits 2008 are Jerry Only, Robo (also ex-Black Flag) and Dez Cadena (ex-Black Flag).

Danzig is gearing up for the Blackest Of The Black Tour with Dimmu Borgir and Skeletonwitch, including one date at Roseland on 10/15 (tix still avail). We're not sure if there will be another Danzig+Doyle Misfits set on this tour (probably not).

Both Danzig and "Misfits" touring and playing NYC shows around Halloween is somewhat of a tradition. All dates below...

NJ Ira (this photo by Paul Bachmann)
Yo La Tengo @ McCarren Pool

I'm always running late, so I unfortunately didn't get to the Pool on Sunday (Aug 24, 2008) until Yo La Tengo was about to go on. That was right around the time they also shut the gates for being at capacity. It was also when I saw Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz walk in. I heard he was supposed to introduce Yo La Tengo, but he got there a minute too late.

Yo La Tengo are such a great live band - from beginning to end, but the highlight of my 90 minutes at the Pool (which were also the final 90 minutes of JellyNYC's 3-year run of Pool Parties at McCarren) was, when during Yo La Tengo's encore, fellow NJ band Titus Andronicus joined them on stage to do a cover of "Where Eagles Dare" by Misfits (who were also from NJ) ("I ain't no goddamn son of a bitch, You better think about it baby"). Ira announced that now that Brooklyn was over (a joke referring to the end of the pool), NJ is where it's at. Titus' frontman also held up a NJ flag in Jersey's honor and then draped it over Ira's back (see above).

Obama was barely in the house. More of Jason's pictures below...

young Danzig & Doyle (CRED)
Danzig & Doyle

You'll remember that towards the end of October Danzig fell off the stage at a show in Baltimore causing the almost-cancellation of the NYC show at Nokia Theatre that did end up happening four nights later. At the time I wasn't sure if I should go see Danzig and Doyle at Nokia that night, or Jens Lekman at Webster Hall instead. As I mentioned, I ended up getting to see both. I missed the first few songs of Danzig's set, but it was awesome nonetheless. Even in his arm cast (which I wish I had a picture of, but I don't), he completely rocked as usual. And though not as exciting as the first two times, even the Misfits set at the end with original Misfit Doyle Von Frankenstein was great too. Check out that classic picture of young Danzig and Doyle above. Check out the video of Danzig falling off the stage (4 minutes in), below....
