Fat White Family at BV-SXSW 2014 (more by Tim Griffin)
FWF

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Fat White Family, New Casino , Flame Proof Moth @ Union Pool
Hide the children! The UK's sleezy, depraved rock band have hit NYC after leaving their stink on Austin at SXSW. They really are a "must see live" band, and this is your second of three chances here to do so. (Please note: the singer got totally naked at Pianos last night [as instagrammed by Sean Lennon!].) Not sold out.

Cut Copy, Jessy Lanza, Turkish Prison @ Terminal 5
Australian synth popsters wrap up their sold-out two-night run at Terminal 5 tonight. If you're going, don't miss Hyperdub-signed downtempo pop singer Jessy Lanza, who was pretty impressive last week at SXSW.

Pizza Underground, Total Slacker, Toby Goodshank @ Baby's All Right
Stretching their 15 minutes of fame like a molten chunk of moz, Pizza Underground return to Baby's All Right.

Gary Numan, Big Black Delta, Roman Remains @ Webster Hall
Bands like Cold Cave and Trust may be making the more talked-about gothy synth pop of today, but those bands all owe more than a little to Gary Numan, who stays active and can be seen in NYC tonight.

Shearwater, Death Vessel, Jesca Hoop @ The Bell House
Austin folk rockers Shearwater and their Sub Pop labelmate Death Vessel, who also makes folk but a more delicate kind, team up for this show at The Bell House tonight.

Screaming Females, Thou @ ABC No Rio (matinee)
There will be all kinds of guitar heroics at ABC No Rio tonight coming from the highly skilled NJ punk trio Screaming Females and sludge metal bashers Thou.

So So Glos, Household, Arm Candy @ Judson Memorial Church
As part of the 'Punk at 40' events, these local bands team up for a benefit concert that has all proceeds going towards local DIY venue Silent Barn.

NO, Reuben and the Dark, The Darcys @ Mercury Lounge
All three of these bands are on the Canadian label Arts & Crafts, and their joint tour is in NYC for two shows, this being the first. We're partial to The Darcys who have been known to cover whole albums by Steely Dan.

The Sound of Animals Fighting, Unwed Sailor @ Best Buy Theater
Post-hardcore experimentalists The Sound of Animals Fighting (aka multiple RX Bandits members and Anthony Green) have only played live once in 2006, and have never played the east coast. Tonight NYC will get their first chance to see them, and if this is your kinda thing it's an opportunity you shouldn't miss in case it's another 8 years before they perform again.

The xx @ Park Avenue Armory
The xx continue their run of 25 shows at the Park Avenue Armory which run through March 29. Each show is extremely intimate (holds 40 people) and very sold out.

The Allman Brothers Band @ Beacon Theatre
Pioneers of jam bands, and progenitors of blues and southern rock, The Allman Brothers continue their multi-night run at Beacon Theatre tonight.

Elysian Fields, Melvin Van Peebles Menage A Trois, The Aspiring Me @ Rough Trade
Having emerged from the '90s Knitting Factory scene, Elysian Fields tonight celebrate the release of their new album, For House Cats And Sea Fans. Some, though, may want to go tonight to see legendary filmmaker and musician Melvin Van Peebles. Others may want to just check out Rough Trade's venue which finally reopened this weekend.

Saralee, Shtknf, Downtown Boyz, Filthy Savage @ Death by Audio
Boston's Saralee make shambolic indiepop that recalls the early '90s days of Tiger Trap or Bratmobile. You can stream last year's self-titled album below.

John Wesley Harding's Cabinet of Wonders, Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Nada Surf, Eugene Mirman & more @ City Winery
It's another of John Wesley Harding's variety shows, and as usual, he's got an excellent and eclectic list of guests in music, comedy and more joining him.

Doron Sadja, Tristan Shepherd, Lea Bertucci, Diamond Terrifier @ Trans Pecos
Tonight's the record release party for ambient/noise artist Doron Sadja's album/book, Breath Heart Skin; kicking off the evening is Diamond Terrifier, the a solo sax/electronic project from Z's Sam Hillmer.

Forget Cassettes, New Myths, Mother, Ponychaser, Captain Hollow @ Pianos
Brooklyn trio New Myths make spectral synth-rock and are currently finishing up work on their new album. Also: we are neither condoning or condemning, but just want to inform you that Mother is fronted by Penn Badgley (aka Dan from Gossip Girl).

