A$AP Rocky at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)
As mentioned, the Bamboozle festival goes down in Asbury Park this weekend (May 18-20). The festival, which has a continuing history of booking some of the lamest pop punk bands around, like Boys Like Girls, The All American Rejects, and Never Shout Never, has a few interesting/odd inclusions this year. For one, Bon Jovi is one of the headliners. Not only could they probably sell out an Asbury Park show without the rest of the Bamboozle lineup, but do any pop punkers want to see them anyway? Or did mom just need somewhere to be while her kids were seeing The Maine?
The other two headliners don't exactly fit the Bamboozle stereotype either: brostep tycoon Skrillex and grunge torchbearers Foo Fighters. But what's most interesting to us is within this odd mix of mall punk and Grammy Awards Winners, there's actually a handful of acts that we'd love to see, including many of our favorite new rappers, and some emo/pop punk forefathers that knew the difference between throwing a little melody into their punk and straightening their hair. If you do plan on making the trek to NJ this weekend, here's some recommendations of who to check out at the fest:
On Friday (5/18), bounce music party-starter Big Freedia, former Odd Future member Casey Veggies (who actually deserves to exist without that prefix), and Kreayshawn play the Beach Party Stage. Meanwhile, Anamanaguchi will be at the Temple of Boozle Stage. You can also catch Big Freedia in NYC on Thursday (5/17) at Santos before Bamboozle. Tickets are still available.
On Saturday (5/19), the Zumiez Stage will be graced by '90s greats Hot Water Music (who play Gramercy on 5/21-22) and The Promise Ring (who play Irving on 5/20). You can also catch some solid hip hop sets at the Beach Party Stage from A$AP Rocky, Action Bronson, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and Iggy Azalea (who plays SOBs on Thursday (5/17)). Blink-182 were also supposed to play on Saturday but they had to cancel their May dates due to illness and were replaced by My Chemical Romance.
On Sunday (5/20), fellow Jersey punks The Gaslight Anthem (who will preview new material at their sold out MHOW show TONIGHT (5/16)) and The Bouncing Souls (who celebrate their new record at Webster Hall on June 9) will be at the fest. Catch the Gaslight Anthem on Main Stage and the Souls on Zumiez Stage. Star Slinger will also play the Temple of the Boozle stage.
And last, literally last, but not least, well maybe least, and defintely WTF, this year's Paramount Stage will be closed down by none other than comedy legend Andrew Dice Clay who plays after fellow 80s & 90s entertainers Dramarama (who also play the afterparty at Stone Pony) who play after 1996 hit makers Spacehog (who you can also catch at Brooklyn Bowl Thursday).
Tickets for the festival are still available.
Did we leave anyone good out? Check out the set times below...
El-P (right) on stage with Company Flow at Coachella (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
El-P's Cancer for Cure is inching towards release (due on May 22nd via Fat Possum) and though the record leaked yesterday, the Brooklyn MC is trying not to sweat it. At least Jaime Meline has some good news to report today, in that he will hit the road for a string of dates this summer, preceeded by an NYC show at Santos on May 21st, his record release party. Tickets are on sale, and the show will also feature appearances from Despot and, I am guessing, a few surprise guests. The other dates are listed below.
In related news, El-P and Killer Mike have teamed up for R.A.P. Music due on May 15 via Williams Street Records (Adult Swim's label). El-P handles the prduction on the release, as well as makes an appearance on the ninth track "Butane (Champion's Anthem)". Check out one of those tracks, "Big Beast" featuring Bun B, Trouble & T.I. below.
In other news, the new single "Tougher Colder Killer" from Cancer 4 Cure has been released and features Killer Mike and Despot. Check that out below, alongside streaming audio of two other El-P tracks "The Full Retard" and "Drones over Brooklyn", and all tour dates.

