Megadeth

Megadeth's Gigantour set played like most of their festival appearances of the past year- a greatest hits of their career with a few surprises peppered in. As longtime fans of Megadeth, their catalog of songs are all extremely solid live. But while the band never disappoints, we feel fortunate that Megadeth still exists at all considering all that Mustaine and the boys have been through physically and emotionally over the past decade. At around nine thirty the stage went dark and Shawn Drover's unmistakable drum beats crashed for the opener "Trust," from the 'Cryptic Writings' album. "Trust," albeit not as hard as the rest of their catalog is a perfect opener...

At one point Mustaine had Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia come out on stage to sing, "À Tout le Monde (Set Me Free)" with him. It was a fantastic duet of a classic, and the first time I've ever seen Mustaine sing with a female. Besides being one of the best shredders in the business, this dude can harmonize with the best of them. Along with these rare on stage moments, fans got the red meat they wanted with staples such as, "Hanger 18″, "Wake Up Dead," and "Symphony of Destruction," all of which were played to perfection. -[Local Bozo]

Gigantour, which continues at Glens Falls Civic Center tomorrow night (2/1), rolled into NYC on Saturday (1/28) at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden with apperances from Megadeth, the legendary Motorhead, Lacuna Coil and Volbeat. Pictures/setlists from that show (sans shots of Lacuna Coil, though there are some of Cristina on stage with Dave) are in this post. More of them with some videos, the setlists and all dates, below....

Würzel with Motorhead, far left.
Wurzel

Motörhead guitarist Michael "Würzel" Burston died yesterday at the age of 61 after a struggle with heart disease. Würzel was a member of the British metal band between 1984 and 1996, and performed on seven of the group's albums including Orgasmatron, 1916 and March ör Die. In addition to his work with Motörhead, the guitarist recorded two solo albums, Bess and Chill Out or Die (The Ambient Album), and was more recently working on music with his new band, Leader of Down.
Motorhead was a four-piece for the duration of his tenure with the band. Following his departure they returned to their original formation of a trio. R.I.P. Würzel.

As previously discussed, this weekend is the Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama (May 20-22, 2011). As we wrote, "Hang Out Music Fest is heavy on the jam bands, but will also feature appearances from Paul Simon, The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, Foo Fighters, Motorhead, Cee Lo, Girl Talk, Minus The Bear, El Mariachi Bronx and many more over its three days." If you can't be there, iClips will be streaming performances online all weekend.

Speaking of Paul Simon, his tour just got bigger with the addition of another NYC show.

Speaking of My Morning Jacket and streaming, they'll be streaming a live show on May 31st directed by Todd Haynes.

Speaking of Foo Fighters, Motorhead and El Mariachi Bronx, BBG writes, "there's something wrong with the world when Motorhead is hitting the road supporting Foo Fighters, but nevertheless they're doing that right now with Biffy Clyro. Those dates include a showing at the Hangout Festival and conclude when Foo Fighters hit Sasquatch on May 27th."

Foo Fighters are also planning a trip to the Northeast, and have announed more dates that include one in the NYC-area at Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ on 9/26. Tickets go on sale 5/20 at 10AM and support at the NJ date, as with all dates on that leg, will come from Rise Against (who just played T5 twice two weeks ago with Bad Religion) and Mariachi el Bronx (who recently played Highline Ballroom, are also playing Hangout, and are playing a boat as the Bronx).

All FF tour dates and some video is below.

Motorhead

Not long after passing through both Starland Ballroom in NJ and Best Buy Theater in Times Square, the Motorhead / Clutch / Valient Thorr tour hit House of Blues in the gambling capital of NJ. No Valient Thorr, but pictures from the rest of the 3/4 House of Blues show continue below...

Doro Pesch & Lemmy in Times Square
Motorhead

"When you're at a Motorhead show there is only one thing to do, get yourself lost in the music and follow the rhythm of the crowd. The vibrations of the amplifiers, the feedback, the music, and your aggression guide your body. All body functions like hunger, sweat, fatigue, your bladder, don't exist at a Motorhead show. It's only when the music ends you realize you have to drain, which is how a good old fashioned rock show is supposed to be.

