"Billy Idol is going to be on this stage," Mikaiah [of The Bots] told the crowd during their set. Adding, "Maybe he'll say hi to me backstage." And while it never actually played out that way, the brothers did see a whole lot of Tove Lo at her set a few hours later. "Her boobs were the highlight of the day for me," Mikaiah told Billboard. "She flashed the crowd three or four songs in!" [Billboard]The Sweetlife Festival went down at Columbia, MD's Merriweather Post Pavillion this past weekend (May 30-31). Day 1 was headlined by Kendrick Lamar, who recently collaborated with festival founders Sweetgreen for the "Beets Don't Kale My Vibe" salad. Kendrick brought up Sweetgreen CEO Jonathan Neman for "m.A.A.d city" after asking a fan to come on stage and rap with him, but said the only qualification is you have to know every word to "m.A.A.d city." Jonathan... did not know the words and Kendrick very quickly kicked him off the stage. Instead he brought up another fan named Ayanna who did in fact know every word and was quite the enthusiastic performer too. Video of that is below.
Kendrick also brought out SZA during his set (video of them playing "Poetic Justice" below), and she also played her own set that day too. Her wardrobe at the fest was pretty revealing, but she kept it PG 13-rated, unlike pop singer Tove Lo, who seems to be making it a tradition of flashing her fans during concerts. Video of her doing so at Sweetlife (which you shouldn't watch at work) is below. As you can see above, The Bots were stoked.
Also on day 1 was Sinkane, and pictures of him, SZA and Kendrick are in this post. The Pixies played that day too. We missed them, but we did just catch them in NYC and NJ. Billy Idol and Lucius played that day too, and pictures of their sets are here.

Williamsburg venue Baby's All Right continued their one year birthday celebrations last night with a packed night of shows starting with a triple Mexican Summer-signed bill (part of a two-day celebration for the label that started Wednesday at Glasslands) that began with sets by Weyes Blood (whose new album The Innocents comes out Tuesday, and is streaming below) and Quilt who were one of the first (non-CMJ) bands to play Baby's when it opened last year (they were terrific as usual). The show tripled as a benefit for Shoe4Africa, a charity that promotes health, physical fitness and education in Africa.
The venue was decked out with party store birthday party decorations including balloons, streamers, and piles of glittery confetti. There was also someone dressed up like a baby who was giving out shots. Before Connan Mockasin's set the venue space went dark and stuff was loaded on to the stage. Something was up.
A little after 11 PM, the lights came back on and there was a giant (cardboard) cake on stage. Connan came on stage, as did Perfect Pussy's Meredith Graves who was holding an actual cake that she baked, which was a replica of the giant one. The real cake had a lit "1" candle on it. Connan and Meredith then led a crowd sing-a-long of "Happy Birthday", and then a shirtless Mac DeMarco (who has also played Baby's, but whose next show is at Terminal 5 with Connan) popped out of the giant cake, cigarette dangling off his lip, mic in hand to finish up the song and blow out the candle. Mac and the giant cake were then flung into the audience.
Headlining the "early show" (the "late" Ryn Weaver show started after 1am) was the free-spirited, wavy blond haired Connan Mockasin (not to be confused with Ariel Pink who also recently played an after-midnight show at Baby's). Connan warned the crowd that they hadn't played in two months and the set might be rough, but it was a typical loose, wild set from the New Zealander and his talented band (which included Ariel Pink guitarist Tim Koh for much of it), with as much between-song banter as there was music with friends -- not to mention the Big Baby coming and going, joining the band here and there.
At one point Connan said their last NYC show, which was at MHOW, had 30% of the crowd get naked and asked what we thought of that. At least a few folks, including two girls in front of us, thought that was their cue to whip off their shirts. (They then put them back on, at least for the moment.) Connan also sang happy birthday to Baby's again at midnight before closing with an extended version of "Forever Dolphin Love." (The song is 10 minutes as it is.) For the encore, Connan brought his whole band back on stage, plus good friend Liam Finn and most of his band, plus Mac DeMarco and Kiki of course. Things quickly turned even more interesting as a shirtless Connan, still stuck on besting the 30% naked average, kept encouraging everyone to take their clothes off. All the male members of Connan's band obliged, as did many men in the crowd, and many women as well. Those near the front who weren't sure at first, were urged along by Conanan's keyboardist Sofia Karchi, who jumped into the crowd to help shirts over people's heads. After an improvised cover of "Tutti Fruity," it was back to banter mode. He encouraged the now at least 10% topless room to sit down, where Connan told the still-shirted members of the audience he didn't hold it against them, sheepishly admitting that if he was at a show where the singer was asking folks to get naked, he wouldn't do it. The night ended around 1 AM with a loose take on "Megumi the Milkyway Above." What was supposed to be a 30-minute set hit an hour-and-a-half.
We didn't stick around, but as mentioned, wannabe pop star Ryn Weaver (whose next show is at Bowery Ballroom during CMJ) played her 2nd ever show even later (her first show was at Baby's two nights earlier).

