Waxahatchee / Speedy Ortiz
2013 WBAR BBQ
2013 WBAR BBQ

Barnard College's 20th annual free WBAR-B-B-Q day-long festival went down this past Saturday (4/27) on the Lehman Lawn. The show included sets by Twin Sister, Roomrunner, Waxahatchee (who had the biggest crowd of the day), Speedy Ortiz, and others. It was an outdoor show, and a pretty relaxing one, with much of the crowd lounging on the grass for a lot of the show. But riff rockers Speedy Ortiz and Roomrunner did manage to get people on their feet. And if you were there early on, they had free vegan food. Pictures from WBAR-B-Q are in this post.

You'll have other chances to catch Speedy Ortiz in NYC when their tour brings them to Silent Barn on May 17, Cake Shop on May 31 with Sleepies, and June 15 at Big Snow.

Roomrunner has other upcoming dates too, including a show on JUne 20 at Bowery Ballroom with Shannon and the Clams and Mikal Cronin (whose new album is streaming on NPR). Tickets for that show are still on sale.

And Waxahatchee's next NYC show is a free one, opening for Generationals and Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside on July 11 on Pier 84 as part of the River Rocks series.

United Nations, the shrouded supercrew containing vocalist Geoff Rickly at the helm, are playing shows in middle January, including one at Saint Vitus on January 18 with support from Brooklyn crews Primitive Weapons, Descender, and Black Clouds. Tickets are on sale. Look for the rest of UN to be comprised of Ben Koller (Converge), Lukas Previn (Thursday, Regents), and Jim Carroll (The Hope Conspiracy).

In related news, The Hope Conspiracy have stepped out of hiding to announce work on new material. No details on said material or when/where it will emerge yet.

Comadre

My best guess is that you'd probably call Bay Area band Comadre's sound an offshoot of screamo, but that dirty word is far from fitting for a band this adventurous. On their fourth and self-titled effort, due via Vitriol Records in January 2013, the band mixes bits of emotional hardcore with post-punk, Murder City Devils-style punk-n-roll, and all manner of rocking to come up with tracks like "Cold Rain", "Summercide" and the latest to slip out of the gate, "King Worm," which makes its debut here. Order yours via the label and stream it below, along with a few other tracks and live video.

Don't forget, Vitriol's Ghostlimb will play one of the last Precious Metal shows ever on January 7 at Lit Lounge, alongside The Year is One, new addition Old Wounds (who last played NYC with Gaza) and myself, Fred Pessaro, on the wheels of steel.

Streams are below...

Eager to shake off the post-tryptophan Thanksgiving blues, folks came out in droves to Acheron on Saturday (11/24) to catch the Gaza / Code Orange Kids / Full of Hell trek that also featured an appearance from localsĀ Old Wounds. Pictures and video from the chaotic Brooklyn show is below.

The trek rolls onward, heading south and west and eventually ending in Gaza's stomping grounds of Salt Lake City. Check out remaining tour dates below.

Gaza at Saint Vitus, June 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Gaza

Thanksgiving will be here soon, but don't forget some of the great shows that will go on during the days that follow the holiday! A few unmissable ones include Gaza, Code Orange Kids, Full of Hell, and Old Wounds at Acheron on 11/24 (tickets) and the Festival of the Unknown at Public Assembly. Though the lineup of the latter has yet to be revealed, I have on good authority that it will be well worth attending. Tickets are on sale.

Converge, who recently played Highline Ballroom (review), will headline the Decibel 100th issue Anniversary show in Philadelphia at Union Transfer on 1/19 (tickets). The band will be joined by Pig Destroyer, Repulsion, Municipal Waste, Tombs and Evoken. Check out the show flyer below.

That show flyer, some live video and more suggested NYC shows, below.
