It'll Get Worse Before It Gets Better cover art
fi

Somewhere, there's a band named Invincible that's like, "Huh."

Fucking Invincible is the new project from fellas from Dropdead and Daughters. Surprise: they're loud. They play a type of ultra-aggressive core that loves tossing '90s-styled jud-jud breakdowns into the maelstrom. Their new album on Atomic Action! Records is called It'll Get Worse Before It Gets Better, which you can stream in full below. It rages in tight, minute-long packages. The songs never outstay their welcome, using a one-and-done approach for segment construction. That means It'll Get Worse Before It Gets Better is the kind of record you leave on repeat. It also means the title is kind of a lie. It's pretty good from the get-go.

Fucking Invincible will hit the road September for a string of dates that run through the eastern half of North America. That tour hits NYC on September 27 at the Acheron. Tickets and support slots will be announced soon. All dates are listed below.

They also just played Connecticut last night (7/20) with Oathbreaker and Cult Leader, the touring package that will hit the Acheron on Thursday (7/24) for a BrooklynVegan-presented show that includes Young and In the Way, Badr Vogu and Meek Is Murder. Tickets for that show are still available and we're also giving away a pair. Details on how to enter to win, with the Fucking Invincible LP stream and list of dates, below.

YAITW making a bloody mess (via @kc_xiii)
YAITW

Charlotte black n' crust collective Young and in the Way went full The Shining on Sunday, "spraying" pig's blood during the Empire Tattoo showcase at Lexington Avenue Brewery in Asheville, North Carolina. This caused the venue to shut down and call the Buncombe County Health Department to assess the damage. Lexington Avenue Brewery general manager Benjy Greene said (via WLOS):

After a private music event in our back room, we voluntarily closed and contacted the Buncombe County Health department to advise us the best cleanup procedure for our back room.
Young and in the Way have yet to issue a statement, though Empire Tattoo have apologized for the event:
Though the actions and result of Sunday nights show were out of our hands we are sorry another local business is suffering. We have been in contact with Buncombe County health inspector over the matter and are aware that the "contamination" was confined to the back room of the LAB. We were also made aware by the health inspector that LAB was given "go ahead" to re open as soon as they wished without re inspection. Our mission for this party was to celebrate our business and customers with another local business. We hope for everyones sake we can all move forward from this in a positive manner. We appreciate everyones support on this matter.
Lexington Avenue Brewery hopes it can have the stage cleaned by Saturday for the David Bowie cover band Wham Bam Bowie Band. Godspeed, cleaning crew. Remember, we can be heroes.

Young and in the Way will be in NYC opening the BV-presented stop of the Oathbreaker and Cult Leader tour which happens July 24 at Acheron with Badr Vogu and the recently-added Meek Is Murder. Tickets are still available and the show is now 18+ (rather than 21+). Luckily, Brooklyn doesn't have any history with bands wielding pig's blood. Nope. None.

You can check out a local news report -- which might as well be presented by Perd Hapley -- regarding the incident, below...

Oathbreaker
Oathbreaker

Belgium melodic hardcore/screamo band Oathbreaker put out their excellent sophomore album, Eros|Anteros, last year via Deathwish but still haven't gotten a chance to come to North American in support of it. We found out that would finally change when the band was announced for Cambridge's Deathwish Fest (7/22-23) and we're now happy to announce they'll be going on a tour with labelmates Cult Leader (aka 3/4 of Gaza who basically pick up where Gaza left off) which kicks off right after that festival.

The tour begins in CT on 7/20, hits Long Island's Amityville Music Hall on 7/21 (tickets), and then after Deathwish Fest, comes to NYC for a BrooklynVegan-presented show on July 24 at The Acheron with another Deathwish band, North Carolina's metallic hardcore rippers Young and in the Way (who put out their new When Life Comes to Death LP last week), and Oakland's sludgy Badr Vogu. Tickets for that show go on sale today (6/4) at 1 PM. Show flyer, list of all tour dates, and streams from all four bands on the Acheron show, below...

Converge at Saint Vitus, May 2013 (more by Lukas Hodge)

Deathwish Inc.'s inaugural Deathwish Fest announced that it will be switching venues, moving down the street from the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA to Cambridge go-to The Middle East Downstairs, a bigger venue that allows for the two-day event to be all ages. The hardcore/metal fest is still happening on July 22-23, and tickets already purchased will be honored at The Middle East. With the move comes fifty more tickets for each day and, unfortunately, Code Orange Kids' cancellation.

Filling the hole in the lineup on the fest's second day are Shipwreck AD and Coliseum (who just rejoined Deathwish), while Philadelphia's Blacklisted (whose singer George Hirsch's solo project Harm Wulf was already playing day two) will be added to day one for good measure. Both night's are headlined by Converge (whose Jake Bannon runs Deathwish) and Trap Them, so it should be a wild time whether you make it to one or both nights. Head below to see full lineups, which also include Modern Life Is War, Doomriders, Self Defense Family and more. Tickets go back on sale Wednesday (5/14) at noon.

Blacklisted also play NYC with Rival Mob in June and This Is Hardcore in Philly right after Deathwish Fest.

Updated Deathwish Fest lineup below...

