Beach House / Vampire Weekend / crowdsurfer
"I think it's dark and it looks like rain." One out of two, Bob. If ever an Osheaga headliner would thrive under stormy skies, it's the Cure, but the downpour forecast earlier in the week never arrived. Just as well -- this was Robert Smith at his most crowd-pleasing.While Lollapalooza was going down in Chicago over the weekend, Montreal was getting its own three-day festival, Osheaga. The fest had many of the same artists at Lollapalooza, with day 1 giving us sets from The Cure, Beach House, Vampire Weekend, Alt-J, DIIV and more, in addition to sets from artists who didn't play Lollapalooza, like The Gaslight Anthem, Ellie Goulding, and more. Pictures of day 1 are in this post.
The set list was calibrated for a festival audience: a generous delegation from Disintegration, early appearances by In Between Days and Just Like Heaven, and an overall tone that didn't leave much room for crying jags. The chirpy Mint Car and Doing the Unstuck ("let's get happy") bracketed the beloved-by-some Friday I'm in Love, comically botched by Smith after he said: "Sometimes, very occasionally, we'll play this song. This is the right night." [Montreal Gazette]
Like with Lollapalooza (and other upcoming shows), Death Grips were scheduled to play the fest but cancelled.
Update: Day 2 pics are up now. More day 1 pictures below...
The SummerScreen 2013 film lineup was announced back in April, and today the music portion of the summer series was announced. Like every year, each Wednesday a movie is screened in McCarren Park following a performance by a local artist. And the whole thing is totally free.
The SummerScreen people write, "In case of rain, bands will be relocated to a nearby venue (usually 285 Kent Ave) with the same 6pm-sundown set times. We'll announce whether or not shows will be moved by 3pm on rainy days at toddpnyc.com."
This year's series begins on July 10 with a screening of Can't Hardly Wait and a performance by Jeffrey Lewis. Head below to browse the rest of the lineup...

DOWNLOAD: Splashh - Sun Kissed Bliss (MP3)
As mentioned before, UK band Splashh (that's two Hs) are currently on the road with Generationals and that tour hits NYC on Monday (4/22) at Bowery Ballroom. That show is sold out but if you'd like another chance at catching Splashh, we are pleased to report that the band are playing an early BrooklynVegan-presented show at Pianos the next night (4/23) with Carmen Villian and "Les Yeux." Splash are on at 7 PM and tickets are only $5. Stop by after work. Stop by after class, but do stop by.
Splash will release their debut album, Comfort, on June 4 via Kanine Records. The band have distinctly British influences despite a name (and song titles) that might lead you to believe they are UK's answer to Wavves. The album's first single is "Sun Kissed Bliss" and the title gives you a good indication of the bright, shoegazy vibes it's giving off. Check it out via MP3 above or streaming below.
If you can't make our show, Splashh will also play again later Tuesday night (10 PM) at Shea Stadium with Black Marble.
The rest of the night is definitely worth sticking around for. This will be Carmen Villain's first American show. She's half Norwegain and half Mexican, was actually born in the U.S. but now lives in London. (She's also graced the cover of Vogue but don't hold that against her.) Carmen's debut album, Sleeper, is out now on Smalltown Supersound and you can stream it via Spotify below. It was co-produced by Carmen and Serena-Maneesh's Emil Nikolaisen with additional production and sequencing by Prins Thomas. Which is to say it's guitar-heavy, dissonant and dreamy with some interesting production flourishes as well. You can check out the video for single, "Easy," below. It's her only North American date as of now.
And, as for "Les Yeux," as we hinted at previously, it's actually Oberhofer whose new EP, Notalgia, comes out the same day as our show. It's the third week of his April "Les Yeux" residency at Pianos, and the final instalment (4/30) is with LODRO and Cowboy Indian Bear.
We're pretty excited about this one. Did we mention it was just five bucks? Hope to see you there on Tuesday at 7 PM. Streams and videos below.

