As mentioned in "What's Going On Thursday?," there's a party going on at Tammany Hall tonight, 5/5, with sets by Gordon Voidwell, Futurecop, NewVillager and a "secret guest." I don't know why they need to be secret (probably because they're playing Governors Ball), but apparently the secret guest is Reptar (according to a reputable source).
Speaking of Tammany Hall, that's also where James Blake is going to play his first-ever U.S. DJ set after his live Bowery Ballroom show on May 11th (thanks Ben). Tickets are on sale for the afterparty. Both event flyers below...

"going to this MNDR show so I can hate on it on the interwebz later." - winthusiast

MNDR and New Villager played the first of three L Magazine "Audiophile" events at the Brooklyn Museum last night (4/15). Up next in the series are Savoir Adore and MEN (who play Coachella's Mojave Tent on Sunday after Twin Shadow and before CSS) on 5/13, and Theophilus London and an artist TBA on 6/10.
Attendees were treated to an hour open vodka bar and could walk around the museum before and between the poppy, dancey sets. The sound wasn't great, but it was a museum lobby. More pictures from the event, and a video of MNDR playing a new song called "Cry" (she said it was the first time she ever played it live), below...

These Arms Are Snakes / Thao / Daniel Johnston & Hymns

Thirteen bands were scheduled to play the BrooklynVegan / Agency Group day party in Austin on Thursday, March 19, 2009. Twelve ended up playing - one of them twice. I think the story is that The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, who had a zillion other shows also scheduled during the SXSW week, got confused about what their set time was. For that reason (and traffic), they showed up too late to go on in their slot. Instead, The Wheel, who was our last-minute addition as opener on the inside stage, immediately went outside and played a second set on the larger outdoor stage in the late band's place. We got at least one "boo" when the "scheduling mixup" was announced, but what could we do? (sorry!) It was awesome of the Wheel to fill on a moment's notice. Hopefully the people outside enjoyed him after they got over the awkwardness. I didn't watch his second set, but he sounded amazing inside.
Due to overlap on the two stages, it was hard to see everyone that played the party. The most painful two decisions were Cursive or the Wrens, and These Arms or Snakes or Daniel Johnston. I think we originally had it worked out a little better in terms of that, but the main stage started to run late. I went back and forth and caught pieces of as much as I could (and all of Daniel).
Thanks to everyone who came!
Leia managed to catch 8 of the 12 bands (she missed The Wheel, Avett Brothers, New Villager and Au Revoir Simone). Her pictures are below...

South by Southwest is kind of like other people's dreams. If you're not a part of it, you may not want to hear about it. But at least for those in NYC, we do get some of SXSW's runoff, with many bands from Not America making pit stops here before or after the Austin onslaught. We did a rundown of Australia's offers last week, so in this few-part series I'll highlight some of the more notable bands from the UK and elsewhere in Europe who'll be visiting us over the next three weeks.
Let's start with three UK bands that are somewhat related. Like Laura Marling, who will be at SXSW again this year, Mumford and Sons, Peggy Sue, and Jay Jay Pistolet each have ties to London's "alt-folk movement"...
