OFF! at BV-SXSW 2014 (more by Tim Griffin)
OFF!

The Keith Morris-fronted hardcore supergroup OFF! just got even more super. For their next tour, drummer Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless, Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes) is unfortunately sitting out, but the legendary Dale Crover of the Melvins will be filling in for him. The tour includes support from Bad Antics and Gay Kiss, and it hits NYC on August 22 at Europa. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (7/11) at 11:55 AM.

The band also just released a video from their record release show for Wasted Years. Watch that, with the list of tour dates, below...

OFF! @ Bowery Ballroom - 5/17/14
OFF!
OFF!

Before they even played a single note, the mood inside Bowery Ballroom was pretty unruly as cups of beer were projected at the stage as the punk vets in the supergroup OFF! took the stage. Singer Keith Morris, who used to front Black Flag and Circle Jerks, took his mic and said, "Don't throw your beer! Drink your beer! Don't be a fucking moron!" He then went on to introduce the band which features Dimitri Coats from Burning Brides, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and Rocket from the Crypt drummer Mario Rubalcaba, and as they started their engines Morris shouted, "...and we are OFF!" The band went into their high-octane old-school garage punk sound that has had fans around the world thrilled for bringing the sound that made them infamous in their respective previous band back to a new generation who have really only heard that type of sound on records.

As circle pits broke out, stage divers launched into the crowd-- including Coats, and fists were punching the air, OFF! turned Bowery Ballroom into another legendary Bowery venue, CBGB's which was up the street from where everyone was letting loose on Saturday night. With a mix of old and new school punks, it was a chance to relive the glory days of a genre that in its purest form was its rawest. [Officially A Yuppie]

Hardcore punk supergroup OFF! brought their tour to NYC over the weekend for a Bowery Ballroom show on Saturday (5/17). The tour is in support of their new album, Wasted Years, and included plenty off that, plus older favorites like "Black Thoughts" and "Jeffrey Lee Pierce." Opening the show were their similarly punk tourmates, NYC's Cerebral Ballzy and Santa Ana's NASA Space Universe whose singer spent the show on the floor. Pictures of the whole show are in this post.

They continue, with OFF!'s setlist, below...

In related news, the day-by-day lineup for Punk Rock Bowling -- which includes Descendents, Cock Sparrer Anti-Nowhere League, The Dwarves, OFF!, NOFX, Good Riddance, Against Me! and more -- was recently revealed as well. You can check that out, along with the list of Adicts dates and a video, below...

BrooklynVegan SXSW Friday Day Party - Red 7BrooklynVegan SXSW Friday Day Party - Red 7

Like the one the day before, the second of our three BrooklynVegan SXSW day parties happened on both stages of Red 7 on Friday (3/14). Outside, the show opened nicely with Columbus, OH indie rockers Connections, followed by intense garage rock trio The Blind Shake, whose members were all decked out in uniform with tight black zip-up jackets and shaved heads. Then came together PANGEA with more garage rock but more on the melodic/accessible side, and they were followed by the punky pop of Upset, who count ex-Vivian Girl Ali Koehler and ex-Hole drummer Patty Schemel as members. After them came a wild set from more veteran musicians in the Keith Morris-fronted hardcore supergroup OFF!, and they were followed by ex-members of Women making shouty, jammy post-punk in their new band Viet Cong. Then came more (but darker and backed by a drum machine) post-punk from Beth Israel, and finally the show wrapped up with a headlining set from Parquet Courts...

"I can't remember a better show in the last five years--maybe 10--than the one Parquet Courts put on at the Brooklyn Vegan day party. It all depends on the show, right? Sometimes you can be transformed by an arena show or knocked over by some random punk band in a shoebox. But this was seeing a band that is RIGHT NOW! They have 1.5 albums under their belt, they have no fat, they have no gimmicks, they just flat-out torched the landscape. This was it, this is what seeing live music is about, this show--THIS BAND--is why I love music so much. A jaw dropping show." [The Portland Mercury]

Meanwhile, inside things got off to an eccentric danceable start with Parisian band La Femme, who were part new wave, part surf rock, part ye-ye, and highly entertaining. (NYC: We're presenting their show this weekend at Glasslands.) It stayed in upbeat mode for psych rock trio The Entrance Band, but then calmed down a lot for the orchestral indie pop of Mutual Benefit. Tomas Barfod was supposed to go on next but had to cancel at the last minute, unfortunately, though once Classixx took the stage it returned to dance mode. Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys followed with a set that was partially solo, partially with accompaniment and fully entertaining, and then we got downtempo electronic pop from Jessy Lanza before inside stage closed with the gothy house pop of Toronto's Trust.

Shiner beer was on special and we gave away free Jameson, not to mention all the Veri organic soda that was on hand to keep you hydrated. We also let in 20 people each day who were taking advantage of Esurance's SXSW-wide #EsuranceAccess program.

Did you win a pair of Marshall Headphones? You may have if you tagged your Instagram with #BVMarshall (like that pink ball head thing did).

All the music we played between bands can be found on our Nokia MixRadio SXSW playlist. Nokia MixRadio were the ones in the pink tent outside all three days.

