We caught sets from Eminem, Skrillex, Broken Bells, Major Lazer, Lana Del Rey, Icona Pop, The Head and the Heart, My Brightest Diamond, Interpol, Polica, Mac DeMarco and a few others, and pictures of those are in this post. My Brightest Diamond / Batala @ Bowery Ballroom - 9/25/14
My Brightest Diamond
My Brightest Diamond

My Brightest Diamond released her fifth album, This Is My Hand, last week (9/16) via Asthmatic Kitty and brought her tour in support of it to NYC for a Bowery Ballroom show last night (9/25). For these shows, Shara Worden's joined by longtime bassist Nathan Lithgow and drummer Tim Mulvenna, and she also brought out past collaborator DM Stith for vocals on a bunch of songs, and started the show with The Hungry March Band on horns, and Batala, an "all women Afrobrazillian Samba Reggae Drum Band," playing in the crowd. (They also drummed in the crowd between sets.) The sort-of-Bon-Iver-related Doe Paoro opened the show.

More pictures of the whole show below...

My Brightest Diamond at Bowery Ballroom in 2013 (more by Caroline Harrison)
MBD

Shara Worden is set to release her fifth My Brightest Diamond album, This Is My Hand, on September 16 via Asthmatic Kitty. The first single from the album, "Pressure," has MBD in great form, offering another helping of the arty chamber pop she's become known for. It sounds like a winner for longtime fans, and if you're unfamiliar, anyone who digs the last few St. Vincent records or Sufjan's Age of Adz should check this out too. You can listen over at NPR.

My Brightest Diamond has a European tour scheduled for the fall, and though no North American tour has been announced yet, there's a few dates scheduled including ACL and a NYC show happening just before that on September 25 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (6/6) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (6/4) at noon.

All dates (including a few Shara solo appearances) are listed, with the video for "Be Brave" from her last album, below...

Meshell Ndegeocello
Meshell

Multi-hyphenate talent Meshell Ndegeocello has a new album, Comet, Come To Me, due out June 3. The record features a guest appearances from My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden and you can check out two songs from the album: original song "Conviction" and a pretty cool cover of Whodini's "Friends." Stream them below.

Meshell will be playing a few shows over the next couple months, including a record release show at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge on June 3. Tickets for that show are on sale now and all dates are listed below.

Jef Barbara
IMAGE

Before that, Meshell will be displaying her instrumental prowess by playing bass with Montreal's Jef Barbara at two NYC shows this weekend: an early show (7 PM) at Pianos on Friday (5/16) with fellow Canadians Les Jupes, and then a late show at Baby's All Right on Sunday (5/18) with Ludwig Persik.

Jef Barbara is currently working on the follow-up to 2013's Soft to the Touch. If you haven't checked him out, here's what I wrote before:

Blurring genre and gender lines, Jef skips between minimal electro, shimmering and ethereal guitar pop, skronky new wave with forays into glam and krauty bachelor pad music -- all with élan and wit.
You can check out a few videos and a full stream of Soft to the Touch below. Jef's quite a live performer and having Ndegeocello on bass should make things extra interesting.

All Jef Barbara and Meshell Ndegeocello dates are listed, along with videos and streams, below...

Justin Vernon w/ Bon Iver in Austin in 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Bon Iver

Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who recently collaborated with Kanye West, and is also about release a new Volcano Choir album (aka his collaborative project with experimental rockers Collections of Colonies of Bees), is also working on a project with gospel group The Blind Boys of Alabama, who have been around since the 1930s. Earlier this year, he announced he'd be producing their new album, I'll Find A Way (due out 10/1 via Sony Masterworks), and it's since been revealed that he's contributing his vocals to a cover of Bob Dylan's "Every Grain of Sand" for the album. You can listen to that track now over at Pitchfork, and check out the full tracklist (which also includes collaborations with My Brightest Diamond, Sam Amidon, tUnE-yArDs, and more) below.

