Amenra with Billy Anderson and Scott Kelly
Amenra

Ethereal hardcore/sludge band Amenra touches on black metal, gothic folk and post-rock in the most organic of ways. Exhibit A comes in the form of their new video for "Nowena I 9.10," featuring the always-searing vocals of Scott Kelly of Neurosis and production from the great Billy Anderson. Check out the clip, as well as a few other videos below. Don't forget, their forthcoming Mass V will be out via Neurot on November 27. Europe can preorder theirs via the band, while US fans can get theirs via Neurot.

Meanwhile, Neurosis celebrates the release of their new LP Honor Found in Decay in their native Oakland this weekend with Voivod and YOB.

Amenra

Belgian favorites Amenra have loose ties to bands like Oathbreaker, Integrity, Rise & Fall and others, and use elements from those bands along with Acme, Neurosis, and post-rock in their unique approach to post-hardcore/sludge. After a few mostly-European releases, the band is welcoming their new LP Mass V, which will be their debut LP for Neurot Recordings. The long-player, recorded by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Eyehategod, Swans), will hit via the label on November 27. Stream the first song from that LP, "Dearborn and Buried," below.

So far no, US dates have been scheduled for Amenra, but those in the EU can catch them at the dates below.

Guy Fieri, Smashmouth frontman Steve Harwell and Sammy Hagar are teaming for what is likely to be the most exclamation-point-filled cookbook of all time. Also, maybe the worst.

Those of a certain age may have fond, fuzzy memories of MTV's sock puppet hosts Sifl & Olly. Well they're back! Reviewing video games? Sort of. Check out a video below.

Speaking of fond MTV memories, you can catch Kurt Loder in the flesh at at the Bell House in Brooklyn tonight (9/20) (with Julie Klausner who has other upcoming gigs too).

Bruce Springsteen plays again in NJ tonight tomorrow. Meanwhile check out his setlist from last night.

Fiona Apple got busted for hash possession at the same Texas checkpoint that got Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson. She's out on bail, but tonight's ACL Live show is canceled (which means no pictures tonight on the BVAustin Instagram).

Speaking of Austin, Ume is funding a new record via Kickstarter.

Speaking of Kickstarter, Gawker discusses their accountability problem, Amanda Palmer included.

That said, we're sure Owen Pallett, like many others, was happy to hear that Amanda is now paying all musicians.

Meanwhile, if you're looking for backers for your Kickstarter, Forbes listed the 400 richest Americans, Oprah Winfrey, David Geffen, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas included.

Speaking of money, Iggy Pop, Wayne Coyne, Ben Folds, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney and more will appear as guests on Ke$ha's new album, Warrior.

Speaking of Patrick Carney, congrats to him and his now-wife Emily Ward on their recent wedding. Will Forte officiated. Shaun White was arrested.

The first track from Neurosis's new LP Honor Found in Decay has slipped out. Stream "At The Well" at NPR now.

The Vaselines were joined by Krist Novoselic at Bumbershoot in Seattle over Labor Day Weekend, where they joined together for "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam." The song was originally recorded by the band and then later covered for Nirvana's MTV Unplugged LP.

Neurosis at Maryland Deathfest 2011 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Neurosis

Two major metal heavyweights will release what will arguably be the most anticipated releases of the year this fall! First up is Oakland's own Neurosis, who are readying their new LP Honor Found In Decay for release via their own Neurot imprint on October 30 in the US. The release is the band's 11th record overall, and first since Given To The Rising released more than five years ago. The band has released a series of teasers in the recent weeks, all of which you can view below.

Another hotly anticipated record due this fall will come from the mighty Pig Destroyer, who's 19-track LP Book Burner will hit via Relapse Records one week before Neurosis (on 10/23). Head below for the album art and an in-studio episode.

So far no US dates have been scheduled for either band, but with these releases on the way I am sure that will change very soon. Videos and art is below.

Steve Von Till with Neurosis at Maryland Deathfest 2011 (more by BBG)
Steve Von Till

As discussed previously, three titans of metal have combined forces for the unlikely cause of a tribute album. Wino (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, many more), Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till (both of Neurosis) all tackle Songs of Townes Van Zandt, a collection of covers available via Neurot Recordings now. Stream Scott Kelly's rendition of "St. John, the Gambler" as well as Steve Von Till's "Black Crow Blues" below, the latter of which is making its first public appearance here.

In related news, Wino & Conny Ochs released their Heavy Kingdom LP earlier this year (stream it) and the pair will hit the road in the US for a string of dates. Look for the pair to hit Saint Vitus on August 22nd, tickets are on sale.

