Springfield, IL's Looming is the indie rock band led by Jessica Knight, who also plays bass in the hardcore band Asthma and in Mother Leopard (whose only music online appears to be a 2011 demo from before she joined). They also have a former member of the mewithoutYou-ish Our Lady, who have an upcoming hometown show that Jessica opens with a solo set.
Looming released a self-titled EP in 2013, and they've since signed to No Sleep, who will release their debut album, Nailbiter, on August 14 (pre-order). We've got the premiere of first single "Onward" in this post. Both that song and the EP are the kind of folky, poppy, punky stuff that fans of Hop Along, Radiator Hospital, Cayetana, and more in that realm would probably dig. Like all of their singers though, Jessica has a sound of her own which makes Looming stand out against other similar bands. Listen to the new song and the EP, below.

Long-running singer/songwrriter and former Waxwing frontman Rocky Votolato is returning this year with his eighth solo album, Hospital Handshakes, which is due out on April 21 via his new label home No Sleep. It follows releases on Barsuk and other labels, making him at least the second artist after Harvey Danger to team up with both Barsuk and No Sleep. The record was produced by former Death Cab for Cutie member Chris Walla, who also produced Harvey Danger frontman Sean Nelson's recent solo album and many other records.
While Rocky's often heard without too much more than an acoustic guitar, the album's lead single "The Hereafter" is the kind of catchy, driving indie rock that wouldn't be out of place on another Walla-produced album, Nada Surf's The Weight Is a Gift. And while it still retains Rocky's intimacy, there's also an undeniable Springsteen influence on those anthemic melodies. Listen below, via Stereogum.
Rocky's gonna get even more intimate when he goes on his living room tour which begins in Orcas Island, WA this week (3/12) and wraps up in Seattle in late April. Like they usually are on these living room tours, the venues are unannounced, but advance tickets for most dates are on sale.
The tour's NYC stop is technically in a living room, but it's a living room that frequently doubles as Bushwick DIY venue Suburbia. It happens April 2 with a great lineup featuring another '00s Barsuk songwriter, Kind of Like Spitting's Ben Barnett (now on Topshelf), and former Vivian Girl Cassie Ramone. This show actually has no advance tickets; it's $10 at the door.
That's one day after Kind of Like Spitting's full-band tour with The City on FIlm (Braid co-frontman Bob Nanna's other band) hits NYC at The Studio at Webster Hall (4/1). Opening that one is the No Sleep-signed Lee Corey Oswald, and the band Living Room... who live at Bushwick venue Suburbia. Tickets are still available.

Somos at The Studio at Webster Hall in June (more by Mimi Hong)
Somos and Sorority Noise both put out their debut albums this year, Temple of Plenty and Forgettable, respectively, and now they've teamed up for a split EP that's due out next week (11/4) via Bad Timing Records (pre-order). While Somos' debut was mostly punky indie rock, they've slowed down for their two contributions here, giving themselves space to experiment with new layers and more complexity. And while much of Sorority Noise's album was crunchy pop rock, the last three tracks had them moving in a more somber direction as well, which is what they continue here. A stream of the full EP premieres in this post and can be listened to below.
Both bands have interesting futures ahead of them too. Somos recently announced that they left Tiny Engines for their new label home of No Sleep and are planning to put out a new album for the label in 2015. Meanwhile, Sorority Noise recently mentioned that two of their members left the band but they'll be moving forward.
Both bands have shows coming too. Sorority Noise are playing The Fest but first will play the Topshelf CMJ showcase (presented by Washed Up Emo) happening Friday (10/24) at Cameo with The World Is A Beautiful Place, Empire! Empire!, Field Mouse and Wildhoney. That show is free with RSVP (no badges required). Somos have a ton of dates, including the previously announced run with Modern Baseball, Foxing and Crying that hits NYC on December 12 at Gramercy Theater and December 15 at MHOW. Tickets for both of those shows are still available.

As discussed, Xerxes are releasing a new album, Collison Blonde, on October 21 via No Sleep and also playing their label's CMJ showcase (BV co-presents) that same day. Since we last spoke, they released another song from the LP ("A Toast") and played two others from it in an Audiotree session ("Use As Directed" and "Nosedive"). You can watch the Audiotree video and stream "A Toast" below. They also added more tour dates around that showcase, including a run with Coliseum surrounding both bands' appearances at The Fest. All of their dates are listed below as well.
The No Sleep/BV CMJ showcase, which is free and happens October 21 at The Paper Box, also includes Aviator, Rescuer, The Felix Culpa, John Nolan, Run Forever, Maps For Travelers and more. It starts at 6 PM, and those who show up early will receive No Sleep's 2014 12" vinyl sampler (limited to 150 copies), which includes new and unreleased music from Xerxes, The Felix Culpa, Aviator, Run Forever, Maps For Travelers, Old Lines, Puig Destroyer, Lee Corey Oswald and more. Those in attendance will also have a chance to win a No Sleep 2014 Vinyl Subscription, an Orbit Basic Turntable from U-Turn Audio, a gift certificate from Keep Company, and a snowboard and outfits from Glamour Kills.

