"the most emotional show (@ Mercury Lounge for Active Child, Balam Acab, Superhumanoids and New Moods)" - Nicolette Elvie
Active Child at Mercury Lounge 5/11/12
Active Child brought his tour with Balam Acab and Superhumanoids to NYC earlier this month for sold out shows at Bowery Ballroom (5/10) and a day later at Mercury Lounge (5/11) with New Moods. After the Mercury Lounge show, Active Child DJ'd the Mondrian with DJ Sean Glass and DJ VIkas.
Speaking of New Moods, they've got a Northside show coming up with a pretty stacked local bill of Zambri, Ice Choir (featuring TPOBPAH's Kurt Feldman), and Fast Years at Spike Hill on June 15. Tickets for that show are on sale.

Oxford, UK band Jonquil kick off a tour at Glasslands on on Monday (4/2) with Keep Shelly in Athens in tow. Jonquil's new album, Point of Go, is out now on Dovecote records and brimming with melodic, bubbling, slightly angular pop. (A gentler Foals perhaps. They're from the same hometown.) You can stream it on Spotify and watch the video for "It's My Part" at the bottom of this post where you'll also find all tour dates.
Keep Shelly in Athens, meanwhile are releasing a combined version of their In Love with Dusk and Our Own Dreams EPs on one vinyl record that will hit stores April 13. Also worth checking out is their Campus Maritus from late last year.

New Moods @ MHOW in 2011 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
You may remember Brooklyn's New Moods from such concerts as the 2012 BV Holiday Party with Anna Calvi and Eleanor Friedberger. We've got the premiere of a new New Moods track, "So Easy," which you can download at the top of this post. (You can stream it below.) With it's fat synth bass, it crushes like a steamroller, but with a lover's touch. Is that possible? Just listen. New Moods play Glasslands on 4/2 with tourmates Jonquil & Keep Shelly in Athens, and play Mercury Lounge on May 11 (sold out) with Active Child, Balam Acab & Superhumanoids.
Stream of the New Moods track below...

You saw one set of pictures from this BrooklynVegan Holiday Party. Here's a second. More shots of Anna Calvi, Eleanor Friedberger & New Moods @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, below...

Anna Calvi @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Anna Calvi, visiting Brooklyn from the UK, headlined the BrooklynVegan Holiday Party at Music Hall of Williamsburg on 12/13. According 2 G was there and he (G) listed his ten reasons why you should always see Anna live, which you can read at his site. Anna played every song on her debut album which came out earlier this year and covered Edith Piaf and TV on the Radio. She definitely rocked the house (and played one of Bill Pearis's favorite shows of the year). One person is now wondering who is better at shredding, Anna or Annie Clark?
Thanks to all who came - $1.00 of your ticket was donated to Toys for Tots, and we raised even more from the raffle we were running in the lobby (thanks to Domino Records, Merge Records, Frenchkiss Rercords, Partisan Records, Beggars/Matador, Bowery Presents, Rocks Off, Brooklyn Bowl, Live Nation, Vice, and more).
More pictures and videos from the show HERE, and below...
New Moods (whose members include a Young Magic member and Gang Gang Dance's engineer) have been busy practicing for their 9pm set at the BV Holiday Party at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (12/13) (some tickets will be on sale at the door), but they managed to get this list in just in time for those going (or still thinking of going) (or wondering if they should show up for the opener) (you should!) to get to know them better. Here is a list of the top 10 music things that New Moods loved in/about 2011 (in no particular order)...

New Moods @ Swan Dive (More by Tim Griffin)
We are last-minute shoppers at BrooklynVegan. In addition to G-Side TONIGHT (12/6), next week we've got three BV holiday shows and we're still adding bands to them. A week from tonight (12/13) is the first of them: Anna Calvi and Eleanor Friedberger at Music Hall of Williamsburg. We're happy to announce that New Moods will open the show. Tickets are $8, still on sale (though going quick) and one dollar of that will go to Toys for Tots.
If you haven't heard New Moods yet, the band features Billy Jones from Other Passengers and Melati Malay (who also is in Young Magic). You can download the a-side to their debut single, "Playtime," at the top of this post. The band mix a lot of disparate influences -- tropical pop, some definite techno/trance stuff going on in there too -- but the pieces fit together for a very danceable (and hum-able) whole. They played one of our day parties in Austin during SXSW this year, maybe some of you out there were there for that?
For those keeping score, the other two BV Holiday Parties next week are Fucked Up, Dom and more at Brooklyn Night Bazaar on Friday 12/16 and Twin Sister, Widowspeak and Ava Luna at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday 12/17. Tickets are still available for all of them as of this posting.
If you'd like to hear more New Moods, there's a couple more tracks you can stream at the bottom of this post. And if you'd like to hear even more, come to the show!

