"I have always been very passionate about Politics and Sports and this time it got the Best or Worst of me. The thought of the Leaders of both Parties Jukin and High Fiven on a Golf course, while so many Families are Struggling to get by simply made me Boil over and make a Dumb statement and I am very Sorry if it Offended anyone. I would like to Thank all my supporters. This was Not written by some Publicist." -- Hank Williams JrTo that Gawker says, "You don't say, Hank."

"Having lived here for over twenty years, it is an unimaginable honor to be invited to the White House by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, to an event celebrating Jewish Americans, and to be counted among them. Nothing in the world could make us feel more accepted and at home!"

"Like many of you who live in New Jersey, I've been following the progress of the marriage-equality legislation currently being considered in Trenton. I've long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that, "The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is -- a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law." I couldn't agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now." - Bruce SpringsteenBruuuuuuuce! New Jersey legislature was supposed to vote on the issue Thursday, but that vote was controversially cancelled last night. The New York Senate disappointingly rejected a marriage bill for same sex couples earlier this month. For more on this issue, check out the Human Rights Campaign website.

""Saturday Night Live" grappled with real life--President Obama's surprise win of the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday--as cast member Fred Armisen played the president as the luckiest man in the world--who is not George Bush.Regina Spektor was the musical guest on Saturday. Armisen as Obama: "This came without warning, I didn't even get a call as due to the time difference in Norway, the Nobel people didn't want to wake me up. I wish they had, I could have said to Hillary Clinton, 'Hey, remember that 3 a.m. call you were so worried about? It happened. Nobel Peace Prize." [Sun Times]
Kanye @ SXSW 2009 (more by Faith-Ann Young)
Critics may have hated it, but Monday's premiere of "The Jay Leno Show" got a warm reception from viewers. That widespread scorn even reached President Obama who was taped calling Kanye West a jackass.
Thanks in part to a newsworthy appearance from rapper Kanye West -- who drew widespread scorn for his behavior during the MTV Video Music Awards the previous night -- the former "Tonight Show" host's 10 p.m. comedy-variety show drew a surprisingly large crowd of 18.4 million total viewers, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. That's more than three times what he averaged on "The Tonight Show."
Among the key demographic of viewers aged 18 to 49, "Leno" scored a 5.3 rating/14 share, easily the night's top-rated program. It was NBC's most-watched program in the time period since last year's Summer Olympics. [LA Times]
Meanwhile, as Kanye promised a few weeks ago, he's going out on tour with Lady Gaga who was also a big star at the VMAs. The'Fame Kills' tour runs from November into January 2010, and includes two (for now?) NYC-area shows: December 22 at the Izod Center and January 3 at Nassau Coliseum. Ticket info TBA. All tour dates, and videos from the Leno show, are below...
Tift Merritt (by Chris LaPutt)
Singer-songwriter Tift Merritt has summer shows scheduled up through August 9th, when she plays the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. Those dates also include a stop at the Newport Folk Festival on August 1st.
Before those though, Merritt will perform in NYC tonight (July 1st) at a free show with Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion. The gig was supposed to happen at Nelson A. Rockefeller Park, but...
"Due to a threat of inclement weather, tonight's Tift Merritt/Sarah Lee Guthrie/Johnny Irion show has been moved to Stuyvesant High School at 345 Chambers St. Start time is still 7pm. Space is limited, so the first come, first served system will be in effect. "The Jay Reatard show, also scheduled outdoors tonight, is still on (as far as we know), and the Celebrate Brooklyn gig with MGMT, Kuroma and Suckers at the Prospect Park Bandshell is -- as always (allegedly) -- rain or shine.
Tift Merritt's 2005 Lost Highway release, Tambourine, earned her a Grammy nomination for the Best Country Album of the Year. Her newsest album, recorded live and acoustic, is called Buckingham Solo. It came out earlier this year, and is available through Fantasy Records and on iTunes. She discussed that record and played live on WNRN in April. That, with all tour dates, is below...
Animal rescuers voiced disappointment on Monday that President Barack Obama and his family chose a purebred dog from a breeder over rescuing an unwanted animal from a shelter. Not officially announced, but definitely officially leaked, Dr. Dog and Phosphorescent (and a 3rd band TBA) will be playing this year's big, free, "indie" show at the Prospect Park Bandshell on June 27th. David Byrne kicks off the Celebrate Brooklyn season at the same venue on June 8th. All tour dates below....
Bo, the first family's new Portuguese Water Dog, is six-month-old puppy who was returned to his Texas breeder by a previous owner.
"I think all of us who work trying to place homeless animals had hoped that they would choose a shelter dog," said Steve Gruber, spokesman for the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals in New York City.
"His choosing to go to a breeder is a disappointment. Choosing a shelter dog, that would have been a really powerful message to the American people," he said.
The Portuguese Water Dog was chosen in part because the breed is hypoallergenic and Malia Obama has allergies. [Reuters]