Pictureplane at BrooklynVegan SXSW showcase 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
As mentioned, Pictureplane is going on a US tour this spring with Crystal Castles, but first will be in New Haven, CT at Toad's Place tonight (4/12) for a show with Mykki Blanco, Beat Culture and Oberhofer (who has upcoming NYC shows).
After returning home from that tour, he'll play show at Santos Party House on May 16 with another rapper, Antwon, whose album End of Earth features some production by Pictureplane. Tickets for what should be a pretty great show are on sale now. All tour dates are listed below.
Pictureplane also just released a new track, "Pure War." In his words, "the song is really about waging a war. a pure war against the war that is waged on us everyday.
reclaiming yourself." It's one of the heaviest tracks Pictureplane has ever done, with dark, booming synths that will translate really well on the dancefloor. And while tracks like "Real Is A Feeling" have already proved Pictureplane as a strong vocalist, there's a newfound conviction in his vocals in this song that arguably tops anything he's done to date.
The track will apear on the video game soundtrack for Injustice: Gods Among Us, along with tracks from Killer Mike (listen below), Minus the Bear (listen below), Depeche Mode, The Faint, and others.
All Pictureplane dates are listed, along with all song streams below...

Les Yeux: French for "Blurry Brad Oberhofer"?
Tonight (4/9) at Pianos is the start of a four-week residency from some band called "Les Yeux." We've never heard of them, the quotes around their name are curious and, oh, word on the street is it's actually Oberhofer, whose new EP, Notalgia, is out April 23. (That's what Mickey the shoeshine guy tells us, at least.) Tickets for all four Tuesday-in-April shows are on sale now.
The openers at the four residency dates are as such: tonight (4/9) the show is with Dinowalrus and Redfoot; April 16 is with Friend Roulette and EL Topo; April 23 is with Carmen Villain and "special guests"; and April 30 is with LODRO and Cowboy Indian Bear.
Whether or not "Les Yeux" turns out to be Oberhofer, you can catch them for sure at Glasslands on May 2 with Celestial Shore and Life Size Maps (tickets), the start of a short tour. Meanwhile, the band have released a second track from Notalgia, the very catchy "You + Me (Still Together In The Future)" and you can stream it below.

DOWNLOAD: Oberhofer - Landline (live @ Snacky Tunes) (MP3)
Ex Cops @ South Street Seaport, 7/13/2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
We mentioned before that there was a Sandy relief benefit happening at Cameo on Tuesday (11/13) being presented by Finger on the Pulse / Snacky Tunes folks (Greg and Darin Bresnitz). The benefit also doubles as the release party for Snacky Tunes Vol. 3, the the latest free, downloadable collection of live performances from their internet radio show of the same name that broadcasts on the Heritage Radio network (whose booth is in Roberta's back yard). The new volume includes songs from Wallpaper, Zambri, Spinto Band, Sinkane and Brad Oberhofer who performs a solo acoustic version of "Landline" which you can download at the top of this post.
The line-up for the Cameo release party/benefit has changed since we originally posted about it. Emil & Friends have dropped off the bill, replaced by Ex-Cops. Moon Hooch and Erika Spring with both be performing as well, as mentioned previously, and Computer Magic will be on DJ duty throughout the night. A $5 donation at the door gets you in (feel free to donate more) and all proceeds (as well as 10% of the bar, so drink up) go to the Red Hook Initiative. Updated flyer is below.
Meanwhile, Ex Cops have announced details of their debut album, True Hallucinations, which comes out January 22 via Other Music Recording Co. Produced by John Siket (Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead), the record shows off Brian Harding's strong songwriting chops (and the lovely vocals of Amalie Bruun) over the course of 11 jangly, just-hazy-enough songs that all get straight to the hooks. You can stream "James" from the album below and check out True Hallucination's cover art and tracklist.
Oberhofer @ MHOW, September 2011 (more by Bryan Bruchman)
As you may have read, Matt & Kim will open for Passion Pit at Madison Square Garden on February 8. Tickets to that show go on sale Friday (10/19) at noon. The cheery duo have shows of their own coming up well before that, playing Terminal 5 on November 15 (tickets) and Wellmont Theatre on November 17 (tickets).
What we haven't told you yet is that Oberhofer will be opening for Matt & Kim on these shows and the rest of the tour for that matter which tonight (10/17) plays Tampa, Fl. When this tour ends, Brad and crew will begin work on the follow-up to this year's Time Capsules II, perhaps using this organ.
An updated list of Oberhofer tour dates are below.