Musician, performance artist and crowdfunding genius Amanda Palmer has announced she'll be releasing a book she wrote called "The Art of Asking or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help". Today she released the cover photo (above), as well as a series of completely uncensored naked photos from the same photo shoot.
Amanda has no live shows booked at the moment, but says to stay tuned for a book signing tour to be announced soon.

...Khaki shirts, olive pants and rainbow neckerchiefs: the Boy Scout uniform, pride-style -- a uniform that had never been seen on a group of marchers in New York City's pride parade before.Lots more pictures from the 2014 Gay Pride March below...
They had come to mark progress -- the Boy Scouts of America's breakthrough vote last year to end a decades-old policy of prohibiting openly gay youths from being scouts -- and to call for more. However, the organization, a touchstone of traditional America, still bars openly gay adults from participating as troop leaders or volunteers. Ending that ban has become a signature cause for the gay-rights movement.
"I want gay parents to have the opportunity to scout with their children," said Greg Bourke, 56, who said he was forced to step down as a leader of his son's troop in Kentucky two years ago after local Scouts officials learned he was gay and threatened to revoke the troop's charter. "Adult leaders should have the same opportunities as everyone else has to take part in an organization that's a bedrock of America."

As parade outfits go, the scouts' attire was among the tamest. Just ahead of them, one man's head bore a live parrot; another's back had sprouted enormous white wings. A third wore little more than a pair of red briefs spangled with gold medallions, and roller skates. - [NY Times]

Dum Dum Girls in San Francisco last night - 6/19/2014
It may feel pasty outside now, and it's going to be be even more "pastie" this Saturday in Brooklyn thanks to the annual Coney Island, pastie-filled Mermaid Parade! Look out for the de Blasios at the beach-side, burlesque extravaganza.
From there, hop on the F to Park Slope because the pastie-loving Dum Dum Girls play what is probably their biggest NYC show yet, a headlining appearance in Prospect Park as part of the free Celebrate Brooklyn summer concert series. Hospitality and TEEN round out the all-female-fronted, indie rock bill on the stage where the National just played three nights in a row. This is a great bill of music AND FREE.
That said, Celebrate Brooklyn is a family friendly environment, so we bet that the Dum Dums will go with a more conservative version of their outfits (we love them no matter what they wear). That was not the case at a Goose Island sponsored FADER party last night at Folsom Street Foundry in San Francisco though. There, Dee Dee did just the opposite and wore a top that is definitely Not Safe For Instagram. We applaud her bravery. NSFW/NSFI pictures from the show are in this post along with their 14 song setlist (Smiths cover included). More below...
Ejecta, the duo of Neon Indian's Leanne Macomber and Ford & Lopatin's Joel Ford, put out their debut album, Dominae, last year and now one of its singles, "Eleanor Lye," has been given video treatment (by Allie Avital Tspyin of BANGS). As you may have realized by now, Leanne's character as Ejecta is almost always naked (like in press shots), and the new video is no different. See for yourself, below (unless you're at work).
Why always nude? Her press release notes:
Macomber describes Ejecta as a character, one that conceptually represents her various inner-struggles, and yet also as a way to "deflect" them. This alternate identity acts a conduit for Macomber's countless longings, and as such is always depicted completely nude.Leanne also spoke to Polari Magazine about it:
In all the artwork, you were photographed nude to portray this character. The final results are stunning but were you apprehensive about baring all for the artwork?Read more at Polari, at Hungarian site Recorder, and in the interview with Emmy the Great that Leanne, who is also in Fight Bite, did for Noisey.
Leanne: I grew up in the dark room around adults who, among other things, gave me the gift of bravery. I feel detached from myself when I'm this character, when I'm on stage. Art is a wonderful escape for the shy and awkward. Art is my armor.
That all said, Leanne was clothed at their live debut at CMJ 2013, and again when they played SXSW 2014. You can watch videos from both with the new NSFW video, below...