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire at Southpaw 2/9 (via)
Action Bronson at Southpaw 2/9 (via)
Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and Action Bronson shared a bill at Southpaw last night (2/9) with support from Soul Kahn and Kyle Rapps, and included special guest Illustrate. They were joined on stage by El-P, Despot, and Kool AD & Heems of Das Racist, who are all featured on eXquire's "Huzzah" remix (where was Danny Brown?!). Action Bronson has a show tonight in Austin, where he will return in March for SXSW.
Last night's show was one of the last at Southpaw, which is closing this month. Their website lists shows happening through February 19, including M.A.K.U. Soundsystem and I Jah Bones TONIGHT (2/10). Tickets for tonight' show are available. There's also a huge show presented by iHeart Dilla taking place on February 15, billed as "One Song: A Forever Fresh Farewell to Southpaw," with Nitty Scott, Illustrate (who was a guest at last night's show), Warren Britt, Jesse Abraham, Top $ Raz, MC Eleven, Tanya Morgan, and many others. The flier for this show with all the performers listed is below.

Kyle Rapps with Talib Kweli
Make sure and get to Southpaw early tomorrow (2/9, tickets), because in addition to great performances from favorites like Action Bronson and Mr. MFN eXquire, you'll be able to catch a set from Kyle Rapps. The New Jersey MC made waves last year with his Re-Edutainment EP (clearly a tip of the cap to the Blast Master) but more recently dropped On Air:
The eight-track mixtape showcases a new sound for Kyle, with the NYC-based emcee choosing to flip samples from French electro duo Air throughout.Kyle Rapps recently starred in a new video for "Bully" from Re-Edutainment, which makes its debut in this post. Check it out below alongside a video for "Universe Traveler" (Air Redux) with Talib Kweli from that On Air mixtape. Download the entire On Air mixtape at Sendspace.
Kyle also threw KRS-One, Homeboy Sandman, and Talib Kweli into the mix, the latter of whom was featured on the EP's first single, "Universe Traveler.
In related news, Kyle Rapps may be revving up the sampler again, as Air just released their latest LP Le Voyage Dans La Lune, a score to the 1902 film of the same name. Check out a clip from the film, with Air's music as the soundtrack, below.
All videos and some streams are below, and check out Kyle Rapps tomorrow at one of the last shows at Southpaw.
Action Bronson at Gramercy in 2011 (more by Brook Bobbins)
Action Bronson, who played the Girls/Real Estate afterparty at Tribeca Grand hotel this past Saturday (how was that?), has a few more shows coming up including another hometown show in NYC at Southpaw on February 9 with Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, who he has shared many local bills with in the past, most recently at Highline Ballroom on 12/27. The bill also includes Kyle Rapps, Soul Kahn, special guest Illustrate, and DJ Meka (2DopeBoyz). Tickets are on sale.
Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire, who dropped a new mixtape for Christmas, meanwhile plays a Chicago show this weekend with Chicago rapper ShowYouSuck who recently released a new mixtape too. eXquire also has a show schedyled at Echoplex in LA on 2/28 with Das Racist.
Action Bronson recently released his first new track of 2012. Find a link to that HERE.

You can stream the whole mixtape and purchase it for $5 at bandcamp.

Earlier this week, Pusha dropped a freestyle over Common's "Sweet" off of his new LP, The Dreamer/The Believer, which came out on Tuesday. The Smoking Section reports that the track is a diss at Drake (who is touring in 2012 with Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky). Stream it below.
Common played Highline Ballroom on Monday (12/19). Nas joined him at the show. You can stream the whole show below, and also check out a video of Nas joining in on "Ghetto Dreams" below.
Speaking of Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and Emilio Rojas, they both just played S.O.B.'s with Kendrick Lamar on Monday (12/19). Talib Kweli saw the show, and tweeted, "The ASAP crew did a 20 min walk thru during the set. Classic Harlem lol." Check out a video from the show below.
Maybe Talib should give Diplo a heads up about Kendrick. Diplo recently tweeted "Kendrick lamar sounds like somebody that played for the supersonics in the 90s. Didn't know he was a rapper. What's his best tune?" (Hey Diplo, check out "The Spiteful Chant").
In other news, Kendrick told XXLMag that he and J. Cole are planning a joint album. "We're still trying to formulate it and sit down in a neutral zone, where either one of us is moving and doing shows, interviews and press all the time," he said. Kendrick told HipHopDx that he's lined up Just Blaze and Pete Rock for his next LP.
Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire will play NYC again when he opens for Action Bronson at Highline Ballroom on December 27. Tickets are still available. eXquire and Bronson both made Heems' list of favorite albums released in 2011.
Dates, videos and stream below...
To quote Pitchfork: "The Weeknd's follow-up to House of Balloons and Thursday is here. Grab the nine-track Echoes of Silence-- featuring a cover of Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana" and production from Clams Casino-- for free over on the-weeknd.com or here,"
House of Balloons, the first mixtape, was #1 on a list of albums that Heems from Das Racist submitted to Pitchfork. Check out Heems' full list of 'Top Albums of 2011' below...
XXLMag and Hennessy are teaming up to present Kendrick Lamar at S.O.B.'s TONIGHT (12/19). The show will also a feature of showcase of artists from XXLMag's The Break, "the spot where new MCs get to show and prove their skills." The Break showcase will include Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire (who also plays Highline Ballroom with Action Bronson soon), Emilio Rojas, Phile Ade, and King Mez. Doors open at 8 PM and Hennessy is serving free drinks, You must be 21+ to enter, but you might have to be on list. Kendrick, the venue and XXL don't make that 100% clear. The show flier is below.
In February Kendrick is heading out on tour with Drake, who will meanwhile be in NYC (and on TV) on New Year's Eve (you can try to see it live via that link). As previously mentioned, ASAP Rocky was also chosen for Drake's tour (which was originally supposed to happen in the fall). All of those dates and a video of ASAP talking about Drake, Kendrick, Odd Future and other stuff, below...

