White Sea (M83's Morgan Kibby) / Twin Peaks / Albert Hammond Jr.

Even if you don't know Kibby (or White Sea) by name, you might recognize her sound. She's the voice behind Big Data's recent single "The Business of Emotion," she sang and played keyboard with M83 since 2008's "Saturdays=Youth" and she co-wrote hits like "Midnight City" for the French electronic music group.

"I think there are some musicians who figure out very early on who they are," she said. "I was not such a lucky writer and producer. Over the last 10 years, it's been a discovery." [Chicago Tribune]

Lollapalooza 2015 happened during the final weekend of July in Chicago's Grant Park. We already posted three days worth of photos (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), and those posts included a couple shots of BrooklynVegan host and DJ Billy Jones interviewing Albert Hammond Jr on Sunday, but most of the Toyota Tent action was left out. BrooklynVegan co-presented/curated the tent, much like we're doing again this weekend at Outside Lands, and so naturally we also have this final set of pictures from that action.

Our potion of the Toyota Tent's schedule included live sets by by Morgan Kibby of M83's band White Sea, Twin Peaks, rapper Pell, Gogol Bordello, Of Monsters and Men, Lion Babe (who are on the new Disclosure album), and more. Pictures from all of it, some portraits included, continue below...

A$AP Rocky pauses to watch the sight of a person in a wheelchair crowd surfing. Ordinarily, hip-hop shows don't spawn mosh pits but then again, most don't blare both House of Pain's "Jump Around" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" over the speakers in succession. For A$AP, yes, it's that easy, and lest anyone forgets, the initials to his name get shouted out by his trio of hype men with regular frequency. To his credit, A$AP doesn't entirely coast. He establishes and maintains a crazed level of energy for a majority of the set and treats it all as a giant party. On Sunday night, with the prospect of heading back to work fans (well, the small percentage over 18, anyway) in the face, it's the appropriate atmosphere and vibe. A$AP boasts a lyrical flow most peers would envy, and his entourage scatters like ants to the very front rows on the ground to pump up the crowd. There's even room for a compelling avante R&B turn in the form of "L.$.D." Self-promotional references, tributes to weed, descriptions of loose women and homages to money spill from the emcee's mouth. So do shout-outs to Chief Keef and Chance the Rapper. Yet it's local boy Vic Mensa who scores the guest spot for a duet on "U Mad," putting the punctuation mark on a booming celebration of modern hip-hop culture that, in spite of positive messages prouncing unity, still include clicking gun-chamber sound effects. - [Chicago Tribune]
Threat of severe weather (thunderstorms, hail) caused Grant Park to be evacuated briefly during the final day of Lollapalooza 2015 (8/2) and also had the fest end 30 minutes early. (This happened at Pitchfork too this year, and at Lolla in 2012.) Otherwise, the show went on with sets from Florence + the Machine, A$AP Rocky, TV on the Radio, Albert Hammond Jr. (who started his day in the Toyota Tent for a Q&A with BrooklynVegan correspondent Billy Jones), Of Monsters and Men, Twin Peaks, Gogol Bordello, and many more.

Pictures of Lollapalooza 2015 day 1 are HERE and day 2 are HERE. More pics from day 3 are below...

Lollapalooza is taking over Chicago's Grant Park this weekend with headliners Metallica, Paul McCartney Sam Smith, The Weeknd, Florence & the Machine, and more.

BrooklynVegan, SPIN and VIBE are returning to the sold out festival this year with a presence in the Toyota Tent which is located within the grounds of the Chicago festival. The tent, just north of the BMI stage, is marked "Toyota Sound Central" in this map:

Stop by to check out intimate, bonus sets by artists playing the festival (For instance, Glass Animals play the Samsung Galaxy Stage Friday at 2:15. You can then see them again in the Toyota tent at 6pm the same day).

Come see BrooklynVegan Lolla representative Billy Jones interview Albert Hammond Jr of the Strokes on Sunday at 1pm. Stick around to say hello to Toyota Tent host Yassir Lester, and to see Of Monsters & Men and Gogol Bordello play inches from your face. Come see BrooklynVegan-presented performances by Twin Peaks and Pell on Saturday afternoon. Check out the full weekend schedule below....

Bonnaroo 2013, Day 2

Depsite a couple cancelations (Mumford, Earl Sweatshirt), Bonnaroo 2013 had more than enough starpower to keep the masses entertained throughout the 2013 edition which happened over the weekend. Friday (6/14) featured one of the most famous musicians in the world, Paul McCartney, plus sets from ZZ Top, The Wu-Tang Clan, Wilco, Of Monsters and Men, Passion Pit, Jim James, Grizzly Bear, The xx, Big K.R.I.T. and loads more. Pictures of day 2 are in this post.

We missed Animal Collective (they went on at 2 AM), but you can check out a video of Police Academy's human sound fx machine Michael Winslow joining them on stage below. Besides the main attractions, there were other cool things too, including Johnny Fritz (aka Johnny Corndawg) on the smaller Sonic stage, comedy throughout the day, and the big hip hop superjam with Schoolboy Q, RZA, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Solange, and more.

Pictures from Day 1 are HERE with more on the way. More pictures from Friday below...

Half Moon Run @ Stubb's in Austin on Monday (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)

As mentioned, Montreal's Half Moon Run will be in town this week for two headlining NYC shows: Glasslands on Friday (6/7) with Young Unknows (tickets) and Mercury Lounge on Monday (6/10) with Oceanographer (tickets). Both are much, much smaller venues than most of dates they've had on their current North American tour which has been spent opening for Glassnote labelmates Mumford & Sons and Of Monsters and Men (who play Governors Ball on Friday). Their tour with that Icelandic band hit Austin earlier this week (6/3) and you can check out a full set of pictures from that at BV Austin.

