Corrections House @ Saint Vitus, 1/21/2013 (more by Caroline Harrison)
Corrections House

Corrections House, the new supergroup comprised of Sanford Parker (producer/engineer, Nachtmystium, Minsk), Mike Williams (Eyehategod), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Bloodiest, etc.), and Scott Kelly (Neurosis, who played this past weekend), kicked off their US tour at Saint Vitus last night (1/21) which was also their first-ever show. The band was joined by opening sets from York Factory Complaint (mems Believer/Law, Veins, ex-Drunkdriver) and Theologian, and featured "solo sets of spoken word, acoustic and experimental music with an end times collaboration to close out the night."

More pictures and a review of the show are over at Invisible Oranges.

Neurosis @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple 1/19

Neurosis made a triumphant return to NYC over the weekend when they headlined a sold out show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple on Saturday (1/19), the same spot they played with Mastodon the last time they were in NYC, almost exactly five years ago. Neurosis are now without their graphic artist, so the lack of visuals may have made the room bit less ominous than it was five years ago (not to say it wasn't still totally life threatening) but the band still ripped like no other. Their 11-song, hour and a half encore-less set was bookended by two Through Silver in Blood tracks ("Eye" to open, "Locust Star" to close), and in between they focused entirely on their atmospheric, Steve Albini-produced era, relying most heavily on their two most recent albums, 2007's Given to the Rising and 2012's Honor Found in Decay.

People have varying definitions on what "heavy" music is, but if their albums don't already, it's undeniable that Neurosis' shows carry the weight of the word. They tore through boulder-crushing chords, razor-in-throat screams, and a storm-approaching atmosphere that you could feel in your bones (and eardrums). Some moshed, others headbanged in place, and others just watched in awe as the band delivered. There were some moments to breathe during the set, like the post-rock passage of "My Heart For Deliverance" and the half-sung intro of "The Tide," but moments like those are equal in intensity to the heavy sections, and are part of what keeps Neurosis so consistently interesting. They never let up during the set to talk to the crowd, and it was rarely ever silent, even while tuning their guitars. Just an onslaught of peaks and valleys that had command over the crowd throughout the entire set.

The show opened with an industrial drone set from No Fun boss Carlos Giffoni and an experimental guitar/drum/sampler duo set from James Plotkin and Tim Wyskida, who were both members of Khanate. More pictures from the show, Neurosis' setlist, and a video of them playing "At the Well" (via (((unartig)))) below...

Eyehategod at Saint Vitus, Dec 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)

As discussed, Corrections House is a supergroup of sorts, comprised of Scott Kelly (of Neurosis), Mike IX Williams (Eyehategod), Sanford Parker (producer/engineer, Nachmystium/Minsk) and Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Bloodiest, etc). The upcoming tour will feature "solo sets of spoken word, acoustic and experimental music with an end times collaboration to close out the night." What we didn't know was that recorded material was also on the way...

Corrections House have produced a video for "Hoax the System," a new track that will appear on a forthcoming 7" on War Crime Records, a collaborative effort between Parker and Lamont. The flip will feature a second track, "Grin With A Purpose," though no additional recordings have been reported. Fingers crossed.

In the meantime, swoop below for a look at the new video and all tour dates. And if you want to see it live, Corrections House hits Saint Vitus on Jan 21 (tickets).

In related news, Neurosis plays a sold-out Brooklyn Masonic Temple on Saturday, the same day as the mega-Catharsis/Deathcycle/Gehenna/Withdrawal show at The Acheron (tickets).

Video and a list of tour dates are below.

Mike of Eyehategod at Saint Vitus, Nov 2012 (more by Lukas Hodge)
Corrections House

Corrections House is a new band of the "supergroup" persuasion, featuring Scott Kelly of Neurosis, Mike IX Williams of Eyehategod, Sanford Parker of Nachtmystium, and Bruce Lamont of Yakuza/Bloodiest. Little is known about what this stellar lineup has conjured together yet, but you can look forward to a few live performances in the US soon. Those include a stop in Brooklyn at Saint Vitus on Jan 21. Tickets are on sale.

Don't forget that Neurosis also announced tour dates recently, including their first NYC appearance in five years. The band also recently added a few new ones as well, including at Union Transfer in Philadelphia on 1/20. Dates are below.

Both Eyehategod and Nachtmystium performed at St. Vitus in November, though Sanford was not on board as a member of the Chicago black metal crew this time around. If you missed it, check out pictures of Nachtmystium HERE and shots from Eyehategod HERE and HERE.

All tour dates listed below...

One Tail One Head at Inferno Festival, April 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
One Tail One Head

2012 was a year of considerable personal growth for me, as a person, a photographer and a music fan. As I recounted in my favorite photos of 2012, I got to shoot some of my favorite bands of all time and travel the globe in search of new ones. The beginning of the year was spent dealing with personal drama, and if it werent for key records in my life I shudder to think at where I would be right now. To every band on this list and many who aren't, I cant thank you enough.

First order of business, my musical pallette is much much larger than just a series of metal records. This is NOT a list of my favorite records of the year, because that would surely include other entries from across many different genres. This is, however, a list of some of my favorite heavier records.

To me, the term "heavy" can be defined in many ways, from the elongated riff on a doom record to a noise squall to a particularly punishing punk-rock beatdown. While most of the following records are "heavy" in the traditional "distortion and loud guitars" sense, a few are not. You'll see metal, you'll see deathrock, you'll see raw punk, you'll see hardcore, and many spots in between in the numbered list below. And to answer your question, yes you'll see Swans... right beside D-Clone and Asphyx.

