It's that time of year again. You can't seem to walk a block without seeing Christmas lights or hearing holiday favorites (all ten of them) from every passing storefront. If you're looking for something beyond "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for the hundredth time, there's no shortage of holiday-themed shows over the next few weeks. (Though some of them, however, may include that old chestnut.) Here's a few of them:

Sloan Wainwright is bringing the full band version of her intimate project to City Winery on Sunday (12/7) for a special holiday-centric show with the similarly minded Peter Stampfel & The Ether Frolic Mob (who plays new Greenpoint venue Aviv the night before) as well as performances from Cosy Sheridan, Muppeteer Peter Linz, Sam McTavey and more. Tickets for the show are on sale now. You can also catch Sloan at her niece and nephew Rufus and Martha Wainwright's holiday shows at Town Hall later in the month, one of which features, among many many others, Cyndi Lauper who's doing her own guest-filled holiday show.

Old 97's lead singer and prolific solo artist Rhett Miller is hosting his second annual holiday shindig at City Winery on December 16. The "Holiday Extravaganza" features music from Miller and comedy from Jen Kirkman, Dave Hill, Wyatt Cenac and more. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

Like last year, B.B. King Blues Club is hosting a slew of shows dedicated to the holiday celebrations. There's the club's annual Christmas party hosted by Ronnie Spector on December 20 (tickets), and four shows from another Phil Spector protege, Darlene Love, on December 19, 26, 27 and January 2. Tickets for all four shows are still available.

For those celebrating the other major religious holiday during this season, a cappella group The Maccabeats are having their annual Hanukkah show at B.B. King's on December 25 with support from Y-Studs. Tickets are on sale now.

Another option is "Christmas for the Jews" at City Winery. The stand-up show features sets from Avi Liberman, Jon Fisch, Cory Kahaney and more. Sold out.

Meanwhile, Matisyahu plays his annual "Festival of Light" show on December 20 at Best Buy Theater. Tickets for that show are still available.

What else? You can catch Dave Hill, his band Valley Lodge, Todd Barry, Janeane Garofalo, Bridget Everett, Chris DiStefano, Larry Murphy and more at "Meet Me Under The Mistletoe and Tell Me All Your Secrets" on December 10 at The Bell House. Tickets for the show are still available.

As discussed, there's a few other holiday shows at The Bell House including Norah Jones' country band Puss 'N' Boots, The Sweetback Sisters, Eliot & Ilana Glazer, Wasabassco's 70's Christmas Carol and what's sure to be a very magical show presented by Harry & the Potters.

Bridget Everett will also perform at drag king legend Murray Hill's holiday show with Carmine Covelli (who's in Bridget's band The Tender Moments and The Julie Ruin), and burlesque performers Perle Noire, Trixie Little and Mr. Gorgeous on December 13 at Le Poisson Rouge. Tickets for that show are still available.

Another Christmas comedy show is Dan St. Germain's Christmas Spectacular at Union Hall on December 16 with sets from Brooks Wheelan, Jared Logan, Kevin Barnett, Jacqueline Novak and Team Submarine. Tickets for that show are still available.

Also at Union Hall, on December 14 (tix) is a Christmas edition of their monthly "Muppet Vault" series where they'll show classic holiday TV special Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas (done here as a singalong) and other appropriate clips from Muppetland.

For a night of music and comedy, there's Aimee Mann & Ted Leo's Christmas tour stop at Town Hall on December 13 with Fred Armisen, The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs and geek-rocker Jonathan Coulton. Tickets for that show are still available.

Other previously mentioned holiday shows include Nick Lowe, John Waters, and the stacked WFMU Holiday Cheer Benefit with Conor Oberst, Natalie Merchant, The Felice Brothers, Laura Marling, The Lone Bellow and Jonathan Wilson.

For a little more traditional Holiday fun there's How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at The Theater at MSG from December 5 through December 28. (tix).

Speaking of Emmet Otter, check out some great bloopers/outtakes from that Christmas special below...

New York Comic Con, a geyser of nerddom people either love with unbridled passion or hate with unbridled passion, will descend its acne ridden buttocks upon the Jacob Javits Center on Manhattan's West Side from October 9 - 12. Discerning nerds and dorks of all stripes will thrill to panel discussions, vendors, signings, cosplay, and more without fear of atomic wedgies or being stuffed in lockers or God help us, a dreaded swirley. And unlike the San Diego Comic Con, which happens next month, the NYC one is actually managable to some extent.

