Rival Schools have announced their new LP, Pedals, due on March 8th via Photo Finish/Atlantic. The release will be celebrated that day at Santos Party House as part of a short stint of tour dates for the band. Ticket info is forthcoming. Dates are below.
Pedals is currently up for pre-order at the band's site in various different incarnations (Rival Schools shoes? wow). The band also has a new video from the LP, for "Shot After Shot", which you can watch below.
Meanwhile, Sammy Siegler's old band Glassjaw were the secret guest headliner at Knitting Factory on Sunday (12/12) for the Sons Modern Holiday Party which also featured Unearthly Trance and Ultrageist. Much like they did last year at Maxwell's, Glassjaw's appearance was unannounced as they have a second upcoming show in the near future, January 1st at the sold-out Best Buy Theater. Pictures from the Brooklyn show are in this post.
Glassjaw/Thursday/Acid Tiger member side-project United Nations doesn't have any dates coming up, but both Acid Tiger and Thursday have some.
I Hate Our Freedom is another now-active Thursday side-project. Or to be more specific, they are Joseph Grillo (GARRISON, GOD FIRES MAN) Justin Scurti (MILHOUSE), Scott Winegard (TEXAS IS THE REASON, HOUSE & PARISH) and Tucker Rule (THURSDAY). I Hate Our Freedom plays Maxwell's on Thursday, 12/16 with Something About Death Or Dying who are "a new hardcore band featuring The Gaslight Anthem guitarist Alex Rosamilia."
Tucker Rule has also been playing drums in Murphy's Law lately. Maybe you'll see him behind the kit when Murphy's Law plays Trash Bar on New Years Eve with THE KRAYS, YUPPICIDE, SETBACK, CAUGHT IN A TRAP, and RUNNY.
Rival Schools' last NYC show was opening for Gaslight Anthem at Radio City Music Hall. A set of pictures from their set at that show is in this post too.
More Glassjaw pictures from Knitting Factory (sorry, none of Unearthly Trance or Ultrageist) and all Rival Schools tour dates, pictures and videos, below.
Murphy's Law on a Rocks Off boat in 2004 (more)
Rocks Off reports...
"It's with regret that due to unforeseen circumstances (aka pressure from local authorities who unfoundedly seem to think that our planned show will be a magnet for "violence"), tonights' Murphy's Law show has had to be cancelled. We appreciate it's very late in the day, however all tickets purchased through Ticketweb will automatically be refunded in full. If you bought from a physical outlet you will need to go there for a refund, We apologise for the short notice. We at Rocks Off were really looking forward to this show, as well as last night's Cro Mags show that we also were forced to cancel, and hope we can find a way to make it up to you all soon." [Rocks Off]That Murphy's Law show, which was unfairly cancelled, was scheduled for tonight (8/12) (
Last night's cancellation was also a last minute surprise for the hundreds of people that planned on checking out, and undoubtedly having a safe time with, the Cro-Mags on a boat. The band, probably John Joseph, posted the following to Facebook afterwards:
"Scumbag rich fux in NYCNo, the Cro-Mags weren't predicting the future. The Murphy's Law show that the Cro-Mags are referring to happened four years ago (they play a boat almost every year). A fight at that show caused the boat owners to get a little worried at the time, but things smoothed over shortly afterward and there was never a problem before or after that (not counting a drunken incident on a Van Halen tribute boat cruise).
who don't want their chump rich people to have to go to their yacht
past our crew, greased the cops and had our show canceled. Well, the
fact that assholes didn't know how to act at the Murphy's Law boat show,
or the hip hop idiots stabbing people didnt help either! SORRY
...EVERYONE - see you in Philly Saturday"
So why the trouble all of a sudden? And what "hip hop idiots stabbing people" do the Cro-Mags mean? Well, apparently about a month ago there was a stabbing AFTER a boat cruise near the West Side Highway. It wasn't a Rocks Off boat, but it was violence happening in Manhattan that was at least in a small part related to entertainment on a boat. That caused cops to be on alert, and Rocks Off felt it hard when about a zillion cops showed up to their Peter Rosenberg Birthday Bash on July 21st (he's a Hot 97 DJ). The birthday party, which was a Pete Rock & DJ Premier show, left the dock an hour late after cops reportedly boarded and looked around. The boat was then tailed by police who were also waiting for the boat when it got back to shore. Nobody was arrested or making any trouble though (except the cops!).