Other highlights of the night was the New York return of Mikkey Dee, who absent the last time they came around due to a comittment to the Swedish version of "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here," Lemmy's shout out to 1983 (the year I was born), and last but certainly not least, Doro Pesch (of Warlock fame) joining the band for "Killed by Death."" [Examiner]

The Motorhead, Clutch & Valient Thorr tour continues at House of Blues in Atlantic City tonight (3/4). It hit Best Buy Theater in Times Square on 2/28, and a set of pictures from that show, Motorhead's setlist included, continues below...

Motorhead

If you missed it during its brief theatrical run, Lemmy, 49% Motherfucker, 51% Son Of A Bitch is out TODAY (2/15) on DVD and Blu-ray. The release paints the Motorhead/Hawkwind badass as a simple man who loves his trivia, Jack Daniels, and Marshall stacks turned to 11, but more importantly is an excellent portrait of a rock n roll icon. If you are a fan of metal, punk, Motorhead, or sleazy rock n'roll, it's worth a look. Pick up a copy today, or try your luck at winning one! Details are below.

Lemmy and Motorhead are currently on the road with Clutch & Valient Thorr. The tour hits Best Buy Theater in NYC on 2/28 (tickets), Starland Ballroom in NJ on 3/3 (tickets), and the House of Blues in Atlantic City on 3/4 for those who like to gamble (tickets).

Lemmy of Motorhead at Roseland (more by Chris La Putt)
Motorhead

Motorhead will hit the road for "The Wörld is Yours 2011", a tour with Clutch scheduled in the new year, tagging Best Buy Theater in NYC on February 28th and Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on March 3rd. Ticketing info for both shows is forthcoming.

The start of the tour coincides with the opening of the new film LEMMY: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch:

Over four decades, Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister has registered an immeasurable impact on music history. Nearly 65, he remains the living embodiment of the rock and roll lifestyle, and this feature-length documentary tells his story, one of a hard-living rock icon who continues to enjoy the life of a man half his age.

Shot on a combination of High Definition and Super 16mm film, "Lemmy" includes interviews with friends, family, bandmates past and present and such admirers/peers as Metallica, Slash, Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters), Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order), actor Billy Bob Thornton, wrestling superstar Triple H, Alice Cooper, Mick Jones of The Clash, and many more.

Head below for the trailer, the list of theaters screening the film (which include Cinema Village in NYC starting on January 21st), and all Motorhead tour dates...

"Ah Lemmy, I ain't gonna be as sprightly as you are when I hit 63 (didja know he's only 5 years younger than Dylan?)" - Jason Gross

Motorhead

For a couple of weeks during Motörhead's U.S. headlining tour, the band's long-time basher of skins, drummer Mikkey Dee, will be filming season one of Kändisdjungeln, Sweden's version of I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Of Here! where ten celebrities live together in the Malaysian jungle for 16 days. They are being watched by cameras 24/7 and the viewers will decide which celebrity will have to take on crazy and challenging contests. The contests will consist of everything from facing scary bugs to frightening heights. If the celebrities can overcome their phobias and fears, they can bring back food or other needed things to the jungle camp. Finally, the viewers will decide which celebrity will be the winner.

"I can't wait to see that," chuckles Lemmy to Canada's Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles. "He's in the Malaysian jungle, and he doesn't like bugs. And I think they have to be parachuted into the f**king thing - and he doesn't like heights either. So it's definitely going to be worth watching." Mikkey had agreed to do the TV show before the tour was booked. Says Lemmy, "I think he's already had the f**king shots, the anti-tropical disease shots."

But the tour will go on.

Velvet Revolver drummer, Matt Sorum, got the call from Lemmy and will fill in during Mikkey's absence. Formerly of Guns N' Roses and The Cult, Matt is a world-class musician. He and Lemmy have been friends since they toured together when Motörhead performed some dates with GN'R and Metallica years ago. Matt will come out to a few of the early tour dates to "watch Mikkey and get the idea," says Lem. "He'll be alright, he's a professional." [All Access Magazine]

Matt Sorum was the drummer at last night's Motorhead show at Roseland Ballroom in NYC which had almost as many bands on the bill (4) as the number of dollars some people paid for tickets (5). Opening acts at the 9/9/9 show were Reverend Horton Heat, Nashville Pussy, and The Episodes who come from Ohio and have some members that aren't old enough to drive yet. More pictures, and a few more words about the show, below...

