Good Room

A new club called the Good Room is in the process of opening in Greenpoint at 98 Meserole Ave. If that address sounds familiar, it's because it's the location of the Brooklyn venue previously and very recently known as Europa. Their first event was an invite-only party this past Saturday (10/25) with DFA DJs Nancy Whang and The Juan Maclean along with Nomi Ruiz. Club designer/legend Steven Lewis is reportedly the rebranded club's designer. Bedford and Bowery went that night:

The place's operators and handlers are still keeping it very much under wraps, but (oops!) a tweet from one of Saturday's other DJs, "trans superstar of tomorrow" Nomi Ruiz, reveals that veteran club maestro Steve Lewis designed the room, which is actually three rooms located up a flight of stairs. The first consists of a spacious dance floor surrounded by curved banquette seating. That room is outfitted with a bumping sound system that can be heard half a block away, plus the obligatory state-of-the-art lighting, smoke machines and disco ball. It opens onto another room dominated by a projecting rectangular bar. And off to the side is a smaller parlor where, behind the DJ booth, a wall of shelves stocked with vinyl give off a library vibe. On Saturday, techno and electronica dominated the main room while New Order and the like had people pogoing in the side room.
A Yelp reviewer also made it in:
Upon entering the door guys and security were very friendly. Once I walked up the stairs and entered the club, immediately I felt like I was in a very cool environment for enjoying house/techno/nudisco music. The dancefloor although not huge is very open, with a raised lounge area extending around the entire perimeter. The room is very dark with rotating blue spotlights on the ceiling beaming down on the dancefloor that make for a pretty awesome vibe on the floor. First thing I noticed was the sound on the floor was great! Perfect separation of the bass and overall very clear sound. The bar had fairly reasonable prices for a club, $6 beers (crappy selection though, Heinekin, Stella, and Amstel), and $8 mixed drinks.
Previews continue tonight (Halloween) with a private party from 9pm-12am that includes a "surprise guest", and then a more public party from midnight to 4am with DJs Tommy James, Ray Zuniga, and Modernluv. Both events tonight are hosted by Three Kings Tattoos (who just spent Friday and Saturday with us giving tattoos at Baby's All Right).

There was also an event there last night with another surprise guest (anyone know it was?) (UPDATE: it was Le Youth), and yet another surprise guest plays there on Saturday as part of THIS Dia De Los Muertos celebration.

Good Room

It's unclear if live shows will be returning to the location. We'll keep you posted.

Juan Maclean

The Juan Maclean just released a video for their single "A Simple Design." Directed by Gabe Imlay & Juliet Rios, the clip has Juan and Nancy Whang playing with paint and you can watch it below. The song, probably the catchiest song they've ever made and Nancy's most emotive vocals ever for sure, is from their enjoyable new album, In A Dream.

Both Juan and Nancy have DJ gigs coming up, many of which are together. First, Nancy (without Juan) will be the "DFA Special Guest" at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair on Saturday (9/27) where she'll spin from 4 - 4:30 PM. Also DJing: Jonathan Toubin, Silent Servant and more. Schedule's below. Then Juan and Nancy will both DJ at Cameo on October 3. Tickets are on sale.

All Juan Maclean/Nancy Whang DJ dates, plus the "A Simple Design" video and BK Flea Record Fair DJ schedule, below...

Museum of Love

DFA Records threw one helluva party last year to celebrate their 12th Anniversary. This year they're throwing another party, a smaller scale summer soiree if you will (actually, that's what they're calling it), at The Wick on August 23. It will feature the NYC live debut of Pat Mahony's new band, The Museum of Love, plus DJ sets from Sinkane, Nancy Whang, Holy Ghost, plus a "special guest TBA."  Tickets for the show go on sale Monday (8/4) at noon.

In related news, you can catch Sinkane performing live at The Lot LIC Music & Film Series kickoff show which happens Saturday (8/2) afternoon (3 - 9 PM) and is free.

The Juan Maclean, who have a new album out soon and seem suspiciously absent from the DFA party lineup (along with Shit Robot and you-know-who), will be DJing at Output on August 16 as part of the afternoon "Kaviar Disco Club" party (tickets).

Flyer for the DFA Summer Soiree and Sinkane's The Lot show, plus a couple Museum of Love tracks, below...

In a Dream

The Juan Maclean will back with a new album, In a Dream, on September 15 via DFA. It's their first since 2009's The Future Will Come. That's the cover art above featuring Nancy Whang who is, if the press release is to be believed, truly front-and-center on this new album. Where her style in the past has always been detached cool, Whang gets emotive this time out. You can get a taste of that on first single "A Place Called Space" which, with its arpeggiated lines and solo-ing guitars, sounds maybe just a little like the Miami Vice theme. Stream that below.

