538 Johnson for The Men in 2011 (more by Keith Marlowe)
Looks like there's some trouble for Bushwick DIY venue 538 Johnson. They posted:
Surprise, surprise our landlords at 538 don't love us. They recently hit us with a bunch of wild and crazy fines that added up to an exorbitant amount of money. Pretty shady stuff. Unfortunately the only way we can keep the space is to pay them, and we need some help from "the scene." 538 has been hosting some pretty good shows for quite some time. We want you to be able to keep trashing our home. Hallway punks forever, please come support. The venue, that's housed early NYC gigs for The Men, Merchandise, White Lung, The Menzingers and many others, will be hosting a benefit show this Sunday (9/21) with wild punks Dawn of Humans, melodic noise artist Pharmakon, hardcore crew Missionary, garagey punks Ivy, and Cheena.
You can catch Ivy again on October 11 at Acheron with Warthog, Bad Noids, Party Plates and Mr. California (tickets); and October 25 at Palisades with Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Blazing Eye, Savageheads, L.O.T.I.O.N. and Face the Rail (tickets). If you haven't heard Ivy's new self-titled LP on Katorga Works you can download it for free HERE and order the vinyl HERE.

Boston hardcore band Peacebreakers -- who feature members of The Boston Strangler, Scapegoat, Blank Stare and more -- are about to play Toronto's Not Dead Yet Fest, and not long after that they'll come to NYC for an early-hours matinee (starting at 4pm) at the Acheron on December 7. For that show they'll meet up with fellow Boston band MFP and Richmond toughs Mercy Killings (feat. members of Wasted Time). BK locals Missionary will provide early support. Tickets are on sale now.

Hank Wood & the Hammerheads
Montreal punk/hardcore festival Varning is returning for its seventh year from November 7-9 at MTL venue Katacombes. A bunch of NYC bands will be there, like Hank Wood & the Hammerheads, Nuclear Spring, La Misma and more, plus Sweden's Institution, Portland's Criminal Damage, San Francisco's Ruleta Rusa (ex-Born/Dead and Peligro Social whose last show was Varning VI), Boston bands Bloodkrow Butcher and Koward, and many more. Full lineup and flyer below. Advance tickets will be available through 10/28 via paypal with the firstname.lastname@example.org email address. More info here.
A number of those bands have NYC shows coming up ahead of the fest too. Nuclear Spring don't at the moment, but related band Failed States are playing with two Bloodkrow Butcher-related bands, The Combat Zone and Lude Boys, on Friday (10/25) at Fitness (1196 Myrtle Ave). NYC's MIssionary and dark W Mass mid-tempo punks Longings are on the bill too.
The actual Bloodkrow Butcher team up with Ruleta Rusa and La Misma, plus two Canadian bands that aren't billed for this year's Varning Fest -- Montreal's Omegas and Toronto's S.H.I.T. -- for a show at Acheron on November 2. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
The super-fun, Farfisa-loving punks Hank Wood & the Hammerheads team up with Koward and NYC goths Anasazi for a show on November 7 at 538 Johnson.
And speaking of Anasazi, they play another local show on 11/20 at Acheron with Green Beret, Condition, Rank and The Three Muskateers (mem. of Perdition and Nomad). Tickets for that show are on sale now.

As mentioned, on Saturday (8/17) The Acheron will host The Impalers with Vaaska, Back to Back and Missionary, part of the Impalers/Vaaska tour. Its a night of ripping hardcore/punk and surely worth the piddling $8 at the door. But even if you can't swing it, you can STILL see the show by entering to win a pair of tickets. Details on how to win are below.
Don't forget that every week, you can tune into Invisible Oranges on East Village Radio on Tuesday at 10 PM Eastern to listen for the latest and greatest in the heavy underground. If you missed it, check out this week's episode with Pitchfork editor Brandon Stosuy in the EVR archives and you can check out the playlist too. Tune in Tuesday (8/20) at 10PM ET.
Meanwhile, in the past week on InvisibleOranges we checked out new tracks from Pinkish Black, Twilight of the Gods, Pentagram (Chile) and Grave. We also took time out to review the Aerial Ruin / Stevie Floyd split and the new Fyrnask, as well as get really hyped on Vhol's current tour.
For more metal/hardcore/punk shows, head to our fancy new NYC Metal Show Calendar. It rules.
Details on how to win tickets and a stream of some Impalers material, plus the entirety of the Integrity Palm Sunday video from 2006, are below.
