Good things don't always come in pairs, but the Opeth/Enslaved tour did, and the bands gave a second helping to the NYC-area last night (5/26), a little less than a month after they played Starland Ballroom in NJ. About.com was at that Jersey show:
The Norwegian band [Enslaved] has slowly evolved from a Viking/black metal hybrid to include more progressive influences, sounding like a trip to hell with Wish You Were Here blasting out of the car speakers. Their 45-minute set was workman-like in its execution, with little time for interaction with the crowd...Opeth's US trek with Enslaved concludes in DC tonight (5/27). More pics from Grand Ballroom, and Opeth tour dates, below....
For two hours, Opeth tore the roof off the Starland Ballroom. The Swedish band played material from nearly every album, only skipping Orchid. Opening with a new tune, "Heir Apparent," frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt had a commanding stage presence from the start. Joking around with the audience about Skid Row, Bon Jovi, the swine flu, and the well-known New Jersey record store Vintage Vinyl, Åkerfeldt has a quirky sense of humor that was front and center throughout the live set....
The band sounded tight and avoided the sound issues that Enslaved ran into earlier in the night. The crowd responded well to the Watershed material, as well as fan favorites "Deliverance" and "The Leper Affinity." ...As a live band, Opeth has loosened up over the years, with Åkerfeldt breaking out of his shell and communicating better with the crowd... Opeth is arguably at the top of their game right now, and their live show is one of the reasons for that.

According to ancient Mayan prophecy, The Age Of The Fifth Sun draws to a close in 2012 when armageddon will fall upon the land. Considering this is only 2009, it is entirely possible that sunn 0)))'s soundtrack to the end of days/new album, Monoliths & Dimensions, may have been delivered a bit prematurely (out NOW). Not that a moment on Monoliths resembles anything less than meticulous detail; Attila Csihar's Bela Lugosi-like vocals, heavenly choirs, harp, trumpet, and orchestra all add to the nauseating rumble, and at times, shimmering beauty emanating from their full stacks. Pick it up at Southern Lord on CD. Vinyl is due this summer. The boys have also announced a rough sketch idea of their upcoming tour plans:
We are preparing tours as a 4 and 5 piece in support of this opus. Attila Csihar and Steve Moore (Zombi) will be in the ranks as well as a yet undecided 5th member for some shows. Randall Dunn will be on the big guns.Lots of mini-CDs to report on, as Hail of Bullets will release the limited-to-2000 five song Warsaw Rising this summer on Metal Blade and Caïna will release a self-titled MCD via Universal Tongue/Bubonic Productions. Check out a track from that Caïna, "To Pluck The Night Up By Its Skin", available above. Nachtmystium has a MCD, Doomsday Derelicts, out via Battle Kommand, and will release a new split 7" with Cyanide.
SUNN O))) "Monoliths & Dimensions" tours 2009
Midwest USA July 2-12
West coast USA August 5-11
East coast/Southeast USA September 18-30
Middle & East Europe/Scandinavia October 17 - Nov 1st
There should also be UK and Japan jaunts following those pieces. We are working on it, more to come.
We are also considering and contemplating a few special event concerts with an expanded acoustic ensemble lineup. This is a whole different ballgame but may be in the cards and we have a few loyal partners in Europe on board to help manifest if/when the time is correct.
YOB's new album for Profound Lore, The Great Cessation, now has an official release date, July 14th! The new effort by the reformed Eugene, OR doom colossus will span five tracks over it's 60+ minutes including "Burning The Altar" which is downloadable above! Look for US dates to follow, and once we have news on NYC, you know you will too.
YOB's album art, plus videos of Sleep, news on The Dillinger Escape Plan, Clutch and Baroness, Opeth, Converge, Ringworm and much more as This Week In Metal continues....

"The music was loud, furious, and frenetic. The crowd was moshing like mad. The very ground was shaking. It was a good show, to say the least." [The Mosh Pit Diaries]The pair are scheduled to make another NYC area appearance in the coming weeks, that time at The Grand Ballroom on May 26. Tickets are still available. All tour dates and more pics below....

Opeth @ Terminal 5 - May 21, 2008 (more by Chris La Putt)
Just in time to kick the summer off RIGHT, Opeth have lined up a North American tour with Enslaved (!) that will bring the pair to the NYC area on 5/1 at Starland Ballroom (on sale 2/6 at noon) and 5/26 at The Grand Ballroom at Hammerstein (on sale 2/4 at noon). Full tour dates are below.
Opeth dropped one of my favorite albums of 2008 and Enslaved dropped the excellent (cut me some slack, I had to draw the line somewhere) Vertebrae in 2008. Bloodbath, which features members of Opeth and as well as Katatonia, recently completed shooting a video for "Hades Rising" from their new-ish record The Fathomless Mastery.
All dates below...