A listing of all Wino/Conny Ochs dates are below, along with streams and the Songs of Townes Van Zandt tracklisting.

Art for Songs of Townes Van Zandt
Townes Van Zandt

After having performed material by Townes Van Zandt solo and through various collaborations on stage over recent years, on solo releases and on random live collaborations, the aptly entitled Songs of Townes Van Zandt brings several songs each from Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till and Scott "Wino" Weinrich together in praise of his deep musical influence on them all. Through a personal contact of the artists, newly-formed label My Proud Mountain was founded specially in order to release this tribute, with Neurot Recordings handling the North American release of the album on June 12th.
These three titans of metal will combine for three songs each on the release, so fans of Scott Kelly, Wino, Steve Von Till, and Townes Van Zandt should keep an eye out for the record. Stream Scott Kelly's cover of "St. John, The Gambler" below.

In related news, Neurosis, which contains Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till, have completed mixing their new album (!) in Chicago. Still no word on album title or release, but its expected to (finally) be released by the end of the year. Stoked. The band also recently reissued the Sovereign EP.

In other Wino news, the Saint Vitus frontman will team with Conny Ochs to play all of his recently released Heavy Kingdom LP at Roadburn this week. Saint Vitus are preparing to release their new LP Lillie: F- 65 via Season of Mist, and have released a new video for "Let Them Fall" Check that out alongside the stream for "St. John, The Gambler" and some Scott Kelly tour dates, below...

Sleep at Terminal 5 (more by BBG)
Dopesmoker

As many know, the history of Sleep's Dopesmoker is almost as fascinating as the seminal release itself. A few different versions have been released, but now it seems that Southern Lord will release the ORIGINAL version of Sleep's epic album, done the way the band intended for release in the mid 90s:

For the 2012 reissue, there are some very notable changes. The original studio tapes have been remastered presenting the album as the band had originally intended. The audio is clearer, louder, and at last brings a true representation of SLEEP's hour-plus Weedian chronicle. Exclusive to this Southern Lord edition is brand new artwork by long time SLEEP artist Arik Roper, to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Additionally, this reborn version of Dopesmoker boasts an unreleased live recording of one of the band's best all-time performances: "Holy Mountain" from San Francisco's I-Beam in 1994.
No word on when the release will actually surface but break out the bong, it'll probably be worth a listen. All Sleep tour dates and a stream of the Tee Pee edition of Dopesmoker are below.

Reminder: we are teaming with Southern Lord for TWO shows in Austin this week, both a day party as part of the Deathmatch (with Matt Pike's current project High on Fire) and an official showcase.

Eugene Robinson at Europa (more by BBG)
Oxbow

Scott Kelly (Neurosis) is currently touring the West Coast, but will make his way East for a string of dates with the great Eugene Robinson (Oxbow) that will include a stop at Knitting Factory on March 4th. Tickets go on sale at 10AM on 12/10 (Saturday).

In related news, Relapse Records will reissue Neurosis' classic Souls At Zero and Enemy Of The Sun LPs on 180 2LP sets (color and black). Pre-order yours.

Speaking of the amazing Eugene Robinson, his band Oxbow will be the subject of a new crowd-sourced documentary (they have met their goal, but donations close 12/16 if you still want to give). In addition, we asked Eugene Robinson to discuss some of his favorite things in 2011. His response? Top 10 Revenge Themes for 2011. Leviathan's True Traitor True Whore
Leviathan

Leviathan's True Traitor True Whore was hands down my most anticipated release of this year, especially considering my reverence for his last LP Massive Conspiracy Against All Life. True Traitor True Whore is Jef Whitehead's personal statement toward the recent charges brought upon him, according to his interview in Pitchfork, and it is also one of his most daring and overtly "rock" leaning records yet. TTTW is one of my favorite sort of records, opening itself up more and more with repeated listening, and is definitely another notch in his already storied career as an outsider artist. Stream three Leviathan tracks below, which previously posted at Pitchfork (x2) and Invisible Oranges, and get your copy via Profound Lore.

The same night that Torche and Part Chimp attack Mercury Lounge (11/9), Exhumed will team with Goatwhore and Havok to play Europa. Tickets are still available to both Europa and Merc, but I have a pair of tickets available for giveaway for the Europa show. Head below for more details on how you can win. The Torche/Part Chimp split, which we previewed recently, is currently streaming in full at Spin.

Concussion will hit Public Assembly on 11/10 with Worms In Women And Cattle (Pippi Zornoza from the live incarnation of Wold), Syphilitic Lust, and Sannhet.

And last but not least, The Ocean have added a show at Saint Vitus on 11/8 with Family, Alekhine's Gun, and The Binary Code. All US dates and some in their home base of the EU, are below.

