O'Death

Beards were in the house when O'Death shared a bill with Brown Bird at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC on 1/21. It was O'Death's second NYC show in less than a month, as they also headlined Spike Hill in Williamsburg on New Year's Eve. Here are some pictures from the Manhattan show. More of them below....

Yo La Tengo, who are now selling a Hanukkah t-shirt for charity for a limited time (if you can get the link to work), are playing eight sold out Hanukkah shows at Maxwell's later this month.

Dump, aka the other project of Yo La Tengo's James McNew, is playing a show at Spike Hill in Brooklyn tonight (12/11) with The Medium Necks and Asuna. Tickets are still available (and probably will be at the door).

Spike Hill, the Williamsburg bar and music venue conveniently located on Bedford right near the L, has also announced that O'Death will be playing there on New Year's Eve. Tickets are on sale.

O'Death have also announced a January 2012 tour with Brownbird that has them playing another NYC show at Le Poisson Rouge on 1/21. All O'Death dates are listed below...

O'Death @ The Mohawk
O'Death

"Outside"[their latest album] expands the band's Gothic-folk sound. O'Death deploys Americana elements -- banjo, violin, acoustic guitar -- to craft haunting, cinematic songs...

O'Death may never top the charts but it's made a splash on the alternative and folk scenes with relentless live shows. The band's first gig after Rogers-Berry's close call was at the famed Newport Folk Festival. "We were definitely one of the more high-energy acts of the day, but it was appreciated," Jamie said.

Affirmation helps. In New York City, they don't fit in.

"I'm not sure what it is we're doing but there's not really anything like that going on in New York," Jamie said. "My gut's telling me we're not a part of a scene. ... I always feel out there like we're doing our own thing." -[Go Erie]

O'Death completed a three-week tour of East Coast/Midwest/Southwest dates in September with Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship? which concluded in Maine. The dates left out NYC, a fact that will be rememdied when the band takes to the stages of Bell House on Saturday (10/8) with The Woes and Lady Lamb The Beekeeper. Tickets are still available.

Here are some pictures from the Austin show at The Mohawk on 9/1 with Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship?, American Spirit and Guns are below (sorry no shots of Guns though) (rimshot!). More below...

O'Death at Bell House (more by Jason House)
O'Death

O'Death's vague attempt at tour dates have gotten a little bit clearer. As previously mentioned, "4/15 in Brooklyn" show will take place at Knitting Factory (tickets), and it is with Philly's Grandchildren who also play a bunch of other shows on the tour, and who you can catch even sooner with Delicate Steve, Dustin Wong, and Strange Shapes at Public Assembly on 2/5.

O'Death's tour kicks off in March right before SXSW where they'll play a Panache showcase at Red 7 on 3/17 with Thee Oh Sees, Janka Nabay, Pterodactyl, Tôg (Norway), Surf City, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Grass Widow, Bare Wires, and Heavy Cream. Updated tour dates and some videos below...

Remember that 4/15 Brooklyn O'Death show we mentioned? It's happening at Knitting Factory and tickets are now on sale.

Remember that 3/03 Smith Westerns show at Mercury Lounge? Well it sold out already, but the band is also playing Knitting Factory two days later and tickets are on sale.

Tickets are still on sale for both Yann Tiersen shows at Highline Ballroom, but since first announcing they clarified that the Feb 18th show will be "unplugged with orchestra" and Feb 19th will be "regular band."

Speaking of two nights in a row at Highline Ballroom, tickets are on sale for both Devotchka/Mariachi El Bronx shows that are happening in March.

Tickets are on sale for the Versus show at Mercury Lounge.
.
Versus the band should not be confused with "Versus: An evening of contests, interviews and duets" that is happening at Littlefield on 1/26 with Eugene Mirman, Julie Klausner, Sean O'Connor & Julian McCullough, Robert Krulwich, Damian Kulash, Michael Moschen, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Carla Rhodes & Cecil Sinclaire, The Brothers Lucas, Matt Oberg. Tickets are on sale for that too.

Takka Takka have been added as opener on the Trail of Dead show happening at Littlefield. Tickets are still on sale.

Back in December we mentioned that Kings Go Forth are playing Southpaw in February. They're playing SOB's too, and tickets are on sale for both (updated dates below).

The Go! Team return to NYC in April. They play Brooklyn Bowl on the 16th of that month. Tickets are on sale. All dates below.

O'Death

If physical contact with the audience was on your agenda as a show goer, you just had to hold on till O'Death took the stage. Very early on in the set the mosh pit began. As mosh pits often do, it grew. No one was hurt, it was all in good fun. It was hot and smelly. Some band members started to disrobe. Shirts flew off and the energy fueled an encore. -[musicmattersman]
O'Death, Tim Fite, and The Goddamn Rattlesnake teamed up to play The Bell House in 1/15 as part of a one off for all three bands. For O'Death, the show was one of two scheduled in NYC for 2011, as they recently announced that they will play again on 4/15 as part of a larger tour that will include an appearance at SXSW.