In March the band will be joining up with Baaba Maal and Oliver Mtukudzi on the fifth installment of the prestigious African Soul Rebels tour in the UK. BOSTON -- A street artist famous for his red, white and blue "Hope" posters of President Obama has been arrested on warrants accusing him of tagging property with graffiti, police said Saturday. This comes less than a week after the Associated Press sent their lawyers after Shepard for Obama-image copyright infringement.
Two warrants were issued for Fairey on Jan. 24 after police determined he'd tagged property in two locations with graffiti based on the Andre the Giant street art campaign from his early career, Officer James Kenneally said. One of the locations was the railroad trestle by the landmark Boston University bridge over the Charles River, police said.
Fairey, 38, of Los Angeles, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Brighton District Court, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney. Wark said Fairey would also be arraigned on a default warrant related to a separate graffiti case in the Roxbury section of Boston. [Huffington Post]
This not the first time Shepard has been arrested - not even close. That's one of many subjects he talks about in his interview with Henry Rollins that you can watch in the videos below...
DOWNLOAD: Etta James talks smack about Beyonce (MP3)
Etta James @ BB King's in 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
This is not a joke: 71-year-old Etta James actually threatened to beat the crap out of Beyoncé Knowles -- and it's caught all on tape!TMZ later pointed out that the song is not even an Etta James song. She covers it too. The Chicago Sun Times says that "both Beyonce and President and Mrs. Obama were stunned by music legend Etta James' strong verbal whiplashing." Etta James told the Daily News she was just trying to get a laugh and meant no harm. Etta is definitely known for her between song banter at her live shows. Speaking of which...
The war is all over Etta's song, "At Last " -- Beyoncé sang the tune at Obama's 1st Inauguration Ball on Jan. 20th ... but last week at a concert in Seattle, James was still pissed.
While on stage, Etta told the crowd, "Your President, the one with the big ears ... he had that woman singing my song. She gone get her ass whipped."
She continued, "The great Beyoncé ... I can't stand Beyoncé," according to audio from Crown City Media.
Ironically Etta didn't kick up this sorta fuss when Beyoncé portrayed her in "Cadillac Records." [TMZ]
Etta James returns to B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in NYC for three shows in May. Tickets are on sale.
Etta is also one of many artists who will be Jazz Fest in New Orleans this year...
American rock superstars Bon Jovi have been added to the already star-studded music lineup of the 40th anniversary New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Presented by Shell, organizers announced today. Making their first-ever Jazz Fest appearance, Bon Jovi will perform on Saturday, May 2. The 2009 Jazz Fest is scheduled for April 24-26 & April 30-May 3 at the Fair Grounds Race Course.Etta James also has a show scheduled in Atlantic City. All tour dates below...
Bon Jovi joins Wynton Marsalis, Dave Matthews Band, James Taylor, Sugarland, Joe Cocker, Ben Harper, Tony Bennett, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kings of Leon, Neville Brothers, Wilco, Bonnie Raitt, Allen Toussaint, The O'Jays, Erykah Badu, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Dr. John, Etta James plus hundreds of others previously announced to appear at the historic edition of the Festival.
On buttons, posters and Web sites, the image was everywhere during last year's presidential campaign: A pensive Barack Obama looking upward, as if to the future, splashed in a Warholesque red, white and blue and underlined with the caption HOPE.In related news, Shepard is appearing at Coachella, he did some work for N.A.S.A., he made a Bad Brains poster, and he recently appeared on the Charlie Rose show. Video below...
Designed by Shepard Fairey, a Los-Angeles based street artist, the image has led to sales of hundreds of thousands of posters and stickers, has become so much in demand that copies signed by Fairey have been purchased for thousands of dollars on eBay.
The image, Fairey has acknowledged, is based on an Associated Press photograph, taken in April 2006 by Manny Garcia on assignment for the AP at the National Press Club in Washington.
The AP says it owns the copyright, and wants credit and compensation. Fairey disagrees. [Yahoo News]
Owsley Stanley (born Augustus Owsley Stanley III, January 19, 1935) also known as The Bear, was an underground LSD chemist, the first to produce large quantities of pure LSD.The Dead are playing some shows in April and May. That includes Nassau Coliseum and Madison Square Garden. Tickets go on sale at 10AM.
His total production is estimated at around half a kilogram of LSD, or roughly 5 million 100-microgram "trips" of normal potency, although accounts vary widely. The widespread and low-cost (often given away free) availability of Stanley's high-quality LSD in the San Francisco area in the mid-1960s may have been crucial for the emergence of the hippie movement during the Summer of Love in the Haight-Ashbury area, which one historian of that movement, Charles Perry, has described as "one big LSD party." Stanley was also an accomplished sound engineer, and the longtime soundman for seminal psychedelic rock band the Grateful Dead; the band's well-known "dancing bear" icon derives from his nickname. Millions of viewers heard a recording of the dulcet tones played by a celebrated quartet of musicians at President Barack Obama's inauguration rather than the notes the group actually played. That may also explain why Yo Yo was using his normal cello instead of the high-tech, carbon-fiber one the NY Times reported he would be using.
Carole Florman, a spokeswoman for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, says the weather was too cold for the instruments to stay in tune. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Izhak Perlman, pianist Gabriella Montero and clarinetist Anthony McGill made the decision on Inauguration Day Tuesday to use an audio tape of their performance that they had laid down two days earlier.
Florman says the musicians "very insistant on playing live until it became clear that it would be too cold," making it impossible for the instruments to hold tune. People sitting near them could hear the musicians play, but their instruments were not amplified. [AP]

