Of Montreal / Ducktails @ Savannah Stopover, 3/8/2013
Of Montreal
Ducktails

Amazingly, Athens-based of Montreal's gig was their first ever in Savannah.

Of Montreal's show in the park was also the first time the sweeping backdrop of our so-called band shell was used to full effect. Surreal and colorful, the dancing images looked almost as wonderful from a distance as the ridiculous stage theatrics appeared up close.

That event might have been the signature event of the third annual indie music festival that lures many bands headed to Austin for SXSW, but there were plenty of other gems.

Thursday's opening night lineup was especially impressive.

To get the festival rolling, the rich sounds of The Last Bison filled up the glorious North Garden at the Ships of the Sea Museum. The music ended about six hours later, with Mac DeMarco finishing his set by crowd surfing at The Jinx.

In between, a couple of dozen acts played at a variety of downtown venues, including Thurston Moore and his new band Chelsea Light Moving in the beautifully renovated ballroom at the Knights of Columbus on Liberty Street. - [Savannah Now]

As mentioned, the Savannah Stopover happened over the weekend in its namesake Georgia town with bands from all over the world playing on their way to SXSW. BV photographer Dominick Mastrangelo was there the whole weekend and here are pics from Friday (3/8), including shots of Of Montreal, Braids, Ducktails, Chris Cohen and more. Check them out below.

Of Montreal at Webster Hall in 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
Of Montreal

Of Montreal, who will be in Savannah tonight for Savannah Stopover, have just announced a spring tour which brings the band to NYC on May 22 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. That show and many others on the tour are with Wild Moccasins. It's a pretty intimate venue for the band, who played the larger Webster Hall a few times last year and, knowing Of Montreal, things should get pretty crazy. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (3/15) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (3/13) at noon.

The band also just recorded an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. You can watch that video and check out all dates listed below...

The Strokes

SXSW is no doubt a great way to see a lot of bands in a short amount of time and can be a lot of fun. But it can also be a little much for some. If you'd like to see many of the same bands but in a more genteel setting, you might be interested in The Savannah Stopover which happens the weekend before SXSW (March 7 - 9) in at various clubs in Savannah, Georgia. Over 100 bands will play, including Of Montreal, Merchandise, Mac DeMarco, Chelsea Light Moving, Hunters, Braids, Delicate Steve, Turbo Fruits, Ducktails and loads more.

Tickets ($30 per day or $75 for three-day pass) are on sale now and more info is at Savannah Stopover's website. The full announced lineup is below.

Foxygen @ BVCMJ 2012 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Foxygen

Foxygen, who were one of the breakout bands at CMJ this year, will release We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic on January 22 via Jagjaguwar records. You can pre-order the album now with a few different "bundle" options. We've got the premiere of video for "Shuggie," which is the album's first single. The black-and-white clip, directed by Ulysses///Onasis, features a lot of people running while carrying giant boxes. Some other stuff happens too, with a very messy ending, but we don't want to spoil it for you, as you can watch it below. The song itself is typical of Foxygen's cross-polination pop approach, that is a little Elton John and a little Jim Morrison, among other things.

Meanwhile, Foxygen are taking their highly-entertaining live show on the road, including some December shows with Of Montreal on their tour which hits NYC on December 11 at Webster Hall. Tickets are still available. Then in 2013, they'll go out with Jagjaguwar labelmates Unknown Mortal Orchestra (but not at their NYC show) for a tour that will take them from the South across the bottom of America and then a trip up the West Coast.

A list of all upcoming dates and the "Shuggie" video, below...

Bob Mould at one of the last Copper Blue shows, FFF 2012 (more by Glen Brown)
Bob Mould

After trotting out jams from his Sugar catalog earlier this year, Bob Mould has put the records, in their entirety, to rest

And now it's time to say farewell to Copper Blue. I'm not retiring the songs -- many of them will be in my live sets forever -- but I am putting the "start to finish" reading of Copper Blue to rest after playing it at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, CA on October 30 and then at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin TX on November 2.

It was wonderful to pay tribute to Copper Blue by opening the 2012 shows with a start to finish reading of the album. By the end of the North American tour it felt a bit predictable. The longtime followers know my restlessness all too well, so my need to shake things up should be no surprise.

Sugar's catalog was recently reiussed by Merge in the US, and will see a UK/EU release via Demon Music Group on December 10th.

It's not that Bob Mould is one of those types of guys who would always rather showcase new material, in fact, he's always been one to celebrate his back catalog. Case and point, his See a Little Light documentary which is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter.