Action Bronson demonstrates the size of his testicles (more by Brook Bobbins)
Action Bronson, who can you can vote for as one of the XXL freshmen of 2012, and who played at the Hip Hop Hanukah show at S.O.B.'s last Thursday, will play another show in his home city before the year ends at Highline Ballroom on December 27. The show is with Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire (who recently played a BV-presented show at Glasslands with G-Side), DyMe-A-DuZiN and The Doppelgangaz. Tickets are still available. He doesn't appear to have any other scheduled shows at the moment.
Action Bronson recently released the new collaborative LP Well Done with Statik Selektah. Get your copy at iTunes. You can also watch the video for album track "Not Enough Words," and stream another one, "Coca Butter," below.
In other news, Action Bronson recently remixed Justin Beiber's holiday jam, "Mistletoe," not long after dropping a track with Asher Roth called "Choices," both of which you can stream below. Not sure if he's joking with these collaborations, but I kinda hope he is. Plus, collabing with the Biebs is way more of a Drake thing to do, which we know Bronson's mentor Ghostface Killah would NEVER approve of, and in Ghostface's book of dont's, an Asher Roth collaboration isn't far behind.

G-Side @ Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn
We've been busy throwing BrooklynVegan live shows this month, and slow to post about them. Back before we started throwing the term "holiday party" into the mix (times three), we put together and presented what ended up being one of my favorite shows of the year: G-Side, Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire, and Cities Aviv at Glasslands on 12/6. As extremely talented G-Side backup singer Joi Tiffany put it, "THE NEW YORK SHOW WAS MF CRAZY!!!!!!" The NY Times was also there:
" The show featured three acts -- G-Side, the headliner, from Huntsville, Ala.; the rapper whose name is printable only when shortened to eXquire, from Brooklyn; and Cities Aviv, from Memphis. Each of these acts tells a story about making hip-hop on the fringes of the mainstream in 2011, but the stories are not the same.Read the review at NYTimes.com. More pictures and some videos from the craziness, below...
At best, they have tradition in common -- not outright nostalgists, or unreasonably emulative, they owe a heavy stylistic debt to the 1990s, both the mainstream and the underground."
G-Side @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
Huntsville, Alabama rap duo G-Side are on a tour that brings them to their BV-presented show at Glasslands TONIGHT (12/6) with Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire (who the Village Voice just interviewed) and Cities Aviv. (Facebook invite HERE.) Tickets are still available and we're also giving away a pair here. Details on how to win are below.
Earlier on in G-Side's tour, they played Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin. More pictures from their set there, where they came out into the photo pit to be closer to the crowd toward the end, are in this post. The five people you see on stage include the duo, their two much-more-than-backup singers and the DJ. The crowd started relatively small for their daytime set, but grew large by the end due to their undeniable talent and charisma. Read more about another recent show they played HERE.
SPIN profiled G-Side for their December 2011 issue, 'The Changing Face of Hip-Hop.' They talked about the town of Huntsville, Alabama, where NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is located, and how G-Side rides "past the rocket to test records out." That rocket is the "363-foot-tall white Saturn V" off the highway, I-565. They talked about the tightly knit scene there. G-Side's manager Codie G. said, "In a city like this, all you get is small wins, If I see somebody here get some success, I feel like that's my success." Then the members of G-Side discussed their difficult childhoods and how they eventually met up in their pre-teenage years and began making music together. According to Yung Clova, their new album Island (which is streaming on bandcamp) "might be the last album," Either this album is gonna make us or it ain't. Struggling, trying to pay your rent -- it gets old," he said. Come support at Glasslands tonight or at one of their other upcoming shows.

