Autre Ne Veut at BV-SXSW 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

As mentioned, Downtown Records are taking their Downtown Music Festivals to different North American cities this year, including NYC from May 10 to 11 across various LES venues, including Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom, Angel Orensanz Center, Pianos, Cake Shop, Tammany Hall, Element, Capitale, Rockwood Music Hall and more.

In addition to the previously announced lineup of Black HIppy (aka Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock), Purity Ring, Earl Sweatshirt, DIIV, Sky Ferreira, Trash Talk, Palma Violets, Teengirl Fantasy, and others; more acts have just been added. Those new acts include Andrewy Wyatt (of Miike Snow), Autre Ne Veut, Guards, Ryan Hemsworth, Port St. Willow, Kilo Kish, Ratking, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Vashtie, Fat Tony, d'Eon and Kingdom (playing with Kelela, who sang a song on the Teengirl Fantasy album last year and sings a song on the new Kingdom EP this year, which you can listen to below).

2-Day passes for the festival have sold out, but single day tickets for May 10 and May 11 are still available. The day-by-day lineups have also been announced, and you can check those out below.

Earlier this year, rapper Cakes Da Killa put out his full length debut, The Eulogy, which you can stream below and download for free at the Mishka bandcamp. He hails from the same NYC queer rap scene as Mykki Blanco and Le1f (who had their breakout moments last year), and while it's not necessarily fair or accurate to blindly group those rappers together, they do have musical similarities and as Cakes says in an interview with Pitchfork, "We're all cunty, we're all gay, and we're all really out" (referring to Le1f and Antonio of House of Ladosha, though he does say he's a big Mykki Blanco fan too).

Like Mykki, Cakes' got don't-give-a-fuck bragging and relentless flow and waits only two lines on The Eulogy to show that off when he spits "Niggas pay my loans just to finger fuck my asshole." Lines like that (which appear all over the album) have earned Cakes descriptions like "pottymouthed," but is it really more pottymouthed than what a ton of heterosexual rappers talk about? Either way, Cakes does what any good rapper should do best. He talks about what he knows, he doesn't censor himself, he's funny, angry, and confident, and so far that all resulted in a hell of a record.

Cakes plays a previously discussed NYC show this Wednesday (3/27) at NYU's E&L Auditorium with a great lineup of Killer Mike and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire. Tickets are $2 for NYU students and $4 for the general public at the NYU box office, and they go on sale today (3/26) at noon.

Killer Mike in Austin in 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)

As mentioned, Killer Mike will be in NYC next week (3/20) playing a Scion party at Public Assembly. (He's currently in Austin for you-know-what.) You can still win tickets to that show (the only way to get in) via contests on Twitter and Instagram -- deadline for entry is Friday (3/15).

This will not, however, be you only shot at seeing the Atlanta rapper in the near future. Killer Mike will play NYU's E&L Auditorium on March 27 with Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and Cakes da Killa. The show is $2 for NYU students and $4 for non-NYU. Tickets are not on sale yet but should be very soon at the NYU ticket central box office. Flyer for the show is below.

Brooklyn rapper Troy Ave pals around with another NYC rappers like Action Bronson and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, and like those guys, Troy is keeping alive the spirit of old school rap (he's also got a song with Prodigy). It's not straight throwback rap (which is a good thing), but it's the kind of rap that makes you wonder why we so often forgive slow flow and lazy rhymes. And he does have some of the golden-era sound, but also often reminds me of Get Rich or Die Tryin'-era 50 Cent and Diplomatic Immunity-era Dipset, both of which turn(ed) ten this year, so even that sound is venturing towards old-school. (DON'T YOU FEEL OLD?)

He's got a few mixtapes under his belt, including 2012's Bricks In My Backpack 3, which you can download for free HERE and watch some videos/stream some tracks below. He also appears on Fool's Gold's Loosies compilation, and his contribution to that, "Viking," can be streamed below as well.

Troy Ave will be playing a Hot 97-presented show in NYC on March 7 at SOB's with fellow Action Bronson associate Meyhem Lauren. Leikeli47 and YFame are on the bill too and tickets are on sale now. Rosenberg and Shani Kulture Music host and DJ Juanyto is on the boards for the night.

