Kurt Ballou w/ Converge at MHOW in 2012 (more by Jonathan McPhail)
Converge already have a busy 2015 ahead of them, with a big tour with At the Gates and Vallenfyre -- that hits NYC on 12/12 at Webster Hall (tickets) -- lined up, but even when Converge aren't touring or working on an album, their members seem constantly busy. We recently talked about what bassist Nate Newton is up to, frontman Jacob Bannon is always busy with Deathwish, and guitarist Kurt Ballou is always behind the boards of some of the best heavy music coming out today.
Now that it's Best-Of List Season, Kurt has given us a list of his favorite 2014 releases that he recorded, produced, and/or mixed. Here's what he had to say about it:
I'm pretty terrible at writing these "10 best albums of 2000 whatever" things because, as a recording engineer, after concentrating on music for 10 hours a day, every day in my studio, listening to music isn't a priority when the day is through. I kind of hate it, because I really love music, but I also need some time to reset my ears and brain. So, when asked to contribute to these sorts of things, I'm always a bit embarrassed to respond with, "uhhh... I'm only really familiar with the stuff I recorded." But I recorded some killer records this year, so fuck it - here's some shameless self-promotion. In no particular order, here are some of my favorite 2014 releases that I recorded, produced, and/or mixed.Self-promotion or not, it's a list of great records. Check it out, with his commentary, below...
Doomriders at House of Vans in 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
Nate Newton is a busy man. The Converge bassist has announced some shows with Doomriders, the band that he fronts, including NYC at Saint Vitus on December 5. They'll be joined by Black Black Black, Humanless and Mammal, and tickets for that show are on sale now. It's two days before they play what they're billing as their 10th Anniversary Show in Cambridge.
Before that they've got a Scandinavian tour with Louisville's fellow Deathwish signees Coliseum. Newton did double duty when Doomriders and Converge (who are touring with At the Gates) both played frontman Jacob Bannon's Deathwish Fest over the summer (which Coliseum also played).
Oh and did we forget Newton's third project? Old Man Gloom (with members of Cave in and Isis) have a new album called The Ape of God out on November 11 via Profound Lore. You've already heard "The Lash" from that album and they've since released "Predators" which you can stream below.
Oh and Newton is playing bass on the new Cavalera Conspiracy album Pandemoniom, also out in November (11/4). Hopefully Newton will have time to tour with all 4 bands. You can watch a video for a track from that below.
Check out all dates for Doomriders, a stream of the new Old Man Gloom song, and a video of a full Doomriders' set from Berlin earlier this year, also below...

Old Man Gloom -- the supergroup featuring members of Isis (THE BAND), Cave In, and Converge -- have released the first song from their forthcoming album The Ape of God out via Profound Lore on November 11. This one is called "The Lash" and if finds the Old Man Gloom Alien Simian Defence League crunching out heavy riffs in the style of their previous sonic monuments to doom. The song begins with a familiar electronic bubbling before unleashing an ultra-distorted battering that swells like a storm on the sea. You can stream it in this post.
Singer/guitarist Aaron Turner has also been busy, starting up the band Sumac and already has an album under that moniker on the way. Meanwhile, singer/guitarist Nate Newton is playing bass on the next Cavalera Conspiracy album called Pandemonium which will be released through Napalm Records on November 4.
"The Lash" streams below...

Aaron Turner w Old Man Gloom @ Europa, 5/8/12 (more by Fred Pessaro)
As announced some weeks back, Hydra Head has come to a difficult juncture in our existence and the future of the label is precarious... We've arrived at the conclusion that it is no longer possible for us to continue releasing new albums, but rather than shut the label down completely, we're hoping to be able to continue in a capacity that would allow us to preserve and perpetuate our catalog of works by the large cast of truly amazing and groundbreaking artists we've been lucky enough to work with over the years. In order to do this we're asking for help from anyone and everyone that would like to see the label continue and who is willing to support us in this effort. This is not however a request for charity - we would like to offer something in exchange for whatever level of funding our potential benefactors (that is you), are willing to bestow upon us.Hydra Head is currently offering a plaethora of goods ranging from guitar heads to test presses to stickers to original artwork and everything in between as incentive to keep classic records by bands like Botch, Oxbow, Torche, and many many others alive and in print. Head to the Hydra Head fundraiser page and pick up something, or you can just donate.
Meanwhile, Aaron Turner of Hydra Head / SIGE / Mamiffer / Old Man Gloom fame has dropped off his musings on music in 2012 in list form. Check that out below.
Old Man Gloom's hypnotic, doom-laced hardcore made its return to NYC with a show at Europa last night (5/8), flanked by support from noise-core power-duo The Austerity Program and the alienating, anti-social hardcore of Psychic Limb. The semi-Boston supercrew, which contained Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders), Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Zozobra), Aaron Turner (Isis, Split Cranium, Mamiffer, etc) and Santos Montano, is currently touring in support of its new surprise LP NO, news of which surfaced last week. The band had copies of the release at the venue last night and only a select few lucky folks managed to snag the vinyl, though cassettes were available (all?) most of the night.