Last November at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, some of today's most influential artists gathered to celebrate the music of Bob Mould. Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Britt Daniel (Spoon), Ryan Adams, No Age, Craig Finn and Tad Kubler (The Hold Steady), Margaret Cho with Grant Lee Phillips, and Jessica Dobson (The Shins, Deep Sea Diver) all performed songs from Bob's historic catalog... Fortunately, the entire evening was captured in stunning audio and high-quality video quality by filmmaker Justin Mitchell.
Mould is currently around 20% toward his $95k goal, which ends in 37 days. Contribute if you can. Video on the project is below, beside a string of tour dates.

Bob Mould's next date with NYCers goes down on 2/8/13 at Highline Ballroom, where he'll be DJing alongside his Blowoff partner Richard Morel (tickets). Their last Blowoff party at the venue was on 11/9.

While we're on the subject of Kickstarter, Of Montreal is also looking to do a concert film of their own titled Song Dynasties. The band is currently around 1/3 of the way toward their $75,000 goal in 26 days. Contribute here, but first check out their video presentation below. below.

Of Montreal is on tour this fall, and will play NYC at Webster Hall on December 11th as part of a larger tour. All dates are listed again below...

Of Montreal at McCarren Park in June (more by Joe McCabe)
Of Montreal

Of Montreal are set to release a rarities compilation called Daughter of Cloud on October 23 via Polyvinyl. The album compiles 17 tracks recorded from 2007 to present, 10 of which were never released and the other seven which were previously issued on limited edition, rare, or out of print releases. You can stream one of the album's tracks, "Sails, Hermaphroditic," and check out the cover art and tracklist below.

Of Montreal will also be going on a North American tour this fall, which brings them back to NYC for a show at Webster Hall on December 11, where they played twice earlier this year. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday, September 14 at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday, September 12 at noon.

In related news, Kevin Barnes' wife Nina Barnes (who has worked with Of Montreal in the past) has teamed up with Orenda Fink of Azure Ray to form the duo Harouki Zombi, who will release their first EP, Objet Petit A, on October 23 via Polyvinyl. The EP includes a track written by Kevin Barnes ("Vacated Hunters") and was produced by Todd Fink of The Faint. You can stream the EP's title track and check out the tracklist below.

A list of all dates, song streams, cover art, and tracklists are below...

Bill Doss

A memorial service for Olivia Tremor Control's Bill Doss, who passed away on July 30, went down at the 40 Watt in Athens on August 4th. Friends and family, like Jeff Mangum, Julian Koster, Robert Schneider, Bryan Poole, Jason NeSmith, Derek Almstead, and Eric Harris, gathered to tell stories and perform songs in tribute to their Elephant 6 brother...

A slide show portrayed Doss with his family, friends and performing with band members and musicians. Others captured a combination of serious and funny portraits.

"Bill was a beautiful soul who left the world in a better state than he found it," said Jason NeSmith, lead guitarist of Casper & the Cookies. "I love him like a brother."
When a stream of performers and others who were close to Doss spoke to the gathering, they emphasized laughter, family and music.

A tearful reading of The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" started the line of conversations and acoustic performances.

Robert Schneider, lead vocalist and guitarist of Apples in Stereo, recounted the time he first met Doss. [redandblack]

of Montreal at McCarren Park - 6/15/12
Of Montreal

Starting with a long drum intro, the band went straight into "Suffer For Fashion" followed by one of the only two new songs of the night. Each song, however was a powerhouse. "She's A Rejector" had the crowd jumping; "St. Exquisite's Confessions" had everyone swaying to sexy saxophones; a cover of "Immigrant Song" had the audience headbanging. There was a hefty dose of Hissing Fauna and Skeletal Lamping tunes, including all 14 minutes of "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal" which I still hold to be their best live song. The 10 minute slow burn crescendo of a song, featuring K. Ishibashi's screechy violin and Barnes strained yells (when he goes into a gravelly scream, he sounds best), was an appropriate set closer, juxtaposing the low volume of the set before it. The sound issues weren't the bands fault: the event just happened to be in the middle of a semi-residential area. [CMJ]
of Montreal played a Northside show at McCarren Park last Friday (6/15) with Jens Lekman, The Thermals, and Beach Fossils before heading to Toronto for NXNE. Pictures of Jens Lekman from McCarren Park are HERE. More pics and the setlist from of Montreal's set are below...