Ya hear that rumble? Thats the sound of great records perched in the distance waiting to descend on 2009 (more on that later). While this year will bring about great music and another set of "next big things", let's take the time to be thankful for 2008 and all of it's memorable records and shows. Here are my favorite records of 2008:

Recognize those dudes? That's the original members of Clutch.... but it's also The Bakerton Group, aka "the psychedelic instrumental jazz-laden alter ego" of Maryland's finest. The Bakerton Group have recruited Per Wiberg (Opeth) for their third release, the J.Robbins (Jawbox) produced LP El Rojo!. The album will be released, on their own Weathermaker imprint, on Feb 17th, 2009. Check out the MP3 snippet of "Peruvian Airspace" above.
The Bakerton Group & The Bakerto-, er-, I mean Clutch, will tour (together?) in February around the release of El Rojo!, so look for those dates as the come up. In the meantime Clutch have some shows scheduled this month in Jersey, CT and elsewhere (dates below). In the Spring, Clutch will hit the studio to record their follow-up to From Beale Street to Oblivion. Full Fathom Five, a live CD (and separately, a DVD) dropped on Nov 11th.
Clutch/TBG skinsman extraordinaire Jean-Paul Gaster is also manning the kit on the new album by doom legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich, Punctuated Equilibrium. We previewed the record recently (and also way before that). Look for it in January 2009 on Southern Lord and check out the first track "Release Me", downloadable above.
Neil Fallon of Clutch is also frontman for The Company Band featuring members of Fireball Ministry, Fu Manchu, CKY, and Puny Human. The Company Band released their debut EP in early 2008, Sign Here, Here, & Here, with plans of a follow-up LP in 2009.

Cattle Decapitation live @ Gilman, photo by Taija Lynn
Cattle Decapitation have announced dates in support of their new record, The Harvest Floor due on 1/20/09. Supported by Psyopus, Book Of Black Earth, and Gigan, full tour dates are below, but no NYC just yet.
Adding insult on top of insult to injury, Maryland Death Fest have added powerviolence bad-asses Despise You (with Phil Vera of Crom), as well as grinders Pigsty. This is on top of Mayhem, Bolt Thrower, Enslaved and soooo many others... Unfortunately, Repulsion have cancelled their appearance.
Need a fix of fun, skull-splitting hardcore? Vitamin X have dropped their new record, Full Scale Assault on Tankcrimes and it is one awe-inspiring slab of lightning riffery and old-school hardcore punk produced by none other than Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studios. Sporting ultra-suh-weeeet artwork by John Baizley of Baroness, the band has been kind enough to drop off a pair of MP3s from the record... check out "Deal With it" featuring John Brannon of Negative Approach and "You Suck" downloadable above and pick up the album here.
How many times has a headliner you dug dropped off a bill, and you were actually pleased with the results? In a bit of shuffling, Doomriders have dropped off their bill with Tombs at Union Pool on 12/20 (frown), BUT Bloodhorse (who are working on a new record), Keelhaul(!), and Acid Tiger (Ben from Cave-in, Converge) have been added! So Keelhaul in NYC, huh? Exciting, and it sounds like they have more than just the show on their agenda...
We are going to Brooklyn to record another cd with Andrew Schneider in December. Yee haw.-[Keelhaul myspace]NOICE! Meanwhile, look for Tombs to play a show at Death By Audio on Dec 6th, play a few shows opening for Don Caballero at both Maxwell's and Europa, and embark on a short tour in the new year with Dysrhythmia. Full Keelhaul and Tombs dates are below.
Doomers My Dying Bride have revealed details of their new album, For Lies I Sire due in 2009 via Peaceville! Spanning nine tracks and recorded with producer Mags, vocalist Aaron Stainhorpe recently discussed the new record with Beyond The Dark Horizon.
Saros, the Bay Area blackened prog metal band contructed from members of the almighty Weakling and Amber Asylum, will drop their new album Acrid Plains on Profound Lore 2/17/09. Album art is below and check out the new MP3, "Reversion" available for download above.
Mammoth Grinder are scheduled to rage through the tri-state in the new year. The trio will be in town on Jan 3rd to double up.. playing shows at ABC No Rio (matinee) AND The Charleston (night) in support of their long-player Rage & Ruin and No Results 7" due together on Assassinated Records. Alternating between thundering doom and crusty hardcore, check out heavily doom-oriented "God is Stuck in a Black Hole " from Rage & Ruin, downloadable above.
Gracial death-doomers Hooded Menace are responsible for the massive Fulfill The Curse on Razorback Records. It's out NOW and it's absolutely frightening.. highly reccomended for fans of Coffins and death-doom in particular. Check out the track "Grasp Of The Beastwoman" from Fulfill The Curse and pray for your own safety that these Finns never make it to the US... it'll be a massacre.