Indiegogo was there too. Maybe they fed you a free piece of pizza?

Special thanks to all of our bands and partners and sponsors for making this party possible. Pictures from Thursday HERE. Check out more pictures from the whole day Friday below (and a second set at BV Austin)...

OFF!'s Keith Morris @ Irving Plaza, 9/19/2013 (more by PSquared Photography)
(black) FLAG

If you're into video games, or have friends who are -- so basically, if you are living -- you've either played or heard someone talk about playing Grand Theft Auto V during the past week and change. The game, which dropped on September 17, is widely being hailed as a masterpiece, and it's certainly been commercially successful. GTAV earned $800 million in sales during its first 24 hours on the market and $1 billion during its first three days, which evidently makes it the fastest-selling piece of entertainment media in history. It's big enough that GTAV will be a major part of this year's New York Film Festival Convergance Program, with multiple panel discussions and events.

One of the reasons that the GTA series is so popular is because its world is so well fleshed out. You can have a pretty good time just driving around Los Santos listening to the in-game radio, which is frankly much better curated than most real-world radio. You can thank Keith Morris of OFF! and (black) FLAG (whose tour with T.S.O.L. and Cerebral Ballzy hit Irving Plaza last week) for that, among others. Morris not only curated one of GTAV's radio stations; his other band, OFF!, also contributed an exclusive song to the game. OFF! are currently gearing up to record a new LP, which should see an early 2014 release. We've got that new song streaming in this post.

Song stream below.

The Spits @ Irving Plaza - - 10/16/2012
The Spits

CMJ at Irving Plaza (where there are big shows every night this week) began Tuesday night with the touring combo of OFF!, The Spits and Double Negative. It was a night of angry-not-punk rock... From a recent Rolling Stone article:

"With part of the hardcore mentality there became this batch of rules," [OFF!'s Keith] Morris tells Rolling Stone. "If somebody says, 'Well, you're hardcore' or 'You're punk rock,' I'm not gonna argue with you - except I'm not any of that stuff. I'm 57 years old. I'm just angry, and I'm pissed off."
Though it continues:
"What we're doing now is kind of like a party," Morris says. "And we invited some of the bands that we believe are the best to be playing with us, to make this special, to make our party on wheels something that we want a lot of different people to come to."
The party on wheels continues TONIGHT IN NJ (for those who missed the Irving show because they were home watching the debate).

Check out more pictures from NYC, OFF!'s setlist included, below...

Foo Fighters Bob Mould
Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters headlined day 2 of the Deluna Fest in Florida (9/22) and while they've been no strangers to giant outdoor shows this summer (like Global Fest which happened this weekend in NYC), this was the only one where they sang happy birthday to Joan Jett who then joined them for "Bad Reputation." She did her own set earlier in the day. Additionally, Bob Mould came out for "Dear Rosemary" and Tom Petty's "Breakdown." Bob played Sugar's Copper Blue on day 3 (which he already did in Brooklyn).

In addition to Grohl & Co, Bad Brains also blessed day 2 (pics) as well as Brass-a-Holics, Saints of Valory, Mike Doughty, OFF!, Band of Horses (who also played Global Fest) and The Joy Formidable who will be touring (and playing NYC) and whose Deluna set photos are here.

BFF

After busting up the gang in 2000, snarky mid-'90s piano trio Ben Folds Five reunited this year with a new album on the way and a tour, which they're on now. The tour stops at Central Park Summerstage tonight (9/14), their first NYC show in 12 years. Tickets for tonight's show are still available. BFF will also return to the NYC area for a show at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre on October 9 with Kate Miller Heidke (tickets) and a couple days later they will play opening night of New York Comic Con on October 11. Tckets for that are still available too.

Ben Folds Five, best known for their ballad "Brick" back when people still held up lighters at shows (1997), have a new album, The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, which is their first since 1999 and is out next week (9/18). The record was funded via Pledgemusic and is a little mellower than the bouncy, fuzzy pop of their Clinton-era singles like "Underground" and "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" but his sense of humor seems intact. You can listen to tracks at SPIN, TeamCoco and Rolling Stone.

Ben Folds Five are also playing Florida's Deluna Fest which happens September 21 - 23 in Pensacola Beach, FL and also features Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Bob Mould doing Copper Blue, Diplo, Florence & the Machine, Band of Horses, and many more. Tickets for Deluna Fest are still available and full line-up is below.

A list of all Ben Folds Five dates, a few classic clips and that Deluna Fest lineup are below...

Refused @ Europa in Greenpoint
Refused

Soaked from head to toe, I walked out of Refused/Off! last night at Europa (7/18, brought to you by Scenic) with a smile on my face. Unlike their recent Terminal 5 shows, the Swedish band's last minute Europa appearance was a wild and overheated affair, more of what a hardcore show should be.