Half Moon Run's 2012 debut album, Dark Eyes, is being re-released on Glassnote July 23, with a bit of a spit-shine from Spoon cohort Jim Eno and a few tracks being swapped out. You can stream one of the new tracks from it, "Unofferable," below and download it from HMR's bandcamp.

All upcoming Half Moon Run tour dates are listed below...

Governors Ball is less than a month away, and the fest has now released the daily schedule. We're only a couple weeks out from Vampire Weekend's third album, Modern Vampires of the City, which hits retailers digital and physical on May 14. Look for the band, who just played Coachella, to preview tracks from the album at their sold-out show on Sunday (4/28) at Roseland Ballroom which is being broadcast live on the internet as part of the American Express Unstaged Performance series. The webcast, which is being directed by Steve Buscemi, starts at 9 PM EDT.

For those in NYC who would like to make the webcast experience a little more concert-like, Brooklyn Bowl, with help from the Tribeca Film Festival (which concludes on Sunday), will be showing it live on their many giant HD screens with "full concert sound." It's free entry.

Speaking of bowling, Vampire Weekend and Steve Buscemi, the band and Boardwalk Empire star are continuing to play out their friendship on the web with a second installment of the "documentary" about prepping for the Roseland show, which ends up at Brooklyn's Melody Lanes. There's also other episodes -- one with Grimes -- and you can watch them all below.

And last but not least, Vampire Weekend will appear on the May 11 episode of Saturday Night Live which is hosted by former castmember Kristen Wiig. So get ready for affable indie rock and the probable return of Gilly. Kanye West and Ben Afleck will apear on SNL's 38th Season Finale on May 18, and next weekend (May 4) it's Zach Galifianakis and Of Monsters and Men.

All upcoming Vampire Weekend tour dates (there are some new ones including Hollywood Bowl with Beirut, not NYC) are listed, along with the bowling video, below...

Continue reading "Vampire Weekend add dates, playing SNL (w/ Kristen Wiig) ++ more Buscemi videos (one with Grimes!); Roseland livestream @ Brooklyn Bowl"

Miguel on 'SNL' / Daft Punk w/ Pharrell & Nile Rogers

Another new SNL, another new Daft Punk commercial. This one -- a slightly shorter version of the one shown to Coachella audiences -- gives us the first substantial taste of Random Access Memories' "Get Lucky," that's been teased in previous ads, and features both Pharrel Williams and and some chic guitarwork from Nile Rodgers, not to mention the men/robots themselves. This is, we assume, a snippet of the "Get Lucky" video? You can watch it below.

Meanwhile, Daft Punk have released the third in their "Collaborators" series of promotional videos with the folks who worked on Random Access Memories. This one is with Nile Rodgers who very humbly talks about his contribution to dance music over the years and you can watch that below too.

Meanwhile, on the actual show (4/13), Miguel performed his Grammy-winning hit "Adorn" and then a rocked-out version of "How Many Drinks," with that magnetism (that we saw at our BV CMJ day party last year) on full display. The next new SNL is May 4 with Of Monsters and Men performing, while Zach Galifianakis hosts. Miguel videos from last night are below.

Half Moon Run @ BVSXSW 2013
BV Day Party @ The Main & Jr, March 15th, 2013

Montreal's Half Moon Run have played BV SXSW day parties the last two years, playing our Friday show this year and pictures from their set are in this post. The band's debut album, Dark Eyes, is getting reissued in America on Glassnote (home of Phoenix, CHVRCHES and more) which should bring their harmony-laden songs to a lot more ears. You can stream it below.

Meanwhile, the band are going out on tour with their new labelmates Mumford & Sons this summer, as well as dates with Of Monsters and Men. Amongst these big, big shows Half Moon Run will play two headlining club dates in NYC: June 7 at Glasslands and June 10 at Mercury Lounge. A still from 'Mistaken for Strangers'
Mistaken for Strangers

The National, who'll headline the Barclays Center in June, are the subject of a new tour documentary, Mistaken for Strangers, which will make its premiere at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival (April 17 - 28). The film was directed by Tom Berninger, whose brother Matt is lead singer of The National. Here's the synopsis:

Adrift in life and fuelled by the desire to create, Tom Berninger accepts his brother's offer to come on The National tour as a roadie and decides to chronicle his experiences with the band. Although Tom starts off with dreams of making a rock documentary (you can watch the portaits he made on each of the band members), a different story emerges as tensions among the band members lead to unforeseen drama. Following the band from Berlin to Paris to Los Angeles to a 2010 Obama rally in Madison, Wisconsin, Mistaken for Strangers is not your typical road documentary.
The film will screen on April 17 and will be followed by a special live performance by The National.

Festival packages go on sale to AmEx cardholders on Monday (3/4), which is one day before the entire slate of films for Tribeca will be announced. Festival passes go on sale to the general public following Monday (3/11). Individual tickets will go on sale 4/9 for AmEx cardholders, 4/14 for downtown residents and 4/15 to the general public.

In related news, The National are co-headlining (with fun.) the Boston Calling Music Festival which goes down in Beantown on May 25 and 26. The fest also includes appearances by The Shins, Of Monsters & Men, Dirty Projectors, Andrew Bird and more. Tickets to Boston Calling go sale Friday, March 8 and the whole line-up is below.
