Drake "at" South Street Seaport (more by Leia Jospe)
After a concert at the South Street Seaport last week was canceled when an over-capacity crowd for the rapper Drake and the pop band Hanson became rowdy and aggressive, the Seaport's owner has canceled two more planned concerts there, including a show by Kesha, the pop singer who has one of the biggest songs of the year.So to reiterate, only Paper Mag shows at the Seaport are moving/canceled (and they were never even announced yet). All announced Seaport shows go on as planned. Those include River to River Fest's Seaport Music series (which kicks off with Apples in Stereo children's show on Saturday and continues with Woven Bones & Yellow Fever on July 2nd) and the Sound Bites Lunchtime shows that have been happening on Wednesdays (the last of which is June 30th with Toys and Tiny Instruments Band).
In a letter to Community Board No. 1 of Manhattan sent on June 16, the day after the show, a representative of General Growth Properties, the mall operator that owns the Seaport, said that it had "chosen to cancel any forthcoming concerts in conjunction with Paper magazine," which organized the Drake concert, where seven people were injured and two arrested. In an interview with The New York Times last week, David Hershkovits, an editor and publisher of the magazine, said the magazine had planned for two more shows this summer, by Kesha, the "TiK ToK" singer, and the New York band Ratatat. In related news, one of the "Play Me, I'm Yours" pianos is set up at the Seaport (and so far nobody has thrown it off a balcony or anything). Videos of people playing that (including J Roddy Walston and The Business) are below...

"dear lord, i hope the Pizzeria Uno is ok" - Isfet
Chris La Putt was on hand to see Ninjasonik play less than one song at South Street Seaport this fine Tuesday evening (6/15). As previously mentioned, not counting Hanson's soundcheck, that was all the music the giant crowd got to hear. Headliners Hanson and Drake never got to perform as the cops quickly shut down the free show to be safe. They potentially either stopped or started a riot. Taking their lead, Chris ran right home. His pictures (mostly from the point of view of the photopit in front of the stage), including more of the Pizzeria Uno acrobat, and a video showing the chaos (which doesn't compare to the video that shows people throwing things), below...
Bjork @ Hiro Ballroom, April 2, 2008
Apparently, New York City ranks fourth in the world in terms of population density, and it felt as if the whole city was crowded together at PAPER's Beautiful People party held at the Hiro Ballroom last night! Californian crooner and BP cover girl Joanna Newsom performed for the throngs of rabid fans. All in all, it was a great, young, crowded, fun, laid-back party, but then all of a sudden the pressure was ON when Bjork, notoriously anti-photographer, arrived. It was my mission to document her iconic presence at our party! And I fought like a Nimiean lion to do it. I got four frames -- pop, pop, pop, pop -- just like the champagne served that evening, courtesy of Nicolas Feuillatte. The icing on the cake? H&M provide a PAPER + H&M T-shirt for all guests which read "I am a beautiful person." [PAPER Magazine]Joanna Newsom @ Hiro Ballroom, April 2, 2008
joanna newsom plays the worst show of her life at the hiro ballroom in NY tonight, april 2nd, 2008. But its not her fault...she sounded fine, but could barely be heard over the chatter of the "beautiful people (but ugly and shallow on the inside) party" via paper magazine and H&M. whatever. who am i to judge...[Tom Hayes]The same exact thing happened to Antony.

In case you missed it this weekend, Joanna Newsom is featured in the new issue of PAPER Magazine. What I didn't realize then: she is also on the cover, and that it's their annual 'beautiful people' issue (the one her friend Antony was on the cover of in 2006). Joanna Newsom tells a midget joke in one of the two videos below...
These days, she's been hanging out in New York after her two-night sold-out run at Brooklyn Academy of Music, in which she played the entirety of Ys, accompanied by the Brooklyn Philharmonic, to an enraptured audience. Newsom's Manhattan break (rumor is she's spending time with her boyfriend SNL-ster Andy Samberg) is a prelude before heading back to her home in Northern California, where she plans on taking a good chunk of time off after two straight years of touring. In the meantime, she's staying up until all hours of the early morning (Newsom's sleeping patterns have always been off-kilter, she explains), making like a flaneur through the empty cobblestone streets of the West Village, getting 9 a.m. mani-pedis and eating berries with cream for breakfast at Cafe Cluny, while flipping through copies of French Vogue.PAPER Magazine dressed up Joanna Newsom. And hey, I think I recognize those shoes in the picture below....
