Alt-J on 'Conan'

Alt-J, who rolled through NYC about a month ago, are currently on the West Coast for the two-weekend marathon known as Coachella (weekend 2 starts today). In between appearances in Indio, the band stopped by Conan to play their single "Breezeblocks" and you can watch that below.
Meanwhile, the UK act also recently got the grilled-with-gifts treatment from Vancouver notable Nardwuar. You can watch that interaction below as well too.

Cat Power made a video for "Manhattan" from her latest album.Sun. As you might expect from the title, it's got some nice shots of the city. Watch it below.
Nardwuar's latest interview target is Kitty (Pride) and you can watch the Vancouver DJ bestow her with gifts and get her to tell stories about getting drunk on Mike's Hard Lemonade in the video below.
Besnard Lakes, who will be here in a few weeks, made a trippy new video for "People of the Sticks" from their new album Until in Excesss, Imperceptible UFO and you can watch that below. You can stream the whole album at Pitchfork.
What else?

We're all used to seeing Vancouver DJ and Evaporators frontman, Narduwar, interviewing oodles of bands and bringing a suitcase full of props to wow them. Following an interview with Pharrell Williams, the hip hop producer officially turned the tables and interviewed the Human Serviette in a familiar heavily-gifted style. (Nardwuar first blew Pharrell's mind with his research skills in 2008.) Both took place during SXSW 2013 and you can watch them below.

Orlando producer XXYYXX (aka Marcel Everett) has dropped a number of releases and remixes over the past couple years, pulling from ambience, downtempo, and dubstep. Those releases include his 2012 self titled album, which you can stream below or download at bandcamp (name your price).
XXYYXX will be heading out on a tour with Teen Daze (who will be DJing at the shows) of the US and Mexico this February and March, before heading to Austin for SXSW. That tour includes the previously discussed NYC show on February 21 at 285 Kent, which is now sold out, but XXYYXX has added a late show happening at the venue that same night. Tickets for the newly added show are on sale now. An updated list of dates and the tour flyer are below.
XXYYXX was also just interviewed by Human Serviette Nardwuar, who, in typical Nardwuar fashion, bombarded him with questions about Marcel's obscure past projects (including a hardcore band!) and gifted him with vinyl of artists he has sampled in his songs. You can watch that video, along with the list of tour dates and song streams, below.
As you may know, when Nardwuar interviews people he often brings them gifts. But we think this may be a first. After being interviewed by "the Human Serviette," Minneapolis rapper Brother Ali sampled the records Nardwaur gave him and made a song out of it. Says Brother Ali:
I've had the pleasure of being interviewed and featured in some of the most incredible publications but the most entertaining and interesting interviews Ive ever had was with the one and only Nardwuar. During our interview he gave me The original program to a Muhammad Ali exhibition fight in Vancouver and several records. First thing I did when I got home from the tour was listen through the records and make a beat from one of them. I ended up recording this song. Doot doola doot doot! You can stream Brother Ali's "Nardwuar" track (and watch the original interview) below...

Weekend headline a gloom-leaning bill at 285 Kent tonight that also includes LA's Cold Showers and Census. We caught Weekend's first show as Brooklynites at Cameo last week and they were great, with new songs heading in a dancier direction, albiet in a late '80s goth kind of way.
Melvins Lite's world record attempt at 50 states (plus DC) in 51 days rips into NYC tonight with a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
Meanwhile Jerry Seinfeld's non-record-breaking-but-still-cool five-borough tour hits Manhattan tonight for a show at Beacon Theatre.

There is just a crazy amount of amazing stuff going on tonight, it's kinda unfair to the discerning New York music lover. Perhaps biggest on the list is ATP NYC. Where else are you going to see Lightning Bolt, Phillip Glass and Frank Ocean all on the same bill?
You could also head to Mercury Lounge for two separate shows that really could have been one big one. The early show features utterly charming Welsh singer Cate le Bon with Quilt supporting; the late show is former Stereolab chanteuse Laetitia Sadier and Seattle's terrific Orca Team Maybe you can talk the door person into a two-fer dicount? (Probably not).
There is also the BV-presented Bad Powers, Sannhet and The Year is One show at Saint Vitus for those who like it loud and heavy.
As hinted at yesterday, Teengirl Fantasy will in fact be the special guest at 285 Kent tonight with Laurel Halo, Ital, M. Geddes Gengras, and Magic Touch. That show is one of the many dance options in NYC this weekend.
There is also the NYC debut of Cloud Nothings offshoot Chomp at Cameo, though Swearin' have had to drop off the bill due to a family emergency. Sleepies replace them on the bill that also includes Heaven's Gate.
Public Assembly's Et cetera festival is music oriented tonight, with Gang Gang Dance in the main room (one of three NYC shows they're doing this weekend) and Total Slacker, Indian Jewelry, Black Marble, and Plastic Flowers playing a free show in the back room. MNDR will DJ late night.
There's also Bruce at MetLife Stadium, and KISS, and Mötley Crüe at PNC Bank Arts Center. Basically, something for everybody tonight!