The last official date for the Relax tour [was] Wednesday's sold out date at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, but that's just a bugged-out coda for me.That message by Das Racist was actually written the day before Wednesday's show (11/16) at Music Hall of Williamsburg last with Despot and Mr. Muthafuckin' Exquire. The show ended a tour with Despot that began at Bowery Ballroom with the same lineup. Pictures from the homecoming gig are in this post.
I'm writing this in my apartment in Brooklyn while watching a live stream of Zucotti Park/Occupy Wall Street. The window is getting increasingly dominated by cops wearing riot helmets. The whole Occupy movement started less than ten days before the beginning of the tour, and other than a few run-ins (mostly accidentally) in other cities, I've barely acquainted myself with the movement, and now it looks like I won't get the chance. Not so sure what else to say about that right now other than the people running shit, and cops, suck.
It's been a weird six weeks, my knees are completely shot, my voice is shot, I feel we might have disappointed as many fans as we've entertained and I didn't make very much paper at all. We're working on a few tricks for our Europe tour coming up in a few short weeks and then I think it's time for us to start working on some awesome and new shit, collectively and independently, for 2012. Before we kill ourselves (or the world ends, anyway).
Catch Mr. Muthafuckin' Exquire again at Glasslands on 12/6 with G-Side and Cities Aviv. Tickets are still available for the BrooklynVegan presentation. In the meantime, check out a new Exquire video for "Lou Ferigno's Mad" alongside pictures from Music Hall, below...

G-Side @ Purchase Fall Fest
Though it has been announced elsewhere already, we're excited to announced that G-side will be playing at least one BrooklynVegan presented show in December (stay tuned for the possibility of another). The announced show is taking place on December 6 at Glasslands in Brooklyn with Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire and Cities Aviv also on the spectacular bill. Tickets are on sale now. It's one of many dates they just announced. They're all listed below.
Back before Fun Fun Fun Fest (where multiple BVers said they were awesome), G-Side (who also played Pitchfork Fest) played SUNY Purchase Fall Fest on Saturday (10/29) (after playing a last minute show at 285 Kent the night before). The G-Side guys bring one DJ and two extremely talented R&B singers on stage with them for what ends up being much more than just rapping to a backing track. At Purchase there was tons of interaction between those on stage and the audience. They got the entire Fall Fest crowd bouncing, moving it to the left, and whatever other moves they brought with them, chanted "Ain't no party like a Purchase party," and by the end of the set both rappers ended up in the crowd. They ended with an unplanned encore of "How Far," which samples Beach House's "10 Mile Stereo." Pictures from their Fall Fest set are in this post.
More of them, with all tour dates, and a collaboration with UK DJ/Producer Sinden that you can listen to, below...
G-Side at Pitchfork Fest (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Alabama rap duo G-Side and NYC spitter Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire are teaming up for a last minute show at 285 Kent tonight (10/28). The show also includes a 'special guest TBA' which, as Bill hinted at in This Week in Indie, is Star Slinger (who also plays Music Hall of Williamsurg tonight). More info on this show and other G-Side dates listed below. G-Side also has more NYC dates to be announced soon (stay tuned).
G-Side will be sticking around the NYC-area to play SUNY Purchase's Fall Fest on Saturday (10/29). They'll be performing alongside Fang Island, Jessica Lea Mayfield (solo), Kvelertak, Janka Nabay, R E A L M A G I C, and others. The event is technically only open to students and their guests. Complete lineup and video below.
Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire was also recently announced as one of the openers for Das Racist's 11/16 show at MHOW with Despot, after filling in for Danny Brown at Das Racist's Bowery show in September which Despot also played.
All dates, info about tonight's show, Fall Fest lineup and video below...
Youth of Today at Chaos in Tejas (more by BBG)
After many years away from the road, Youth of Today will return to play a free CMJ show at Santos Party House in NYC on Saturday, 10/22. This is the same show that Trash Talk & Kylesa are playing, not to mention AraabMUZIK, Action Bronson, Mr. Motherfuckin eXquire, Main Attrakionz and many others for what will be an eclectic mix of stoner, hardcore, and hip hop. Converse's "True Til Def" will be hosted by the venue's own Andrew WK and is open to the 21+ public, but RSVP is required. Full lineup and flyer for the show is below.
Trash Talk also plays at least two other CMJ shows.