For The Goddamn Rattlesnake, The Bell House doubled as a record release party. J. Rattlesnake released the new LP via Bandcamp at the start of the year. Stream the LP in full. More pictures from The Bell House are below.

The Goddamn Rattlesnake

Alt-country isn't exactly your first thought when I say the words "Deathwish" and "Acid Tiger", but J. Rattlesnake of said Brooklyn band straddles both worlds with The Goddamn Rattlesnake. The country-inflected band welcomed its LP Stay Sweet on the first day of the new year and it features sole member J. Rattlesnake on vocals, guitar, banjo and percussion, amongst a gang of contributors. The Goddamn Rattlesnake channels classic country over tracks like the sunny "Drinking On My Mind", "Born By The Sea", and "Slow Down Romeo" which you can download above.

Check out The Goddamn Rattlesnake's Stay Sweet streaming in full below. Head to his Bandcamp to snag a copy.

Make sure and get to The Bell House early on Saturday (1/15) because The Goddamn Rattlesnake will be on hand to support O'Death and Tim Fite. Tickets are still available

The Brooklyn show is a one off for O'Death, but the local band has already planned a much larger tour after a trek to SXSW; look for them to end that tour with another Brooklyn show on 4/15 (venue TBA). All dates are listed below.

O'Death is plotting a new LP for Spring 2011. Details soon, though Kemado - the label who released their last album, currently lists them under "alumni".

The Bell House is a also a one-off show for Tim Fite. Fite's latest LP, Under The Table Tennis, is still available for free download.

The Goddamn Rattlesnake stream, and O'Death dates are below.

Yo La Tengo @ Pitchfork Fest 2009 (more by Joseph Xu)
YLT

What, it's Tuesday already? CMJ is here and I'm not really ready. Can we postpone for a week? No? All right. Here we go. Let's not go too crazy tonight (10/19), there's still four more days of this to come.

DAYTIME

Pretty much all the free daytime action happens on Ludlow St. today. Biggest among them is The Music Slut's party at Pianos, which features the dark synths of Brahms, the cheery synths of Hooray for Earth, plus Oberhofer (who play our day party on Friday), Young the Giant, Pearl and the Beard, and more. Party starts at noon, with the first band (Vancouver's Yukon Blonde) on at 1PM.

Moving down the street, Paper Garden Records has a showcase at The Living Room, with Denmark's Alcoholic Faith Mission, two bands from Toronto (Freedom or Death, Kidstreet), Emmanuel and the Fear, Motel Motel, Young Mammals and Saadi. First band is on at 1PM.

And then at Cake Shop, it's the Flower Booking/CapeShok party with Million Young, Sunglasses and Azalia Banks. This one starts a little later -- first band is on at 4PM.

And somewhere between day and night is the free New Zealand showcase at Le Poisson Rouge which starts at 5:45PM. I especially recommend you check out Lawrence Arabia, whose material ranges from delicate folk to ELO style orch-pop. Also playing:  electropop artist Zowie, Kids of 88, Street Chant, Ruby Frost and Electric Wire Hustle. Did I mention it's free? You do need to RSVP if you don't have a badge.

NIGHTTIME

Big ticket shows for tonight: Yo La Tengo play for free at the official CMJ kickoff show at Brooklyn Bowl with Screaming Females (who play our showcase Thursday night) and DOM (who play our Friday day party); Former Afgan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli is at Bowery Ballroom with Craig Wedren; and Jenny and Johnny, Wild Nothing, Times New Viking, Happy Birthday and La Sera (Kickball Katy of  Vivian Girls) at Irving Plaza;

If you wanna dance, you might want to head to Highline Ballroom for a night bands that sound like they could be on a Kitsune Maison compilation: the electro-soul sounds of Dan Black, Italo-disco lovers The Golden Filter, helium voiced Neon Hitch, Denver's The Chain Gang of 1974, and more.

UPDATE: "Chain Gang has dropped off tonight's show due to food poisoning. All other shows are set to occur as scheduled." (10/20 @ Maxwell's, 10/22 @ Cameo, 10/23 @ Santos)

For hip hop, it's Duck Down Music vs. Blacksmith at LPR.

And tonight at Cake Shop is your only chance this week to catch The Billy Nayer Show (11PM), the live band behind such cool sci-fi western musicals as The American Astronaut and last year's Stingray Sam. (Frontman Cory McAbee also directs and stars in them.) They're a one-of-a-kind, and playing as part of the Panache Booking showcase that also features Audacity, Dinowalrus, Onra, Janka Nabay, O'Death and Gary Wilson.

