No sooner does British/Sri Lankan rap goddess M.I.A. announce her engagement to WMG head Edgar Bronfman's son, rock guitarist Benjamin Brewer, then she reportedly collects $100k for a performance at an MTV Movie Awards after-party in West Hollywood sponsored by Target and Converse One Star. After the half-hour performance, M.I.A. (real name Maya Arulpragasam) jumped on top of a photo booth and told the audience how much she'd be making. "I'm going to use it to build schools in Liberia," said the politically active hip-hop performer. "It costs $52,000 to build a school for 1,000." The show wrapped up with the performer inviting women onstage to dance to "Paper Planes," including Jessica Szohr, Jessica Stroup and Rumer Willis. What, no Lindsay Lohan? Ahhh, the rich and famous in Hollywood.$250 tickets are still available for the show M.I.A. is playing at MoMA on on June 10th. "The evening will also feature a DJ performance by 'Special Disco Version' featuring James Murphy and Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem." That's at least one more school right there.

DOWNLOAD: Extra Golden - Obama (MP3)
Extra Golden is a band that started as an inter-continental collaboration between Kenyan and American musicians. The music they've developed over two albums is of a style all their own, an innovative combination of east African benga guitar pop and American . This will be the band's second US tour, and their first time visiting much of the country, including the south and west coast. Their latest album Hera Ma Nono was released last fall...Extra Golden are playing two NYC shows this summer. The first is the annual African Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell on August 3rd with Daby Toure and many others. That's free The second is 17 days later, also free, is sponsored by WFMU, and will take place at Lincoln Center with Either Orchestra and The Ex...
When WFMU was first presented with the ability to put on some free NYC concerts via the New York State Music Fund grant, the obvious first notion was "who would we like to see in NYC that has never played before?" So we wound up the ball and sent the pitch over to Lincoln Center's Bill Bragin: how about Holland's greatest punk exports the Ex coming over (which they have in the past on many occasions), but this time bringing over some of their great international musician friends? The ones only Europe usually gets to see (or Ethiopia, if you happen to be there when the Ex make their fabled stops). We passed contacts to Lincoln Center, Terrie Ex got in touch with his fellow travelers, and then the ball was knocked outta the park in a severe way. The result? Lincoln Center's Out of Doors series in collaboration with WFMU's grant giving you all the chance to see the US debut of a major international collaboration for free at Lincoln Center/Damrosch Park Bandshell on West 62nd Street at Amsterdam in Manhattan, Wednesday, August 20th from 6-10 PM. Yes, free. No advance ticketing. On the bill:. All Extra Golden tour dates below....
The Ex with Gétatchèw Mèkurya (renowned Ethiopian saxophone legend), and if that weren't enough, Lincoln Center added two amazing East African/American collaborations to the bill: Either/Orchestra with Mahmoud Ahmed and Alèmayèhu Eshèté, plus Extra Golden. [WFMU]

Crystal Castles, The Cool Kids, and El-P will be performing at NYU next Thursday, April 3. Tickets are $12 for NYU students & $15 for the general public and all proceeds will go to benefit the non-profit organization Chill.Crystal Castles just played Mercury Lounge and Studio B.