Jens Lekman @ MHOW in 2011 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Jens

Jens Lekman, whose upcoming Brooklyn show with Of Montreal was moved from Williamsburg Park to McCarren Park, now reports:

"Regarding Northside Festival in NY this Friday - Me and my band had unexplained difficulties with our visas resulting in the band not being able to make it. This is very frustrating to me as I have been rehearsing with the band for weeks and we were going to perform a whole new set. Neverthless, I was able to find a way to make it by myself. So instead I will be doing a solo acoustic set before Of Montreal and YOU will have to be my band. I'll do some classics, you sing along, we'll have a good time. "
$37.58 tickets are still on sale or you can get in with your Northside Badge.

The BrooklynVegan showcase, which will have openers announced shortly, is also that same night at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Caveman and Frankie Rose. Tickets are also still on sale (or stop by with your Northside Badge).

I Know What Love Isn't

As you may have heard, Jens Lekman is playing the Northside Festival next week, a big outdoor show that was recently moved to McCarren Park on June 15 with Of Montreal, The Thermals and Beach Fossils. It's his only North American date at this time.

Wouldn't you know it, Jens has a new album coming out, I Know What Love Isn't, his first in five years which will be out September 4 on Secretly Canadian. Here's Jon Coombs' forward to the album that Jens just posted on his website:

Tracey Thorn wrote a song that reached Jens in the early stages of his new album, I Know What Love Isn't. In her song she sang "Oh Jens, oh Jens / your songs seem to look through a different lens / you're still so young, love ends just as easy as it's begun." A touching moment for the Swedish songwriter, having been a fan since his teens. But it came to him in a time when he found himself very confused and in doubt. He was changing and, subsequently, so were his songs. They weren't looking through that lens anymore.

I Know What Love Isn't came out of a break up, something Jens didn't see as worth writing about at first. The songs began more fleeting than the last go around, on his 2007 album Night Falls Over Kortedala. The songs began building from images and memories and soon began to take their own route, one that Lekman wasn't privy to their destination. In "The World Moves On" he paints a picture of a sweltering summer in the city of Melbourne where he lived while writing and recording the album. The hot days that led up to the Black Saturday bushfires, but also more mundane images of feeding possums in a park or getting in trouble with some guy on a scooter. It seems to lead nowhere at first but the aimlessness in itself reaches heartbreaking conclusions later on, summed up by the soaring chorus "and you don't get over a broken heart, you just learn to carry it gracefully". Like Joan Didion once said that she writes entirely to find out what she's thinking, Jens wrote until he caught up with his thoughts. And of course they led him right back to the break up.

Musically, I Know What Love Isn't chooses an economic route. From the vast palette he created for Kortedala, he's only chosen a few sombre colors this time around. There are strings but not a string section, an upright piano and not a grand, a single saxophone and gracenotes from a flute. The songs are lighter, almost aerodynamic, Jens explains - "I wanted the songs to take off almost unnoticeably, where the chorus is separated from the verse only through a small detail like a tambourine or a harmony. Like when you're in an airplane taking off and you look out the window and realize you're already in the air." A dry country piano makes "Become Someone Else's" lift high. Vocals from Melbourne singer Sophie Brous makes the chorus in "Erica America" soar. Strings pick up the title track and send it up to the sky without much effort or force.

In the latter, Lekman once again points the way to distill essential truths from every day life vignettes while singing about a sham marriage. "I thought of the Friday nights when I'd be cruising up and down the street with my best friend in her old crappy Holden, talking about getting married to get me into the country. The idea was so appealing, that we would build this constructed relationship around a purpose rather than some vague feeling that could change at anytime. But in the end, the sham marriage is much too great a story to be kept secret. At least when you make a living from telling stories."

And that's what I Know What Love Isn't... is. A collection of songs that grew to a story that had to be told. A story that is not new, but essentially human. The story of the grey areas of love that you have to excavate and explore, using the method of exclusion, to find out what love is.

That's the album art above and you can hear the first single, Prefab Sprout-y "Erica America," below along with the album tracklist and a list of all current tour dates.

Of Montreal at Webster Hall in March 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
Of Montreal

The Jens Lekman/Of Montreal/Thermals/Beach Fossils show on June 15, part of the Northside Festival, has been moved from Williamsburg Park to McCarren Park where the Northside shows were last year. Here's the reason from the Northside folks:

Since we'll be starting SummerScreen in early July, we thought it would be best to keep all our shows in your favorite neighborhood park, so we're coming home to the corner of Berry and N. 12th St, smack dab in the middle of Williamsburg, and a short jaunt from the Bedford L Train.