SXSW has just announced another round of bands for the 2013 edition of the annual music festival that will happen March 12 - 17. This brings the total current number of acts to around 1300. Someome of the highlights include Vampire Weekend, Frightened Rabbit, The Thermals, Black Lips, Camera Obscura, Merchandise, Bleached, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Eagles of Death Metal, Parenthetical Girls, Indians, Night Beds, IO Echo, KEN Mode, Prince Paul, Pure Bathing Culture, Sepalcure, UK motorik post-punks TOY, Finnish instrumentalists K-X-P, Toronto's Moon King, UK indie rockers Splashh (not Brooklyn Splash with one "h") and loads more. NYC rapper Mr. Muthafuckin 'eXquire recently put out his first release for Universal, the Power and Passion EP, which featured the tracks "Telephuck" and "The Message," both of which he just stopped by Sway to perform. While there, he was also interviewed, and you can check out videos of that interview and both performances below.

eXquire will play a hometown show this Wednesday (12/12) at Knitting Factory for a Ladygunn holiday party with Avan Lava and DJs Illyse Singer and Good Goose. Tickets for that show are on sale now. It's his only announced date at the moment.

Joe Mande is a comedian and writer. He's been seen on Conan, Comedy Central, and VH1 Best Week Ever. He's also a writer for Parks and Recreation, Delocated, and the upcoming Kroll Show. He's also the brains behind the pitch-perfect project Look At This Fucking Hipster. When you're as brilliantly hilarious as Joe Mande, it's only a matter of time before you get sucked into Olde Man Los Angeles' bosom and have to leave NYC, which is precisely what he did recently much to the dismay of many people who love him, myself included.

I have been an avid fan of Mande since he was knee-high to a grasshopper and getting his start in the NYC comedy scene. There was a time where it seemed like you could catch him on a stage somewhere in this city at least 9-10 times a week. It is his simplest flourishes that kill me the most; for example, his twitter feed is the best. Among other tweet-skillz, he has a knack for re-tweeting the absolutely vapid and pointless horse-shit that a celebrity's pea-brain managed to fart out into cyberspace. And where else can you see a picture like this? I asked Joe for a Top Ten of 2012 list. The results, with accompanying YouTube videos, are below.

Cities Aviv, who DJed The Flat last night (11/14) , has released his new LP Black Pleasure via Mishka. Cities Aviv, under the name Muted Drone, is responsible for production on the bulk of the LP, while the remainder comes from names like RPLDGHSTS, LWH, Froskees, and Silky Johnson. Cities Aviv played our BV day party at Public Assembly on the Saturday (10/20) during CMJ and he was joined for a portion of it by Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, who played his own set afterwards. The Orwells, free tattoos & Kitty Pryde @ Public Assembly - 10/20/2012

The second free 2012 BrooklynVegan not-CMJ party went down on Saturday (10/20) at Public Assembly after our Friday party, which happened at the same venue the day earlier. We already talked about how great Miguel was, and posted pics of Caveman, Ratking and Sinkane, but the day was packed with ten other of our great artists, all of who you can see pictures of in this post.

It was the Saturday morning of CMJ, so if you were there when doors opened at noon, you were probably stumbling in hungover from the night before (unless of course, you had copped yourself some of the Mercy hangover prevention drink at our Friday party). But young Chicago-suburb punks The Orwells did a fine job of waking everyone up, including those who were camped at the door to be first in line for the free tattoos we gave out for six hours straight. As the tatto guns started buzzing, the Orwells were blasting the early but nice-sized crowd with their raunchy garage punk led by frontman Mario Cuomo's unforgiving Iggy Pop-style stage presence. Meanwhile, New Zealand psych pop project Opossum were warming up the rest of the party attendees in the back room.

Energy levels stayed high in the front room as Hunters followed, and the back room were treated to dreamier sounds by LA's Tashaki Miyaki. Then came sets by the funky Sinkane, the great, orchestral Choir of Young Believers, a strong set by indie pop band Eternal Summers, and a more than charming one by Kitty Pryde. Kitty, who spent part of her set in the crowd, was the first of four rappers in the back room, with her set followed by Ratking, Cities Aviv, and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire (who went on after watching Miguel from the front row on the other stage) (Miguel returned the favor). And the front room was wrapped up by Hundred Waters, one of this year's buzzed about bands at CMJ, whose set we reviewed from the night earlier, and then Miguel and Caveman.