While no live performance dates have been announced, The Juan Maclean maybe soon be DJing at a venue near you. They'll be DJing Brooklyn club Verboten on June 26 with onetime DFA associate Tim Sweeney. Tickets for that Verboten night are on sale now. They'll also be DJing at Output on August 16 for the afternoon "Kaviar Disco Club" party on their roof with Beto Cravioto and Travmatic also on the bill. Tickets for Output are on sale as well.

Meanwhile, Nancy will be DJing without Juan at Brooklyn Bowl on July 5 with Danz of Computer Magic. That begins around midnight and tickets are on sale.

All Juan Maclean DJ dates are listed, along with the new song, below...

Just in time for Valentine's Day, The Juan Maclean have a new single, "Get Down (With My Love)." The song made its premiere on NPR who say it's the final cut of their three-part "dance-floor trilogy" (last year's "You Are My Destiny" and "Feel Like Movin'" were the other two). I would argue most of The Juan Maclean's songs are aimed at the dancefloor, but let's not quibble -- this one's good, a standard-bearer DFA pop house cut in the best possible way. The full version is out next week but you can download the radio edit above or stream it, along with the two other parts to the trilogy, below.

In other news, Juan Maclean will be DJing Output on March 6. It's a FIXED party with Tensnake, and JDH & Dave P. Tickets are on sale now.

Streams below...

Shit Robot

Shit Robot's been at it for a while, but his only full length album is still his 2010 debut From the Cradle to the Rave. That will change when he finally releases its followup, We Got a Love, on March 18 via DFA Records. Like his first album, this one features a number of guests, including Reggie Watts, Museum of Love, Nancy Whang, Lidell Townsell, The Rapture's Luke Jenner and Holly Backler. Reggie appears on two songs, including the title track which was released as a single a while back and its video can be watched, along with a stream of the Paul Woolford remix of the track, below. That's the album artwork above and the tracklist is below.

As discussed, Shit Robot is DJing the NYC stop on John Talabot's upcoming tour happening at SRB Brooklyn on February 7 with FIXED DJs JDH & Dave P. Tickets for that show are on sale now. He has a few other upcoming dates, all of which are listed below.

And speaking of Reggie Watts, we just posted a video of him performing at the Okayplayer Holiday Jam.

All dates are listed, along with the video, stream and tracklist, below...

Pitchfork

It's got what some people might call the worst song ever, the song with the most talked-about rap verse of the year, some surprises, and some of the year's most undeniable songs. Their #1 pick is certainly one of those undeniable songs, whether or not you're a fan of the artist who made it. What do you think of their list? Did your favorite song make it? Any glaring omissions?

people waiting to get in Sunday morning (via)
GoogaMooga

They really thought they were going to open today. They even announced that more tickets were being released today and that James Murphy, following in Sharon Jones's footsteps, had cancelled his performance today due to a family emergency. But the rain has won, and the second day of the 2nd GoogaMooga is now officially CANCELLED. The people pictured above waiting to get in today are probably especially upset.

Official reason: "NYC Parks Dept, Prospect Park Alliance & #Googamooga have canceled today's event in the interest of safety & prevention of damage to park."

All Sunday VIP ticket purchases will be refunded in full.

Bands and DJS that were supposed to play today included Delicate Steve, Cults, De La Soul, Kool & the Gang (instead of Sharon Jones), Nancy Whang & Pat Mahoney (instead of James Murphy), and M.A.K.U. Sound System.

Stay tuned for our pictures from Friday and Saturday, coming soon. Meanwhile watch a channel 12 video report that was filmed in the park early Saturday (it claims GoogaMooga will be back "bigger and better in 2014"), and a video of the Flaming Lips playing "You Lust" on Friday (you can hear people screaming "Vaseline, Vaseline!"), below...

this is where the DFA anniversary is happening
grand-prospect-hall

NYCers might be familiar with the infamous commercials for the spectacular Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn, with the proprieters finishing off the commercial by yelling "WE MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE" at the top of their lungs. I've always thought that the venue -- which is truly fantastic in the textbook definition of the word -- might make an interesting space for a musical event. It has before, including being the home of the world-music oriented Golden Fest.