If you've already bought your ticket, no worries! Just bring it to McCarren Park on the date of the show, and we'll usher you in with open arms.

And if you don't already have tickets, they're still available -- or you can use your Northside badge if you have one of those.

Kishi Bashi at Webster Hall in March (more by Bryan Bruchman)
Kishi Bashi

The Barr Brothers (Andrew and Brad Barr of The Slip) and Kishi Bashi (K Ishibashi of Jupiter One and touring member of of Montreal) have a few dates together this month including a NYC show TONIGHT (5/16) at Le Poisson Rouge. Tickets for that show are available.

Maybe you caught Kishi Bashi doing his vocal/violin set as an opening act on Of Montreal's tour. He released his debut album for the project, 151a, last month on Joyful Noise. There are some definite similarities to Owen Pallett, who also creates baroque art pop primarily with his violin and voice, though it's a bit poppier than Owen. You can stream the entire album below. Kishi Bashi will also play a much larger NYC show when he opens for Dr. Dog at Summerstage (9/20) with Delta Spirit.

All dates are listed below, along with the 151a album stream...

Frankie Rose

In addition to the Jens Lekman/Of Montreal show at Williamsburg Park, the Northside Festival (June 14 - 17) just announced a slew of confirmed artists who'll be playing this year, including Future of the Left, the U.S. debut of Iceage-spinoff Vår (formerly War), Frankie Rose (playing the BrooklynVegan showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg with more TBA), Grass Widow, Cleveland's Gap Dream, Wymond Miles of the Fresh & Onlys,  Chain & the Gang, Kool Keith and more.

Other 2012 Northside Festival artists we've already posted about include Olivia Tremor Control, GZA, Neil Hamburger, Eternal Summers, Ceremony and Screaming Females and Royal Headache. Badges are on sale now and the full list of confirmed 2012 Northside artists is below.

Jens Lekman

Five shows is now six. Jens Lekman, of Montreal, The Thermals and Beach Fossils performing an all-ages show at the new Williamsburg Park on Friday, June 15. It's what surely will be the headlining event at the 2012 Northside Festival. Entry is free on a first-come, first-served basis for Northside badge-holders, though there is no guarantee of admission if badge capacity is filled. If you don't want to take your chances with getting in with a badge, tickets ($33.50) go on sale Friday, May 11 at noon.

It's been five years since Jens Lekman's last album, Night Falls Over Kortedala. When are we getting something new? Jens' latest online missive:

The topic for the month of May is : Coffee

When people ask me about my production rate the last five years I sometimes say "Well you can't pour manure in an espresso machine and expect a cappucino to come out". By which I mean that some things you just go through, you don't write about them or make art out of them.

But then my friend informed me that the worlds finest and most expensive coffee is made out of the shit from a small civet. So that backfired on me.

But I've grinded these beans for you now and I finished the last mixes last night. I just have some mastering to do and some design to finish. Two-three different bands to rehearse with for the tours. Three videos to make. A million interviews to sit through. A few months to let the distributors and labels set up their plans. A summer of being worried about what you're going to think of the album. And then it will be out.

How do you take it? Milk? Sugar?

Jens did release an EP at the end of 2011 though.

The 2012 Northside Festival happens June 14 - 17 at most of the venues in Williamsburg / Greenpoint. Badges are on sale now.

Off! @ NXNE 2011 (more by Natasha Ryan)
NXNE

The most memorable thing that happened the year I visited Toronto for NXNE was Iggy Pop & The Stooges playing their big, outdoor, free, no-ticket-or-badge-required show downtown at Yonge-Dundas Square. Last year the Descendents did it. This year they've landed the Flaming Lips which should be an amazing spectacle. And:

NXNE Music has confirmed that Bad Religion, Raekwon & Ghostface Killah and Matthew Good will headline free shows at Yonge-Dundas Square (YDS) throughout the seven-day festival. The NXNE Music line-up also includes performances at YDS and in the clubs by Of Montreal, No Use For A Name, Purity Ring, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Death Grips, The Men, Bleached, Good Riddance, METZ, Ceremony, Plants & Animals, The Death Set, The Sadies & Andre Williams, Oberhofer, Reigning Sound, Action Bronson, 2:54, Yamantaka/ /Sonic Titan, The Hundred in The Hands, Rival Schools, Killer Mike, Young Magic, Hayes Carll, Friends, Hollerado, Bran Van 3000, The Black Belles, Doldrums, Odonis Odonis, Mac DeMarco, Bass Drum of Death, Porcelain Raft, Exitmusic, Violens, Grass Widow, Eight and a Half, DZ Deathrays, Jonathan Toubin, Art vs. Science, B L A C K I E, The Nils and Ivan Julian (ex-Richard Hell & The Voidoids).
Jonathan Toubin!!

