YOB at the Bell House, 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
YOB

As we've said before, Oregonian psych-doom unit YOB may be the best slow-and-heavy band around today. Among their many accomplishments is the role they've played in the ascent of Profound Lore Records, which has become one of metal's premiere taste-making labels over the past decade. YOB signed to PFL after their brief mid-aughts hiatus for the release of The Great Cessation in 2009, and recently re-released their second album Catharsis through the label.

It thus comes as something of a surprise to hear that YOB have moved on to a different label. Specifically, they've signed on with Neurot Recordings, which is the in-house label for Neurosis (the other best slow-and-heavy band around today). The musicians involved have crossed paths before, having played shows together both under the YOB/Neurosis monikers as well as in solo or side-project formats. (More on that in a sec.) Comments Neurosis guitarist/vocalist Steve Von Till on the signing:

"This was meant to be. Neurot has always sought out to work with those who share in the purification of spirit through sound and who harvest their sound from originality and intensity. When I listen to YOB, see them leave it all on the stage, or share a conversation with them about life, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that they embody what Neurot stands for completely and we are so very honored that we get the opportunity to work together with them on their next album."
The signing announcement also comes with some welcome news: YOB will release their seventh album later this year. Frontman Mike Scheidt has been quite busy with side projects lately, including both solo touring and the supergroups Vhol & Lumbar, so it's good to hear that the gears are turning in his main band too.

Speaking of Scheidt's solo material: he is one of the participants in the second edition of an ongoing series of Townes Van Zandt tribute LPs. (Neurosis dudes Von Till and Scott Kelly contributed to the first edition -- another connection between them and YOB.) Scheidt will perform "To Live is to Fly," "The Rake," and "Highway Kind"; John Baizley (Baroness), Nate Hall (U.S. Christmas), Stevie Floyd (Dark Castle), Dorthia Cottrell (Windhand), and Katie Jones are also on board. Neurot will handle that release as well.

Check out a Baizley/Jones duet rendition of the TVZ classic "If I Needed You" below...

Amenra

Belgian favorites Amenra have loose ties to bands like Oathbreaker, Integrity, Rise & Fall and others, and use elements from those bands along with Acme, Neurosis, and post-rock in their unique approach to post-hardcore/sludge. After a few mostly-European releases, the band is welcoming their new LP Mass V, which will be their debut LP for Neurot Recordings. The long-player, recorded by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Eyehategod, Swans), will hit via the label on November 27. Stream the first song from that LP, "Dearborn and Buried," below.

So far no, US dates have been scheduled for Amenra, but those in the EU can catch them at the dates below.

"So I have to be guarded in a way and kinda prepare myself for what's gonna happen, because when it happens, I don't even know."

Scott Kelly

From their crust punk origins of more than twenty years ago, Scott Kelly and Neurosis have forged their own path with searing imperial riffery and singular artistic vision. Over the course of nine LPs including 2007's critically acclaimed Given To The Rising, Neurosis's firebrand mix of hardcore, metal, psychedelia, and all-of-the-above has inspired fans and musicians alike, giving way to sub-genres and sub-sub-genres based on their compelling, emotive songwriting.

Outside of Neurosis, Scott Kelly has took on additional projects like Blood & Time, Tribes of Neurot, solo recordings, his online radio station Combat Music Radio, and Neurot Recordings. In addition, Kelly announced his involvement in Shrinebuilder, an underground metal supergroup featuring Scott "Wino" Weinrich, Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep), and Dale Crover (Melvins).

With Roadburn 2009 going down this weekend in Tilburg and Neurosis on board to curate Beyond The Pale, we sat down with Scott Kelly in March to discuss Neurosis, the making of Shrinebuilder's debut LP, and why children's mobiles should come installed with music box versions of Lunar Womb!

====

Where are you exactly in the process as far as Shrinebuilder is concerned? I know you provided recent updates on your blog, but since then, how's it coming along?

We are basically in the same spot we were... Not finished mixing yet, artwork's not done yet, but getting closer on both. Wino ended up doing an extra day of guitar in Baltimore about ten days after he did the initial recording and Dale's done a little bit of percussion overdubs and we've been kinda dialing in each song a little at a time. Its actually really close to a final mix. Al is recording the new Om album in Chicago, so when he gets done he'll be in there with those guys. I'd expect to have it all mixed probably within a couple weeks... it's really close.