Attendees at the show were fueled by complimentary drinks courtesy of Sailor Jerry Rum, complimentary beer courtesy of PBR, and snacked on the free Raw Revolution organic live food bars that were scattered around the venue. Hopefully nobody had a hangover thanks to cans of the Mercy that were given out aplenty.

Killer Mike (via BV Instagram)

I spent most of my Thursday night (10/18) at the Studio at Webster Hall show for the MTV-presented show with Killer Mike, Le1f, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Big K.R.I.T., and Flatbush Zombies. The show got off to a late start but were sets were quick and so was turnover, so by the time Flatbush Zombies began their closing set, they were actually a bit ahead of schedule. Despite this great lineup in a relatively small venue, the place never filled up, but the small crowd was a pretty dedicated one, with most people sticking around for every act.

Killer Mike kicked things off, coming out with little introduction to "Big Beast," the biting opening track on his excellent 2012 LP, R.A.P. Music. Killer Mike's made a few notable guest appearances early on his career (Outkast's "The Whole World" and Bone Crusher's "Never Scared," the latter of which he played last night) and had his own hit around then with "A.D.I.D.A.S," but though Mike has continued to release albums and mixtapes since then, he's gone pretty under the radar until we were hit with the impact of R.A.P. Music. He focused much of his set on it, following "Big Beast" with "Untitled," "Go," and an a cappella version of "Reagan," which Killer Mike prefaced with a story about how he's not a political rapper, he's a social rapper, and the message of that song is for us to vote for politicians who will look out for our communities and the ones that surround us. Killer Mike's set was one of the best (if not the best) sets of the night, and he definitely set the bar too high as an opener, but he had to play early so he could head over to Irving Plaza for his show with GZA.

Up next was Le1f, whose set was remarkably different from the rest of the bill. While most of the other acts delivered rowdy beats and crowd-working rhymes, Le1f stayed introverted with a passive flow over slower, bass swelling tracks. He was joined by two dancers on stage, both (like Le1f) decked out in camouflage. He did have a few bangers, which, just based on the mood of the show, came off best, and in that environment it would have paid off to focus more on those. But a solid set nonetheless.

Flatbush Zombies at Santos - 10/17/12 (via Frankie Castillo)

Flatbush Zombies packed Santos last night for the Noisey showcase with Children of the Night, The Underachievers, Bodega Bamz, and more. The show was a mad house and the line to get in was wrapped around the block. If you were there, how was it?

Since that show happened, the hip hop crew have been revealed as the special guest at tonight's MTV showcase at The Studio at Webster Hall (10/18) with Big K.R.IT., Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Le1f, and Killer Mike. Doors are 5:30 for what is sure to be a great show and tickets are still available. You can also try to get in with your CMJ badge. Set times are below.

For Killer Mike, this is an early show that he tacked on before he heads to Irving Plaza where his tour with GZA (performing Liquid Swords), Sweet Valley (Nathan of Wavves' beat project), and Bear Hands hits tonight. Since we last posted about it, that show's lineup has been expanded to include Haleek Maul (who also played the Santos show with Flatbush Zombies last night) and The Color Film. Tickets for that show are still available, or you can try to get in with your CMJ badge, or try to win a pair from us. Contest details are below. The show starts at 7 PM.

Main Attrakionz at BV-SXSW 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Earlier this month, we mentioned that iPhone/Android app Mobli was throwing a CMJ party with Heems, Sasha Go Hard, Kitty Pryde, Weekend Money, SAFE, The Underachievers, and Party Supplies. That party was supposed to happen today at Delinquency but that venue has since been shut down so the whole lineup (minus The Underachievers and Party Supplies) is merging with the Young One Records showcase, which happens tonight (10/17) at 285 Kent. That showcase, in addition to including the names mentioned above, will have Main Attrakionz, Kool AD, Deniro Farrar, Supreme Cuts, Cities Aviv, Bryant Dope, Ryan Hemsworth, and CBG. SAFE and Ryan Hemsworth are DJing between sets, the rest of the acts are playing live. The show flier and set times are below.