The 2014 Comic Con will be a little different this year as it will be supplemented with a ton of programming leading up to and running concurrent with the event. This splinter programming is called New York Super Week which will happen October 3 - 12.

New York Super Week - a first of its kind pop culture festival. With different pop culture themed experiences happening in every corner of the City - including concerts, comedy shows, gaming events, lectures, podcasts, storytelling, food tastings and more - New York Super Week brings the entire universe of popular culture to every corner of all five boroughs of New York City.
New York Super Week is the brainchild of pop culture event specialist ReedPOP:
ReedPOP has partnered with a number of venues, bars, restaurants and retailers throughout the city, including, but not limited to: Hammerstein Ballroom, 92nd Street Y, Rock Bar, The Bell House, Galapagos Art Space and Barcade. New York Super Week will be the ultimate celebration for fans of pop culture. Kicking-off with StarTalk Live! hosted by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson at the Hammerstein Ballroom, New York Super Week events will demonstrate the breadth of international, national and local pop culture, ranging from live recordings of Ask Me Another and Slate's Hang Up & Listen podcast, to The Big Quiz Thing, Running Late with Scott Rogowsky featuring the co-creators of Dr. Katz, Story Collider, and eSports competitions.
I am particularly intrigued by SLIMED! Presents a Nickelodeon Nostalgia Nite and Running Late with Scott Rogowsky featuring the co-creators of Dr. Katz. Right now ticket info and full program scheduling is TBA, but I do know you can get the New York Super Week Card to priority seating to all New York Super Week events taking place at such locales as 92Y Kaufmann Concert Hall, Barnes & Noble, and Galapagos Art Space as well as drink specials at venues and bars such as Rock Bar, Barcade, The Bell House, Union Hall, Videology, Duke's, Big Daddy's and The Way Station. Kaboom!

Full list of events thus far announced are below. ...

Record Store Day 2014 is Saturday (4/19) and there are upwards of 800 RSD exclusive titles released worldwide this year. Which is clearly too many. But if you're reading this now you're probably at least thinking of going out and joining the throngs of music fans, record collectors, and eBay types trying to get all the stuff on their list. Or maybe you're going out to check out some in-store performances, or just hoping to have a couple free beers.

We've already written about a whole lot things being released this year. But we've got more. BV editors Andrew Sacher and Bill Pearis each picked 11 RSD exclusives they think are worth the dough. (Ten just wasn't enough.) What titles are you looking for this year?

Their respective lists, along with some streams, below...

As you may know, Record Store Day's Black Friday (11/29) edition will be back this year aiming to get a piece of the post Thanksgiving Day pie (pumpkin, most likely). The RSD folks have just released the full slate of Black Friday exclusives and they include:

Steve Albini's 2013 mix of Nirvana's In Utero on clear 45 RPM vinyl.

Josh Tillman - The History of Caves: The man better known as Father John Misty's instrumental score to his wife Emma's short film.

Stiff Records' Ten Big Stiffs 7" box set (classic singles w/ original sleeves by Tracey Ullman, Tenpole Tudor, Wreckless Eric and more).

Cheap Trick - The Classic Albums 1977-79, which packages their first five LPs in one vinyl box.

John Denver & The Muppets - Christmas Together reissued as a vinyl picture disc.

Low and Shearwater each contribute an unexpected cover ("Stay" by Rihanna and "Novacane" by Frank Ocean, respectively) on 12" vinyl.

One place you'll hopefully be able to find most of these is at Rough Trade New York which is set to open the Monday before Thanksgiving (11/25). You can see the full list of RSD Black Friday 2013 releases below and more details are at RSD's site.

Die Antwoord @ ACL 2012 (by Glen Brown)
ACLACL

We've completed our coverage of this past weekend's Austin City Limits festival with a set of pictures from Sunday, Die Antwoord (like the above) included.

Die Antwoord have a new and controversial video for "Fatty Boom Boom" which you can watch below.

Still no word on the identity of the body found near Austin Music Hall.