Nate Newton will return to NYC in a couple weeks, this time along with Converge as support for Rorschach at Le Poisson Rouge. It'll be the second time in as many months that Converge plays NYC (check out pictures from MHoW)
Pictures/video from Europa are below, along with the Old Man Gloom setlist....
Art for Old Man Gloom's No
Old Man Gloom will welcome a new LP NO via Hydra Head this year! The band, who is currently on tour and heading towards a decimation of Brooklyn this coming week, will have copies of the record at the merch table. Unfortunately, those who can't make it to the shows will have to wait until June 16th to snag a copy. Check out a teaser trailer for the release below.
Black metal crew Assymmetry will team with Gravfolluth for a rare show at The Acheron on May 12th. $8 gets you in. The band has two demo releases on Kuunpalvelus, a label run by members of the mighty Circle of Ouroboros, and you can stream some material from them below. May 12th is a busy night, but this is their only US appearance scheduled so far... its a doozy.
Noise and ambient meets powerviolence on Gas Chamber's new 7" The Modern Vision of the Erect Nightmare, out now via Nerve Altar. The record is currently streaming in full below and available for purchase via the label. Make sure you catch them when the band hits Chaos in Tejas this year (if you're heading down that way).
Vattnet Viskar and Yellow Eyes will team up for a Broken Limbs showcase at Lit Lounge on May 14th. The band, who seemingly plays Precious Metal monthly, recently released a well-received self-titled EP which available for stream below.
Mark your calendars for May 16th at Home Sweet Home, I'll be DJing alongside Glenn from Cult of Youth and Zach from Freshkills as part of Wierd Wednesdays. The show is part of a Toxic State/Katorga Works event that will feature appearances from Massachusetts' own Cleansing Wave and Brooklyn's Nomad. More details are available on the Facebook event. My involvement aside, it's a hell of a night of punk rock.
More suggested shows and streams are below. What did I miss?
Converge at MHoW (more by Johnathan McPhail)
Converge frontman Jacob Bannon has announced plans to release a split under the moniker Wear Your Wounds with Revelator (Ben Chisholm of Chelsea Wolfe's backing band) on the other side.
We've already mentioned how Converge has been added to a monumental show with Rorschach and Xaddax (who are throwing a record release show on Tuesday at DBA).
It might be cause of today's status as an unofficial holiday of sorts, but there are a hefty amount of shows going on in the next few days... one bigger show that has seemingly flown under the radar is sweep-picking death-metal lunatics Origin with Cattle Decapitation, Decrepit Birth, Aborted, Rings of Saturn, Battlecross, Face of Ruin at Europa on April 24th. Tickets are still available, OR you can try and win a pair. Details are below. The show is part of a larger tour for the band and dates are also below.
On their way to Chaos in Tejas, The Mob (UK) will stop into Brooklyn to play Death By Audio on May 29th. The UK anarcho-punk band will be joined by Sickoids, Nomad, and Anasazi at the venue, and it'll set you back $10 at the door.
Speaking of release parties, Levil Uniform, the skater/extreme music zine, will be throwing a shownext friday at the Grand Victory for their fifteenth issue with local crew Syphilitic Lust and others playing through out the night. That same night, the great Hank Wood & The Hammerheads will bless Don Pedro's.. details are below.
Obnoxiously fun punk band Beer & Cable will officially christen the recently relaunched Acheron on May 5th as part of a show with The Regressives, Agitator, ZTs and Trepanning.
Some interesting additions to some May shows also happened this week. Meek Is Murder was tacked onto the coming Tournament show at Acheron on 5/4, while the supporting bill for the previously discussed Power Trip bill was fleshed out to include Crushed and Brain Slug.
More suggested shows, a stream of the new Rwake 7" (which only be available at their merch booth for Maryland Deathfest X, don't forget about their NYC show), a Code Orange Kids video, Homewrecker featuring Dylan Walker from Full of Hell, and a Black Breath video from their latest LP is below (don't forget about their NYC show). What did I miss?
Old Man Gloom is a sludge/doom metal/post-metal band originally formed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States [in 1999], but now based in Massachusetts. The group, formed by Aaron Turner of Isis and Santos Montano, has now expanded to become a sort of supergroup in the Boston hardcore and metalcore scene. The group is less a band than it is a recording project for a variety of talent. -[Wiki]Old Man Gloom is a project that consists of members of many bands, and I am definitely excited to hear they are banding together again for what looks like an East Coast tour (!) including a stop in Brooklyn at Europa on May 8th with The Austerity Program and Psychic Limb. Tickets for that show are on sale. All (known) tour dates are listed below.
Old Man Gloom on the road will reportedly consist of Aaron Turner (Isis, Mamiffer), Santos Montano (Zozobra), Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders), Caleb Scofield (Cave-In) and Luke Scarola. So far, no word on a follow-up to their massive Christmas LP from 2004.