That 285 Kent show is a pretty stacked bill for hip hop, and if you're into stacked hip hop shows like that one, you'll also probably want to check out the Mass Appeal party at Gramercy on Friday (10/19) with Asher Roth, Prodigy (of Mobb Deep), The Alchemist, Large Professor, Mr. Muthafuckin' exquire, Roc Marciano, Boldy James, Ninja Sonik, Bodega Bamz, Alexander Spit, Angel Haze and Timeless Youth. As mentioned, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire also plays SOB's on Thursday (10/18) and an MTV Studio at Webster Hall the same day. That studio show is with Big K.R.I.T. and LE1F, and when we first mentioned it, a "special guest" was billed who has since been revealed as Killer Mike. Tickets for that one are still available.

That MTV show is an early show (5:30 doors) and after that there's a late show with Chuck Inglish (of The Cool Kids), Ninjasonik, ASAP TyY, Blvckalfred, Vault Boys, MopTop, Chase N Cashe, GDP, Vyle, and Curtains. Tickets for that one are still available.

Cities Aviv, in addition to the Young One show, has other CMJ shows, including the Flowerbooking CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory on Friday (10/19) with Unicorn Kid, Ki:Theory, Devin, Ghost Wave, and Talk Normal (tickets) and the Bond Music Group/PopGun show at Cameo Gallery on Friday (10/19) (late show) with Steven A. Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire is set to release the Power & Passion EP on November 6 via his new home at Universal Republic Records. That EP includes lead single, "Telephuck," which features El-P (who eXquire recently toured with) on the beat and Gucci Mane with a guest verse. You can stream that track below. The EP also features production by SpaceGhostPurrp, Harry Fraud, and others.

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire will be playing some local shows during CMJ including the previously discussed Leaders of the New Cool CMJ party at SOB's on October 18 with Casey Veggies and others (tickets). That same day (10/18), he'll play an MTV-presented show at The Studio at Webster Hall with Big K.R.I.T., LE1F, and special guests. And on October 20, he'll play the Tumblr CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory with Doldrums, Troy Ave, Prince Rama, and The So So Glos. Joey Bada$$

Young Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ put out two of the strongest rap releases of the year so far with 1999 and Rejex, both of which are highly indebted to the golden age era sound of Illmatic, Ready to Die, Reasonable Doubt, and other classics of that kind. Joey and his crew, Pro Era, have been playing locally a lot lately (like when they joined Ab-Soul at Terminal 5 when Ab-Soul was opening for Kendrick Lamar), and they'll continue to do so with a number of shows this month.

This Wednesday (10/10), Joey will join Pusha T, Biz Markie, Action Bronson (who you have plenty of other chances to see), Sicky Brett (of Past Due), plus host Sophia Urista and guest DJs and performers at the Downtown Brooklyn College Festival, which takes place in the BAM parking lot (30 Lafayette Ave). Admission is $10 for students and participating schools include NYU, LIU, Berkeley College, and Saint Francis College. Tickets for that college festival are on sale now. Joey is also scheduled to play at this year's CMJ and at SUNY Purchase Fall Fest a week later (10/27).

Regarding CMJ, as mentioned, Joey and Pro Era will play the Yours Tru.ly day party at Glasslands on October 19 with Ratking, Jim-E Stack, Isaac Delusion, Evy Jane, Night Panther, and MØ. That show is free with RSVP. Then, later that night (10/19), Joey will head to Brooklyn warehouse Villain for the official Pitchfork showcase with Death Grips, LE1F, DIIV, Holy Other, METZ, Merchandise, Daughn Gibson, Hundred Waters, and Angel Haze. That show is free to the public but 200 priority tickets will be given away at the Topman store (478 Broadway in SoHo) "on Wednesday and Thursday between 10 AM and 9 PM."

Keeping his Friday of CMJ busy, in addition to those two shows, Joey will also perform at the Self Taught Showcase at The Studio at Webster Hall (set time TBD).