As mentioned before, Oberhofer are playing Brooklyn Bowl on Wednesday (8/29) and since we posted about that Bleeding Rainbow and Heavenly Beat have been added to the show, which makes for a pretty solid line-up. Tickets are still available but if you'd like to go to the show for free, we're giving away a pair of tickets. Details on how to enter are below.
Bleeding Rainbow's new album, Yeah Right, was supposed to come out October 9 but has now been pushed back to January 29. In the months leading up to it, the band will release a series of 7" singles, the first of which, "Pink Ruff," will be out in October, with "Drift Away" released in November and "Waking Dream" in December. You can stream "Pink Ruff" below and watch the video as well. Bleeding Rainbow head out on tour with Eternal Summers right after the Brooklyn Bowl show and will be back in NYC around CMJ. Updated dates are listed below.
The Brooklyn Bowl show will be the second show for Heavenly Beat in live band form. I caught the group's live debut at Public Assembly a few weeks back, and thought they were pretty good for a first show.
Video, streams and Bleeding Rainbow tour dates are below.
It was two weeks ago that Oberhofer were to have played Hudson Park River Rocks show with The Soft Pack when that damn dechero messed everything up with its high winds, sheets of rain and low-hanging ominous cloud formations most of us had only ever seen in Ghostbusters. While not outside or free, Oberhofer will play Brooklyn Bowl on August 29 where the strikes are of the pin, not lightning, variety. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Meanwhile, Oberhofer have made a video for "Crusin FDR" from their enjoyable debut album, Time Capsules II, and you can watch that below.
River Rocks will wrap up the 2012 season tonight (8/9) with Grimes, Wild Nothing and DIIV and the weather looks like it's going to be ok. Doors are at 6PM.
Oberhofer tour dates are listed below along with that video

Bon Iver recorded an iTunes session at East West studios which is available exclusively from iTunes starting today. It includes six tracks off 2011's great Bon Iver, Bon Iver and a cover of Bjork's "Who Is It?," which the band has played live many times. Speaking of Bjork, she's teaming up with the New York Public Library (NYPL) and the Children's Museum of Manhattan to create interactive educational programs for middle school-aged students based on her Biophilia app. Speaking about the program, Bjork said:
"It's not a bookish thing. You cannot learn to make music from a book." "I love books; they're like the best ever," she added. "There are things you can only learn from books, but it's also important to introduce the physical aspects. So for me, it was very important to make, somehow, music education that was physical." (via NY Daily News)Both Bon Iver and Bjork are set to play Oya Festival in Oslo, Norway this summer (Aug 7-11) with The Stone Roses, Refused, The Afghan Whigs, Bob Mould (performing Copper Blue), Chromatics, Cloud Nothings, John Maus, Purity Ring, Saint Etienne, SBTRKT, Screaming Females, St. Vincent, and more. Full list below.
Way Out West (Aug 9-11) in Gothenberg, Sweden features many of the same bands as Oya like Bon Iver, Refused, Afghan Whigs, St. Vincent, Purity Ring, John Maus, and Bob Mould in addition to Blur, Wilco, I Break Horses, Hot Chip, The War On Drugs, Mark Lanegan Band, Adolescents, Swans, and more. Check out the spotify playlist. The full lineup is listed below.
As mentioned, the reunited Mazzy Star is set to play both of those European festivals. Full lineups and the Bon Iver dates and song, below...