There's tons more shows, obviously. But that's what looks interesting to me. What are you going to see? Flyers and day party set times are below.

O'Death @ the 2010 Newport Folk Fest
Odeath

"The only way O'Death could be a better name for a Gothic folk-punk band would be if the band only performed on St. Patrick's Day. As it is, the New York group plays grippingly intense Americana, in the process bringing to mind the white-knuckle hellrides of 16 Horsepower. Here, O'Death plays songs from its latest album, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin, at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I."
[stream their Newport Folk Fest set @ NPR]
After some depressing setbacks, O'Death are back. You can stream their recent set from the Newport Folk Festival at NPR, and catch them live, tonight (8/20), at the Rock Shop.

Opening the Rock Shop show are The Goddamn Rattlesnake and Deer Tick associate Jonny Corndawg WHO IS ALSO playing Union Pool tonight with Lucero associates Glossary (who are on a short Northeast tour).

Jonny Corndawg also plays Knitting Factory (again) on October 8th with.... Wanda Jackson! It will be Wanda'a 2nd show at the new-ish Brooklyn venue. The queen of rock also played there in February. The Lustre Kings also play the October show, and tickets are on sale.

More pics of O'Death @ Newport, with some Corndawg videos and all dates below...

O'Death

On Friday night (7/10), Brooklyn Bowl became one of the newest concert venues in Williamsburg with Brooklyn band O'Death as the first of many bands to come grace its stage. Bowling and concerts don't necessarily go hand in hand (editor's note: yes they do! I think.), but the sound of the rowdy shirtless band and its fans easily overpowered the sound of the bowling balls crashing into the pins adjacent to the stage. With 16 lanes, multiple bars, wait service, and a booming sound system, this venue definitely gives other venues (in the 600-capacity range) ample competition.

As part of its green commitment, Brooklyn Bowl has implemented a number of eco-conscious designs to its building such as: a no bottle or can policy (you get beer in a glass!), recycled truck tires for the stage floor and the use of LED lighting for the stage which uses 90% less energy than the typical stage lighting. It's also one of the few buildings in Brooklyn that run on 100% wind-powered electricity.

Will it be a success? We hope so. Currently, there's not many upcoming shows announced aside from the 2-night Lebowski Fest. There's also a Clutch listening party scheduled to take place there on Tuesday (7/14) @ 6pm (Clutch's new album, 'Strange Cousins From The West,' is out this week on the band's own Weathermaker Music). The schedule will probably fill out soon though - at least partly with bands that have played Wetlands (which Bowl owner Peter Shapiro previously owned). Right now the venue is still in some state of 'soft launch'.

Brooklyn Bowl
Brooklyn Bowl

As you can see above, work at the new Brooklyn Bowl appears to be nearing completion...but it won't be ready in time for the O'Death show that was scheduled for the venue on Saturday, June 13th. That Northside Festival gig will instead be a day show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on North 6th in Williamsburg. Tickets are on sale, as are Northside Festival badges which will also get you into the show which you can hit before or after you enjoy a stroll down a vehicle-less Bedford Avenue.

This summer, O'Death continues their love affair with Les Claypool, with shows booked together in June and July. Earlier this year, O'Death opened part of Claypool's Oddity Faire tour, which visited NYC's Terminal 5 in March. O'Death opened for Claypool as recently as May 28th in Hilton Head, SC.

Sled Island 2008

The Sled Island Music and Arts Festival -- taking place at various venues in Calgary, Alberta from June 24 to June 27 -- is pleased to announce the initial line-up and the inclusion of Olympic Plaza as the main venue on Friday, June 26. This year will include over 200 bands performing at 23 venues plus art shows, film screenings, and a comedy component at the Sled Island Music and Arts Festival.

Sled Island 2009 will feature performances by the influential indie rock darlings The Breeders (featuring Kim Deal of the Pixies) making their first Calgary performance, NYC post-punk revivalists Liars bringing the noise, the legendary Canadian metal band Anvil the recent subjects of the critically acclaimed documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil and the garage rock assault of Tel Aviv's Monotonix known for their incredible live show. New Orleans-based musician and mad genius inventor of the 'drum buddy' Quintron & Ms. Pussycat will bring the party along with blood-soaked party rocker Andrew W.K. and Toronto-based electro tour-de-force Holy Fuck on the more 'offensive' front. Phil Elverum's (of The Microphones) latest moniker Mount Eerie will deliver a symbiotic balance of fuzz and folk matched by Owen Pallett's Final Fantasy surrealist violin stage performance. Calgary-based experimental icons Azeda Booth aim to mystify crowds along with their all-male psychedelic pop counterparts Women making their second festival appearance...The complete festival line-up and schedule will be revealed on June 1. [pr]

Festival passes are on sale now.