Major Lazer / the crowd / party's over early for some
The always-wild Mad Decent Block Party happened on Saturday (8/11) at Williamsburg Park, with Major Lazer, Matt & Kim, Dillon Francis, Flosstradamus, the occasional naked guy, and general debauchery. Once Williamsburg Park closed, the afterparty kept things going at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Flaming Lips in Toronto (more by David Andrako)
The Flaming Lips were planning on landing in Simsbury, CT on July 15th, but Simsbury, CT has decided Wayne Coyne and crew will need to make other plans:
The town has decided against having The Flaming Lips play at the performing arts center at Simsbury Meadows this summer.Major bummer Simsbury.
First Selectwoman Mary Glassman said the concert was conditionally approved pending a permit but that after conversations with Police Chief Peter Ingvertsen officials decided against the concert.
Glassman said the issue came down to staffing, and that it would have been difficult to get the necessary police officers in place for the concert, especially since the previously approved Emmylou Harris concert is planned for the following night. [Hartford Courant]
Meanwhile, the Flaming Lips have arrived in the NYC-area for a three-night run that looks like this:
Flaming Lips are here:Tune into Fallon tonight, get your tickets for the NJ show, and make sure to get to Prospect Park on Friday by 6:15!! The Darkness, Flaming Lips and Yeah Yeah Yeahs all on one bill has the makings of an epic show. It's just too bad that the Lips go on so early, and it's even sadder that the Darkness play at 4:45!

The always talented and controversial - mostly because she isn't afraid to try new things and speak her mind (especially on Twitter), Amanda Palmer, is playing a massive New Year's Eve show at NYC's Terminal 5 where she and The Grand Theft Orchestra will be performing Prince's Purple Rain in its entirety in addition to her original songs (get your tickets - regular or VIP).

what do you think happens next...
Hard to grasp, but Coachella starts again today. The three-day California festival is making history by throwing an exact replica of their festival one week later, and as you might remember, both weekends sold out almost instantly. Unfortunately for those of us who can't attend, especially those of us stuck at desks today, Saturday or Sunday, the festival will not be streaming again this weekend. However, you can repeatedly watch this video of a poor girl on a slip-n-slide from Coachella last weekend, below...

Weeknd tickets being scalped via Instagram...
Not since... Kraftwerk, have we seen a ticket as in demand as the one that will get you into one of the just-announced Weeknd shows. Many people that got shut out are very upset, and some (like us right now in this post), are writing about it.
The San Francisco Weekly points out that one alleged woman is allegedly offering sex for Weeknd tickets on Craigslist, though some quick searching reveals that the artful naked picture posted with the ad belongs to "Julia S From FEMJOY" (who happens to be posing in the Tyrolese Alps) (NSFW). Of course it is possible that Julia S is a huge Weeknd fan currently residing in or near San Francisco. Or maybe the offer is real, but just not the picture.
Meanwhile the Weeknd plays his/their first show Sunday at Coachella (which starts streaming online for those of us not there, momentarily)

Florida duo Blonds (not to be confused with NYC duo Blondes) are currently in NYC (and loving it) recording their full length album. The album will be the followup to their Dark Roots EP, which includes a cover of Radiohead's "Talk Show Host," and can be streamed in full on bandcamp. Of the Radiohead cover, singer Cari Rae told Rolling Stone:
"'Talk Show Host' is my favorite Radiohead song, but Jordy [Asher] was apprehensive to cover it at first because of his immense respect for the band. He said it was like attempting to play with perfection. I begged him for almost a month, and I'm happy to say my persistence paid off."The band is made up of Cari Rae and Jordy Asher (who are dating) and fit in well with the other boy/girl duos creating indie pop/dream pop lately (Stereogum compares them to Tennis & Cults). Check out the sexy video of EP track "206" (which they label NSFW), that they star in, below.
While Blonds are in NYC, they'll be playing some shows including an early show TONIGHT (3/21) at Mercury Lounge with Thunder and Lightning. $10 tickets for this show will be available at the door. They also play Pete's Candy Store on 3/28 with Tamsin, Pianos on 3/29 with Praha Depart, Yellow Monsters, Crying Nut, 3rd Line Butterfly, Sea Monsters, and Duologue (tickets) and Pete's Candy Store again on April 26.
If you catch their show at Mercury Lounge tonight, stick around to see Breton play a late show at the same venue.

DOWNLOAD: Gregory Scott Slay - Keep it a Secret (MP3)
Remy Zero founding member Gregory Scott Slay died from cystic fibrosis in January 2010 just as he was putting the finishing touches on his first new record in four years. That album, Horsethief Beats, finally saw release last month. The album's first single is "Keep it a Secret" and you can download it at the top of this post.
We've also got the premiere of that song's playful, slightly NSFW video, which was directed by Petro who has made clips for TV on the Radio and Active Child. Has has the video's star been possessed by Slay's spirit? Or other spirits? Check it out below.