Excited about a Fucked Up/Vivian Girls reunion after their October Market Hotel romp, I showed up at the venue just as Vivian Girls were starting...and just in time to find the show filled to capacity. Making the best of the night, I headed to Goodbye Blue Monday for a couple beers while a banjo-playing Texan and a keys-bass-and-drums trio ("sound like the Dresden Dolls") serenaded.
After two half-quarts of Ballantine, I decided to try my luck again, this time finding the doors reopened and Pissed Jeans finishing up their set to a still very full room.
Fucked Up opened with their quintessential opener - the searing "Son the Father." Early on guitarist Gulag a.k.a. Josh Zucker could be heard tossing off some Ginn-esque noodling into the guitar-rich mix. Pink Eyes a.k.a. Damian Abraham reminisced somewhat fondly of an incident the night before in Boston involving himself and an overhead pipe that ended up costing the band their guarantee for the night.
The set was equal parts old and new albums - from the sing-along chorus of "Invisible Leader" to the ultra-ridiculous verses of "Black Albino Bones" that ended up only half sung as Pink Eyes caught his breath and let the crowd take over.
Speaking of the crowd: a seemingly inexhaustible supply of audience members climbed, as if from a clown car, toward the stage for a never ending cycle of stage dives, many of which played out like a game of King of the Hill on Abraham's shoulders and Half Dome-shaped forehead. As is customary, cameras illuminated the stage with blinding bursts of blue and yellow light throughout, casting Abraham's shaved head in eerie relief to the shadowy backdrop of duct tape and mattresses. At shows like this it's always interesting to see how the photographers and the fans get along, one onstage shielding their thousand dollar cameras and the other throwing themselves onto each other and the floor of the venue, all within inches of the band.
During "Crusades," power to the bass and other instruments cut out - which led to a few a capella numbers in between to kill time (one or two of the covers that kept getting shouted out?). When the band came back, the set closed out strong around 1am - to a crowd that seemed mostly ready to get out and wake up for their first Obama A.D. commute.

...this was the Obama Staff Ball - the final official event put on by the Presidential Inauguration Committee. Arcade Fire and Jay-Z preformed. The actor Kal Penn, who everyone in the crowd knew as 'Kumar' took the stage. He was a surrogate for the campaign so he spent his time on stage outing by name all the staffers who 'tried to kill him' by texting while driving through snowbanks. The culmination of my past six months of work on the Obama campaign resulted in an amazing night. The Obama Staff Ball, which was also the last official Inaugural event, was held last night (1/21) at the DC Armory. The crowd of about 4,000 people included Obama staff and their lucky 'plus ones'. There was an inspiring speech by President Obama and musical performances by both Arcade Fire and Jay-Z. Frankly, I could not ask for a better ending to my campaign experience. It was especially humbling to hear Win Butler constantly thank us for all the hard work we put into the campaign, telling us they were especially honored to have been asked to play this event. I will not bore you with the details of my life on the campaign, but suffice to say it has been the most memorable experience of my life. It's an experience that cannot be matched and we are reminded that we are in a sort of limbo everyday now that it's all over. As Win humorously remarked in the middle of the concert, "This is the funnest party I've been to for people who have all just lost their jobs".
Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife Jill made an appearance and then President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage. The new president said something to the effect of,"You guys are great." To which someone next to us said,"Hire me!" Hm. Seems to be a theme developing. Free beer dude. [Mediabistro]
By the time Jay-Z came on, I was mostly too busy having fun to remember I had a camera, so he's not in many pictures. Check out all of them, and Arcade Fire's setlist, below...
So how lucky it is to be one of the staffers working for President Barack Obama over these past two years?Stay tuned for full coverage of this event from our very own Obama/BV staffer Bao Nguyen (now you know why there haven't been many pictures taken by Bao on this website over the past year). A few minutes ago Bao texted that Arcade Fire was covering their friend Bruce Springsteen's song "Born in the USA".
Forget the fact that you worked for a presidential candidate who won (most don't). Or that you probably got tickets to join 1.5 million people at the Inauguration. Or that you got a 50 percent discount on $150 Inaugural Ball tickets. Or that you might have moved into a desk in the West Wing of the White House today.
It gets even better. Word out today is that Arcade Fire, the super-popular Indie rock group, has come to Washington to play a private party for Mr. Obama's staff members at The Armory. (Yep, hard to believe, there's going to be ANOTHER party celebrating Mr. Obama's election). Jay-Z is also performing. [NY Times]
Tonight is at least the third time Jay-Z performed during his visit to DC for Obama.
Kanye West also managed to get in on the festivities.

