Fucked Up at House of Vans in July (more by Chris La Putt)

Bruise Cruise II, which will take place February 10-13, 2012 off the coast of Miami, added a few more artists to their lineup earlier this month. Those additions include Fucked Up, The Togas (feat. Ty Segall, Philip Sambol of The Strange Boys, Lance Wille of Reigning Sound, and Shannon Shaw of Shannon & the Clams), Vivian Girls (DJ set), and more to be announced soon. Tickets for the cruise are on sale now.
Bruise Cruise and Panache Booking (who co-founded the cruise) have a CMJ showcase scheduled too. The showcase will take place at Public Assembly on October 22 with Shonen Knife, Cheeseburger, White Fence, Vockah Redu, Turbo Fruits, Jacuzzi Boys. and others. Tickets for the showcase are on sale now, or you can try to get in with a CMJ badge.
Panache Booking are also doing their own showcase at Knitting Factory on October 20 with Matthewdavid (who plays Highline Ballroom with Dam-Funk 5 days later), Pterodactyl, Evi Antonio, Mike Viser, and The Immaculates. TIckets are on sale now.
Speaking of Fucked Up, who just played Webster Hall with Wavves, they've got a video for the song "Do You Feed" by the fictional band Animal Man, from Fucked Up's fictional compilation album. You can watch that below. You can also watch a video of Damian Abraham dancing on stage with Yo Gabba Gabba.

Cassie & Justin as the White Stripes

"Todd P's Halloween party took place [Sunday] night at the Ridgewood Masonic Temple. most people were probably still recovering from Halloween observed the night before, but a respectable amount of ghouls and tricksters made their way to the show, headlined by so-hot-right-now hip hop ensemble Das Racist.Das Racist headlined the show of mostly locals which included a set by Vivian Girl Cassie Ramone and Justin (both in the Babies) as the White Stripes, but more notable was that The Intelligence, in from Seattle, were on also on the bill (the Intelligence also played Cake Shop one night earlier). Denver's Pictureplane, who was the special guest at the show that took place last night (11/2) at Brooklyn Bowl, was one of the artists who played too. Boshra AlSaadi aka SAADI played with Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang.Halloween is a time when you can see what people are really about. They're either in a pre-packaged costume or they're trying too hard or they are legitimately clever and good-spirited. And for Das Racist, it can be all of the above all the time. These guys walk the lines between irony and sincerity; between novelty and legitimacy; between gimmickry and credibility. And while some people show up at the party dressed as a can of Four Loko, others as zombies or superheroes, Das Racist can just take the floor as themselves and still be baffling and maybe a little frightening.
This set was, by all definitions, a shit show. You know when your friends have an inside joke and they are cracking up about it, and the joke is sort of independently funny, but not nearly as funny as your friends' uproar would suggest? Combine that feeling with the feeling of seeing your little brother get way too drunk at a party you invited him to. That was what the stage presence of Das Racist was like. And it was a fucking party." [Free Williamsburg]
Blissed Out went on right at 8:00 along with the doors opening which meant not many people around to hear their set, but the 9-band show filled up as the night went on. More pictures below...

Turbo Fruits

Between the BrooklynVegan day party on Saturday, and the show later that night at the Shank, Heavy Cream played their official CMJ showcase at the Shank. The Panache Booking show also had sets by Pujol and Turbo Fruits who both also played the Shank party, and by Norway's Tog, and Ty Segall (who played our Friday day party) though Leia's camera battery died before Ty went on. The rest of the pictures she did get, below...

Er, well, I fucked up slightly. It's my first time at The Bowery Electric and I arrive at eleven, thinking that the gig's happening until midnite. By eleven-twenty, Heavy Trash have fully climaxed, and there's not going to be an encore, despite the crowd doing an extremely good job of baying out over the rockabilly/blues disco. Even so, the Heavy Trash experience is so densely intense that such a brief exposure almost feels equivalent to most other combos playing a full gig. The Electric's an impressively cave-like basement den, and Heavy Trash are completely dominating its intimate space. The gangly Jon Spencer is going for a Mexican Elvis look, testifying down on one knee, or down on the floor, or casting his blank gaze up to the ceiling.
Having witnessed his Blues Explosion several times over the years, this is my first exposure to Heavy Trash. It's a natural evolution back in time to rockabilly, and even rock'n'roll, but fed through the Spencer grater, amped up into a frothing frenzy. He's doing his extended band-introduction speech, but the Spencer mind's going blank and he's being fazed by familiar faces in the crowd-front. All of the band are providing sweet-toned backing vocals, magnifying the cabaret-irony vibrations. Spencer's strumming an electrified acoustic guitar, with Matt Verta-Ray handling the electric-twang soloing. Reverb soaks all, not least Spencer's hiccup-ing vocals. The drums and upright bass pick up their pace and there's a full re-launch into song as the Trash deliver their final frenetic surge. Fortunately, they're playing again at Santos Party House next Tuesday nite...

As mentioned deep within another post, both JEFF the Brotherhood and Lovvers are both set to play at Union Pool on October 24 as part of a pretty killer CMJ show, along with UUVVWWZ, An Albatross, Dark Meat, Flexions, and ZzZ. So this seemed like a good opportunity to update you on the whereabouts and goings-on of these two bands, both of whom have large upcoming North American tours mapped out. All dates below.
Lovvers (pictured above) have released their debut album, OCD Go Go Girls, in the UK -- no North American date set unfortunately -- and it's a 33-minute blast of garage-y punk, indebted to '80s Twin/Tone and SST (look no further than the album's "d.boon " for proof) as well as the current L.A./The Smell scene. Noisy, but they never forget the tunes. I saw their Cake Shop show last month and they are a bundle of energy and expect you to have fun too: trying to provoke a reaction from solemn, photo-happy girl s standing at the front of the stage, singer Shaun Hencher planted a kiss right on the mouth. (Didn't work unfortunately, she stood there afterwards like it never happened.) Just warning you for when they tour again here in October (they also play Santos on October 20th). You can check out the video for OCD Go Go Girls title track (as well as live footage from the Cake Shop show) further down the post.
Nashville's awesome JEFF the Brotherhood, meanwhile, have managed to finish their album, Heavy Days, despite near constant touring. It pretty much rocks the whole way through, and is indeed heavy (three tracks on the album have that word in the title), sometimes veering into metal territory, then back into driving hard rock, with a little surf and psych in there as well. It's out October 13 on Infinity Cat. I've written about these guys plenty this year, but I will reiterate: Jake and Jamin are great live, so do go see them as they seem to be hitting most of North America between now and November where they'll be touring with Ted Leo, Ty Segall, and Shonen Knife. You can check out two tracks from Heavy Days at the top of this post. Cover art and tracklist along with all dates and videos, below...

Jennifer Herrema (ex-Royal Trux) has brought the sleaze back in town with her band RTX, first hitting up the Knitting Factory Tap Bar tonight (March 4th, tickets are still available) with locals Blues Control, Bogan Dust, and Polite Sleeper, and then Glasslands in Brooklyn tomorrow with Telepathe and Necking. If you're going to Knitting Factory tonight, note that Boris and Growing are also playing right upstairs.
Child Abuse will be on hand (the band, not the action) for the Glasslands show as well, reppin Lovepump United (Mookie Singerman from Genghis Tron's label). Lovepump United will also play host to their own shindig at SXSW this year with Monotonix, HEALTH, Clipd Beaks, Old Time Relijun, and Apes. Look for RTX to also make an appearance at the Tee Pee Records party with J. Mascis's band Witch (who have a great new album), the awesome Graveyard, Titan, and others. All dates below...