More details on how to win those Exhumed tickets, an incredible Neurosis video and more suggested NYC shows are below.

Neurosis / The Antlers
MusicFest NW
MusicFest NW

Typhoon played a great set with thirteen people on stage, a friend notes that every time she sees the band there's someone else in it. After their set, lead singer Kyle Morton goes and sits with his family in the crowd after and obliges a female fan who asks to take a picture with him...

The incredibly good-looking boys in Antlers are nearly as sedate as the comatose crowd filling the square. Good thing the crowd is almost as incredibly good-looking as the boys in Antlers. I am distracting myself with untoward thoughts until something interesting happens...

Here's the thing I don't get about Explosions in the Sky: There's really no reason for them to be an instrumental band. Their music isn't evocative enough to NOT require a singer. All the dudes are currently rocking out in great disproportion to the actual rock-out quality of the music. We head to Virginia Cafe. Uh oh...

It's been four years since Neurosis last played Portland. For the full house at Roseland tonight, this is like going to church....

I don't get easily overwhelmed at concerts, but I don't know how much more of Neurosis I can handle. Standing by the PA speakers, my puny earplugs aren't standing much of a chance. And damn if they don't look possessed up there on stage. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed but am so tired that it's starting to scare me a little bit. - [Williamette Week]

Day four of MusicFestNW was, for some, a day of high drama and emotion. Any time you put the swelling post-rock of Explosions In The Sky, the tense and powerful Neurosis, the shimmering beauty of The Antlers, and psychedelic soundtracking of Grails and Eluvium in one place, there's bound to be some epic moments (even if they're not all appreciated).

MFNW Day 3 pics HERE. Day 2 HERE and HERE. Day 1 HERE.

Primate at Scion Rock Fest 2011 (more by Adam Murray)
Primate

Mastodon have released another video from their upcoming LP The Hunter (due on September 27th). The new video, for "Spectrelight", features Scott Kelly from Neurosis, and follows recent video releases of "Curl of The Burl" and "Black Tongue". All of them are viewable below.

So far no word on a US tour from the Atlanta four-piece, though knowing them a massive one will surely follow. The band has only one current tour date scheduled, 10/26 at the Verizon Theatre in Dallas, TX with Soundgarden. Neurosis, also with just one upcoming date, play this weekend in Portland as part of MusicFestNW. Their show is at Roseland Theater on Saturday with Grails, YOB and Akimbo. Tickets are still available for those without festival passes. The entire MusicFestNW begins Wednesday. Check out the schedule HERE.

In other news, Relapse recently signed Primate, a band featuring Bill Kelliher of Mastodon, Kevin Sharp of Brutal Truth, and Mike Brennan of Javelina among others. No word on when they will follow-up on their Draw Back A Stump EP from earliser this year, but we'll keep you up to date. In the meantime, Brutal Truth are releasing a new LP via Relapse; look for End Time on 9/27. Stream two new songs at their Facebook.

All tour dates and that new video is below.

Neurosis
Maryland Death Fest

After a day of heavy music that culminated in the last US set from Cathedral, the second day of Maryland Deathfest was marked by sets from Neurosis, Aura Noir, Corrosion of Conformity, Funebrarum, Marduk, Exhumed, Kylesa, Machetazo, Cripple Bastards, Pulling Teeth, Nocturnal, The Impalers & Nails. Save for the latter two (and COC), I was able to catch all of them... with my favorite sets of the day going to Neurosis, Cripple Bastards, Funebrarum, and Exhumed.

Neurosis's set touched on songs from their latest Given To The Rising and reached back as far as Souls at Zero for "The Web". The band closed with "Through Silver In Blood" which, considering I had met the album's producer Billy Anderson earlier in the day, had a special meaning and power on top of the band's already considerable weight. Favorites like "Locust Star" and "A Sun That Never Sets" also made an appearance during the band's incredible set. The full setlist is listed below. A picture of Exhumed's is down there too.

Marduk
Maryland Death Fest

Marduk, Aura Noir, Black Anvil, and Panzerfaust are on a tour that hits Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 3rd. Tickets are still available. Their full list of dates is below.

Tombs and A Storm of Light

Save the date, June 9th at The Studio at Webster Hall! BrooklynVegan is proud to announce a DOUBLE record release party featuring Tombs and A Storm of Light, as well as special guest Panzerbastard and one more TBA. Tickets are on sale for the NYC show which is the kick-off of a short tour for the two bands. All dates are listed below.