My favorite records of 2012 are below. Hopefully you'll see a connection in favorites or maybe discover something new. Regardless, I hope you found your own favorites of the year whether in this list or outside of it.

Neurosis at Fox Theater in Oakland, November 2012 (more by Taylor Keahey)

At long last, Neurosis have announced their return to NYC! The Bay-Area crew will be back to haunt to the grounds of their last NYC performance, playing Brooklyn Masonic Temple on January 19. Tickets are on sale. The show is almost exactly five years (a week shy actually) from when the band headlined the same spot over two nights with supporting band Mastodon.

Neurosis, who recently slimmed down their lineup somewhat, released Honor Found in Decay earlier this year, celebrating with a release party with Voivod and Yob (pics). Stream all of that below alongside all tour dates.

Voivod at Fox Theater, Nov 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)

There's a reason why Neurosis hand-picked progressive thrash gods Voivod to play their album-release party. Thirty years in, these Canadian legends are still cranking out vital and ripping tracks, with the latest surfacing on their new album, Target Earth which hits January 21 via Century Media Records. We are proud to stream the first, second and fourth tracks from the LP below. Check out "Target Earth," "Mechanical Mind" and "Kluskap O Kom," the latter of which makes its first appearance here.

Belgian atmospheric sludge crew Amenra are currently streaming their slow-burning Mass V in full. Pensive, dark, yet burning brightly like a flame to magnesium, check out the record in its entirety below.

Amenra recently added a London show with Cult of Luna (who have a new album coming) on January 22nd. Still no word on an NYC date, but we'll let you know if that changes. All other dates and the album stream are below.

Voivod at Fox Theater, Nov 2012 (more by Taylor Keahey)
Voivod has been trickling out new tracks from their forthcoming LP Target Earth, which is due on January 21, 2013. First the band dropped "Mechanical Mind" in Youtube form and now comes the release of the title track which first saw the light of day via MetalSucks. Check out both tracks below.

Voivod was handpicked to support Neurosis at their recent album release show in Oakland (pics here). So far no additional announcements from the band regarding an NYC show, BUT additional shows are popping up all around the country including dates in Atlanta, Seattle and Los Angeles. Current tour dates are below... I'd suspect that an NYC show announcement is right around the corner.

In related Neurosis news, the band has announced the departure of visual artist (and A Storm of Light honcho) Josh Graham. Though Graham has never committed a single note to the band during his tenure, he has helped shape the band's visual aesthetic via live projections, art, merchandise, etc. Statements from Graham and the band regarding his departure are below alongside a list of all tour dates.

Al Cisneros with Om at Bowery Ballroom, Nov 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)

Sleep is honored to perform at Maryland Deathfest 2013.

Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep), Matt Pike (High On Fire, Sleep) and Jason Roeder (Neurosis, Sleep) have been carefully balancing busy touring schedules to push forward with Sleep as a full, reunited band...

We look forward to MDF and beyond.

Praise thee who accept The Iommic in thine heart

- Sleep"

Good news, which hopefully also means the return of Sleep for recorded material as well. Wow. More details on the way including, hopefully, tour dates outside of their appearance at 35 Denton and at MDF.

Current Sleep bandmates have been busy with their other projects as of late. Jason Roeder just celebrated the release of the new Neurosis LP in Oakland (pics). Matt Pike is currently on tour with High on Fire, and will play two NYC shows this weekend. And last but not least, Al Cisneros played with Om at Bowery Ballroom on 11/21 (pics) and will return to join Johnny Marr (who has a new solo album coming) and Kim Gordon at Terminal 5 on 12/1 for Dinosaur Jr's celebration of You're Living All Over Me. Tickets are still available.

Dinosaur Jr recently added a grip of European dates to their current slate of shows. Check out those dates alongside a stream of the new live album recorded in 1987 titled Chocomel Daze (out now on Merge).

Guy Fieri, Smashmouth frontman Steve Harwell and Sammy Hagar are teaming for what is likely to be the most exclamation-point-filled cookbook of all time. Also, maybe the worst.

Those of a certain age may have fond, fuzzy memories of MTV's sock puppet hosts Sifl & Olly. Well they're back! Reviewing video games? Sort of. Check out a video below.

Speaking of fond MTV memories, you can catch Kurt Loder in the flesh at at the Bell House in Brooklyn tonight (9/20) (with Julie Klausner who has other upcoming gigs too).

Bruce Springsteen plays again in NJ tonight tomorrow. Meanwhile check out his setlist from last night.

Fiona Apple got busted for hash possession at the same Texas checkpoint that got Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson. She's out on bail, but tonight's ACL Live show is canceled (which means no pictures tonight on the BVAustin Instagram).

Speaking of Austin, Ume is funding a new record via Kickstarter.

Speaking of Kickstarter, Gawker discusses their accountability problem, Amanda Palmer included.

That said, we're sure Owen Pallett, like many others, was happy to hear that Amanda is now paying all musicians.

Meanwhile, if you're looking for backers for your Kickstarter, Forbes listed the 400 richest Americans, Oprah Winfrey, David Geffen, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas included.

Speaking of money, Iggy Pop, Wayne Coyne, Ben Folds, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney and more will appear as guests on Ke$ha's new album, Warrior.

Speaking of Patrick Carney, congrats to him and his now-wife Emily Ward on their recent wedding. Will Forte officiated. Shaun White was arrested.