Neurosis LIVE @ Fury Fest
Neurosis

Neurot Recordings have confirmed that Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till are working on new Neurosis material, the follow-up to 2007's mammoth Given To The Rising! No word on when that material will surface, but with a little luck, maybe we'll see it in Neurot's 10th anniversary year (2009).

Neurot have also announced plans for In a Dark Tongue by Harvestman (aka Steve Von Till), a new Skullflower (due in March or April), as well as a new record by The Chord featuring members of Pelican.

The Chord currently have a single date laid out in their native Chi-town, at the Empty Bottle on 1/27 with A Tundra and Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) & Michael Zerang (tix here).

In addition, Neurot dropped a wee bit of Shrinebuilder news....

The band will be in the studio with Toshi [Kasai, Big Business] from January 9th through January 11th. Shrinebuilder's debut full-length, currently self-titled, is set for a summer 2009 release on Neurot Recordings.

Scott Kelly has announced that he will report live from the studio via [his blog] beginning no later than Saturday, January 10th. Look for guest blogs by other members of Shrinebuilder as well as possible in-studio photos from the band.

Wino added:
Yesterday we visited the gear catacomb where we exhumed some vintage gear for the recording including: Two seventies silver{gray} label Sunn model T's (which I immediately set upon replacing the existing preamp tubes with secret ones), a vintage Matamp, an Orange OD IOO, Roland space echo, various cabinets etc.
In case we haven't beat it into your skull already over the past year, Shrinebuilder is Wino (St. Vitus, Hidden Hand, The Obsessed), Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep), and Dale Crover (Melvins).

Al Cisneros of Om/Shrinebuilder sat down for an interview with us during ATP and after Sleep announced their reformation.

Wino has a new record due next week entitled Punctuated Equilibrium.

Neurosis, Skullflower, Om, Harvestman, and a ridiculous amount of others will soon descend upon the sold-out Roadburn.

Neurosis, A Storm of Light, and many, many others will also be at the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta on February 28th.

Scott Kelly, Live @ Roadburn

Neurosis's frontmen, Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till, both have new solo records on deck which have had their release dates pushed back to May 20th (The Wake and A Grave Is A Grim Horse respectively). As a consolation, Neurot dropped a little preview for us in the form of the MP3s above.

Scott Kelly is currently working on the new Blood & Time record, as well as Shrinebuilder with Wino (St. Vitus, Hidden Hand, etc), Dale Crover (Melvins), and Al Cisneros (who has a new drummer in Om) which is due in 2009 on Neurot. Combat Music Radio is also still going strong. Steve Von Till is working on a Limited Edition release of his Harvestman soundtrack to the film "Hate2O". Both are writing new music for Neurosis and Tribes of Neurot.

VBS.tv recently released video from the Neurosis show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple, and although it is nowhere near the majesty of their live show, check out Neurosis battling their way through "The Doorway"...

NeurosisClear your schedules, and line up an appointment with a masseuse on Jan 26th. Your neck is gonna be hurtin'.

Neurosis is back! The kings of underground heavy-tribal-space-crust-doom will return to NYC with a pair of shows at the 100-year-old Brooklyn Masonic Temple on January 24th & 25th. Tickets are already on sale.....

San Fran's finest will be supported by Neurot Recordings labelmates US Christmas & A Storm Of Light, and according to Metalsucks.net (who found the info @ crustcake), an unnamed "more famous" metal band from Atlanta who they declare to be none other than Mastodon!

Mastodon (along with Isis, Baroness, Converge, High On Fire, and many many many others) count Neurosis as one of the most important bands to the formation of their sound. Troy Sanders (bass) has said that Neurosis's "Times Of Grace" is the most influential album to the Mastodon sound. Their only other show is New Years Eve in San Francisco @ Great American Music Hall w/ Earth (paid admission guarantees a limited ed show only Tribes of Neurot / Earth 7")

"In other Neurosis-related news, guitarist Scott Kelly is working on a doom side project called Shrinebuilder with Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius of Om and the legendary Wino (The Obsessed, The Hidden Hand)." Neurosis videos below...