The reunited Felix Culpa released a split with newer band Foreign Tongues last month (August) on No Sleep (order yours), and now there's a video for one of Foreign Tongues' contributions, "Luxury," premiering in this post. Foreign Tongues singer Cameron Moretti sounds more than a little influenced by Conor Oberst, and though Foreign Tongues are a bit more polished than early Bright Eyes, their sad folky indie rock should appeal to fans of the Collection of Songs - Lifted era. Foreign Tongues also have a short Northeast tour coming up in October, which kicks off with the previously discussed FREE No Sleep CMJ Showcase (co-presented by BrooklynVegan) happening on October 21 at The Paper Box (17 Meadow St in Brooklyn) with John Nolan, Run Forever, Xerxes, Rescuer, Aviator, Maps For Travelers, The Felix Culpa and more. After that, they'll hit Cambridge, Hamden, CT and Philly. All dates are listed below.

Baltimore's Old Lines is the current band of Mitch Roemer (ex-Pulling Teeth, Ruiner), and they'll be releasing a new album, No Child Left Behind, on October 14 via No Sleep (pre-order), their first for the label. It follows last year's If You See Something, Say Something EP on Reptilian Records. The album's new single "The Hunt(ed)" is still the kind of blaring hardcore we've come to expect from Old Lines and Mitch's past projects, but this time around they're even more metallic and eviler sounding. Here's what vocalist Matt Taylor has to say about it:
The Hunt(ed) is a gut reaction to the sadness and rage of wolf hunting. Not only have we demonized these animals, creating fear and promoting misinformation, but we have also transformed their systemic slaughter into a tragic display of human imperialism. Our collective desire to "conquer" nature, and infantile need to prove our superiority has only served to separate us from the natural world, and will become one more nail in our coffins when the tables turn.That track makes its premiere in this post and can be streamed below.
All living things in our world deserve a chance to live freely, and we will never find peace of any sort until we realize that.
Old Lines will also be going on a tour which kicks off in NYC on October 24 at The Hideaway (1121 Myrtle Ave). No word yet on other bands or if Old Lines will be playing any other NYC shows while they're here, considering that's the week of CMJ. After that, they'll make their way to The Fest, where they play The Atlantic on 11/1 with Fucking Invincible, Ex-Breathers, Direct Effect and others.

Louisville post-hardcore rippers Xerxes are set to release the followup to their 2012 debut LP, Our Home Is A Deathbed, with a new album titled Collision Blonde on October 21 via No Sleep. We've got the premiere of its brand new single, "Exit 123," which is a terrific track that fans of this kinda stuff should dig. Here's what vocalist Calvin Philley had to say about it:
I cooked at a restaurant in southern Indiana about 50 hours a week for about a year leading up to the recording of collision blonde. I got fired during the recording process but that's a different story. Exit 123 is the first exit after you cross the bridge over the ohio river from Louisville to New Albany on I-64 west and the route I took to work. I have severe anxiety about driving and it only gets worse as things pile up in my life with girls, money, work and anything else. Once I just panic attacked all the way to work, thought I was dying and all that. I fantisized about running through the guardrail in my shitty Chevy SUV. That's it. I got myself fired in April and haven't been back to Indiana since.The album was produced by emo renaissance man Evan Weiss. Listen to the new song below.
Xerxes are also on board for this year's No Sleep CMJ showcase which is also their record release show and which BrooklynVegan is proudly co-presenting. It's no secret that the '90s are all the rage right now. The internet (and maybe even your real life) is filled with nostalgia for everything from Pogs to Nickelodeon cartoons to Tamagotchis and this reality check from The Onion that the '90s weren't only Pogs, Nickelodeon cartoons and Tamagotchis. Indie rock is no exception. The sounds of the Alternative Nation era can be heard in many of today's indie bands, and countless '90s OGs have reformed to excellent results, playing not just to the people who saw them the first time around but to many new, younger fans. When it comes to discussing '90s rock, we usually turn the conversation towards critically acclaimed bands like Pavement, Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, Built to Spill, Neutral Milk Hotel, and My Bloody Valentine or huge bands like Nirvana, Weezer, and Radiohead. You don't need another list telling you those bands are great. (But if you do, those lists are easily Googleable and recommended!) Instead, here's an alternative (pun intended) way of looking at the decade. Here's a list that highlights nine great bands who seem like they're starting to get re-evaluated a bit and starting to get the credit they deserve (some more than others).
I'm not trying to take the obscurer-than-thou route either. In fact, there's a good chance you've heard of all of these bands. All of them were on major labels. Some didn't have enough hits to get legitimately popular or remembered for more than one or two songs, but because of their MTV/KROQ associations they weren't very indie-cool either. Some achieved more mainstream success (often by changing their sound), an even bigger indie cred killer. But all of them are doing cool stuff right now, whether it's new albums, vinyl reissues, tours of the classic material, or new related bands. Almost all of them also have a clear influence on younger, modern bands. Whatever it is, it's reminding us why they were such great artists to begin with.
Of course this list could've had way more than nine bands. So feel free to comment telling us which ones you would've included and which ones you think we should've left off. Check out the list (in no particular order), with commentary and song streams, below.