In a heavy music equivalent of bodyblow-bodyblow-uppercut, Baroness, announced a show with Coliseum and Minsk at the Bowery Ballroom on November 22nd, part of a greater east coast tour that also includes a show at Maxwell's in Hoboken. Bowery tickets are on sale.
Baroness is about to leave on a tour with Genghis Tron that will take them through Canada before sweeping back down to the US to join the Opeth & High On Fire tour that just so happens to hit Nokia Theatre in NYC without Baroness, but with the mighty Nachtmystium, this Thursday, September 18th - tickets are still available for that.
Coliseum recently scheduled another mega-tour of their own with Torche & Clouds.
Minsk and Trouble played earlier this week at both Music Hall of Williamsburg and Knitting Factory.

Opeth live at Ruisrock 2008 (jsantala)
You thought Metal Masters was good? What about Neurosis / Mastodon / A Storm Of Light? Chew on this... The interwebs are going apey (guilty as charged) with the rumors of an Opeth / High On Fire / Baroness / Nachtmystium tour and now Blabbermouth has released a set of UNCONFIRMED tour dates, which we have now mostly confirmed. See below.
Patience, NYCers. I am sure NYC will be included, or at least that's what Akerfeldt said in May.
On a Cryptopsy-adding-a-keyboard-player note (aka please don't let it be true), rumors of a Opeth & Dream Theater collaboration are heating up in the wake of their participation in Progressive Nation tour. A partnership was actually discussed more than TWO YEARS AGO and confirmed by the band on May 11, 2006. Not sure if this is the same thing, but look for something to be announced and released soon. Tour dates below....

Fuck The Facts shall rage from sea to sea as they begin "Grinding Into Cataclysm" (their tour name) with Psyopus, War From A Harlot's Mouth, and Left To Vanish. FTF have a new record, Disgorge Mexico, due July 22nd on Relapse Records and have been kind enough to bless us with some tracks for download! Check out "The Storm" and "Absence And Despite" above and check 'em out at the Knitting Factory on August 18th (ticket info forthcoming). Full tour dates are below. Fuck The Facts also have an upcoming split LP with Leng Tch'e.
Opeth has announced two new dates as part of their previously mentioned North American tour. Here is the best part (as if THAT wasn't good enough): Word is that High On Fire & Baroness will open the shows! As more dates roll in, you'll have em, but so far all we have are Chicago on September 24th and San Fran on October 6th. Pics from their last NYC show at Terminal 5 HERE.
Doom riff lords Grand Magus will drop Iron Will on July 9th in the US via Candlelight and recently sat down with Metal Hammer to go over Iron Will track by track. Check out "Like The Oar Strikes The Water" and "Silver Into Steel" downloadable above.

"If you don't like the Scorpions, get the fuck outta here"
Mikael Åkerfeldt made clear where he drew the line during the break between songs at night one (May 21) of Opeth's two night stay at Terminal 5 - part of the "Progressive Nation" tour. The band ripped through their hour long set, drawing from from each of their last four albums as well as their new one on deck, Watershed (due June 3rd). Look for the setlist below.
What the band lacked in live energy and on-stage movement was made up in spades when it came to effortless, buttery-smooth execution. Even Åkerfeldt's unholy death growl seemed second nature as he slid from his satiny singing voice and back again.
Overall, Akerfeldt and his horror-movie-voice-over voice kept inter-song banter witty, funny, and inconsequential except for one tasty nugget of info:
"We will take a break for the summer and then be back for a North American tour in September"Dream Theater headlined both shows that also had Between the Buried & Me and 3 on the bill. Setlists and photos of all four bands (from night two - May 22), below.....

That's it. I'm calling Mayor "Doomberg" (as El-P calls him)! We need to get one of those keys-to-the-city and have the week of the 21st designated as official Neurosis & pals week.
First, you have the two killer Neurosis shows back to back at a Masonic temple (Jan 24th & 25th... and possibly with Mastodon in tow). Then on the 26th Scott Kelly (of Neurosis & now Shrinebuilder fame) and Jarboe (Swans) play a solo show at the Pussycat Lounge! Make sure to stay and check out NYC mainstays Unearthly Trance lay waste (flyer).
Speaking of the guys from Unearthly Trance..... check for them as they embark on a tour with the always great Pelican and Black Cobra (mems Acid King, and recently off tour with The Sword). Dates at the end of this post.