Nardwuar w/ Andrew WK // Reigning Sound

Calgary's multi-venue Sled Island festival took place at the end of last month. Pictures and a review of Day 1 are HERE, and now we continue with Day 2 is in this post.
We started the second night of the festival at National Music Centre, catching about a song and a half of a Vancouver band called Beekeeper. Their enthusiastic frontman invited the audience on stage for the last song, which began with a Latin rhythm and eventually took a turn toward psychedelic punk.
Next was We Are The City of Kelowna, British Columbia. Their set was rhythmic and dynamic, touching on many different genres like jazz, math rock, blues and R&B. They also brought some glitchy drumming into a new, keyboard-oriented song that they played. It was less conventional than the rest of their set, but still fit in well.
When Nardwuar took the stage with his band The Evaporators, he asked for more vocals in the monitor and then asked the audience, "Monitors. What does that remind you of?" After some responses from the audience, he went through a weird little association game with Titus Andronicus ("Tittus Andromedus" and other mispronunciations), who got their name from the boat that fought the Monitor in the Civil War. In Nardwuar's words, "A plus B equals C!" He mentioned up former New York governor Mario Cuomo and a Canadian gas station called Domo to start a chant of "Mario Cuomo works at Domo," which developed into the first song with a quick keyboard part from Nardwuar and a continuous drum beat. The second song started with some bizarre sumo grunts and jumps, which he made several audience members do with him until they formed a weird grunting conga line of sorts. They covered "Barney Rubble is My Double" by a Calgary band called The Hot Nasties, and performed an original song about blowing up a rock in a river called "Ripple Rock." The Evaporators simple pop-punk is made hilarious by Nardwuar's actions, weird inflections, and ridiculous choruses. He asked the audience to suspend him in the air, lying face down with a helmet on, with more fans holding his keyboard in front of him. When he asked for one more guy to help him out, he was joined by Sled Island co-curator Andrew W.K., who performed "Party Hard" with The Evaporators along with several other songs.
We made our way over to Republik, where we caught the end of Sled Island veterans Legs' set. Vocalist Allie Sheldan sang strongly with a raspy voice over some western-sounding guitar. They ended with a somber bluesy song called "I've Got a Sadness in My Heart."
Next was a Winnipeg powerpop duo called Cannon Bros, who had a touch of garage rock in their sound. Then we caught the upbeat pop rock of Calgary quartet Feel Alright, who blended reverby surf pop with a country edge. And then finally, a much anticipated set from Reigning Sound, whose rock and roll vibes made for a killer show.
Afterwards, we ventured over to Dickens to catch Hot Snakes, but after waiting in line for a half hour they declined to let anyone else in the venue for the sold-out show. Hot Snakes played Orion Fest in Atlantic City a few days later.
More pictures from Sled Island day 2 are below. Coverage of day 3 is coming soon...

Natureboy w/ Sharon Van Etten at Pianos - 6/28/12

Brooklyn's Natureboy (aka Sara Kermanshahi) wrapped up a residency at Pianos last Thursday (6/28). The residencies took place every Thursday in June, and each one featured a different lineup of artists. For the 6/28 show, Sara was joined by Doug Keith, Cat Martino, She Keeps Bees, The Roadside Graves, and DJ Sharon Van Etten, who, as predicted, joined Sara on stage during her set.
In related news, Sharon Van Etten and her bandmate Doug Keith were just interviewed by Nardwuar. A video of that interview is below, along with more pictures and videos from the Pianos show (unfortunately none of Roadside Graves).
Grimes @ Glasslands (pic by thedeskofjob)

One night after struggling through two shows at Mercury Lounge, Grimes toughed out her throat problems and played a super-sold-out show at Glasslands in Brooklyn. How was it? Check out some videos below.
A couple of weeks earlier Grimes was in Austin for SXSW (where she did not play a BV party and) where Nardwuar (who did play a BV party) caught up with the fellow Canadian for an interview. Watch below...

Polica @ Hotel Vegan

In addition to hosting almost 100 bands on three stages for four days straight, BrooklynVegan's Hotel Vegan, located at Austin venues Hotel Vegas & Volstead Lounge, was a place where you could sip some complimentary HobNob Wines from noon-7pm each day. On Friday (3/16/2012), the third day of Hotel Vegan, we teamed with HobNob and The Original Moonshine for a big party that included the following, amazing FREE lineup:
Stage 1 (Hotel Vegas Outside)It was a very good day. Bill wrote about some of the bands who played on Friday including Nardwuar's band The Evaporators who definitely put on one of the day & week's most memorable performance for those who caught it. As Bill wrote, "At one point, one group of people were holding him up while another group were holding his organ (hello!) while he played it... and then he soon climbed on top of it. There were costume changes, group singalongs, question and answer sessions and a lot of really fun garage punk. One of my Top 5 sets of SXSW 2012."

Wu-Tang Clan recently played a few NYC-area dates including Best Buy Theater on Sunday (12/18). No Raekwon & Ghostface unfortunately, but Method Man, RZA, Masta Killa and others from the crew were in the house. Here are some pictures and videos from that show
In related news, Wu-Tang Clan revealed via facebook that Method Man is working on his "last album produced by the RZA." As HipHopDX points out, it's not clear whether they mean that it's going to be Method Man's last album or the last album that RZA produces for him.