a misleading sign @ Bowery Ballroom last night (photo by ladyyvonne)
Das Racist recently hosted a party at Santos with ASAP Rocky and Spaceghostpurrp. The party was a few days before their record release show for 'Relax' at Bowery Ballroom with Despot last night (9/12).
Danny Brown, who appears on the album and was initially scheduled to play the Bowery show, cancelled at the last minute and was replaced with Mr Muthafuckin eXquire who just released a free album via Mishka (the label) which you can download at bandcamp. Complex also recently filmed a video of Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire at Mishka (the store) in Brooklyn. You can watch that below.
Das Racist also just dropped an uncensored video today for "Michael Jackson" which you can watch, along with some videos from the Santos show below. Listen to "Relax" on Spotify if you have it.
Missed the Bowery show and can't wait for the end-of-tour Brooklyn show to see Das Racist again. Well, you can see them at S.O.B.'s on Thursday (9/15) for the "Hot97 Who's Next Back 2 School Drinkfest Prep", THOUGH NOTE: we have no idea what Das Racist are doing at this event - performing, DJing, just standing there, hosting, who knows.... But the fest includes an album listening session for Relax, beer pong and flip cup tournaments, and performances by Maffew Ragazino Kassa Overall. Tickets are on sale now. The flier is below. Tickets for the 11/16 MHOW show go on sale Friday (9/16) at noon.
In related news, Philadelphia rapper Lushlife is working on a new mixtape which will be out this October. The tape features Heems (of Das Racist), Andrew Cedermark, Dice Raw, Cities Aviv, STS, Jabee, Sun Glitters, and others. You can grab the track, "Back On My Slang" above.
Video, flier, and updated dates below...
It takes some nerve to give yourself the first name of "Muthafuckin". Fortunately, NYC MC Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire is up to the challenge on his new LP Lost in Translation which is available now - streaming below and available for download for free at bandcamp. As previously mentioned, the eighteen-track LP features production from names like El-P, Necro, Esoteric, Charli Brown Beatz, and many others over the course of its sixty+ minutes.
That album stream and a video of a song NOT on Lost in Translation produced by the one and only Mr. Len (of Company Flow) is below.
Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire
"Shortcuts" is a new party being thrown by Heems of Das Racist, Dean Bein of True Panther Sounds, and Despot at Santos Party House. The first edition goes down on September 8 with Spaceghostpurrp, ASAP Rocky, Das Racist (DJ), and Venus X & $hayne (Ghe20 G0th1k). Tickets are on sale now and the flier is below.
LA Weekly recently spoke to 19 year old Miami rapper/producer Spaceghostpurrp, who plays the Shortcuts party. He talked about how he's friends with Kreayshawn, Syd tha Kyd playing his song "Suck a Dick" at a show, and how people need to stop comparing him to Tyler, the Creator and Lil B (even though he fucks with the Based movement). You can listen to the track "Suck a Dick" below.
In related news, Mishka, the store/label who put out material by Das Racist, Stalley, and more recently Main Attrakionz, will release Brooklyn rapper Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire's debut album Lost In Translation on September 11 as a free download. The album will feature production by El-P (who also contributed production to the new Das Racist album), Necro, Esoteric, BoweryBeats, Constrobuz and Charli Brown Beatz. Check out Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire's excellent (and slightly NSFW) video for "Huzzah" with the full new album tracklist below.