Tombs is welcoming their new LP Path to Totality, the follow-up to their uber-triumphant Winter Hours due on June 7th via Relapse Records. The new LP was recorded at Elmwood Recording studios in Dallas, TX with John Congleton, a man responsible for works by artists ranging from Baroness to St. Vincent to Explosions In The Sky. Interestingly enough, Path of Totality also features the first recorded appearance of "new" drummer Andrew Hernandez, though the former ASRA pummeller has actually been on board with the band since Winter Hours was released. Check out the 6th track on the LP, "Vermillion", available for download above and streaming below and a second track "Silent World" at NPR. Preorder Path To Totality at Relapse.

A Storm of Light's new LP As The Valley of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade is due a bit sooner, on May 17th via Profound Lore (North America/UK)/Burning World (EU). The album boasts guest shouts from names like Kim Thayil (of Soundgarden), Jarboe, long time collaborator Nerissa Campbell, and Kris Force (Amber Asylum) over its nine tracks, and features new drummer BJ Graves behind the kit. The new LP is decidedly more "metal", as Storm is clearly moving away from their previous post-rock heavy output and ever-closer toward the riff. Stream three tracks from the As The Valley below: "Missing" with Kim Thayil and Nerissa Campbell, "Collapse" with Jarboe, and "Black Wolves" with Kim Thayil and Nerissa Campbell (which makes its premiere in this post). Download "Collapse" and "Black Wolves" above.

Since its been a while since we caught up with Josh Graham, we threw him a few questions about the A Storm of Light record, his new drummer, and the current status of the new Neurosis LP. The results of that conversation are below alongside all streams and tour dates...

2 of these men will share a stage in the New Year (more)
Shrinebuilder

Before you really do the math, the idea is staggering: one member of Neurosis, one member of Saint Vitus, half of Shrinebuilder, one member of The Hidden Hand, and one member of Place of Skulls will all bless one stage. Of course the above lineup is really just projects associated with two men, Scott Kelly & Scott "Wino" Weinrich, and they will hit the road for a string of acoustic dates in the new year including Mercury Lounge in NYC on February 10th with Man's Gin. Tickets go on AMEX presale on Wednesday, 12/8 at noon, with regular sale hitting at noon on Friday.

Besides these acoustic-only dates, Wino has only one show on his calendar and that's with Scott Kelly at Roadburn 2011 as part of Shrinebulder. Scott Kelly has plenty of other dates though, as Neurosis will play shows on the West Coast around the New Year and are also scheduled to play Maryland Deathfest 2011. All tour dates are below.

Neurosis played ATP's The Nightmare before Christmas over the weekend along with the reunited Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It was Godspeed's first reunion show and it went on despite concerns about the weather. NYC has to wait until March, but we get five shows. Updated dates below.

Video from ATP (of both bands) and all tour dates below.

Every spring, every metalhead asks every other metalhead the same question:

"Are you going to Maryland Deathfest?"

For some, the answer to that question is about to get a little bit easier. Neurosis will headline one night of the 2011 festival alongside a killer, and previously announced lineup of Cripple Bastards, the recently reunited Exhumed, Exhorder, Hooded Menace, Machetazo, Impaled Nazarene, and many more. The show is one of only two confirmed Neurosis dates currently scheduled, with the second being the previously discussed Godspeed You Black Emperor-curated ATP show in Minehead.

Nightbringer is also confirmed to play MDF 2011, and the Colorado band (who recently dropped a four-way split and Apocalypse Sun on Ajna) is also scheduled to appear at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ on September 4th alongside Profanatica, Krieg, and Wehwalt.

Neurosis are releasing two albums on August 30th in celebration of the band's 25th anniversary: Live At Roadburn 2007 and a reissued and redesigned Enemy Of The Sun with new artwork by Josh Graham (whose band A Storm of Light is opening one of the TWO Sleep shows happening at Masonic Temple in Brooklyn). Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder is also part of Sleep's new live lineup.

MDF 2011 takes place from May 27th to the 30th at Sonar in Baltimore. Full MDF lineup, Neurosis live album art and tracklist, updated Sleep tour dates, and some video below....

Owl City fans (by Chris Lynch)
Owl City

Absolute Punk: I also read online that when you are a fan of Botch, that seems a little different especially for the music that you make. What kind of role do you feel a heavy band like them play on your music? Do you think you will ever try out heavier music or are you going to stick to the softer stuff for now?

Adam "Owl City" Young: I used to play drums in a heavy band called Isle, largely influence by stuff like Botch, Pelican, Neurosis, Isis. Even though bands like that are generally on the opposite side of the spectrum from the music I put out, I think the thing that inspires me still comes though -- the idea of becoming completely lost in the sound. The idea that imagery can be merely suggestive but not so subjective as to tell you how or what to think. It's far more about what the music says to you rather than somebody telling you how to feel. That's really interesting to me...