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

Warpaint at SXSW 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Warpaint

There are a lot of post-SXSW artists swinging through town tonight, making for show overload. You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Cut Copy, Jessy Lanza, Turkish Prison @ Terminal 5
Cut Copy bring their trusty synth pop over from Australia for a sold-out two-night run at Terminal 5, beginning tonight. If you're going, don't miss Hyperdub-signed downtempo pop singer Jessy Lanza, who was pretty impressive last week at SXSW.

Warpaint, Cate Le Bon @ Webster Hall
Warpaint's second album is a slow burn, more about vibe than obvious singles, but the record has many sultry charms. They're very good live too. If you're attending this sold-out show don't miss the wonderful Cate Le Bon who opens.

The War On Drugs, TEEN, Sore Eros @ MHOW
The War on Drugs sound better than ever on their new album, Lost in the Dream, which takes the sound they honed on 2011's Slave Ambient and expands on it. Tonight they wrap up their sold-out three-night run in NYC.

How To Dress Well, Forest Swords @ Rough Trade
R&B singer/songwriter How to Dress Well recently released a new single, "Words I Don't Remember," which sounded pretty promising that he only continues to get better. He's in NYC tonight for this sold out Rough Trade NYC show, which is the venue's first night open after having closed for months (but the second show -- Rathborne plays an early show at 7:30). Psychedelic beatmaker Forest Swords opens tonight and he's worth catching too.

Ex Hex, Andrew Cedermark @ Mercury Lounge
Ex Hex is the newest project of Mary Timony (Wild Flag, Helium, Autoclave), and from seeing them at SXSW and CMJ, it sounds like Mary is still churning out great songs over 20 years into her career. This is their second of two NYC shows this week.

Big Ups, Roomrunner, Greys, Kal Marks @ Shea Stadium
This is a NYC show for recent Carpark signees, Greys, on their way back home from SXSW to Toronto. The METZ-like punks will be joined by a solid local-ish lineup that includes NYC caustic post-hardcore band Big Ups, Baltimore grunge lovers Roomrunner, and Boston indie rockers Kal Marks.

Anamanaguchi, Maxo, Awkwafina @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar offers weekends of local artisan shopping, gourmet eats, beer and wine, ping pong, black light minigolf and music all under one Greenpoint roof. Tonight's musical entertainment is headlined by hyperactive 8-bit pop band Anamanaguchi.

The Clientele, Versus, Barbara Manning, The Saturday People @ The Bell House
he good folks at Chickfactor throw another birthday party at the Bell House, with lots of hand-picked bands both old and new. Tonight features a the first show in nine years from the classic Strange Geometry line-up of The Clientele, plus indie rock vets Versus, onetime SF Seals singer Barbara Manning and DC pop vets The Saturday People.

The Body, Theologian, Couch Slut @ Saint Vitus
The Body tour pretty constantly and their noisy sludge never gets old. Tonight they return to Saint Vitus for another show here with Theologian and Couch Slut.

Woman's Hour, Jenny Hval, Future Of What @ Glasslands
This London four-piece have been together since 2011, and over the course of a handful of singles have carved out an identifiable sound: chilled-out pop, heavy on synths but strictly slow-dance material. Comparisons to The xx are not entirely off-mark, but the quartet aren't quite that minimal. Having just played SXSW, they're in NYC for two shows, this being the second. If you're going tonight, don't miss Jenny Hval, who brings over her terrifically strange art pop all the way from Norway.

Fat White Family @ BV SXSW (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Fat Whites

Fat White Family, Shilpa Ray, Vaadat Charigim, Memo @ Pianos
Hide the children! The UK's sleezy, depraved rock band have hit NYC after leaving their stink on Austin at SXSW. They really are a "must see live" band, and this is your first of three chances here to do so. Tonight's an early-ish show (FWF are on at 10 PM) with Israeli shoegazers Vaadat Charigim and local hellion Shilpa Ray. That's a good show!

Shellshag, Brick Mower, Ben Snakepit, Pity Party @ Acheron
It's a great show at Acheron tonight with local DIY vets Shellshag, their punky Don Giovanni labelmates Brick Mower, Austin zinester Ben Snakepit, and ex-The Measure [sa] punks Pity Party.

The Suzan, Clinical Trials, Fielded, Psychic Reality @ Death by Audio
There's some good local music on this bill, including indie pop band The Suzan and electronic pop singer/producer Fielded.