The Hold Steady/Caveman @ Beekman Beer Garden
As promised, everyone who showed up with a ticket (and then some) got in no problem to our free Hold Steady/Caveman show at Beekman Beer Garden in NYC, one of five total events that happened around the country as part of Evenbrite's Concert Confidential series on Saturday night (9/17). Each of the free shows had a charity attached, and ours was VH1 Save the Music Foundation (which we raised $4295 for!).
Though we were planning for a while, the date of the show was only announced 10 days earlier with the headliner revealed just 5 days before the show, "tickets" on sale just 2 days before, and the opener revealed just 1 day before.
Thanks to everyone who helped put this together, Eventbrite, the venue, the bartenders, the weather for staying cool and dry, everyone who came by, DJ Billy Jones from New Moods for playing sweet tunes before both bands, to Caveman for a jammin' set of tunes from their just-released debut album, and to headliner The Hold Steady for a raucous almost-2-hour set that never got boring (as usual). Check out their full setlist and more pictures from the whole show below...

DOWNLOAD: WATERS - "For the One" (MP3)
Van Pierszalowski, former lead singer of the recently broken-up Port O'Brien, now records under the moniker WATERS. Rather than the indie folk/pop Port O'Brien had become known for, in WATERS Van opts for a fuzzy '90s-lo-fi approach which can be heard above in the song "For the One." WATERS releases his debut LP Out In The Light on September 20 via TBD Records.
He's currently finishing up a tour in Europe with Wye Oak which he'll follow with three NYC dates. WATERS plays the Flavorpill/IROCKIROLL/The Bell House Northside showcase at Cameo Gallery on June 18 with Sean Bones, Neighbors, Zuzuka Poderosa, Young Adults, and Wojick. They also open for Deervana (aka Deer Tick as Nirvana) at their sold out Northside show at Brooklyn Bowl on June 19. WATERS then plays a headlining show at Mercury Lounge on June 21 with Exitmusic, Milagres, and Anni Rossi. Tickets are on sale.
The Cameo show is one of many that Sean Bones has happening at Cameo this month. He already played there last Thursday and he also plays there on June 23rd (with afro-funk band/collective Superhuman Happiness) and June 30th with the great New Moods. Full residency show lineups are below. Sean is playing new songs at the shows. Those songs will appear on the new record he's finishing recording with Shane Stoneback (Sleigh Bells, Cults, Vampire Weekend). Sean's last record came out on Frenchkiss.

Gang Gang Dance at MHOW - 5/4/2011 (photo by Jason Lester)
Gang Gang Dance and New Moods shared a bill at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (5/4). How was the show? If the picture above is to be believed, it was at least colorful. The video below kind of confirms the same.
If you missed it, or the opener, take note that New Moods are playing a FREE show at Knitting Factory on Monday, 5/9 with Sherlock's Daughter and Slowdance.
And the Gang Gang Dance party continues TONIGHT (5/5), as the band will DJ (not play) at clothing store Opening Ceremony's Cinco De Mayo Party at China Chalet in conjunction with a bigger partnership to promote all involved...
Gang Gang Dance and Opening Ceremony have paired up to promote the band's latest album, Eye Contact, which will be released by 4AD on May 10th.Stream Eye Contact in its entirety below. Grab an MP3 from it above. Cinco de Mayo flyer and more tour dates, also below...
It's a mind-warbling, multi-media collaboration spanning in-store displays, a band-curated mixtape, an exclusive 4AD Session and a Cinco Day Mayo record release party at Manhattan's China Chalet sponsored by a Swedish vodka company -- a multi-cultural celebration for the new album that only Gang Gang could conjure.
If you visit the Opening Ceremony stores in New York and Los Angeles throughout May, you will find eye catching window displays designed by multi-instrumentalist and reknowned artist in his own right, Brian DeGraw. Customers will also be able to take home their new clothes in a super limited-edition tote bag, also designed by DeGraw.
For online customers, you can visit Opening Ceremony's website (openingceremony.us) and listen to a Gang Gang Dance mixtape featuring Primal Scream, J Dilla and About Group to name a few. There are also exclusive band photos and, starting on May 9th, visitors can watch an exclusive preview of the band's 4AD session.
And to cap this all off, if you are in the New York area, you can hear members of the band DJ at Opening Ceremony's Cinco De Mayo Party on May 5th. It will run from 10 pm to 3 am at China Chalet, located at 47 Broadway. Other DJ guests include Spencer Sweeney and XXXchange. Admission is free and first-come first served. Again, Cinco De Mayo X Chinese bar X Swedish vodka...
Adventure (by Tim)
Braids (by Tim)
As discussed and/or pictured HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE, we threw a free, three stage party with M For Montreal at Swan Dive and Barbarella in Austin on Saturday, March 19, 2011.