Before those three parties, Joey and Pro Era will play the Cinematic Music Group/Ekco Ultd/XXL showcase at SOB's on October 18 with Big K.R.I.T., Smoke DZA, Fat Trel, Cashius Green, Chance the Rapper, and Mookie Jone, with hosts Peter Rosenberg and Shiest Bubz. Tickets don't seem to be on sale at the moment but Ecko is running a ticket contest. The show flier is below. Both Joey Bada$$ and Big K.R.I.T. are featured on Smoke DZA's new free mixtape, K.O.N.Y..

That SOB's show runs from 6-10 PM before the Leaders of the New Cool CMJ party takes over the Manhattan venue with Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Casey Veggies, Travi$ Scott, Nemo Achida, Armstrong, Reese Two-9, Chance the Rapper, DJ Genesis and host Maurice Garland (tickets).

With the opening of the Barclays Center (follow @BrooklynVegan on Twitter for some scenes from the chaos), both New York and Time Out ponder the changing landscape of Brooklyn in this week's issues.

Speaking of the new venue, Lady Gaga's MSG (2/22) & Barclays Center (3/6) shows sold out today, so she added one more at each venue. The new dates are 2/23 @ MSG and 3/7 @ Barclays. Both go on sale Friday, October 5th at 10am.

Other NYC shows that went on sale today include JEFF the Brotherhood, Field Report, Diamond Rings, Anais Mitchell, Kelly Hogan, Callers and Petty Fest.

And regarding that Staten Island politician talking shit about her, Lady Gaga thanked him.

As mentioned, Soundgarden is releasing a new album, their first in 15 years, on 11/13. Now you can hear the first song which is streaming at the bottom of this post.

In other bands who were good in the '90s Barclays Center news and, Smashing Pumpkins warmed up for their arena tour with an intimate, two-and-a-half-hour show at Stubb's in Austin last night. The tour hits the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Halloween.

Diplo jumping off MHOW's balcony - 8/5/12 (via Diplo)

The Mad Decent Block Party returned to NYC this past Sunday (8/5), happening for the first time in the newly-christened Williamsburg Park instead of South Street Seaport, where it's been in previous years. Unfortunately, due to the storm that hit NYC on Sunday which picked up during Erol Alkan's set, the party was shut down early before headliners Major Lazer (the project of Mad Decent label boss Diplo). Before the party did get shut down, we got sets by Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Bonde Do Role, Lunice, Riff Raff, Baauer, and more. You can check out some videos of the performances and the rain below.

After MDBP's cancellation, Diplo tweeted that Major Lazer would do an extra long set at the afterparty at Music Hall of Williamsburg, which also had sets by Erol Alkan, Lunice, and Jim-E-Stack. The party got pretty crazy, as you can see in the picture above of Diplo jumping off MHOW's balcony, but it didn't appease everyone. One angry MDBP attendee took to his blog to say, "Diplo (Major Lazer) invited the attendees from the free all ages event to a $10/21+ after show......Thanks a ton MAD DECENT." Granted, MHOW is also significantly smaller than Williamsburg Park and the party was announced way before the weather shut down the block party so it would've been hard to get in regardless, but he has a point that it doesn't totally "make up" for the cancellation. Major Lazer will be back in NYC for a much larger (paid) show on October 27 at Terminal 5 too (tickets).

Adult Swim's The Eric Andre Show is taking its show on the road this month with a few dates, the first of which was this past Monday (7/9) in San Francisco. Each date includes a musical guest, "real and fake celebrity appearances, and all of the demented antics you have come to expect." The next appearance is in Chicago this Sunday (7/15) with Flying Lotus and that one doubles as an official Pitchfork after party. Later in the month it comes to NYC for two shows: July 19 at Santos Party House with Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and July 21 at Public Assembly with Wiki. Tickets are on sale now for the Santos show and the Public Assembly show.

Meanwhile, as mentioned several times, you can catch Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire in NYC TONIGHT (7/13) when his tour with Killer Mike (who plays an Eric Andre show in Atlanta), El-P, and Despot hits Irving Plaza. Tickets for tonight's show are still available.

El-P @ Mohawk - 6/23/2012

El-P is currently on tour with Killer Mike, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, and Despot supporting both El-P's new album, Cancer 4 Cure, and Killer Mike's (which El-P produced), R.A.P. Music. They're over in California right now, and while there, El-P stopped by Conan to perform with Zola Jesus last night (6/27). They played "Works Every Time" off El-P's new album. You can watch a video of that performance below.