Boston's Aviator are yet another fine example of modern bands keeping alive '90s/'00s screamo and melodic hardcore -- see also Touche Amore, Pianos Become the Teeth, Defeater, Frameworks, State Faults, etc etc etc. Their debut full length album, Head In The Clouds, Hands In The Dirt, follows EPs, splits and a demo dating back to 2010 and comes out August 19 via No Sleep (pre-order). Its new single "There Was A Light (It Went Out)" (a Smiths reference?) greatly proves what they're capabale of. Vocalist TJ Copello sings a lot on the new album, but it's all screamed/shouted vocals on this single. The track opens with some big riffs, and once those vocals come in the band transition into post-rock atmospherics, then to pounding indie rock and finally to crushing post-hardcore. Here's what drummer Aviv Marotz had to say about it:
Between heavy riffing and some rock-god moments, this song is one of our favorites to play live. I'm really happy with the way [video director] Erik Rojas pulled out the emotion of this song, accurately displaying feelings of anxiety and stagnation. Amen.The video premieres in this post. Aviator also have many tour dates coming up, including a run with Taking Meds that hits NYC on August 25 at The Studio at Webster Hall with Au Revoir and For Everest (tickets). After that, they'll go on a fall run with two of their labelmates, the likeminded Rescuer and the recently reunited Felix Culpa. The tour hits NYC on October 21 for No Sleep's CMJ showcase. Stay tuned for venue and the rest of the lineup for that. Both Aviator and Rescuer also play The Fest.

The last record from Tampa's Rescuer, 2013's With Time Comes the Comfort (Rise Records), was melodic hardcore (think Modern Life Is War, Defeater, Comeback Kid), but they've changed things up for its followup, Anxiety Answering, which comes out on June 3 via new label home No Sleep. Not to say they aren't still a heavy band, but they've toned down the thick, aggressive riffs in favor of the type of contemporary post-hardcore/screamo made by Touche Amore, Pianos Become the Teeth, and others of that style. They've expanded their sound to include greater dynamic variety and prettier, more complex guitar parts, and have done so without sacrificing the sheer power of their earlier work. The production is nicer here too, courtesy of Jack Shirley, whose work with Deafheaven, State Faults, Frameworks and others proves he's got a pretty good knack for this sort of thing.
You can get your first taste of the album from its first single, "Out of Focus," which features Andy Nicholl (of Frameworks) and his wife Madeline, and premieres in this post. If you were to turn the song off after 30 seconds, you might think you just got your hands on a Floral Green b-side, but then busy drumming and harsh vocals enter, taking the song for a complete 180. Here's what vocalist JP Marra had to say about it:
"Out of Focus" is about growing apart from the people that you grew up with. My favorite thing about this song is that our friends Andy (of Frameworks) and Madeline Nicholl drove down from their wedding in Seattle and recorded some vocal parts on this song. Leeds band Battle Lines are set to release a new 7" on April 15 via No Sleep (pre-order), the label home to State Faults, Sainthood Reps, and (formerly) La Dispute. But unlike their labelmates, Battle Lines draw from dream pop and synth pop that recalls the sensuality of the new Warpaint album more than anything by La Dispute. And hey, if Carpark can put out an emo album, then No Sleep can put out Battle Lines. The single's A-side, "Colonies," makes its premiere in this post. Check it out below.
The band will be crossing the Atlantic to play SXSW in Austin this March. No other North American dates were announced, but maybe we'll get lucky and they'll squeeze something in before or after. All dates (the rest are in the UK), are listed, along with the new song stream, below...

