Nazxul at Public Assembly
Aussie black metallers Nazxul are currently making the long trek back to their homeland after a reported triumphant set at Maryland Deathfest, and a pit stop in NYC for a show at Public Assembly on June 1st. I'm particular about my keyboards in black metal and Nazxul know how to tastefully integrate the instrument, adding layers of atmosphere and touches of (anti)melody to their stormcloud songwriting. Furthermore, the keyboard touches were not as prevalent as they are on their recorded output. The band played a rousing set that pulled from both their classic 90s burner Totem and their recent release on Moribund, Iconoclast. A picture of their setlist is below.
Direct support came from the killer war-metal trio Witch Tomb who, despite playing in shroud, ripped the crowd with a killer set of high-octane and even higher violence blackened fury.
Mutilation Rites opened the show and though I missed them, I'll be in attendance when the band plays Union Pool alongside The Funeral Pyre (who released their new LP on Prosthetic this week) and Early Graves (who have a certified banger on their hands with Goner).

The Funeral Pyre at SXSW (more here)
With their new LP Vultures At Dawn due on June 8th via Prosthetic Records, blackened death-dealers The Funeral Pyre will hit the road with the crushing hardcore combo Early Graves for a string of dates that will include a BV/1000 Knives show at Union Pool on 7/17 with upstart black-metal killers Mutilation Rites.
Meanwhile, Mutilation Rites has a few other dates on their calendar including June 1st at Public Assembly when the band will team up with Australian BM badasses Nazxul (who are playing MDF this weekend) and New England's Witch Tomb. The show kicks off at 8PM and $15 gets you in.
June 20th will see Mutilation Rites at Europa with a killer bill of bands including At War, Midnight (who are playing the the Punk Island Festival that day), Deathrash, Crucifist (also playing Punk Island), and Mutant Supremacy. Tickets are on sale.
Both Mutilation Rites and Mutant Supremacy played Party Expo on 5/25 with Cannabis Corpse.
Early Graves are currently streaming the title track from their forthcoming LP Goner, at their myspace. Harsh, pissed off hardcore of the 1000MPH sort, Goner impresses me more with every listen. Make sure and pick the LP up when it drops on June 22nd and get out to see the band on July 17th. Seriously badass.
Vultures at Dawn is The Funeral Pyre's fourth LP since their inception in 2003. Check out a track, "Personal Exile" streaming at Metalsucks. The band recently played SXSW, tagging both the BV/1000 Knives/Crustcake Pizza Party on 3/18 as well as the Prosthetic Showcase the night before.

DIY is the name of the game for Florida's Dark Castle, as the duo has garnered a ton of buzz on the southern metal scene as of late due to their self-released EP and incessant touring. The northeastern touring love is on the way (this summer?), but in the meantime, Dark Castle's new LP, Spirited Migration is out NOW in digital formats (iTunes, amazon) with one of those amazing tracks, "Awake In Sleep" available for download above! Nebula will illustrate truth in advertising on July 7th when the trio drops their new album, Heavy Psych. Tee Pee Records will plead guilty to releasing the follow-up to 2006's Apollo, which includes "The Dagger" downloadable above. For the unaware, Nebula features former members of Fu Manchu, Mondo Generator, and Karma To Burn (who recently played Lit).
Australia's dark kings of blackened thrash, Destroyer 666, will release their NEW album on July 14th via Season of Mist! Defiance will be D666's first release in six years and first LP in seven, and will have artwork that'll look a little somethin' like this:
Another set of Aussies, black metallers Nazxul, will release their first new material in more than ten years via Moribund! Look for more details on the new album, Iconoclast, in the months ahead as well as some US dates.