As previously reported, Colin Newman, vocalist and guitarist for Wire, will be guest curating this year's festival. Full lineup below...

O'Death in Berlin March '09
O'Death

We're pleased to announce that we'll be playing at the first annual Northside Music & Arts Festival in Brooklyn. Our show is at the brand new Brooklyn Bowl on June 13. We're really excited to be a part of this four-day celebration of New York City's independent music and arts scene. [O'Death website]
In addition to that date, the band will be going on tour across North America and Europe this summer. That includes opening dates for Les Claypool. The two played together on Claypool's Oddity Faire tour last March, visiting NYC's Terminal 5 on March 28th.

Brooklyn Bowl is not open yet, but you can check out their website.

Les Claypool

Aquarian: What have you planned for the New York show?

Les Claypool: We're going to fill it full of freaks. I guarantee it's going to be a memorable event. Whether you love or hate the music or the performers or whatever, it's going to be a very memorable event. [At] the bigger shows on the weekend, we've brought in all these extra characters, and I believe for the New York show, we're bringing in the Coney Island sideshow performers, so beyond what's already going to be on stage there's going to be plenty of things for the short attention span generation that is out there.

That's what Les Claypool said about his plans for the Terminal 5 show on Saturday, March 28th. As you can see above, he wasn't lying. The show, with openers Saul Williams, O'Death, and Secret Chiefs 3 (who are headed by ex-Mr Bungle/Faith No More guitarist and composer Trey Spruance), was the last of the "Oddity Faire" tour.

The tour coincided with the release of the Primus bassist's latest solo record, Of Fungi And Foe CD, out now on his own Prawn Song Records label.

More pictures from the show, including one of the conclusion of the sword swallowing act, below...

Continue reading "Les Claypool's Oddity Faire tour (Secret Chiefs 3, Saul Williams & freaks) @ Terminal 5 - pics"

Les ClaypoolPrimus's Les Claypool is calling "The Oddity Faire" a "A Mutated Mini Fest". You can also call it a tour with an interchanging set of openers that varies by date. In NYC the show is at Terminal 5 and the openers are Saul Williams, O'Death, and Secret Chief 3. The date is March 28th. Tickets are now on Am Ex presale, and go on regular sale on Friday.

Other openers for the tour are Mutaytor, Yard Dogs, and Devotchka. It's unfortunate that Devotchka is not also on the NYC date, but that makes sense since they can headline Terminal 5 by themselves and have their own show coming up at Webster Hall.

O'Death have also lined up a ton of other tour dates that don't include Les. They'll kick things off in Baltimore on January 29th and end up back in this NYC-area for a February 14th show at Maxwell's with Legendary Shack Shakers. Tickets are on sale. From there they go to Europe before meeting up with the Primus front-man back in the USA in March.

All dates below...

Wye Oak

Thanks to everyone who played and attended the free BrooklynVegan party at Pianos yesterday (10/23). We're working as fast as possible (on no sleep) to get CMJ coverage up (while still attending as much of CMJ as possible), but before it's too late I wanted to highlight at least one band who played the show. That's Wye Oak. It was the Baltimore duo's first show of this CMJ and they were the surprise hit of the whole day. Friendly Fires may have had the biggest draw, but Wye Oak is probably the band on the bill that gained the most new fans (not to mention the band with the most gear, especially on the gear to member ratio) (they make good use of it though). They played the second stage upstairs (usually reserved for singer-songwriters) while Sebastien Grainger was rockin' downstairs on the main stage and, not that it's a competition, but I think Wye Oak ended their set with the bigger crowd.

Check them out if you can. They're playing three more CMJ shows including TONIGHT (Friday, October 24th) at the Bell House on a great bill that includes their Merge labelmates The Rosebuds and Ladybug Transistor, and the great NYC band Crystal Stilts AND (the recently added) DJ JENS LEKMAN (no "singing" this time though). Wye Oak are also playing the Merge Records showcase at Mercury Lounge (again with the Rosebuds) before leaving town. In November they're touring Europe with Dr. Dog. In December they're back in NYC to play the Bowery Ballroom with O'Death. More pictures and all dates below...

New York's O'Death will release their new album, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skins on October 28th via Kemado Records, their new U.S. home. The album, which was written over a span of three years, was co-produced with Alex Newport (Two Gallants, the Locust). Since 2007's buzzed-about Head Home, the quintet, which contains vocalist/guitarist Greg Jamie, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Gabe Darling, fiddle player Bob Pycior, bassist Newman and drummer David Rogers-Berry have evolved the possessed americana-meets-gypsy-punk of recent years into a more urgent, unrelenting celebration of life, death and everything in between.
Catch O'Death for free tonight at Pier 54 in NYC. Kemado has been busy lately. They've also got the new Dungen and TK Webb coming out soon. All O'Death dates below...
