Pitchfork

Pitchfork just posted their Honorable Mention Albums of 2013, which they say is "not #51 through #70 in our albums poll, but rather, records we thought were exceptional this year and deserved to be highlighted regardless of where they wound up." It includes a number of albums that did get Best New Music throughout the year (like the Burial EP that got a 9.0 last week), a certain inescapable young New Zealand pop star (who just announced two Roseland Ballroom shows), some metal representation, a couple indie legends, and the raw noise punk demo of Perfect Pussy, who also made Pitchfork's Top 100 Tracks.

Rock n' roll's enigmatic everyman and dark poet, Nick Cave, spent an hour last week fielding questions in anticipation for his upcoming tour with The Bad Seeds as well as his most recent live album, Live from KCRW (to be released November 29). Tickets to those tour dates -- including Prospect Park on July 26 -- go on presale today at 10 AM via Cave's tour site. You do need to register with the site before gaining access to the presale.

Much of the press conference concerned Cave's touring experiences as well as his relationship to his songs both old and new. Cave's songs, known for their incredibly dramatic narrative threads, have a tendency to divide fans and critics alike, concerning their possible meaning and implication. For Cave, however, the meaning isn't important, as he says: "It's more where the songs take me and to the places they take me. I can kind of reconvene with the ghosts of my past in a way, and that can be a beautiful thing." When asked what a perfect audience was, Cave explained: "It's about the kind of tension between the people that I can see - the first few rows - that kind of empowers me on stage. Rather than the kind of looking out at the mass, I get a lot of power and energy from one to one performances with people."

Tame Impala at Terminal 5 in February (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Tame Impala

We know these kinds of listicles get published all the time, and that everyone will always find ways to argue them, but this one is kind of interesting. Rolling Stone published their '50 Greatest Live Acts Right Now' list, where they asked a panel of writers, industry figures, and artists, "who rules the road in 2013?" It's got much of the stuff you'd think Rolling Stone would have on this kind of list (like insisting The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen are still better live than basically anyone else in 2013), but there's still some surprises, like the inclusion of Tame Impala amongst mainly rock/pop stars.

If you wanna see if you agree with Rolling Stone's assertions, you can catch some of the artists who made their list in NYC soon, like Tame Impala, Fiona Apple, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, and more.

Check out the full list below...

Coachella 2013 - Week 2 in Pictures - Day 3
Coachella 2013 - Week 2 in Pictures - Day 3

After two weekends, Coachella 2013 officially came to a close this past Sunday (4/21) with sets from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Wu-Tang Clan, Grimes, Vampire Weekend, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jessie Ware, Tame Impala, and more. Pictures of those artists, and some of the comparatively smaller but not less exciting artists that we missed at Weekend 1, like Ghost B.C., The Three O'Clock, DIIV, and Thee Oh Sees, are in this post.

We didn't catch James Blake this time like we did the first time, but he brought out RZA (who was there with Wu-Tang Clan) to perform their song, "Take A Fall For Me," which appears on James' new album, Overgrown. You can watch a video of that below.

In case you haven't been keeping up with our coverage, pictures of Weekend 2 Day 1 are HERE and Weekend 2 Day 2 are HERE. For Weekend 1 pictures, check out day 1 (HERE and HERE), day 2 (HERE) and day 3 (HERE).

Hope everyone had a great Record Store Day yesterday. As always, many of the previously unreleased tracks that came out yesterday have wound up on the internet. Check out streams of MGMT's new single, "Alien Days," Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' Push the Sky Away b-side, "Animal X," Chelsea Wolfe's "Fight Like Gods" from her split with King Dude, Nicolas Jaar's remix of Grizzly Bear's "Sleeping Ute," and the video for Garbage and Screaming Females' Patti Smith cover below.

As mentioned, Pharrell was promising something "extra special" for his House of Vans show on Friday (4/19), and though Daft Punk didn't show up, he did play his new collaborative single with the duo, "Get Lucky." Three times. Check out a video of that below (via CoS).

Nick Cave @ Beacon Theatre, 3/28/2013
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Like he did at SXSW a couple weeks ago (and pretty much his whole career, really), Nick Cave owned the stage last night (3/28) at Beacon Theatre, the first of three shows he and The Bad Seeds are doing at the tony NYC venue. Maybe not seemingly befit of a man who has songs like "No Pussy Blues," but Cave is pure class. A string section and choir added to the grandeur as they ran through material from the new Push the Sky Away, as well as classics like "Red Right Hand," "The Ship Song," and the one-two-KO of main set enders, "The Mercy Seat" and the profanely awesome "Stagger Lee." Setlist is below.

Sharon Van Etten very ably opened the show, as she'll do again tonight (3/29) and Saturday (3/30). More pictures from last night's Beacon Theatre show below...

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds at NPR's 2013 SXSW Showcase
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds have been on tour for a while now, and it finally hits NYC this week for three shows with Sharon Van Etten, starting tonight (3/28) at Beacon Theatre and continuing Friday and Saturday at the same venue. All three are sold out. The Bad Seeds' tour was also down in Austin for SXSW earlier this month, where they played NPR's showcase at Stubb's with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alt-J, Waxahatchee, and Youth Lagoon. Pictures of Nick Cave and YYYs are HERE and pictures of Waxahatchee's set are HERE. Even more pictures of Nick Cave's set are in this post.

Nick Cave also recently launched a Spotify app, which you can use to "discover the music of Nick Cave." It has streams of Nick's new album, Push the Sky Away, along with his classic material, and features a mood wheel where you can browse "carefully chosen moods which represent his songs" including Murder & Mayhem, Classic, Spiritual, and Super Dark. You can also make your own Nick Cave playlist and check out playlists made by others like Lou Reed and Jarvis Cocker.

And speaking of SXSW and Spotify, check out our "Best of BrooklynVegan SXSW 2013" Spotify playlist.

Updated dates are listed, along with more pictures from SXSW, below...

As mentioned, Nick Cave & the Bad Seed's Push the Sky Away will be released Febraury 19. You can stream the whole thing right now, though, and it makes for a particuarly nice soundtrack to a snowy day, which is what NYC is in for if the forecast is right. It probably sounds just as good in other climates, though. Listen over at The Guardian.
