Huotron

At first glance, it could be said that Huoratron (that's whore-a-tron) is going for the "sex sells" contingent; the sublimely NSFW video for "Corporate Occult" (viewable below) falls somewhere in between Paris Hilton-style night-vision porno, Paranormal Activity, and a goth-y horror flick. But unlike anything by Katy Perry, the sex-begets-commerce element falls aside after the booming, distorted bass kicks in. Fans of an instrumental Crystal Castles and Ed Banger-style beats, pay attention.

Huoratron is the nom de plume of Finland's Aku Raski, who released the Prevenge EP via Last Gang Records earlier this year. Chock full of blackened, distorted electro beats, the EP features both the original "Corporate Occult" track and the Mixhell remix. It does not contain the Deathface Remix though, which is downloadable and streamable below for the first time.

Huoratron is now on tour and will perform live at Webster Hall in NYC on November 12th with Felguk and Skrillex. Tickets are on sale.

Prefuse 73 @ LPR
Prefuse 73

David Ellis' exhibition at (Le) Poisson Rouge is a misnomer. It consists of a handful of sculptures wrought from records (and their sleeves) that are neat bits of ornamental design but that don't invite any kind of reflection. The same is true of his "movement sculpture", which comes off like a sneaker commercial. Perhaps noticing this, someone tacked on a looped playback of Ellis' collaboration with Italian street artist Blu.

The opening was followed by a show with performances by Prefuse 73, Jon Hopkins and MIXHELL. Not much happened. The high point turned out to be a set of horror-inspired stuff from Jon Hopkins, in which he used the venue's cavernous interior and well-spread speaker system to creepy and then chest-rattling effect. Prefuse 73 played a rambling, messy set that was disappointing coming from such royalty. One sequence, a sustained sampling of guitar solos (including some Hendrix), was smart if totally undanceable. He was probably just drunk, or bored, as were we." [Dossier]

For Jon Hopkins it was his first of three NYC shows in three days. One of his other shows was opening for The xx at Bowery Ballroom.

MIXHELL (aka Iggor Cavalera of Sepultura) plays as duo with his wife and alternates between the DJ booth and a drum set. We're not sure what he did at the free LPR show on Tuesday night though (because Vincent needed to take off before his late set) .

And MIXHELL may be a DJ now, but he hasn't forgotten his metal roots. Check out the new mixtape he made under the name of his new side project, Black Metal Soundsystem, above.

Prefuse 73 @ Terminal 5 in November 2008 (more by Zach Stern)
Prefuse 73

David Ellis is an artist born into a family immersed in music. His paintings are often recorded in a form of digital time-lapse animation he calls motion painting. Like jazz, these works provide Ellis with an opportunity to combine ideas with collaborators and work solo within a form that promotes improvisation and spontaneity.

Ellis often stages events when exhibiting his motion paintings, inviting musicians, performers, and sound artists to interpret the work live. His motion painting, Paint on Trucks in a World in Need of Love was exhibited at MoMA. Ellis further explores sound with kinetic installations that produce analogue sequences in rhythm. His latest work, often in collaboration with composer Roberto Lange, deconstructs the inner workings of player pianos to create sprawling sculptures that automatically play percussive rhythms with recycled typewriters, buckets, bottles and cans.

(Le) Poisson Rouge is hosting an opening party for David Ellis: Recollect on Tuesday, November 10th. Performing at the free show (besides Ellis himself) will be Prefuse 73, Jon Hopkins and Mixhell.

Not free, but also a party at (Le) Poisson Rouge, Buraka Som Sistema are back. Maluca and DJ Geko Jones open the show which takes place at the West Village venue TONIGHT (11/4) @ 11pm. Be prepared to stay out late.

All Buraka Som Sistema dates, a video of Ellis painting a piece and a song from Prefuse's latest LP, Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian, which came out earlier this year, and more below...

DANCE

A cold has prevented me from hitting many a dancefloor so far this week. As I mentioned at the end of part 1 of the Week In Dance, Micachu & The Shapes play the second New York show on their tour, at Le Poisson Rouge tonight (10/2). Check out a video of Tim Exile (who played Santos Thursday night) remixing Micachu & The Shapes, live, below and don't forget that following the Micachu show Martyn, Kotchy, Starkey, DJ Sharmaji, and Samiyam will also be at Le Poisson Rouge (11pm, now changed to 21+).

Felix Cartal @ Webster Hall - February 27, 2009 (Nicky Digital)
dance

There was quite a bit going on last week, but I hardly went to any of it. I did most of my getting down at the David Byrne show Saturday night at Radio City, which I (unlike Jon Pareles) found to be a great show.

On my way home from David's show Friday night I found myself at the Studio at Webster Hall just to buy a friend a birthday drink. I caught some of Futurecop's set, but it was a bit too much, too soon after David Byrne for me to absorb any of it or make any judgment.

Fortunately I wound up sticking around and getting my ears used to hearing electronic music long enough to realize Felix Cartal was tearing it up. His set was full of bangers, many of which I hadn't heard before. One was a remix/mash-up of Daft Punk's "Oh Yeah" and "Rollin' & Scratchin'" that was sick and featured a weird little vocal periodically saying "rollin' & scratchin!". As good as Felix's set was, I was exhausted and left before he was done.

This week is brimming with good deejays and I am almost glad I won't be around to have to make any of these decisions you're going to face, specifically for Friday & Saturday night. Here's what's happening:

Cut Copy @ Mercury Lounge, NYC - Mar 17, 2008 (Tixgirl)
Cut Copy @ Mercury Lounge

This week in dance kicked off with a great show on Monday at the Mercury Lounge with the NYC-debut of Spain's el Guincho and a set by Australia's brilliant, live electro band Cut Copy.

The band has a refreshingly straightforward style about sharing their electro-rock tracks, offering little in the way of theatrics. But lead vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist Dan Whitford is willing to offer his appreciation to the crowd and acknowledge the impending electro climaxes, giving the audience the green light to go nuts-and it works. [TheMusic.FM]
If you missed them, they're back in May, and this weekend looks equally promising with some big names passing through town.

Pink SkullIn addition to the great Palms Out Sound showcase going on at Luna Lounge tonight (Thursday March 20), Musebox is holding their monthly at 205 featuring Pink Skull, James F!@$%^ Friedman and Johnny Cocco, and it's $5 at the door or free if you RSVP now at rsvp@themusebox.net. While Pink Skull is just deejaying, and not doing one of their energetic live performances, the band's diverse influences, numerous side projects, and recent remixes should provide the makings of a good set.

Just a few days after this show Brooklyn-based independent 12" and digital-only label the Savant Guard will make it's worldwide debut release with Pink Skull's single 'Drugs Will Keep Us Together' on March 24th. It will feature the original version of the track along with a remix that New York's own 33Hz did with Ming (from dj duo Ming+FS). Fidget house master Trevor Loveys also puts his own spin on the track. You can download the original version over at Missingtoof and stream the remixes here.

Mixhell

Iggor Cavalera is recognized throughout the world as a master drummer and former member of none other than Brazilian heavy-metal band Sepultura. However, he is as much familiar with turntables and MPCs and he is with a drum kit, taking his credo of Hard Beat Beat and applying it to other projects. As Mixhell, he and his wife, Laima Leyton, combine dancefloor and hard rock sensibilities for DJ sets as unpredictable as Cavalera's musical career. Only scan the enormous tracklisting below for proof. [XLR8R]
RSVP to see Mixhell with Moby (DJ set) & Drop the Lime TONIGHT (Feb 14) @ Hiro Ballroom in NYC. More dates below....