After the cancellation of the much larger Waterfront show due to rain, I knew to arrive early to Europa, so I got there around 7:45. The line was already stretched more than two blocks long, filled with many people who had paid to see the bands at the much larger Williamsburg Waterfront. The Europa show was first come, first served, free and all ages (Waterfront tickets are being refunded), and the venue only let in roughly 500 folks. They went down the line giving out tickets, and those who didnt get a ticket walked up and down the line looking to buy one ("I'll pay $100 for a ticket"). There were a lot of those people. The nearby police station seemed to empty on to the street, with cops standing on the corners surveying the crowd.

The doors opened around 8:30 and people started rolling in to the Greenpoint club. Hot as hell in there. Sweating. A lot.

After a long wait, OFF! played their set to a mostly cross-armed crowd with a few newbie-mosh-types attempting to start a pit. They ended up just bouncing off of each other while the borderline-comatose crowd looked on. It wouldnt be until Refused got on stage that the real mayhem started. More sweating.

After waiting in the venue for what seemed like an eternity (now, dripping), Dennis from Refused made his way to the front to start the set. The crowd got tighter around the stage. By the time the band started, the front was either moving in a wave-like motion, avoiding the mosh pit, or looking out for stagedivers. The band's set seemed similar or identical to their previous outings but with one very notable exception: John Joseph (of the Cro-Mags) arrived on the scene late in their set to perform Bad Brains' "Attitude" and Cro-Mags' "We Gotta Know". This was my highlight for sure, especially in light of the recent violence and the PMA message of the Bad Brains classic. You might remember that at Terminal 5 it was Lou from Sick of It All who came up and performed with Refused (and Sick of it All was also supposed to perform at the recent Webster Hall show that ended early). Not my favorite band, but a solid set from the Swedes. Though the prize of the night goes to the insane audience.

Oh, and during their set, Refused strangely made an onstage proclamation about their past and "still" status as a revolutionary band. Considering their anti-capitalist stances in the past, I think that is a bit more than over-reaching (I disagree entirely). They should probably avoid saying that entirely.

Nevertheless, I also think that Refused's big moment, which passed many years ago, deserves to be celebrated to the fullest. At Europa last night (their 2nd small Brooklyn show this year) show this year), it most certainly was. It was just a bummer that so many that had planned to see the band at Williamsburg Waterfront, not to mention Philly tonight, were left out.

Refused played Jimmy Fallon earlier that day. Video of "New Noise" and "The Shape of Punk to Come" from that appearance, along with pictures from Europa are below.

UPDATE: This show happened. HERE ARE THE PICTURES.

Refused

Not as many people will get to see them, but good news from Refused who report:

"Brooklyn, this is the best we can do. OFF! has secured Europa Club (98 Meserole Ave, Brooklyn) for us to play tonight. First come, first serve. Doors 9pm, OFF! at 10pm and we will play until Fallon comes on!"
The show was supposed to be at the much larger Williamsburg Waterfront but was cancelled due to rain. Refused are on Fallon tonight.

UPDATE: This show happened. HERE ARE THE PICTURES and Fallon video.

The Hot Chip show in Prospect Park is still happening in Prospect Park (though doors were pushed back to 7:30), and the afterparty for that is at Santos where the free, first come, first served JEFF the Brotherhood show is earlier.

Refused

Not surprisingly, Refused / OFF tonight at Williamsburg Park is, um, off. No word on a reschedule, but prepare for the inevitable "secret show" rumors on Twitter in 3.... 2.... 1... UPDATE: and here it is. Show is now at Europa!

At least you can catch Refused in their television debut tonight on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and refunds for the Brooklyn show are being offered.

Refused and OFF! also had their Philly Riot Fest show pulled out from under them. That was supposed to happen tomorrow.

Hopefully the Thursday show at Williamsburg Park, and the Riot Fest coming up there, fare better.

The outdoor show on the Intrepid is also cancelled.

You can go see JEFF the Brotherhood at Santos for free instead, or other stuff.

Maybe this isn't the most exciting start for the venue, but there are a lot of cool shows coming up, including Refused with Off! on Wednesday (7/18), a big outdoor edition of Eugene Mirman's "Pretty Good Friends" with "special guests" and OK GO on Thursday (7/19), Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and Antibalas on August 18 (FREE), Bob Mould playing Sugar's first two albums on September 7 (FREE), David Byrne & St. Vincent on September 29, Animal Collective on October 5 and more. All upcoming Williamsburg Park shows are listed below.

If you're a fan of Field Report (aka former Justin Vernon cohort Chris Porterfield) but would like to see him in a more intimate setting, he's also playing an early show at Mercury Lounge on Saturday (7/21). Tickets are still available and we're also giving away a pair. Details on how to enter are below.

Riot Fest

Uh Oh:

Riot Fest East 2012, scheduled for Thursday, July 19 at Festival Pier in Philadelphia, PA has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Refunds will be available at point of purchase. We are truly sorry for those of you who were planning on coming out. This one hurts, but, a rescheduled show is in the works. More information about the new date will be made available soon.
The smaller Riot Fest Brooklyn is still happening at Williamsburg Park which is also where Refused and Off! are playing one day before they were supposed to play Philly.

Speaking of Refused, they were also just announced on the lineup of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012.