This year's fest takes place at multiple venues across Toronto from June 11-17, 2012. Tickets are on sale.

Of Montreal @ Webster Hall - 3/31/2012
Of Montreal

Like they did on Friday, Of Montreal headlined Webster Hall on Saturday night (3/31), but this time with a different set of openers including the super talented and humble, but a bit mismatched Loney Dear, who had some trouble keeping the large crowd's attention. Probably not the best idea to put a singer-songwriter on right before an energetic band like Of Montreal. Kishi Bashi's opening set of vocal and violin looping went over a bit better.

If you compare the written setlist from Friday with Saturday's (below), you'll see Kevin Barnes & company mixed it up a bit to the benefit of people who went both nights.

Of Montreal's tour continues to Boston tonight. More pictures from Saturday in NYC, below...

Of Montreal

Last night (3/30), of Montreal stopped in NYC for the first of two shows at Webster Hall, as part of their current tour. (The second one is tonight. UPDATE: It happened and pics are HERE)

Openers Hard Nips and Computer Magic got the audience pumped, but by the time Of Montreal came on it felt as though the floor of Webster Hall was going to collapse before the end of the show. Beginning with songs from their new album, Paralytic Stalks, the band released white balloons, which reflected multicolor lights as they were passed over the crowd.

The energy of frontman Kevin Barnes increased throughout the almost two-hour set, and in typical Of Montreal fashion, the show included people in white bodysuits crowd surfing, white puppets, various psychedelic images flashing on screens, and the guitarist jumping into the incredibly enthusiastic crowd.

The encore was a twenty-minute mashup of some favorites off Skeletal Lamping, and Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer, which as I heard many saying upon exit, made the entire show worthwhile.

Barnes said he was excited to do it again tonight (3/31), but this time with Loney Dear and Kishi Bashi opening (the same openers from Chicago).

Pictures of Friday night's openers are coming later, but here are some of the headliner. More, shot of the setlist included, below...

Athens, Georgia psych pop band pacificUV have been around since the late 90s. They released their well-received debut in 2003 and then moved to Portland to make their second LP, Longplay Vol. 2. Having moved back to Athens, the band are set to release their third album, Weekends on January 31. Like their previous records, Weekends mines blissed-out, synth-heavy spacerock not unlike Recurring-era Spacemen 3 and makes for a good soundtrack for staring endlessly at a lavalamp post-3AM.

We're premiering the vocoder-heavy track "Ballerina" in this post. Stream it below or download it above along with "Funny Girl" as well. Weekends -- which features appearances by Of Montreal's B.P. Helium and Olivia Tremor Control's John Fernandez -- is available in some fancy deluxe editions (though not on vinyl from what I can tell).

Click through for a video trailer and cover art for Weekends and a stream of "Ballerina."

Of Montreal will go out on tour in support of that album this spring. The newly-announced dates include NYC shows at Webster Hall on March 30 (with Computer Magic and Hard Nips) and Webster Hall on March 31 (with Loney Dear and Kishi Bashi). Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday with an AmEx presale beginning Wednesday at noon. All dates are listed below...

Escape to NY Sunday (pic via thinkmgazine)
E2NY

Yesterday it was officially announced that next weekend's East Hampton MTK music fetival was cancelled, AND THAT tickets would be honored at this weekend's Southampton music festival Escape to NY which wasn't exactly packing them in, especially on Friday. Well, so much for that plan. Escape to NY has just officially cancelled today, alledgedly due to all the rain that soaked the grounds last night and the rain that's still coming too. The cancellation came after a long delayed opening that had people sitting in the parking lot waiting to finally hear the news. Of Montreal was among the bands set to perform at the fest tonight.

Dana (Distortion) Yavin was onsite all weekend taking pictures for BrooklynVegan and is on her way home as we speak with shots from day one and day two. Stay tuned.

P.S. Q-Tip has also cancelled his Brooklyn Bowl DJ gig tonight, but will be replaced by Reptar and a DJ set by Talib Kweli.