Speaking of Bob Dylan, his tour comes to the NYC-area for its first of five shows this week. The first show was initially supposed to happen in Bridgeport, CT on Friday (7/19) at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard with My Morning Jacket and Wilco, but that show has been moved to Bridgeport's Webster Bank Arena, and MMJ and Wilco are no longer on the bill. UPDATE: MMJ and Wilco are still playing. Tickets for the Webster Bank Arena show are available, and all tickets purchased for the Ballpark at Harbor Yard show will be honored.

Dylan, Wilco and MMJ kicked off the tour towards the end of last month, and at their recent Toronto show (7/15), Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and MMJ's Jim James joined Dylan on stage for a cover of traditional song "Twelve Gates to the City" and for Dylan's own "Blowin' in the Wind." You can watch a video of the former (via Consequence of Sound), along with the setlist from that show, below.

Bob Dylan also just announced that he'll release Bootleg Series. Vol. 10: Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), a box set that collects rarities and outtakes from the Self Portrait and New Morning era, on August 27. The trailer video and tracklist for the box set are below.

DJ /Rupture @ Ecstatic Music Fest, 2/2/2013
DJ rupture & Zs

"There's nothing you can do to avoid a museum-ification of your own work when you put out a retrospective box set, but we're doing everything we can to keep it fresh," said [Zs' saxophonist Sam] Hillmer, a thoughtful and passionate performer for whom Zs ("It just means us.") has always held a firm creative perspective.

Influenced by overlapping currents of radical sound--free jazz, the 20th century classical avant-garde, punk rock and underground noise--the musicians applied rigorous technique to embrace its enthusiasms without cliché. "One thing that was really prevalent at the time was this kind of salad-bar approach to creating innovative music," Mr. Hillmer said later, flashing back to the early 2000s, when a certain canned hybridization was in vogue. "'Classical music that rocks!' That's a view of music that tacitly renders styles as alienated from one another. We find that to be philosophically untenable and untrue." - [Wall Street Journal]

Avant garde ensemble Zs are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, and just played a collaborative show over the weekend (2/2) with DJ /Rupture at NYC's Merkin Concert Hall as part of The Ecstatic Music Festival. Zs and /Rupture did alternating mini-sets that fed off each other. Pictures from that performance are in this post.

The Ecstatic Music Fest continues on Wednesday (2/6) with Clogs and Sarah Kirkland Snider & Orchestra for the Next Century. Snider will be presenting Unremembered, a "13-song cycle set to poetry (and with accompanying projected artwork) by New-York-based poet/writer Nathaniel Bellows," and features vocal performances by DM Stith, My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden (who performed the opening night) and Padma Newsome. The latter will also appear with band/chamber ensemble Clogs. More info is here and tickets are still available.

Clogs (which also features Bryce Dessner) have a new EP out titled The Sundown Song and you can check out the video for the title track below.

MBD @ Bowery Ballroom, 1/23/2013
My Brightest Diamond

My Brightest Diamond played Bowery Ballroom on January 23 supported by local no wave revivalists Talk Normal. Shara Worden, the creative mind behind My Brightest Diamond, has a reputation for being an accomplished and energetic performer, frequently collaborating with other heavy hitters of indie rock. You may have heard her singing backup vocals on Sufjan Steven's Illinoise and the Age of Adz, or crooning the role of the evil queen in the Decemberists' Hazards of Love.

Worden's lush arrangements and complex songwriting betray her music school background. As impressive as the instrumentation is, the real selling point of My Brightest Diamond is Worden's unique voice. She mixes tonalities and techniques from jazz, folk, and opera, and she's pretty hard to pigeonhole into any one genre. She drifted gracefully through a polished, sometimes theatrical set. The only sour note of the evening was the addition of a Keyboard Cat-style drum machine under the powerful "Inside a Boy," the act's last number before the encore.

Openers Talk Normal are a slow burning, noisy two piece. They were an odd choice to pair with Worden's ethereal vibrato and multi-genre approach, but the contrast worked. Guitarist Sarah Register and drummer Andrya Ambro moaned and wailed and chanted their way through the set. They were earthy and hypnotic, at times reminiscent of the droning sounds of Liars or My Disco.

Bowery was the first of two NYC shows for Worden last week. On Friday (1/25) she also played the opening night of the Ecstatic Music Festival and we'll have pictures from that show soon. Meanwhile check out more pics (including one of the setlist) from Bowery below...