Win Butler, Will Butler, Regine Chassagne and Jeremy Gara of the Arcade Fire will be playing a free concert on Sunday, March 2nd at Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio in support of Barack Obama's bid for the Democratic nomination. The show is at 7 p.m., first come first serve. This is not the first time Arcade Fire has made their choice of candidate known.
They will also be playing a free show at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland on Monday, March 3rd. Doors are at 7 p.m., and the show is 18 and over, first come first serve.
Though the Arcade Fire is known as a Canadian band, Win and Will were born and raised in the U.S. (and spent their formative years in Texas), Regine is a dual citizen whose dad served in Vietnam, and Jeremy Gara is just a really nice Canadian who likes playing music and is sick of explaining to Americans what universal health care means.
Will.i.am also came out with another video for Obama. That and one by the Arcade Fire below...
With Nathan Larson also on the bill Monday night, rumors are swirling about another Shudder to Think impromptu reunion. What are the odds on that? And in case you missed it, a video from the Bowery show is below....
The odds are 99.999999 %. It looks like me, Nathan and Kevin March, who was our last drummer, are going to do some Shudder to Think songs. Stuart Hill, our bass player, is not going to do it; I think he has officially hung up his spurs. But we'll try him again in a few months if we keep doing shows. But we're not advertising this show as Shudder to Think because we're wading one toe at a time back into that ocean. I mean, we're very happy with where our friendships are; the music still feels fresh. We played a show a few months ago and it was great; it was very familial and we want to continue in that spirit and see where it takes us. But this seems like a great occasion to play some Shudder to Think songs because we are all pretty much on board about Obama and it gives it a little extra purpose and excitement.[Gothamist spoke to Craig right before the show about that and other stuff]
DOWNLOAD: She & Him - Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? (MP3)
She & Him is a story of musical serendipity: Two artists, each renowned in their own creative fields, meet and recognize a certain shared nostalgia. The result is destined to be one of the musical highlights of the year. She and Him currently have two scheduled shows coming up. One at Noise Pop in San Francisco, and at least one during SXSW in Austin the Merge Records showcase). The She & Him record, Volume One, is out on Merge March 18th.
Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward first met to record a version of Richard and Linda Thompson's "When I Get To The Border" for a movie soundtrack. Immediately struck by one another's talents and finding an instant rapport, Zooey let slip that she wrote her own songs which she recorded alone at home on her computer. Somewhat shy about anyone hearing these musical morsels she eventually sent the demos to Matt who was instantly impressed. They soon reconvened at his Portland studio to begin work.
M Ward also has his own show coming up, with Conor....
Bright Eyes and M. Ward will headline a free rally concert at the Saddle Creek Records-owned Slowdown on Feb. 7 to raise awareness for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.Stay tuned for another She & Him tour announcement, and click here for a list of other musicians currently endorsing candidates.
To recruit voters for the Nebraska Democratic caucus on Feb. 9, Obama's camp set up shop yesterday (Feb. 5) at the 625-capacity club to give away free concert tickets to those who will either register to vote or sign a pledge card to support Obama. A maximum of two tickets will be given to people who are 18 and older, according to the Slowdown's Web site. [Billboard]
note: Super Tuesday is today, so don't forget to vote.
Wilco and Obama (CRED)
Music blog Hard To Find A Friend contacted a few musicians & industry people, and not surprisingly found out most of them were voting for Obama. Anyone who saw Joanna Newsom at BAM last week knows what she thinks, and Morrissey wears it on his shirt. Craig Wedren, Wilco, The Grateful Dead, and some comedians have also let us know where they stand.
The Guardian also has an article on this very subject today. They report that.....
...On the Republican side... there are not very many famous activist musicians. Ted Nugent, he who once said "We should Nagasaki [Iraq]" has turned out in favour of conservative Mike Huckabee, while moderate John McCain will have Burt Bacharach tickling his ivories. Libertarian long-shot Ron Paul is backed by Krist Novoselic, formerly of Nirvana. Country-singer Pat Boone has loaned his septuagenarian twang to the campaign of Mitt Romney, who can also count on the help of fellow Mormons Donny and Marie Osmond....Other musicians for Ron Paul (not Ru Paul) include John Mayer (I think), and TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek. I wonder what his friend Scarlett Johansson would say. You can see her in one of the two Obama-themed music videos below.....

DOWNLOAD: Extra Golden - Obama (MP3)
Warning: "World Music" contained in the MP3 above
Obama" is Extra Golden's song of praise for the Senator from Illinois and everyone else who helped them unite in the US last fall for a debut tour and the recording of this album, the follow up to their debut, Ok-Oyot System. Such songs of praise are benga tradition.Continued below....
"Ok-Oyot System" loosely translated as "It's Not Easy", and that was definitely the case when Extra Golden's Kenyan members sought visas to enter the US last fall. It was largely thanks to help from Obama and his office that Opiyo Bilongo and Onyango Wuod Omari were able at the very last minute to get their visas and make their first trip outside of east Africa.