Live Nation santas outside Irving Plaza - 7/14/2009 (Jason DeCrow/AP Images)
Live Nation
Live Nation

Live Nation has been dealing with the recession, or at least their recession, by putting tickets on sale like crazy this summer. They've been continuing week after week with their No Service Fee Wednesdays (for lawn tickets at amphitheater shows). This past Tuesday they sent multiple Santa Clauses to give out tickets outside Irving Plaza here in NYC. And there are $5.00 ticket promotions running for both Citi Cardmember holders and Subway sub eaters (code = Subway$5tix). NYC show tickets you can get for $5.00 include Pinback, Bob Mould, Son Volt, Alice in Chains AND STRYPER, Suffocation (playing with Necrophagist on Sunday), Marduk, Obituary, Vader and KMFDM, Brian Wilson in Westbury, and Motorhead, Psychedelic Furs, Happy Mondays, and Islands. Supposedly Pet Shop Boys are $5.00 too, but I can't get that to work.

Nadja & BBA Out now via 20 Buck Spin, the collaborative LP between Nadja & Black Boned Angel. Black Boned Angel is probably best known as the alter-ego of Campbell Kneale of Birchville Cat Motel, who collaborated with Nadja over 2+ years to create the three tracks which formed this LP, as well as the Christ Send Light EP. The graphic artwork is very indicative of the collaborative spirit of the LP as well, as it is also a collaboration between revered artists Stephen Kasner and David D'Andrea. Check out a snippet of one of the tracks on the LP above. Also out now, BBA's new LP Verdun available via Riot Season.

Union Pool has gone metal! Besides the previously mentioned Dysrhythmia show and the Hull / Giant Squid / Grayceon shindig, the venue has also lined up a few other notable shows in the coming months including the mighty Atomic Bitchwax on August 1, f'n Cable on August 15th (3 days before the release of The Failed Convict), and finally Neurot signees It's Casual on August 23rd. Check out "Inner Station" available for download above, which is also on the Relapse Contamination 2009 comp available for $5.99 on iTunes. The band has scheduled a gang of Euro-dates, but none in the US so far... although with Dave Witte gearing up to release Municipal Waste's Massive Aggressive, I'm guessing it might be a while.

Check out a video interview with Municipal Waste, live video of Saint Vitus, as well as a new project featuring Chris Colohan of Cursed, Pentagram, Burzum, 3 Inches Of Blood, Kayo Dot, and much more as This Week In Metal Continues...

AC DCPhone wars 2009 - Verizon vs. AT&T. It is always a battle when these two giants square off with their :60 second spots in tow to prove which company provides the best cellular service and coverage. In recent years, Verizon has enlisted the likes of AC/DC and The Killers. Included in the deal with the Aussie rockers was the right to exclusively offer the band's music digitally. On the other side, AT&T has hammered home their phone offerings and 5-bar messages with a spot including a track from Lupe Fiasco featuring Jill Scott, "Daydreamin", one with Mates Of State, and an Amos Lee commercial, among others. Both have recently gone to the licensing well again to soundtrack new technology and coverage, but with different strategies.

Verizon's new "Hub" decided to go the synergy route, using one of the most popular mainstream tunes of the last year, Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours", in multiple spots showcasing the company's new phone technology.

AT&T meanwhile went with different tunes for each of the new 5-bar spots, matching songs with each commercial's creative direction. In "Backpackers", the sentimental "Falling in Love in a Coffeeshop" by Landon Pigg tells the story of two lovers who met on a brief European backpacking trip. However, because of the quality of the service and technology, they not only can stay in touch with great coverage but end up together again with a touching beachfront reunion. Another boxing themed spot brings to mind Rocky with "Gonna Fly Now." Eighties rockers Journey power this commercial for the symphony. Lastly, an inspirational spot based on Venice, CA, store Tom's Shoes. The store has one premise -- each pair of shoes bought equals one free pair for a child in need. The commercial uses an instrumental version of James Blunt's "Same Mistake." Watch that spot here.

Other Notable Commercial Licensing News:

An instant classic commercial from Heineken -- the beer company celebrates responsible drinking (title is called "Let A Stranger Drive You Home") with the help from Biz Markie's "Just A Friend". Watch the spot below.