...Absolute Punk: You also have listed Mogwai as a musical influence, which shows that you are into a wide array of musical tastes. Do you feel like people overlook that based on your music output?

Adam "Owl City" Young: It's funny how a lot of people might assume a given artist only listens to the kind of music he/she creates. That certainly may be the case for some, but for me, it's nearly the opposite. I have a hard time truly enjoying anything I hear on pop radio, or even pop music in general. It's always been tough for me to draw any kind of inspiration from "conventional" music so to speak. Blame it on the stuff I listened to in high school, but for some reason bands like Mogwai or Rachel's or Telefon Tel Aviv are just way more interesting. They payoff is greater. Their songs hold a mystique that three and a half minute radio singles, in my opinion, often tend to lack. Therein was an exciting challenge when I began creating music for Owl City. It was pop music. I'd never made pop music before, I didn't even listen to it, but I wanted to create it because it was new.

Absolute Punk: You also have a tour coming up with Maroon 5 in about a week, and then John Mayer after that. How excited are you for that?

Adam "Owl City" Young: It'll be new territory and I'm excited to see how touring works at that level. I don't know much about either band but I'm looking forward to the tour to say the least.

In related news, Mogwai live DVD will screen in the venue where it was filmed (and other places)

Back to bludgeon.... it's This Week in Metal! This week, we kick things off with a death metal record that is currently in high rotation, Ulcerate's searing new LP Everything is Fire. Out NOW via Willowtip, check out a pair of MP3s from that LP available above. This New Zealand band are able to hit that seemingly impossible sweet-spot where brutality meets technicality and melody meets dissonance. Highly recco'd!

summonBloody Panda is back a new LP due on Profound Lore, Summon. Due August 11, the band will release a CD/DVD for Summon which will include seven tracks, one of which ("Miserere", an excerpt above) is interpreted visually on DVD. Yoshiko Ohara, their signature vocalist and a known visual artist, is responsible for the cover art. The DVD was shot, in Brooklyn and Indonesia, and edited by band members Bryan Camphire, Blake McDowell, and Josh Rothenberger. Josh also told us that...

the whole DVD project came about through our collaboration with Cave dance studio on Grand St. in Williamsburg. It was there that we met Berlin-based Butoh dancer Yuko Kaseki a few years ago. We Asked her to dance to one of our tunes last year, and then shot most of the DVD at Cave with her last August/Septemeber.
More details to come. Bloody Panda hits the road on July 21st, full tour dates are forthcoming!

Fresh off of a triumphant set at Maryland Deathfest, Asphyx is back and will domestically release their new album, Death...The Brutal Way via Ibex Moon. Due September 1st, the record will also be released in a limited edition version with a live DVD, Live at Party.San Open Air Festival 2007. Asphyx recently welcomed Martin van Drunen (Pestilence, Hail of Bullets, Bolt Thrower) back into the fold after his departure 17 years ago.

Black September, who first came onto my radar via their work with Thou and Winters In Osaka, has a new 7" out NOW, The Sermon of Vengeance. Mastered at The Boiler Room by Collin Jordan (Nachtmystium, Minsk), check out "Purification", one of two new tracks by the black metal punks from The Sermon of Vengeance above and order that 7", as well as other releases here.

Pelican's new EP, the tour only CD Ephemeral, is out on 12" at Southern Lord packaged with a Seldon Hunt designed tee. In addition, Earth's previously rare Radio/Live LP is available via Southern Lord as well.

Filth-ridden hardcore is the order of business for Syracuse's Oak & Bone, a badge the band wears with pride on their debut 7" out NOW via Hex Records (one time home to Ed Gein, Engineer, Playing Enemy, and Cursed). Check out "Build Walls" from that 7" above. The crew recently played NYC with another fave of mine, crusty black-metal punks Infernal Stronghold, and are prepping to release a split 7" with Like Wolves on Barbarossa Records. Pick up their debut 7" and look for that split!

Anaal Nathrakh's Mick Kenney is back with his former bandmates in Mistress to resurrect Fukpig, who released their last LP Nuclear Apocalypse in 2003. Pick up Spewings From A Selfish Nation before it's gone (100 copies total!). Anaal Nathrakh's In The Constellation Of The Black Widow is out June 26th via Candellight. Preorder the vinyl at Mick/Shane Embury's FETO records.

A preview of that Fukpig, as well as news on Down touring with Melvins(!!!) Jucifer, Celeste, Mastodon, Clutch, and much more below...