New Moods @ Swan Dive (BrooklynVegan Day Party)
After playing their last hometown show at a swanky NYC art show benefit, Gang Gang Dance will bring it back down to earth with a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on May 4th with New Moods and Ghetto Gothic DJs. Tickets go on sale today at noon. The show takes place five days before the release of the new Gang Gang Dance LP Eye Contact on 4AD, and is currently their only announced U.S. headlining date.
GGD joins names like Guided by Voices, No Age, and many others as part of the 2011 edition of the Pitchfork Festival in July. And theye're on the finalized lineup, which was announced today, of the UK's Great Escape Festival (May 12-14 in Brightton).
New Moods, who are opening the Music Hall show, killed it during their noon set at Swan Dive at the BrooklynVegan day party on Saturday during SXSW (they went on right before Oh Land on the same stage). They actually had a bigger crowd than Baths who was playing on the bigger stage outside at the same super early time, I think because as people walked in the front door, they were sucked in by the "a precise and raucous four-piece" with captivating back and forth vocals by the intense Billy Jones (I first became a fan when he fronted Other Passengers and then got to know him through his work at Sin-e and then Pianos) (he has also since written for this site on occasion) and also-solo artist Melati Malay (she also plays in Young Magic who recently signed to Carpark). The band is rounded out by Gang Gang Dance engineer Sean Maffucci and drummer Steve Garofano. You can listen at their bandcamp, and you can see pictures from their set in this post.
More of those pictures, the rest of Gang Gang Dance's tour dates and stuff, below...

The 2nd week (2/11) features Tony Castles, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson & Brahms on DJ duty (tickets), while a mystery headliner plays with DADS (featuring Hima Suri of Das Racist + Quinn Walker of Suckers) and Blood Orange and a DJ set from Das Racist on 2/18 (tickets). More details on the HH residency, more Brahms dates, the digital 7-inch and the Headless Horseman album stream is below....
I am super bummed to report that UK band Yuck have cancelled their planned trip to the United States due to "personal reasons". They were set to play four shows (all still listed at their MySpace). One was in Philly, one was in Boston, one was the the PopGun party at Glasslands, and one was the official BrooklynVegan CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg happening Thursday, October 21st.
Music Hall of Williamsburg, October 21, 2010It was especially nice of Suuns since it now means they are playing two official CMJ showcases in one night. They're also part of the Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian/Dead Oceans show happening at Pianos that night:
* The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
* The Blow
* Screaming Females
* Young Man
Pianos, October 21, 2010Might as well mention that S. Carey is playing a BrooklynVegan show too, Saturday (10/23) during the day at Public Assembly (full lineup TBA). Might as well also mention that Small Black are playing Shea Stadium in Brooklyn on October 15th (Friday) with We Are All Romans and "VERY Special Guests". All Small Black dates below.
* SMALL BLACK 12:45AM
* SUUNS 11:45PM
* SUN AIRWAY 10:45PM
* LIA ICES 9:45PM
* S. CAREY 8:45PM
Meanwhile, Suuns (grab some MP3s above) are still out on tour with Land of Talk, though only for two more Texas shows before CMJ, but then they'll resume touring with Land of Talk after CMJ, and that's when they are back to play Bowery Ballroom on November 6th. They have also added a NYC show that takes place after their tour, at Glasslands Gallery on November 14th with BELL, Emil & Friends, and New Moods. The Glasslands show is New Moods' 7" release party, and New Moods have some shows sooner, including CMJ, too (listed below).
All dates and Suuns' new-ish video for "Up Past The Nursery" below...