Beirut
Beirut

The inaugural, Dessner-curated Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival concluded on Saturday night (May 5) with performances from Beirut, Atlas Sound, My Brightest Diamond, Caveman and more.

There were whispers there'd be an unannounced set from The National, but the secret guest Phi Slamma Jamma was actually Arcade Fire's Will Butler, Jeremy Gara, Tim Kingsbury, and Richard Reed Parry who performed a bunch of covers (Ramones, R.E.M., Devo, Beatles and the Stones, among others) to cap out the Fest.

Night Two pictures HERE. Night one HERE. Lots of pictures from all of Saturday night's performers (including Sufjan), plus video of Atlas Sound (who also kept busy in others ways while in town), Caveman, Beirut and Phi Slamma Jamma performing a song each, below...

Crossing Brooklyn Ferry

Remember that Dessner brother-curated festival, "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," which is happening at BAM from May 3-5? And remember how when we posted the National-curated ATP lineup we suggested (for obvious reasons) that it might hint at the BAM lineup? Well, the lineup is out now, and there are definitely some similarities to that, and also not surprisingly, to the ongoing Ecstatic Music Festival which is great at highlighting the growing mix between indie rock and indie classical that the Dessners are huge fans of and participants in.

The three day Brooklyn Academy of Music festival includes The Antlers, My Brightest Diamond (w/ yMusic), Sharon Van Etten, and Buke and Gase who are all playing ATP, in addition to The Walkmen, St. VIncent, Beirut, Atlas Sound, Tyondai Braxton (formerly of Battles), Oneohtrix Point Never, Caveman, Sinkane, Twin Shadow, Jherek Bischoff, Pat Mahoney and Nancy Whang (DFA DJ set), Ava Luna, and others which are all listed below. As mentioned, the fest also includes the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and the NOW Ensemble.

3-Day Festival Passes go on sale Monday (3/5) to friends of BAM and Tuesday (3/6) to the general public. More details and schedule at the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry website.

ATP UK

The National have announced that they're headlining and curating at ATP in Minehead UK, which is happening from December 7-9, 2012. So far, in addition to The National, the lineup (not very surprisingly) includes Sharon Van Etten (who plays the sold out Mercury Lounge tonight), My Brightest Diamond, Wye Oak, Megafaun, The Antlers, Buke and Gase (FKA Buke and Gass), Lower Dens, Owen Pallett, Boris, Tim Hecker, Kronos Quartet, Suuns< and Dark Dark Dark. More artists TBA. Tickets go on sale Friday (1/20) at 2 PM.

Maybe this lineup will shed some light on the bands Aaron and Bryce Dessner will be choosing when they curate BAM in May.

ATP's NJ festival happens in September and is being curated by Greg Dulli.

Speaking of Lower Dens, they've just revealed plans to release a followup to their 2010 debut LP, Twin-Hand Movement. The new album, titled Nootropics, will be out April 30 via the Domino affiliate label Ribbon Music. Grab the fast paced lead single, "Brains," at the top of this post and stream it below. The National

National week at Beacon Theater continued on Friday night, 12/16, for the fifth night in a row. Shara Worden's project My Brightest Diamond opened the show and she later joined The National on stage as did Thomas Bartlett aka Doveman, Richard Reed Parry of the Arcade Fire, Conrad Doucette, Rob Moose, Nadia Sirota and string quartet yMusic... and Phish's Trey Anastasio who members of the National are working with right now. As Jambands.com points out:

"The Phish guitarist emerged partway through the group's set for "Blood Buzz Ohio," "Squalor Victoria" and "Murder Me Rachel." While onstage, the members of The National described the guitarist as "a hero of ours." Anastasio reemerged alongside Arcade Fire multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry the evening's opening act My Brightest Diamond to play guitar on "Terrible Love." All of the night's guests then joined the members of The National for an acoustic sing-along based around "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks." National frontman Matt Berninger was particularly chatty throughout the show, jokingly describing Parry as a member of Kings of Leon and declaring "that's the sound of faces melting" after Anastasio's performance."
