French producer Breakbot will be back with a second album Still Waters, which is out February 5 via Ed Banger/Because. Originally just the nom-de-funk of Thibaut Berland, Breakbot now officially includes singer Irfrane who has sung on singles like "Baby I'm Yours" and "One Out of Two." The first single from the new album is a typically '80s electro-R&B number titled "Get Lost." The video, directed by Dent de Cuir, is set at a wedding that goes disastrously wrong very quickly. Watch below.
Breakbot and Irfrane will be in NYC for New Year's Eve at Slake, a bill that also includes Gibbz, Alex English, Dali and Hiyawatha. Tickets are on sale and the flyer for the show is below. Ed Banger fans in NYC now have to make a choice: Breakbot or Justice?
The Slake show is Breakbot's only North American date upcoming, but they do have a European tour in the new year. All dates are listed below.
photo: Budos Band at Daptone Super Soul Revue 12/6/2014 (more by PSquared)
Jonathan Toubin knows his way around a party which is to say he's an in-demand dude during this festive time of year. He's got his fingers all of the following events...
On Wednesday (12/17) at Baby's All Right he'll be DJing the Peace & Love Holiday Ball which features live sets from The Budos Band, The Citizens Band and "surprise guests." The Citizens Band and the Budos Band ( who just played the Daptone Super Soul Revue) usually play bigger places than Baby's so here's a good chance to catch them somewhere more intimate. Tickets are on sale and benefit The David Lynch Foundation and the Ringo Starr Peace & Love Fund.
Then on Saturday (12/20) at Brooklyn Bowl, it's the holiday edition of Soul Clap and Dance Off with special guest selector Charles Bradley. It doubles as a release party for Norton Records' Souvenirs of the Soul Clap Vols 1 & 2. Tickets for Brooklyn Bowl are on sale now.
On New Year's Eve at Home Sweet Home, Nothing Changes is presenting the "New York Night Train Annual New Year's Ball" featuring live performances from Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds, Andy Animal's All Male Revue, and the debut of PMS and the Moodswings (featuring members of Habibi). Toubin and Josh Styles will be DJing and tickets will be available at the door. More info here.
Then on January 3 at Brooklyn Night Bazaar it's a "Captured Tracks/New York Night Train HAPPENING!" featuring live sets from Juan Wauters and EZTV, plus Hula Hoop Harlot Melissa Anne, DJ sets from Toubin and C/T head Mike Sniper. That show is free but you can RSVP to skip the line.
Jonathan Toubin will also be DJing the Glasslands Holiday Party on Sunday (12/21), the Detroit Cobras show at Baby's All Right on 1/2 (which is Detroit Cobras' second of two NYC shows that week, following Bowery Electric on 12/30) and some other gigs as well. All Jonathan Toubin dates are listed below.
Synthpop superstars Erasure have announced their new album, The Violet Flame, will be out via Mute on September 23. While they haven't released a song from the album yet, the album will be available for pre-order on May 28, and you can watch a trailer for album below featuring some new music which takes them a bit into EDM territory.
With the new record, Vince Clarke and Andy Bell will be taking Erasure on the road, which includes New Year's eve shows at NYC's Terminal 5 on December 30 & 31. Tickets for those T5 shows go on sale Friday (May 30) at noon, with Pledgemusic presales starting Wednesday (5/27) at 10 AM and an AmEx presale starting Wednesday at noon.
Vince Clarke will be in NYC sooner than that, DJing with Mute prez Daniel Miller at Bowery Ballroom on July 3 (Vince's birthday).
All tour dates are listed, along with the album trailer, below...
...and it's Elton John, whose friend Billy Joel did it last year. Tickets don't go on sale till September but, just so you know, in case you're making plans already.
Clutch in Austin in 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Dear friends, this week I've learned that a childhood injury to the neck, a genetic predisposition for spinal disease, and 20 some years of head banging will exact a toll. I've been diagnosed with an ugly case of cervical spinal stenosis and two herniated discs. Those dates include the Port Chester show that would've happened at Capitol Theatre on 9/26 which is now rescheduled for January 11 with The Sword and Crobot (tickets) and the Long Island show that would've happened at The Paramount on 9/27 (not rescheduled at the moment).
In some instances these conditions can be treated non-surgically. This is not the case for me. I have been advised by several neurosurgeons that my spinal cord has already been damaged and that I risk further damage were I not to address the situation. For this reason, I've decided to take care of this ASAP. Believe me, re scheduling a tour turns my stomach, but I believe this is the wisest choice given the prognosis.
On Tuesday I will undergo surgery. The procedure will fuse three vertebrae together with a small titanium plate. I have faith that this surgery will go as well as it can, and that I will be back in the saddle for our October-November tour. On behalf of my spine, deepest apologies to those who had been looking forward to seeing CLUTCH over the next two weeks. We'll make it up to you.
Health and Happiness,
The band's second leg of dates, which kick off in late October, are still happening as planned though. Those shows include a previously discussed NJ show happening at Starland Ballroom on December 27 (tickets), and they've also added a Brooklyn show happening on New Year's Eve (12/31) at Music Hall of Williamsburg. The Starland and MHOW shows will both be opened by reunited post-hardcore vets Into Another. Starland also includes Empire Escorts and Mike Dillon Band, and MHOW also includes Lionize. Tickets for the MHOW show go on sale Friday (9/20) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (9/18) at noon.
Updated dates are listed, along with a video, below...
Nas at Rock The Bells 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Life is good indeed. Nas will ring in the New Year in style, joined by Elle Varner when he takes to the stages of Radio City Music Hall on December 31 for a one-off show at the venue. Tickets for the show go on sale Friday (9/14) at noon... which, coincidentally, is Nas's 39th birthday.
Hopefully this show goes better for the Queensbridge MC than the New Year's show he was supposed to appear at in Angola.
My Morning Jacket at Williamsburg Park in August (more by David Andrako)
As mentioned, My Morning Jacket, who were in NYC for a show at Williamsburg Park, will return to the area at the end of the year for a three-night run at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre from December 27-29. The shows will be part of the band's Spontaneous Curation Series, where you can help pick what songs they play, and MMJ promise not to repeat songs on different nights. There will also be TBA guests at each night. Those shows were announced over a month ago and they just finally were given ticket links. Tickets for all three nights go on sale Friday (9/14) at noon.
Two days after that run ends, My Morning Jacket will play a New Year's Eve show at Boston's Agganis Arena (12/31) with Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who they've collaborated with in the past. This one won't be part of the curation series. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (9/14) at noon with a venue presale starting Thursday (9/13) at 10 AM.
As discussed, MMJ will also be in the NYC area for a Levon Helm tribute at the Izod Center on October 3 in East Rutherford, NJ with Ray LaMontagne, Mavis Staples, Lucinda Williams, Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes, Jorma Kaukonen, and more. Tickets for that show are still available.