Kenny Rogers & Lionel Richie @ SXSW 2012 (more by Ryan Barkan)
"The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has had some surprises artists in the past. There was some surprise when country act Dierks Bentley made the cut and maybe a little surprise when rap star Emenim was booked. But the 2012 addition of country icon Kenny Rogers may be the most surprising addition to the line-up yet.I hope he does a duet with Danzig. Meanwhile watch him duet with Lionel below...
Rogers' appearance was announced on April 26. The complete Bonnaroo schedule is expected to be announced soon. The festival will be held June 7-10 in Manchester, Tenn." [Knoxville.com]
Off! @ NXNE 2011 (more by Natasha Ryan)
The most memorable thing that happened the year I visited Toronto for NXNE was Iggy Pop & The Stooges playing their big, outdoor, free, no-ticket-or-badge-required show downtown at Yonge-Dundas Square. Last year the Descendents did it. This year they've landed the Flaming Lips which should be an amazing spectacle. And:
NXNE Music has confirmed that Bad Religion, Raekwon & Ghostface Killah and Matthew Good will headline free shows at Yonge-Dundas Square (YDS) throughout the seven-day festival. The NXNE Music line-up also includes performances at YDS and in the clubs by Of Montreal, No Use For A Name, Purity Ring, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Death Grips, The Men, Bleached, Good Riddance, METZ, Ceremony, Plants & Animals, The Death Set, The Sadies & Andre Williams, Oberhofer, Reigning Sound, Action Bronson, 2:54, Yamantaka/ /Sonic Titan, The Hundred in The Hands, Rival Schools, Killer Mike, Young Magic, Hayes Carll, Friends, Hollerado, Bran Van 3000, The Black Belles, Doldrums, Odonis Odonis, Mac DeMarco, Bass Drum of Death, Porcelain Raft, Exitmusic, Violens, Grass Widow, Eight and a Half, DZ Deathrays, Jonathan Toubin, Art vs. Science, B L A C K I E, The Nils and Ivan Julian (ex-Richard Hell & The Voidoids).Jonathan Toubin!!

Lollapalooza (more by Grant MacAllister)
Chicago Sun Times reports:
Lollapalooza has revealed its official 2012 list of performers -- a typically wide-ranging smorgasbord of genres and styles topped by nearly a dozen mainstage headliners: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, freshly reunited bands Black Sabbath and At the Drive-In, the Black Keys, Jack White, Florence + The Machine, the Shins and Passion Pit, plus spotlighted electronic music including Swedish house titan Avicii, French dance duo Justice and DJ-producer Bassnectar.Check out the full list below...
The annual music festival is scheduled for Aug. 3-5 in Chicago's Grant Park.
Rumored lineups have circulated widely, as they usually do, and Lollapalooza itself stoked the speculation in recent weeks via a series of CTA and online advertisements that seemed to hint at who would be playing.
The ads featured lyrics from such acts as Sigur Ros, Santigold, Jack White, Kimbra, Twin Shadow, the Weeknd, Bloc Party and more -- all bands that wound up on the bill.

Pond @ Hotel Vegan on Saturday
Australian band Pond (not to be confused with Portland band Pond), who include two members of Tame Impala, just hit SXSW and are now on tour with Oberhofer. That tour arrives at Bowery Ballroom TONIGHT (3/21) for what will be Pond's first-ever NYC show (at a venue Tame Impala have headlined and sold out). Tickets are still on sale, so go out and give them a proper welcome (and then stick around for Oberhofer too). Afterwards head to Tribeca Grand for the afterparty. Flyer, details and more tour dates below.
I caught Pond once in Austin, at our own show at Hotel Vegan, and it was one of the most memorable of the week, in part from the performance, and in part from all the fun everyone/friends around me were having as the band rocked the intimate and packed Volstead space on Saturday afternoon.
Stereogum posted some SXSW awards, and Pond won for...
BEST BARE FEET: Nick "Paisley Adams" Allbrook, the perpetually shoe-bereft bassist for Tame Impala, who was recast this week as the perpetually shoe-bereft livewire frontman for Australian classic riff-rock vamp band/Tame Impala spinoff POND. What he lacks in shoes he makes up in HEART (and amphetamine-y spasms and contortions). -AmritSome pictures and videos from our Hotel Vegan show, and a video from another show, are in this post (a full stream of their set at Hype Hotel can be watched HERE, but the audio sucks). More pics and videos, with the other stuff, below...
