Young Widows at Cake Shop (more by Markus Shaffer)

Always evolving on each LP is what Young Widows does best, and the Louisville trio is prepping to release their latest creation In and Out of Youth and Lightness for Temporary Residence Limited. Preorder the LP now via the label (it drops 4/12). Download "Future Heart" from the new album now for free above. The song also rears its head on a limited 7" with non-album track "Rose Window" which you can also download above.
Ever the road warriors, Evan Patterson & the boys will hit the pavement for a string of US dates with the also awesome My Disco (who toured with them previously) that will include dates from coast to coast, and one NYC show on May 7 at Union Pool with Xaddax (ex-Dazzling Killmen). All tour dates are below, alongside a brief chat with Evan about the direction of the new LP and its influences...

Though Australia's My Disco derive their name from a Big Black song, this trio have more in common with the dancable post-punk rhythms of Gang of Four. In fact, My Disco explore krautrock, minimalism, and art-punk ala Wire alongside punk-funk rhythms on Little Joy, the band's debut for Temporary Residence Limited. The release, due on Jan 25th on CD and 2LP, features the burners "A Turreted Berg" (available for the first time here) and "Closer", which are both streaming below and downloadable above. Preorder a copy on vinyl and the first 200 get a limited edition colorway.
If you're wondering where you may have heard the name My Disco before, it might have been when the band toured the US and played Europa in 2009 with tourmates Young Widows. It was at that Europa show that Evan Patterson filled in for bassist Liam due to a theft of his passport. The band also shared a split with Young Widows as part of their split 7" series on TRL. Speaking of Young Widows, we recently asked Evan Patterson and his brother Ryan (of Coliseum) about their highlights of 2010.
All My Disco tour dates (none in the US), as well as song streams are below.

Young Widows, Tournament, a bass-less (we'll explain) My Disco, and The Austerity Program played Europa on April 1st part of a trek that had YW scooting all over the US including down to SXSW to play the BV day party with The Bronx, Annhilation Time, Trash Talk, Garotas Suecas, and Psychedelic Horseshit.
My Disco also made it down to SXSW, as well as the Bell House, though not much further, it seems:
Hello,That statement wasn't entirely true though, as My Disco ended up playing Europa as a duo, as evidenced in the pictures below....
Due to a theft that occurred at our show in Toronto over the weekend, we can no longer continue the rest of our tour dates in North America. I cannot re-enter the USA as a passport was taken in the theft. I am being sent home to the UK tomorrow night. Our apologies to those who have helped in organising these shows, and for those that were hoping to see us. A special thanks to Young Widows for inviting us to join them on this tour. All shows will continue, just without us. Please support these shows. Young Widows are an amazing band, and now close friends of ours. We thank them most of all...Thanks, we're hopeful we will return in the fall.
Liam Andrews, Ben Andrews, Rohan Rebeiro.

Young Widows @ Red 7 in Austin - March 21, 2009

Young Widows are in town, and the Louisville Sluggers will be joined by like-minded Aussies My Disco, as well as punks Tournament and caustic drum machine killers of The Austerity Program. I'm talking about the show at Europa in Brooklyn TONIGHT (4/1). Tickets are still available. Fans of The Austerity Program can also check for the band at Union Pool on April 26th if you can't make it tonight (shame on you).
In other news, Young Widows' current -uh- recording residence, Temporary Residence Limited, recently announced the signing of Pinback to their label... a move they proudly label "PINBACK + TEMPORARY RESIDENCE = PB&J W/ THE CRUSTS CUT OFF!". Agreed, though I guess it depends on the type of jelly.
Pinback would like to thank Touch and Go Records for putting out our last 2 releases. We have nothing but good things to say about the label. It's hard to see them go. The releases that they did over the last 25+ years have been an inspiration to us, and it was an honor to be on the label.... At the same time we are looking forward to starting a new chapter in Pinback's future with Temporary Residence... We can't wait and are looking forward to writing a solid new record for them."This is not the first TRL / Rob Crow (of Pinback) joint venture. They released his solo album Living Well on the label in 2007.
Pinback played Music Hall of Williamsburg with Kylesa in October, and Rob Crow's "alleged" side project Goblin Cock played Highline Ballroom in February.
Young Widows were busy-as-all-get-out during SXSW, but still found time to add a last minute, late show at Red 7 on March 21st (the final night of SXSW). They did it to open for the almighty Frodus who used a lot of Young Widows' gear (and who also played hours earlier at Radio Room). Young Widows pics from that show are above and below (Frodus pics coming one day soon).

The Drones

Call the Army! It's an invasion! Over the next two months, bands from Australia will swarm down (under) and barrage us with a ton of shows in North America including NYC ones at Pianos, Mercury Lounge, Europa, and The Bell House, and of course a bunch of performances in Austin for SXSW.
First up, The Drones have a new album entitled Havilah on ATP Recordings and the quartet is back in the USA in 2009, a scant six months after killin' it ATP New York and playing a string of NYC shows in 2008. The NYC shows are at Union Hall with The War On Drugs on 3/30 (tickets on sale soon) and at The Bell House on 3/26 (tickets on sale now).
The Bell House show is particularly interesting (especially if you aren't a vegan)
THE AUSSIE BBQ: AUSTRALIAN MUSIC SHOWCASEThere's also a similar Australian BBQ / music showcase happening in Austin during SXSW. Details on that, and all Drones dates below.
Admission comes with free BBQ courtesy of SHEEP STATION and one free drink. Featuring tons of amazing Australian bands like
THE DRONES / THE FUMES / YOUTH GROUP / THE GRATES / THE RESIGNATORS / THE RED RIDERS / THE BOAT PEOPLE / INFUSION / HELL CITY GLAMOURS. Free Baron's Beer!!
One of the bands on BOTH BBQ fests (NYC and SXSW), Youth Group, will release their new album The Night Is Ours on April 7th in the US. The crew has also laid out April residencies in NYC, Philadelphia and Boston. The NYC residency is at Pianos every Tuesday in April (April 7, 14, 21, 28). Philadelphia is every Wednesday at the M room, and Boston is Sundays at TT Bear's. Full tour dates are below.
Another band on both bills... it's the return of The Grates (pictured). They are touring the US around those dates and SXSW, including a show at Mercury Lounge on March 23rd with Sky Larkin (no tix), and one at Pianos with Micachu on March 25th (tickets on sale).
My Disco, an angular post-punk trio that worships at the altar of Albini so much that they named their band after a Big Black song, will tour the US with the not-Aussie Young Widows after their trip to the Lone Star state. Full tour dates are below, including a show at Europa on April 1st. Tickets are on sale.
The War On Drugs (not Australian) are currently touring Europe, but will hit the road in the end of March for a US tour that includes the NYC date mentioned above.
All tour dates for everyone below...
