Beach Fossils/The Spits/Parenthetical Girls

The second of our four SXSW day parties at connected Austin venues The Main and The Jr. happened Thursday (3/15). In addition to Cloud Nothings' joyously raucous set, The Main was fairly wild all day. We got reunited Detroit protopunk legends Death, fellow Micheganites The Spits, Pacific Northwest fuzz-freaks Milk Music, highly-excitable Canadians METZ, plus Rough Francis and Single Mothers.
Meanwhile on The Jr. stage, things were a little more indie, with a double shot headlinging sets from two Captured Tracks bands, Widowspeak and Beach Fossils. Not to mention: Dutch artist Jacco Gardner made amazingly precise recreations of late-'60s baroque pysche pop; Scotland's PAWS did raw-throated, seriously catchy yell-alongs; Parenthetical Girls kept Austin strange during their mesmerizing set; Toronto's Moon King gave a dose of shoegaze; plus Japanese singer-songwriter Shugo Tokumaru and the folky sounds of J. Thoven. What a day!
For those reading this in NYC, don't forget Parenthetical Girls play Glasslands on March 25 (tickets) and Bowery Electric on March 26 (tickets); and Jacco Gardner plays Mercury Lounge on March 23 with his Trouble in Mind labelmates Mmoss (tickets)
In addition to the music, Onkyo was there, sampling their new headphones which hit stores next month. mophie, maker of invaluable iPhone chargers, were giving away discount cards good at their pop-up shop which was set up right across the street on Red River.. We were also serving complimentary Jameson, and Zico coconut water, free vegan queso and chips from Food For Lovers, and free vegan breakfast tacos from Pink Avocado. We also had BrooklynVegan t-shirts for the first 50 people in the door, thanks to American Apparel. Also thanks to our other sponsors, Korg, Vox, Blackstar, Creative Recreation, Signazon, Mirrored Media, ASCAP, and Redigi.
Our free Friday day party at The Main and The Jr. just got underway. The Main stage will be crowded for 20-something headliners The Polyphonic Spree, and that side will also have sets from Akron/Family, The Thermals, Shout Out Louds, Diamond Rings, TOY, and Half Moon Run.
The Jr. stage today is curated by out loud brethren at Invisible Oranges, with Today is the Day, Pallbearer, Royal Thunder, Inter Arma Batillus, and Babtists.
Then tonight is the official BrooklynVegan showcase at Maggie Mae's Rooftop with 3421, Brooke Candy, Giraffage, Man Without Country, Mykki Blanco, Pictureplane, The Underachievers, XXYYXX, and Zebra Katz. If you're in Austin, come on down!
More pics from Thursday's day party are below.

As you know, BrooklynVegan is returning to Austin for SXSW this year and throwing four days of day parties at The Main & The Jr aka 603 Red River Street at the corner of 6th aka the old Emo's location. Those happen Wed (3/13), Thurs, Fri and Saturday (3/16). All shows are 100% FREE with RSVP.
We announced the Saturday lineup, and then the Friday lineup, and now HERE IS THURSDAY...

Paws at Cake Shop - 3/6/13 (via BrooklynVegan Instagram)

Scottish trio PAWS brought their raucous pop punk to the US this week, having touched down in NYC for shows at Glasslands on Tuesday (3/5) and Cake Shop last night (3/6). I caught their set in the low-ceiling, dimly lit basement of Cake Shop last night and they're just as upbeat and energetic at their shows as they are on Cokefloat!, their debut album, which came out last year. They played a bunch of choice cuts from that album like "Sore Tummy," "Catherine 1956," and "Bloodline," in addition to material off of their new cassette (if you were at the show, did you pick one up?) and an amped up cover of Big Deal's "Chair." It was a super fun show and you'll have one more chance to catch the band in NYC when they play Shea Stadium on Saturday (3/9) with Lost Boy? and Lame Drivers. A picture of PAWS' setlist from last night is below.
PAWS are also making their way down to Austin for SXSW, and while they're there, they'll play a BrooklynVegan day party on Thursday, March 14 at The Main and The Jr. (aka 603 Red River St aka the old Emo's location). They play The Jr stage with Parenthetical Girls, Jacco Gardner, and more TBA. PAWS are on at 3 PM and like all of our day parties, this one is 100% FREE with RSVP.
Updated PAWS dates are listed, along with last night's setlist and a stream of their cassette, below...

As mentioned, Scottish indie trio PAWS are over for their first American tour on their way down to SXSW. It starts with two shows in NYC: Tuesday (3/5) at Glasslands with Dinowalrus and OVLOV (tickets); and Wednesday (3/6) at Cake Shop with Shark? and EULA. All tour dates are listed below.
To commemorate the trip, the band recorded three new songs for a cassette that will only be available at merch tables on this tour. (They'll also be selling last year's great Cokefloat! LP.) However PAWS were nice enough to give us one copy of the tape to give away and details on how to win it are below. We're also premiering a stream of the entire tour cassette below.

Scottish indie rock trio PAWS have just released a video for "Sore Tummy," which is probably the catchiest song on Cokefloat!, the band's debut album that is brimming with hooks. You can watch it below.
As mentioned, PAWS are coming to America for SXSW and making a tour out of thier visit. In addition to their previously-announced show at Glasslands on March 5 with Ovlov (tickets), the band are also playing Cake Shop on March 6 (additional bands TBA) and Shea Stadium on March 9 with Total Slacker and Slam Donahue. No advance tickets for either of those shows.
A list of all PAWS tour dates, and the "Sore Tummy" video, are below...

Glasgow's PAWS released their punky noise pop debut, Cokefloat!, last year via FatCat and after touring in support of it over in Europe a bunch, they'll finally make their way over to the US this March. They don't have much booked yet but we know they'll play SXSW and on the way to Austin they'll stop in NYC for a show on March 5 at Glasslands. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.
Cokefloat! was one of the more promising debuts of 2012, and if you've yet to hear it, now that they're making their way over to our shores it'd be a good time to give it a spin. The album is packed with quick, punchy tunes that are endlessly catchy and as I've mentioned in the past, it's a must-hear for Japandroids fans. You can watch a Live 405 Session video of "Sore Tummy," a FatCat session, and listen to a spotify stream of the album below.

As you may remember us telling you, Glasgow trio PAWS are releasing their debut album, Cokefloat!, next month on FatCat Records and is loaded with mega-catchy, buzzy pop. The band just recorded a "FatCat Session" which involves them performing some of their songs live under what appears to be a very large blanket fort. We've got the premiere of the jangly, rockin' "Jellyfish" from those sessions and you can watch it below.
While PAWS have yet to eye North America, the band have announced a European tour that will have them trucking through Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and elsewhere. All tour dates are listed below, along with the "FatCat Session" video.

DOWNLOAD: PAWS - "Miss American Bookworm" (MP3)

Glasgow's PAWS have signed to FatCat Records (Frightened Rabbit, Twlight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks), and they've announced that they'll release their debut LP, Cokefloat!, on the label on October 9. They recorded the album in East London with Rory Attwell (of Test Icicles). The first single from the album, "Miss American Bookworm," is an immediately grabbing blast of noise pop that should do a lot for Japandroids fans. You can immediately grab that track above in MP3 form, or stream it below.
They only have a few dates announced at the moment (none in the US) but hopefully a full tour that brings them over to our shores is to come. All currently announced dates, the song stream, cover art and tracklist are below.