Vulture Shit, Mannequin Pussy, Gym Shorts, Big Neck Police @ Emet
NYC punks Mannequin Pussy have been a regular on the local live scene for a while, but this is their first hometown show since announcing their signing to Tiny Engines (Cayetana, The Hotelier). Also of note on this bill is local guitar-less punks Vulture Shit.

Tanks Amigo, Christines, Univers, Doubting Thomas Cruise Control @ Cake Shop
Spanish band Univers make a reverby sound not too far off from Girls Names or Crystal Stilts; members of CS are part of Tanks Amigo who play their first show in two years; and Christines is the very Swervedriver-y new band from Andy Burr of Woven Bones.

Axxa/Abraxas, Donovan Blanc, Anika (DJ set) @ Baby's All Right
Ben Asbury made the new Axxa / Abraxas album with Jarvis Taveniere from Woods, and you can definitely hear some of his band in Axxa/Abraxas -- the folky psych-pop and occasional falsetto vocals. Tonight's his first NYC show and also features the mysterious Donovan Blanc, plus a DJ from German singer Anika.

FaltyDL, Teengirl Fantasy, Huerco S, Weird Magic DJ set @ Baby's All Right
The late show at Baby's tonight is a dancey one with three of NYC's finest beatmakers.

NO, Reuben and the Dark, The Darcys @ Cameo Gallery
All three of these bands are on the Canadian label Arts & Crafts, and their joint tour is in NYC for two shows, this being the first. We're partial to The Darcys who have been known to cover whole albums by Steely Dan.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

Four shows have been announced so far. The first is experimental Japanese musician Keiji Haino on March 27 before he heads to Tennessee for the Big Ears Festival. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Then, as discussed, The Wick is one of the venues that NYC's experimental music festival Unsound happens in. That fest will have Porter Ricks, Vladislav Delay, Miles, Leisure Muffin, Ital & Halal and Le Petit Garcon on April 5. Tickets are on sale now.

The Wick will also be one of the venues used for hardcore/punk fest New York's Alright. That includes the Dawn of Humans, Contingent, Blotter, Asile and Goosebumps show on April 17 (tickets) and the Hank Wood & the Hammerheads, DiE, Savageheads, The Impalers and Razorheads show on April 20 (tickets). The other NY's Alright shows happen at Le Poisson Rouge, Acheron, and ABC No Rio. Updated schedule below.

noise pop

We mentioned earlier that Real Estate would be playing the 2014 Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco, where they've actually got two shows at The Independent: February 28 with Dream Boys, and March 1 with Dominant Legs. What we haven't done is run down this year's fest which happens at venues all over San Francisco from February 25 - March 2.

In addition to Real Estate, this year's Noise Pop (now in its 21st year) features such acts as Throwing Muses, Cold Cave, Mark Mulcahy, Mikal Cronin, Bob Mould, No Age, The Fresh & Onlys, Dr. Dog, Courtney Barnett, Cheatahs, and lots more. Badges that get you into all events are on sale now.

Someome of the highlights include Vampire Weekend, Frightened Rabbit, The Thermals, Black Lips, Camera Obscura, Merchandise, Bleached, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Eagles of Death Metal, Parenthetical Girls, Indians, Night Beds, IO Echo, KEN Mode, Prince Paul, Pure Bathing Culture, Sepalcure, UK motorik post-punks TOY, Finnish instrumentalists K-X-P, Toronto's Moon King, UK indie rockers Splashh (not Brooklyn Splash with one "h") and loads more. Line & Circle

Los Angeles' Line & Circle will be touring the East Coast this fall, including a stay in NYC during CMJ. No real specifics to speak of but they will play the White Iris showcase on October 18, wherever that ends up happening. More details will surface when we get closer to the fest (which is getting close!).

White Iris is the influential singles-only label that released early 7"s by Best Coast, Fidlar, Electric Guest and No, the latter two being Line & Circle's tourmates for the non-CMJ dates on the tour. The band's sound owes more than a little to jangly '80s American college rock bands like Miracle Legion, Grapes of Wrath (Canadian, I know), The Connells, The Reivers, and other bands who came along in R.E.M.'s wake. It's definitely a sound that hasn't been dug out by very many new bands lately. You can stream both sides of their White Iris single below.

As previously mentioned, Electric Guest and No play Irving Plaza on October 20. Tickets for that show are still on sale, though it looks like Jinja Safari opens that instead of Line & Circle.

A list of all Line & Circle tour dates and those song streams are below.