Now this. No other boats are affected at the moment (like Tao Seeger tonight for instance). Hopefully no more are either.
UPDATE, GOOD NEWS:
!! VENUE CHANGE !!UPDATE 2, BAD NEWS: Despite the announcement about the show moving being real, the venue is not confirming this show. They said they knew about a Murphy's Law afterparty, but not a performance. Stay tuned.
The Murphys Law | Jimmy G's B-Day show tonight is
NOTCANCELED but is relocated to a new venue!!! The annual boat trip was canceled and this great yearly event is now happening at Brauer Falls located at 245 Grand St in Brooklyn (across the street from Trash Bar) at 10pm.
Please spread the word and join the party!!!
UPDATE 3: Murphy's Law not playing Bruar Falls. See comments.

This is not an African tribal warrior - just a member of Yuppicide
Indecision was wrecking a sold out Knitting Factory, but in Manhattan, Yuppicide was playing their first headlining date at Santos Party House on 7/10 with Primitive Weapons and Old Yorke. The band recently played Black & Blue Bowl with Cro-Mags. Coming up they only have one other date on their radar at the moment, and that's day two of CT Punkfest on July 31st in New London Connecticut. The Festival will also feature Murphy's Law during it's three day run. Full lineup below.
More pics from Santos (we only got Yuppicide) and some video from the show is below...
Cro-Mags at Santos (more by Paul Birman)
In a show that could possibly rival the infamous Eyehategod-on-a-boat rager from October of last year, NYC hardcore greats Cro-Mags will play the Temptress on August 11th. Tickets are on sale. Bets are on as to how many people will attempt to dive off of the top floor into the crowd below.
The next day (8/12), the rage continues as Murphy's Law will play the Temptress as part of Jimmy Gestapo's "annual birthday bash". Tickets are still on sale. Murphy's Law have a DVD and a pair of new LPs on the way, a covers LP and an album of new material. The band will also reissue previous releases on vinyl via I Scream Records.
Full Murphy's Law dates and some video is below...
Murphy's Law @ the Khyber in Philly (via)
Three men who showed up in full Nazi regalia to a hardcore punk show at an Old City [Philadelphia] bar Friday night were attacked by as many as 50 people on the streets after leaving the venue, according to witnesses and club management.Philebrity points out that there was "a gay-themed DJ night" going on upstairs at the same club too. Awesome.
The headlining band at the Khyber that night was Murphy's Law, led by front man Jimmy G, who formerly went by the moniker Jimmy Gestapo.
In an e-mail to the Daily News, Jimmy G confirmed that some guys had showed up to the concert in "full Nazi field dress."
"And they did get their asses kicked," he wrote. "Again."
Khyber owner Stephen Simons, who was not at the show, said he had been told that the crowd inside "largely ignored and mocked" the three men. But after they exited the club, on 2nd Street near Chestnut, they were attacked by a group of up to 50 people, he said. "I guess being on 2nd Street in SS uniforms on a Friday night is a way to incite a semi-riot," Simons said. [Philadelphia Daily News] (via)
No pictures of the actual incident, but one night after Philly, the band played at Ralph's Diner in Worcester, Mass. Jimmy discussed the incident on stage. And though some people are saying maybe the nazis didn't get beat up, Jimmy says they were bloody (and that he warned them). Video of that below...

Fucked Up @ Culture Shock '08 (more by Leia Jospe)
SUNY Purchase's annual Culture Shock Festival is taking place this year on Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th.
You may remember 2008's Culture Shock as the festival where the mild mannered Canadians in Fucked Up "almost got arrested and their set got cut short" (as one commenter succinctly put it). Hopefully NYHC staples Murphy's Law will help make this year just as memorable (they are playing on Friday).
Culture Shock may or may not be open to the public/non-students -- a fact that sparked much debate last year.
The Tallest Man On Earth, currently on tour from Sweden (and in NYC as we speak), plays the fest on Saturday. Full 2009 line-up below...
by Black Bubblegum
You should see his Vampire Weekend tattoo!
The Black And Blue Bowl (aka Superbowl of Hardcore) is back at Studio B in 2009, with a lineup heavy on reunited and classic hardcore bands and headlined by the recently reunited Earth Crisis who, for my money, peaked with the line "A FIRESTORM TO PURIFYYYYYYYYYYYY!". Beware, similar to the previous statement, the following announcement CONTAINS LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERING:
