54/10 Music Marathon

The 2nd Annual 54/10 Music Marathon kicks off tonight (6/14) at Ars Nova (511 West 54th St, NY, NY) and runs through June 25. Three different bands play each night and food will be available via the Joyride Ice Cream Truck, Eddie's Pizza Turck, Go Burger, Kimchi Taco Truck, and Jiannetto's Pizza. According to an interview with NY Press:

"A new addition this year is, we really wanted to create an atmosphere where people were really here for the whole night, and we wanted to make giving a chance to a band as easy and rewarding as possible, so we tried to think about what people might want to do in the breaks in-between bands, because that's definitely one place where venues just throw on a house mix. So we now have secured ourselves food trucks for every night of the marathon, so it's a different food truck every night. Last year we didn't have a very clear way to publicize the festival as a whole, so this year we've created a listening station where we have some iPods out with albums from each of the bands, so if you're here for whichever night, you're able to listen to albums by the other bands while you're waiting in-between sets or before the show."
You can see which truck will be there each night at their site.

ARMS play the marathon on June 23 with Thunder and Lightning and Miracles of Modern Science. Other familiar names on the schedule include Toys and Tiny Instruments, Murder Mystery and Ethan Lipton Tickets are available for all shows.

The full music schedule is below..

Surfer Blood

After an exhausting CMJ full of shows including the BV party at Pianos on Thursday (10/22), Surfer Blood are back as part a tour that keeps them on the road for the next month. They open shows for both Art Brut and Japandroids along the way. The Florida band is one of two openers for Art Brut at Brooklyn Bowl tonight (11/13). The other is Midnight Masses.

Right before CMJ it was announced that Surfer Blood signed to Kanine Records. The Brooklyn label will release their album Astro Coast on January 19, 2010. Art Brut also plays Bowery Ballroom on Sunday (11/15), but the openers on that show are Jeffrey Lewis and Murder Mystery.

All Surfer Blood dates and more pictures from Pianos below...

At first i thought, "do I really ever need to see Art Brut again?" Then I listened to the new album (Art Brut vs. Satan - out now on Downtown Records), and thought, "I really do want to see Art Brut again!", especially if again happens at a venue as small as Mercury Lounge.

As you can see above, tickets are still available for three of the five NYC shows. All dates HERE.

As you can also see above, the final night, now unfortunately sold out, seems to be the most special. Not only will it be the final night, but Keith TOTP means they're keeping it in the family ("Minor US Indie Celebrity All Star Backing Band" included), and "special guest" means, well... "Special Guest". If I could take one guess, my guess would be Art Brut 47 (aka We are Scientists), but that is just a guess.

A video diary of the recording of the new Art Brut album, with producer Frank Black (who by the way is playing the Siren Festival this year), is posted below...