As mentioned, the tour hits NYC on July 13 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show are still available and we're also giving away a pair. Details on how to enter are below.

Squarepusher

Back in May, drill & bass master Squarepusher announced a North American tour which included a TBA NYC show set to happen on October 30. Well it turns out the NYC show will actually be on November 1 and it happens at Terminal 5 with a great list of openers; Bonobo (DJ), Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/29) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (6/27) at noon. All Squarepusher dates are listed below.

Squarepusher released his new album, Ufabulum, in May and it's a pretty solid one. It opens with "4001," which is just about the only song that sounds like classic Squarepusher, and is then followed by, "Unreal Square," which brings in a bit of brostep bass wobble. The rest of the album sees Squarepusher diving into nutty jazz fusion and unstoppable breakbeats. You can stream three of its tracks below.

Speaking of Mount Kimbie, they've signed to Warp, the label which Squarepusher also calls home, and currently at work on their second album which will be released on the label. The Terminal 5 show appears to be their only announced North American date at the moment.

Holy Fuck and Bonobo will be in NY even sooner for Camp Bisco, which goes down from July 12-14 at Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY. They'll be joining a lineup which includes Tycho, Simian Mobile Disco, Skrillex, Amon Tobin ISAM, Big Boi, Crystal Castles, Yacht, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Shigeto, FaltyDL, Thundercat, and more. Tickets for the festival are still available. The full lineup is listed below.

In related news, You can also catch Holy Fuck frontman Brian Borcherdt in NYC right after Bisco with his new project, Dusted, who play Glasslands on July 15. Tickets for that show are still available.

Ultramagnetic MCs at ATP NJ 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

As mentioned in What's going on? last night, Prodigy's upcoming "Queens Day" show at Irving Plaza, which was supposed to happen next week (6/19) has been cancelled. Though he did play a private Rock the Bells kickoff show at Santos Party House last night (6/13) with (according to the flyer) Ghostface Killah, DMX, Jadakiss, and Hit Squad

Q-Tip's "Offline" party (a DJ gig), also scheduled at Irving Plaza, is still set to happen this Friday (6/15) at the Manhattan venue.

Ghostface Killah's other upcoming shows include the free Prospect Park show on 6/23, a Wu-Block party at Highline Ballroom (8/8) (tickets on sale 6/15), and Rock the Bells with Wu-Block. The Highline show is only with Ghostface and Sheek Louch, but for Rock the Bells, the whole crew will be there (Ghostface, Raekwon, Sheek Louch, Jadakiss, and Styles P).

Meanwhile, Raekwon will be in NYC for the previously discussed Best Buy Theater show (7/26) with Tyler, the Creator, and Earl Sweatshirt. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/15) at noon.

Ghostface and Raekwon play a free show together, and much sooner, in Toronto as part of NXNE on Sunday (6/17). Action Bronson, who plays a free show in Red Hook Park (6/19), will be at the Toronto fest too. The entire music portion of NXNE kicked off yesterday (6/13) and runs through the weekend.

Killer Mike will be at NXNE too, and his tour with El-P, Despot, and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire kicks off on Tuesday (6/19) in Atlanta. It hits NYC on July 13 at Irving Plaza. Ticketsplayed SOB's with Spaceghostpurrp in celebration of Purrp's new album, Mysterious Phonk. Purrp's also got a couple Shortcuts parties under his belt. Speaking of, one of those (sans Purrp) goes down at Santos TONIGHT (6/14) with Fat Tony and Fat Trel (tickets).

While NXNE is going on in Toronto, Brooklyn will be getting its own multi-venue music festival with Northside Festival, which also happens this weekend.

As mentioned, Kool Keith plays a Northside show at Brooklyn Bowl TONIGHT (6/14) with Lushlife. Lushlife recently dropped a remix of "She's a Buddhist, I'm a Cubist" with Angel Deradoorian, Cities Aviv, G-Side, Big Baby Gandhi, Deniro Farrar, and KDz Kenny Dennis. You can stream that below Tickets are still available for the Brooklyn Bowl show and we're also giving away a pair. Contest details are below.

