I'm excited to finally get to announce the kick-ass FREE show I've been working on for months with the fine people at Solar One. Thanks also to everyone who got in touch and volunteered their band and/or time for this cause.
I told you to save the date, and here's why:
Brooklyn Vegan & Solar One present Citysol....We're also co-sponsoring the free Menomena/Beat the Devil show at the Seaport the day before, and hosting an opening night party the night before that with DRAGONS OF ZYNTH, DJ Mistakes (bicycle-powered turntablism), and Brightside.
A FREE SHOW on SATURDAY JULY 14 (1pm-10pm) in NYC w/
* LES SAVY FAV (!!)
* Land Of Talk (previously announced)
* O'Death (yeah)
* The Besnard Lakes (previously announced)
* These Are Powers (ex-Liars)
* The Budos Band (funky)
* Frankpollis (starring Jackson)
* plus a very special performance from OCDJ (Dance Party until the solar goes out!)@ Solar One at Stuyvesant Cove Park - located along the East River between 18th and 23rd Streets. Solar One sits in the north end of the park, near the 23rd Street entrance and the Gulf Gas station.
Some interesting facts about the show on the 14th:
- It is the same weekend as the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago - more reason to stay home.
- It is outside (please don't rain, please don't rain).
- It is one day before the free 'Ponderosa Stomp' show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn
- The bands will be performing on a solar + biodiesel powered stage.
- It is one week before the free Siren Festival in Coney Island
- There will be art installations to look at, and a "green product marketplace" for you to buy stuff at.
- It will rock.

Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation was reissued this week (with bonus stuff). The original came out in 1988. If you're twenty-five now, you were six then. Eighteen year olds were negative one. Even thirty year olds were only eleven. You pretty much needed to be born by 1969 or 70 to have even had a chance of being in college when the now classic album came out. What does Daydream Nation mean to you? If the answer is 'nothing', now you can catch up and decide by (either buying it, or) streaming it this week on AOL. Decide if the ticket price is worth it. Evan says it is. (The Slits are opening in Brooklyn by the way)
AOL is also streaming Queens of the Stone Age's Era Vulgaris, the newly reissued O'Death (Largehearted Boy missed that one) and the U.S. release of Datarock's album.

Dan Deacon @ Silent Barn, NYC - May 5, 2007 (CRED)

I wonder if Dan Deacon ran into O'Death in the hallways of Purchase College. From an O'Death press release...
Originally formed in 2003 while the members attended SUNY Purchase, the band (O'Death) – with Jamie on guitar and vocals, Gabe Darling on banjo, David Rogers-Berry on drums, Jesse Newman on bass, and Bob Pycior on fiddle – self-released their first album in 2004. They quickly took to the task of stirring up a wholly original scene of NY musicians with their reverently twisted take on Americana filtered through a wealth of musical influences as divergent as Bill Monroe, Prince, Dock Boggs, Neil Young, The Microphones, and The Misfits via a series of the shows the now defunct Apocalypse LoungeTickets are still on sale for the Dan Deacon / Ponytail / Meneguar / Lions & Tigers show at Mercury Lounge on May 12th.
O'Death

Ernest Jenning Records is re-releasing O'Death's record Head Home on June 12th. If was also just announced that O'Death is playing the Spiegeltent in NYC this Summer. And as usual, O'Death are also playing plenty of other shows....

Big Stereo wrote, "Muscles is my new favorite artist thanks to recent spins on Whothehell.net and Kiss Atlanta. And judging from Hype Machine I am totally late on this game. You know you’re late when Fluxblog has hit a band not once but twice. AND I don’t know how I missed Muscles the first three times Fluokids posted, but I digress…"
Muscles "emerging from the underground"

F'd Up are no longer opening for Art Brut (and in turn Soulwax). They were supposed to or something, but now O'Death is opening instead which is actually more awesome kind of. O'Death then play NYU with Battles and the Dirty Projectors the next night (btw, NYU students can also now buy tickets for the Thermals and Hold Steady).
And if you're just going to Soulwax at 11, don't be late (like Big Stereo - see above) - Modular's newest signing from Australia Muscles is opening the show (and all Radio Soulwax shows on this tour). Listen to Muscles at MySpace (or use one of the links above to get MP3s).
All O'Death and Soulwax/Muscles tour dates below....