No Sleep Records was responsible for many of the year's great punk, emo, and hardcore (and other genres in that realm) releases this year, and the label's presence increased in the indie rock community thanks to a new love affair between emo and indie. To celebrate the holidays, the label has given us a free compilation of holiday music from a few standout artists on the label, including Allison Weiss, Maps For Travelers, State Faults, and others, plus a couple artists not on the label, including Harvey Danger's Sean Nelson (who put out a pretty underrated solo album this year). Santa Rosa, CA's State Faults (formerly Brother Bear) might live a bit north from their Cali neighbors Touche Amore and Calculator, but like those bands, they're helping to carry the torch for a modern screamo scene indebted to the sounds of bands like Pg.99 and Envy. They match revved up punk with raw screams and post-rock atmosphere on "Wildfires," the second track to be released from, Resonate/Desperate, the band's sophomore record under their current name. That track makes its premiere in this post, and you can check it out below. The album's first single is the equally excellent "Meteor," which you can hear over at AltPress.
Resonate/Desperate is due out on November 12 via No Sleep (La Dispute, Balance & Composure). The album artwork and tracklist, along with the new song stream, are below. No tour dates to report of at the moment.

Upstate, NY hardcore band Drug Church is the new-ish project of Self Defense Family/End Of a Year frontman Patrick Kindlon, who released their debut full length, Paul Walker, earlier this summer via No Sleep. The album followed a 2012 EP on the same label, and a 7" from this past June that came out via Secret Voice, the Deathwish imprint run by Touche Amore frontman Jeremy Bolm. Drug Church doesn't stray too far from the straightahead hardcore/punk of Kindlon's other project, but they're both good, so who's complaining? Stream Paul Walker and a track from their 7" below.
This fall, Drug Church will be heading out on a tour with NJ emo duo Dads (whose Pretty Good EP is out now on 6131). That tour comes to NYC for a TBA Brooklyn show on October 17, which is during CMJ. All dates are listed, along with the tour flyer, below.
Meanwhile, after that tour, Self Defense Family will head out on a European tour with Touche Amore and Touche drummer Elliot Babin's melodic punk solo project Dad Punchers, who recently released his These Times Weren't Made For You 7" via Secret Voice (stream it in full below).
UPDATE: Since we last spoke, a Self Defense Family NYC show has also been announced, happening on September 29 at Saint Vitus with Deep Pockets and a special guest. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Touche Amore also have US dates, including a run with AFI that hits NYC on October 10 at Webster Hall (sold out) and a BV-presented headlining show at 285 Kent (10/9) a day earlier with Geoff Rickly's band United Nations and The Saddest Landscape (also sold out). In other Secret Voice news, the label also recently released a solo cassette by Single Mothers frontman Andrew Thomson, titled Honesty Is A Confidence Problem. It's got a real Craig-Finn-meets-acoustic-emo vibe, it's really good, and it can be streamed below. Single Mothers will be in NYC when their tour with A Wilhelm Scream hits The Studio at Webster Hall on November 15 with Lugosi and The Reveling. Tickets for that show are still available.

Kansas City's Maps For Travelers have gained some well-deserved comparisons to Quicksand (they also name them as an influence), and it's an apt namedrop considering both bands share a knack for combining the heavy intensity of post-hardcore with the melodicism of alternative rock. Something like the screams in the intro of "Get a New Face" imply a hardcore/punk background, but the riffing in "Matter Of Time" comes ready to fill stadiums in a way Siamese Dream-era Billy Corgan would have been proud of. The band's debut album, Change Your Name, comes out via No Sleep Records this week (8/27), and you can now listen to a stream of the entire thing, which makes its premiere in this post. Long Island post-hardcore band Sainthood Reps have announced that they'll release a new album, Headswell, the follow-up to their 2011 debut, on October 22 via their new label home, No Sleep Records (Braid, La Dispute). The opening track/first single, "Shelter," opens up like it's going to be a long lost Nirvana single, but then once the vocals come in, it transitions into total hardcore punk attack. Other elements of alt-rock and and a bit of shoegaze/post-rock fill the track out too, making for an anthemic and diverse recall of the '90s. As discussed, Sainthood Reps are also touring this year, and they'll play NYC on October 24 at Knitting Factory with I Am the Avalanche, I Hate Our Freedom, and Sad and French. Tickets for that show are still available.