Beer maker Miller went with San Fran's The Dodos as the music for their new Miller Chill commercial. Watch it below.

"Daylight," a track by Matt & Kim, provides the vibe in a new commercial for Bacardi Mojitos. See it below.

Scion

2/27/09 - Chicago, IL:
Nachtmystium has sad news today with a once-again recurring issue surfacing from the wake of our past. We've been forced, at the request of the promoters and the folks at Scion / Toyota, to pull out of the Scion Rock Festival, scheduled for Saturday, February 28th. This news came to us just this past Tuesday and was very disheartening to say the least. A troubling, and unjustly-applied notion that we are, or ever have been, in any way, a "Nazi" band or a political band on any level, is completely absurd and we are disgusted that there is someone out there who really believes we are of this ilk. It made it as far as the sponsors of this events desks, and now we are forced to pull out of it after some political threatening on the part of these ridiculously uneducated person/people who have caused this ruckus.
Nachtmystium's statement continued below...

Jenny Lewis - Bolt

I just saw the animated Disney movie Bolt. Like the critics said, it was really great, and not just because it's completely in 3-D.

I won't post any spoilers, but the film is about a dog named Bolt (John Travolta) and his human Penny (Miley Cyrus). In additon to the score, there are basically two full songs in the movie. One is actually sung by John and Miley. That comes at the end. The other, by Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis, is during a (what I think was a) major scene of the movie. It completely surprised me. I wasn't 100% sure it was her, but the credits confirmed it, and then the credits confirmed that the child actress is also assistant director which had me leaving the movie thinking she had that job, though IMDB points out that she is the voice of a character called "assistant director" (which makes more sense I think).

The Jenny and Miley songs are both on the soundtrack which is otherwise all John Powell's score. Not on the soundtrack: Motorhead's "Dog Face Boy" which has a quick cameo in the movie (no spoilers). The Jenny Lewis (new) and Motorhead (old) songs, and another video that ties them together nicely, below...

"Triple H and wife Stephanie were in attendance at last night's Motorhead Concert at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. The concert started off with Triple H's "The Game" theme music blaring over the PA system with the man himself appearing on stage. Triple H introduced the band and stood on the left side of the stage in clear view of the crowd for the entire 90-minute show. Stephanie was also there with Triple H, headbanging throughout the concert and "wearing way too short a skirt for a mother of two," according to the person in attendance. At one point, Stephanie jumped on stage to high five drummer Mikkey Dee. During their third song, Lemmy said, "I'd like to dedicate this next song from Motorizer to Triple H and his lovely wife." The song was "Rock Out," the theme for the Unforgiven pay-per-view. After the show was over, Triple H came on stage to take a final bow with the band." [Professional Wrestling Mania]

Jerry Only, signing autographs. (ilikefishbutfishhateme)
Misfits?

"...The Misfits have always held an incredibly high standard of performance and quality in everything we do. Our fans expect this and deserve it. I will not compromise their expectations for any amount of money, prestige or fame....."
Lets play a guessing game. Is the quote:
  • A) Spoken by Glenn Danzig with respect to the reformation of The Misfits.
  • B) Spoken by Jerry Only with respect to The Misfits dropping off the previously mentioned Volcom Tour.
  • C) Part of a longer quote where Jerry Only also hawked Misfits-brand pomade ("when you absolutely positively must have that perfect devilock!")
If you answered B, sadly, you are correct (although, C isn't far off). The Misfits have dropped off a tour with Motorhead and Valient Thorr, but added a pair of NYC-area shows: Halloween ("hall-low-waaay-ay-ayne") at BB Kings and November 1st at Starland Ballroom in NJ (ticket info currently unavailable). The Misfits 2008 are Jerry Only, Robo (also ex-Black Flag) and Dez Cadena (ex-Black Flag).

Danzig is gearing up for the Blackest Of The Black Tour with Dimmu Borgir and Skeletonwitch, including one date at Roseland on 10/15 (tix still avail). We're not sure if there will be another Danzig+Doyle Misfits set on this tour (probably not).

Both Danzig and "Misfits" touring and playing NYC shows around Halloween is somewhat of a tradition. All dates below...

Heaven & Hell, Metal Masters Tour, PNC, NJ - Aug 9, 2008 (kitty kowalski)