As usual, Questlove will DJ the Brooklyn venue after that show (tickets).

Kool Keith also plays as part of Ultramagnetic MCs at a Northside show at MHOW on Sunday (6/17) with Phony PPL. Tickets for that show are still available. Phony PPL also play SOB's on July 24 with Blackbear. Tickets for that show are on sale.

GZA & Grupo Fantasma @ Bonnaroo 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

And speaking of hip hop Northside shows at MHOW, GZA (backed by Grupo Fantasmo like he was a Bonnaroo) plays two (early and late) shows at the venue TONIGHT (6/14). Both are sold out, but you can try and get in with your Northside badge.

Aside from Kid Sister at Sugarland on Saturday (6/16), not much more hip hop is happening at Northside, but there are other good hip hop shows tonight and this weekend.

Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) plays the previously discussed show at the Apollo Theater TONIGHT (6/14) as part of Blue Note Jazz Festival. Tickets for that show are still available FOR THE SHOW THAT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 28th.

Blue Note Jazz Fest also gives us a free Central Park Summerstage show on Sunday (6/17) with Groove Theory, Soulive, Riq and Rah with Strings (Black Thought + Rahzel), and DJ Questlove.

EPMD and DJ Scratch play a free show at Herbert Von King Park TONIGHT (6/14). They also team up for a NYC show at BB King's on July 18 with Marley Mari and Big Daddy Kane. (tickets)

Hip hop producer RJD2 DJs a party for the ongoing 'One Step Beyond' series at the American Museum of Natural History on Friday (6/15) with Cosmo Baker, Import/Export, and visuals by Glowing Pictures with special guest Shantell Martin. Tickets for that are available.

You can also catch Tech N9ne and Machine Gun Kelly on the Hostile Takeover Tour which takes over the NYC area on Saturday (6/16) at Starland Ballroom in NJ (tickets) and Sunday (6/17) at HIghline Ballroom (tickets). Be careful during Machine Gun Kelly's set though; TMZ reports that he was just sued $15,000 for slicing open a bouncer's finger. Ouch.

Apple Stores are hosting hip hop in-stores all month.

Once all the Northside craziness ends, you can catch Ab-Soul at his previously discussed NYC show on Thursday, June 21 at SOB's. Tickets for that show are still available.

Last night, before a tightly-packed Santos Party House in downtown Manhattan, El-P showcased his new work in its entirety, front to back...
Opening with the rave-like "Request Denied" and blazing the stage with bangers "The Full Retard" and "Drones Over Bklyn," El-P worked the crowd into a frenzy with relative ease. He was joined by many guests including show opener/Def Jux refugee Despot and new best bud Killer Mike on "Tougher Colder Killer," Das Racist's Himanshu on "True Story," Nick Diamonds of Islands on "Stay Down," and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire on "Oh Hail No." The one bummer of the night was Danny Brown was apparently not able to make it out for his verse. However, Action Bronson did appear on stage at one point. He didn't get on the mic, but he did smoke two gigantic joints on the side of the stage which was a spectacle in and of itself. -[Death & Taxes]

Next up, a US tour for El-P, Killer Mike, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire and Despot. Initially, no NYC date was scheduled for that tour, but they've since added one happening on July 13 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show go on presale Thursday (5/24) at 10AM and regular sale starts Friday (5/25) at 10 AM.

Meanwhile, you can catch Killer Mike again this Thursday (5/24) at Brooklyn Bowl.

As you can see above, El-P's special guests for his upcoming show at Santos on May 21 will include none other than Killer Mike! The Atlanta MC, who also plays a free show at Brooklyn Bowl with DIIV three days later, will join Jaime Meline for his Cancer for Cure release party along with Despot and more special guests. That makes Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire the only artist that isnt officially on the Santos show from the upcoming tour with El-P and Killer Mike. No word on if he'll show up as well, but considering his proximity... it's definitely possible. Tickets are still available. UPDATE: special guests confirmed:

In other El-P news, he recently released another new trailer Cancer for Cure. But no need to wait because you can also now stream the LP in full. El-P recently performed "Stay Down" with Nick Diamonds on David Letterman (on 5/15), check that out along with the trailer below.