Maybe you heard it's CMJ week here in NYC and we're already tired and we haven't even seen any shows yet. But we are pumped to be throwing two day parties on at Public Assembly. Saturday's line-up hasn't been announced yet, but you can check out Friday's (10/19, including METZ, Savages and The Intelligence) here.

We also are sad to report that, despite what the flyer says, Sharon Van Etten is NOT playing that Thursday day party at Ace Hotel.

Fiona Apple @ Winstar World Casino last night (via rideincircles)
Fiona

The brouhaha surrounding Fiona Apple's drug arrest last week just keeps going. (They're calling it AppleGate!) Over the weekend, Apple talked about her jail experience, or something like that, in Houston. It involves two "lock boxes."

Then, Hudspeth County Sheriff's department spokesman Rusty Fleming offered an amazing rebuttal that included this bit:

Two weeks ago nobody in the country cared about what you had to say, -- now that you've been arrested it appears your entire career has been jump-started. Don't worry Sweetie, I won't bill you.
Texas state law classifies hashish possession as a third-degree felony, so according to AlterNet, Fiona could be headed back to jail for up to ten years.

Fiona Apple ended up not playing Austin the night of her arrest even though she was let out that same day, but another woman musician making lots of news lately, Amanda Palmer did.

Meanwhile in Bushwick, Bill and Hillary Clinton were hanging out with indie musician Lia Ices, Joel Cohen, Gloria Steinem and other hip cats at Roberta's on Friday.

The great Amenra is preparing to launch Mass V, the band's new LP due via Neurot Recordings on November 26th. Check out the tracklisting, album art and a teaser video below.

Flying Lotus's new album 'Until The Quiet Comes' is streaming at NPR.

The Barclays Center opens this week. Will you be going inside or protesting out?

Speaking of protests, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is on strike. UPDATE: Were on strike.

More stuff below...

Paul Williams

It's quite the résumé: writer of hit songs for the Carpenters, Barbra Streisand and the Muppets; delightfully villainous costar of Brian De Palma's cult classic Phantom of the Paradise; one of Johnny Carson's favorite guests. Paul Williams has lived a life most would envy, but according to Stephen Kessler's revealing documentary, he's only just begun. This isn't your standard talking-heads hagiography. Kessler began filming as a fan first, attending a Williams concert in Canada after he discovered his childhood idol, long out of the Hollywood limelight, was still alive and well. He slowly works his way into the legendary singer-songwriter's confidence, accompanying him to a variety of events--celebrity golf tournament, autograph signings, performances around the globe--and probes his subject about his colorful past. [Time Out NY]
One of the coolest cats of the '70s, Paul Williams' songwriting credits include The Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays," The Monkees' "Someday Man," the theme to The Love Boat, and all the songs for The Muppet Movie, Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas, Phantom of the Paradise and Bugsy Malone. He also starred in Phantom of the Paradise, and had roles in Smokey & the Bandit and '60s cult film The Loved One, among other works. More recently he collaborated with The Scissor Sisters on their 2006 album Tah-Dah. Paul Williams Still Alive opens in NYC on Friday, June 8 at the Angelika in NYC. Paul Williams will be at the 8PM screenings on Friday (6/8) and Saturday (6/9) for a post-screening Q&A. He's gotta have a lot of good stories.

Watch the trailer for Paul Williams Still Alive below, along with some tv clips of Paul in his '70s prime.

Gucci Mane at the last (?) Pool Party (more by Chris Doss)
Gucci Mane

Rapper Gucci Mane has been ordered to undergo psychiatric tests, following an Atlanta court appearance on a charge he violated terms of his probation. Radric Davis, the rapper's real name, appeared before Fulton County Superior Court Judge John Goger on Monday. Davis' attorney, Michael Holmes, filed a special plea of mental incompetency on behalf of Davis, who has battled drug problems in the past. The rapper was sent to Anchor Hospital, a 111-bed psychiatric and chemical dependency treatment facility in Atlanta. Records show Davis has been in the Fulton County Jail at least five times since 2005 on drug, aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges. His court appearance stemmed from a November altercation. [AP]
It also hasn't been the greatest of days for Gucci Mane's protege Wacka Flocka Flame, who surrendered to the police in connection with drugs and weapons charges. Wacka Flocka Flame's "No Hands" currently sits at #4 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip Hop Chart.