Converge at Saint Vitus Bar, 2013 (more by Lukas Hodge)

Deathwish Inc. -- Jake Bannon of Converge's increasingly influential record label -- are following up what I can only imagine was their most lucrative year of operation to date (they released Deafheaven's Sunbather) with their first-ever standalone music festival. Creatively entitled Deathwish Fest, the bash will take place on July 22 and 23 at the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA. Both nights will be headlined by Converge (no surprise there) and Trap Them, who are preparing to release their first new album since 2011's Darker Handcraft. Both bands are restricting their 2014 Boston-area appearances to this fest. Some other notables include Modern Life Is War, Code Orange Kids, & Doomriders on 7/22 and Oathbreaker & Cult Leader (who will evidently be touring together as well; keep an eye out for updates here).

Tickets for individual days go on sale this Friday (4/11) at noonwith an AmEx presale beginning Wednesday (4/9) at noon. Two-day passes are $50 and if that math doesn't make sense to you, it's because you're not taking the Jake Bannon limited-run silkscreen print that comes with the two-day pass into account. Fans of wings, skulls, and splatter textures rejoice! Check out the full fest lineup below.

oathbreaker

Belgium is a hotbed for a certain type of hardcore sound, embodied in bands like Rise & Fall, Amenra and others. Oathbreaker is another band that flirts with that particular oppressive-hardcore sound, yet this Belgian crew also dabbles in epic screamo (ala Envy) on their new LP Eros|Anteros due via Deathwish on August 20. Sure, black metal, post-rock, and punk/metal riffs are all present, but the band's melodicism also adds a different spin, making tracks like "Condor Tongue" that much more interesting.

Stream "Condor Tongue," alongside the band's tour schedule (no dates in the US), below.

Amenra
Belgian atmospheric sludge crew Amenra are currently streaming their slow-burning Mass V in full. Pensive, dark, yet burning brightly like a flame to magnesium, check out the record in its entirety below.

Amenra recently added a London show with Cult of Luna (who have a new album coming) on January 22nd. Still no word on an NYC date, but we'll let you know if that changes. All other dates and the album stream are below.

Amenra

Belgian favorites Amenra have loose ties to bands like Oathbreaker, Integrity, Rise & Fall and others, and use elements from those bands along with Acme, Neurosis, and post-rock in their unique approach to post-hardcore/sludge. After a few mostly-European releases, the band is welcoming their new LP Mass V, which will be their debut LP for Neurot Recordings. The long-player, recorded by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Eyehategod, Swans), will hit via the label on November 27. Stream the first song from that LP, "Dearborn and Buried," below.

So far no, US dates have been scheduled for Amenra, but those in the EU can catch them at the dates below.

Aaron with Defeatist at their last show (more by BBG)
Aaron of Defeatist

I previously posted my highlights of 2011 but my opinion is obviously just one of many. To try and get a better feel for the year, we cornered some of our favorite artists and heavy music industry friends to ask them about 2011 in music, art, and memories. We have so many responses that we needed to split it into three posts. Here is the first. Head below to hear from members of Noisear, Monarch!, Mammoth Grinder, Pulling Teeth, Sulaco, Bloodiest, and many more...

Black Cobra at The Studio at Webster Hall (more by BBG)
Black Cobra

In addition to their tour with Kyuss Lives! and The Sword that includes 12/9 at the Paramount in Long Island and 12/10 at the Wellmont Theatre in NJ, Black Cobra have added a round of dates that include Saint Vitus (the venue) on 12/11 with Zoroaster and The Body. Tickets are on sale. The full slate of dates are below. Black Cobra recently released Invernal.

France's Warning//Warning are touring the US and will hit Acheron on 11/20 with Nomad and more TBA. Check out a song from the bands new record There's Nothing Left above and look for them on the road at the dates below.

Saint Vitus (the band) have signed to Season of Mist and will release a new album.

Relapse signed the great New Zealand band Ulcerate. If you havent heard of them, make sure to check out their LP Destroyers of All which dropped this year, not to mention their highly recommended 2009 album Everything is Fire. It's great to see this band's audience growing in the US.

It seems that Seein Red/Larm cancelled their Chaos in Tejas 2011 appearance for a damn good reason... hearing damage. And now Seein Red have called it quits! R.I.P. Seein Red, I posted a live video in tribute below.

That video, a stream of the Pallbearer demo, a stream of a new Rise & Fall song, a new Pulling Teeth video, a new Oathbreaker video, and a live Monarch! video is below along with more suggested NYC shows...

Jucifer at Union Pool (more by Samantha Marble)
Jucifer

Jucifer will hit the road for a string of tour dates that will include NYC at Union Pool on July 15th. There they'll intersect with a Mocking Bird tour with a third band still to come. $10 gets you in.

Also in the coming couple weeks is Bongripper! The tour will be their first trek through the NYC area, and they'll play two nights of shows... July 10th at Acheron with Wizardry and July 11th at Lit Lounge with Bezoar. Stream some awesome indtrumental doom from the band below, and head out to the shows!

Yob and Dark Castle are on the road.

Cannabis Corpse, who have a new album, has been added to the previously discussed Sourvein show.

Northless, who put out the killer Clandestine Abuse, has added an NYC show at Lit Lounge on August 15th as part of an East Coast tour.

The now-on-Matador Ceremony play 538 Johnson tonight (7/1). Cro-Mags are at Bowery Ballroom with Wisdom in Chains, Death Threat, and Razorblade Handgrenade.

I am definitely feeling this new Oathbreaker LP, Mælstrøm which is out NOW via Deathwish and streaming below in full. The Belgium band features members of Amenra, and the LP was recorded by none other than Kurt Ballou. Highly reccomended!

The stream, more suggested NYC shows and some video below.