Handsome Furs have released a new and NSFW video for "What About Us", the sixth track on their spankin' new LP Sound Kapital. Stereogum talked to the video's director Scott Coffey who explained how "the video ties into Sound Kapital's [NWFW] cover art?...
"I conceived the cover photograph. With the exception of the wonderful Chinese water park shots, the photo art was conceived by me during our video shoot -- the cover shot, the back cover of the Furs in the car with the creeping hand, the freeway and night shots where all taken as I made the video. Alexi and Dan chose that great shot of the naked woman on the car for the cover, but I didn't now that was going to be the cover when I shot it. I liked the idea of the album art and video being integrated. I like the idea of a unified vibe and theme for the album art and video. Sort of like the modern version of a 1970's concept album."Check that the video below.
Handsome Furs hit Webster Hall on August 18th as part of a larger US/EU tour that kicks off next week and ends in middle October. Tickets are still available for the NYC show, and all tour dates are below under the new video...

into Hunx's eyes at LPR in 2009 (more by Jake Forney)
"by the time HUNX AND HIS PUNX went on, i was kind of really wasted and my dance moves weren't as sharp. my hat was slipping all over the place and i felt sloppy. but whatever! that's what it's all about, right? anyway, hunx was wearing pantyhose as pants with thong underwear underneath and a shear jacket on top. he was amazing, and he and his punx all had matching blade runner stripes drawn across their eyes. the crowd was so fucking into it, and i wished that i hadn't worn my hat so i could have jammed out even harder. they finished their set a little after midnight, which surprised me. i thought i wasn't going to be heading home until after two. i grabbed the free beer that the bartender promised me and then i went home. my ears are still ringing! "After an opening set by Vivian Girls side project The Babies, Hunx & His Punx headlined Cake Shop on 10/16, the same night as BBQ and King Khan & The Shrines shows took place in different places around NYC. If you opted for BBQ or King Khan instead that night you're in luck; Hunx & His Punx, previously billed as "secret special guest", will play the Hardly Art CMJ showcase on 10/21 at Shea Stadium with Xray Eyeballs, Golden Triangle, Circle Pit, La Sera, Fergus & Geronimo, and Woven Bones. The announcement comes with the news that Hunx & His Punx have signed to Hardly Art, who will release their new LP in 2011.
[Randall, reviewing the Cake Shop show]
In related news, another artist on the Hardly Art bill, La Sera (aka Kickball Katy of the Vivian Girls) will hit the high seas with as part of a Pabst Blue Ribbon yacht party tomorrow from 2PM-6PM. Tweet at PBR_Brooklyn if you want on, but beware that the show has a "tight list". You can also catch La Sera at Irving Plaza tonight and Saturday night at the PureVolume House with Teen Inc.
Golden Triangle have a few CMJ dates in their warpath, as does fellow Hardly Art showcasers X-Ray Eyeballs (mems of GT) who will also play Don Pedro's the same night as their Shea Stadium show as part of the Impose series of shows.
King Khan reportedly joined (or was planning on joining) XRay Eyeballs on stage at Death By Audio Sunday night. Some joyous videos of the King Khan & the Shrines show at Santos (Darren Mabee included), and a recent live Hunx and His Punx video (naked people included) (NSFW), below...
one of Big Freedia's dancers @ PS1 (more by Zach Dilgard)
Big Freedia is blowin (bouncin) up. It's been roughly four months since the New Orleans resident was featured prominently in the New York Times Magazine, and she'll be making what is probably her network television debut tonight (9/30) on Last Call With Carson Daly. That's on after Fallon, so unless you stay up all night, set your DVR.
if you happen to be in Miami, well then you can also catch Freedia tonight at Vagabond. It's the next show on an ongoing tour that continues through Pop Montreal (10/3), some dates with Matt & Kim (10/11-10/13), CMJ and Fun Fun Fun Fest.
For CMJ, there are at least two NYC shows, both official, ticketed showcases and both on sale. There's the previously mentioned Windish showcase happening at Santos on October 23rd (tickets), and a show one night earlier at Southpaw with Javelin and Dominique Young Unique (who also plays the Santos show and who also played with Freedia at the final Pool Party of the summer).
And as if Big Freedia shows aren't dirty enough, she recently played one in an actual strip club and there's (NSFW) video footage. That video and all dates below...

There have been multiple instances (and multiple bands) where Frankie Rose (currently of Frankie and the Outs) has performed in revealing clothing (see above), but as far as I know this is the first time she's gone publicly topless, and by publicly I mean on countless NYC street corners via the cover of free weekly newspaper NY Press... which is pictured below...