Apparently I was not alone. We've mentioned it, but never fully given it the attention it deserves. As part of the massive Red Bull Music Academy takeover of NYC next month, DFA Records will make their dreams come true by hosting their 12th anniversary of party at the dazzling space on May 25, featuring a veritable army of the DFA crew including DJs and live sets from James Murphy, The Rapture, Black Dice (live set), Juan Maclean, Pat Mahoney, The Crystal Ark (live set), YACHT (live set), Sh*t Robot (live set), Planningtorock (live set), Prinzhorn Dance School (live set, their US debut), Still Going, Nancy Whang, Tim Sweeney, Larry Gus, Dan Bodan and Marcus Marr. There are bound to be some surprises in store as well and seems likely to be a very memorable night.

Tickets are still available, but reportedly "dangerously close to selling out."

Tickets are also still available for the RBMA talk with James Murphy at NYU. Browse RBMA's full lineup for more amazing events.

DFA-related videos and those classic Grand Prospect Hall commercials are below.

French Horn Rebellion have just announced a "Party Ensemble Residency" that will happen on four consecutive Fridays from April 19 - May 10 at Brooklyn Bowl and each one features a different set of collaborators. April 19 features '80s pop icon Jody Watley (who features on their "Cold Enough" single), plus Body Language DJ set and Ernesto of Penguin Prison; April 26 is billed as "Savoiring the Night" and if you note the spelling you might make guesses as to who the "special guests" might be; May 3 features a live set from Auto Body, plus help from Le Tigre's JD Samson (who guests on "Girls"), plus Ernesto again and a DJ set from Dirty Grand; and the final Friday (5/10) is with Nancy Whang (LCD/Juan Maclean), JPatt of the Knocks and Ernesto. All four shows feature FHR with their full band The Great Apes and tickets are on sale now. Flyer for the residency is below.

Two new remixes of "Girls" (feat. JD Samson and Fat Tony) were released today (by FM Attack and Rogue Vogue) were released today and you can stream them below, along with their recent Love is Dangerous EP and a few other FHR tracks. The band are also heading to SXSW and playing other shows after it, and all tour dates are listed below.

Shit Robot opening for LCD Soundsystem @ T5 (more by Andrew St. Clair)
Shit Robot

DFA beatmaker Shit Robot (aka Marcus Lambkin) released a new 12" on DFA, the first of three in his Green Machine series to be released throughout 2012. You can stream both sides -- "Teenage Bass" and "Space Race" -- at the bottom of this post. Shit Robot is touring select cities throughout the summer, kicking things off here in NYC with a DJ set tonight (5/24) at Hudson Terrace with Juan Maclean/LCD's Nancy Whang and Sean Glass. Doors are at 10PM and it's FREE till Midnight with RSVP. Nancy sang on Shit Robot's single "Take 'Em Up" so chances of cross-pollination seem likely. If the weather doesn't improve, the Hudson Terrace has a retractable roof so you won't get wet.

A list of all Shit Robot tour dates, plus the stream of that new single and a couple videos, are below...

Beirut
Beirut

The inaugural, Dessner-curated Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival concluded on Saturday night (May 5) with performances from Beirut, Atlas Sound, My Brightest Diamond, Caveman and more.

There were whispers there'd be an unannounced set from The National, but the secret guest Phi Slamma Jamma was actually Arcade Fire's Will Butler, Jeremy Gara, Tim Kingsbury, and Richard Reed Parry who performed a bunch of covers (Ramones, R.E.M., Devo, Beatles and the Stones, among others) to cap out the Fest.

Night Two pictures HERE. Night one HERE. Lots of pictures from all of Saturday night's performers (including Sufjan), plus video of Atlas Sound (who also kept busy in others ways while in town), Caveman, Beirut and Phi Slamma Jamma performing a song each, below...

Crossing Brooklyn Ferry

Remember that Dessner brother-curated festival, "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," which is happening at BAM from May 3-5? And remember how when we posted the National-curated ATP lineup we suggested (for obvious reasons) that it might hint at the BAM lineup? Well, the lineup is out now, and there are definitely some similarities to that, and also not surprisingly, to the ongoing Ecstatic Music Festival which is great at highlighting the growing mix between indie rock and indie classical that the Dessners are huge fans of and participants in.

The three day Brooklyn Academy of Music festival includes The Antlers, My Brightest Diamond (w/ yMusic), Sharon Van Etten, and Buke and Gase who are all playing ATP, in addition to The Walkmen, St. VIncent, Beirut, Atlas Sound, Tyondai Braxton (formerly of Battles), Oneohtrix Point Never, Caveman, Sinkane, Twin Shadow, Jherek Bischoff, Pat Mahoney and Nancy Whang (DFA DJ set), Ava Luna, and others which are all listed below. As mentioned, the fest also includes the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and the NOW Ensemble.

3-Day Festival Passes go on sale Monday (3/5) to friends of BAM and Tuesday (3/6) to the general public. More details and schedule at the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry website.

Full lineup below...