"I WENT TO THE AZIZ GLOW IN THE DARK TOUR AND IT WAS AMAZIIIING!!! OH AND I EVEN GOT TO MEET HIM!!!!" [Kanye West]That's awesome that Kanye got to meet Aziz. I wonder if he got to meet Obama last night when he played at one of his many inauguration parties...
Opening the show from the Hilton Washington, the night's host, Sway, reminded everyone that after what was sure to be an exhausting first day, it was time to celebrate President Barack Obama's historic inauguration.Aziz Ansari's Glow in the Dark tour came through NYC earlier this month. He played four shows at Comix. Before the shows, Aziz was telling Gothamist about how much he loves to read Kanye West's blog, so he is surely pretty excited about the post.
Kanye West kicked off the show with a medley of hits like "Touch the Sky," "Stronger" and "Good Life." "Let's make some noise for our new president, Obama," he told the crowd. "It feels so good to be standing here. My mama would be so proud to see her baby boy with the #1 song in the country and our new African-American president."
Later in the night, he joked, "I still can't believe it. I feel like I'm in the future -- first iPods, now this!"
All Kanye-related accolades aside, the night really belonged to President Barack Obama, who dazzled the 7,000 party goers with a heartfelt speech about how thankful he is for the work the young people put in to get him elected. [MTV]
Aziz's still-untitled new TV show with Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones premiers on NBC on Thursday, April 9th.

Itzahk Perlman, left, talks with cellist Yo-Yo Ma @ rehearsal
When the cellist Yo-Yo Ma takes to the inaugural stage on Tuesday [he is on that stage as I type this], the instrument he will have may take music enthusiasts by surprise. Black, with a single-piece body, neck and peg box, and with no scroll at the top, the cello is a high-tech carbon-fiber instrument designed to withstand the cold.UPDATE: It appears he didn't need to use the new cello.
Created by Luis Leguia and his Massachusetts-based company, Luis and Clark, the cello is unaffected by temperature and humidity, which can crack or split the delicate antique instruments that professionals usually use. Mr. Ma plans to play his Luis and Clark cello if the weather warrants, said his manager, Mary Pat Buerkle. His other cello, a 1733 Montagnana from Venice, is worth more than $2 million. Mr. Ma will be playing a score by John Williams with Itzhak Perlman on violin, Gabriela Montero on piano and Anthony McGill on clarinet. Mr. Perlman could not be reached for comment. [NY Times]
Obama is now the president.
Ted Leo @ the Big Shoulders Ball @ the Black Cat in DC - Jan 19, 2009 (sara.h)
"Last night I went to the Big Shoulders Ball at the Black Cat. The show was tons of fun and without all the pomp and cheese cubes. The ball was "thrift store formal." And it was a benefit too. Highlights: Ted Leo covering Pete Seeger and Curtis Mayfield. Andrew Bird's wondrous violin plucking that he looped and looped. Tortoise finding a rhythm and sticking to it. Ken Vandermark's tribute to Sun Ra. And Honeyboy Edwards showing how the blues used to be played." [Washington City Paper]In addition to being Obama's Inauguration, today is also the release day for Andrew Bird's new album. All Andrew Bird dates HERE.
Obama is scheduled to take his oath of office at noon today (though they just said on TV that they might be running a little late). Aretha Franklin will sing "My Country Tis of Thee" shortly.
