Papa M at ATP NY 2010 (more by BBG)
Papa M (aka David Pajo of Slint, Tortoise, Zwan & more) has a few dates scheduled this summer including a short US run which takes place surrounding his appearance at Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC this September. Those dates include a NYC show at Le Poisson Rouge on September 9 with Starring. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Bon Iver at Bonnaroo 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Bon Iver recorded an iTunes session at East West studios which is available exclusively from iTunes starting today. It includes six tracks off 2011's great Bon Iver, Bon Iver and a cover of Bjork's "Who Is It?," which the band has played live many times. You can stream the session's opening track, "Beth/Rest" below.
As mentioned, Bon Iver is touring internationally throughout the summer and fall and will come to NYC on September 19 and 20 at Radio City Music Hall. Both of those shows are now sold out. All Bon Iver dates, including a recently announced European leg, are listed below.
Speaking of Bjork, she's teaming up with the New York Public Library (NYPL) and the Children's Museum of Manhattan to create interactive educational programs for middle school-aged students based on her Biophilia app. Speaking about the program, Bjork said:
"It's not a bookish thing. You cannot learn to make music from a book." "I love books; they're like the best ever," she added. "There are things you can only learn from books, but it's also important to introduce the physical aspects. So for me, it was very important to make, somehow, music education that was physical." Wu Lyf at Music Hall of Williamsburg (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
Wu Lyf's new LP is making some year-end lists and if you haven't already, you can catch the World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation on the road in the new year. The "satanist" band will head down-under for a set of dates in late January/early February, but will return for a stint in the US in April including a pair of NYC shows: Music Hall of Williamsburg on 4/26 and Bowery Ballroom on 4/27. Tickets for both shows go on AMEX presale at noon tomorrow (12/14) with regular sale hitting on Friday.
Wu Lyf recently recorded a KEXP performance which you can watch below. The session includes a cover of Papa M's "Krusty", but did not include their cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game". A video of them playing that live is in this post too though, with all tour dates (not counting Coachella?), below...

Unlike Friday (and Sunday), people weren't throwing devil horns on Saturday. With the Saturday lineup dominated by indie acts, including many longstanding ones (Sonic Youth, Tortoise, Dave Pajo/Papa M, Shellac, The Breeders, etc etc) there were less shirts that repped the heaviest of the heavy, like Dystopia, Grief and Electric Wizard, and more "vintage look" Judas Priest and Dio with bowl cuts, and 80's style librarian glasses. In other words, there was a definite crowd shift from day one to day two at the 2010 edition of ATP New York.
While cruising through the lobby on my way to my first performance, Text of Light with Lee Renaldo, I paused to catch Helen Money (on tour with Shellac) at the "Lobby Stage". The 10+ minutes of Text of Light was a bust - squalls of guitar feedback with wailing sax made for a fascinating few minutes, but grew tiresome quickly. Helen Money's looped cello was already gone by the time I had returned from the second stage, but I wish I hadn't left. Later on I would catch Frankie Don at the lobby stage, who played hits of the 70s and 80s with Casio presets while the drunk, acid-drenched, and generally out-there spazzed on the dance floor. It was my own personal Tim & Eric Awesome Show episode.
Fuck Buttons were the first band I caught on the main stage, and the tribal drumming, rumbling saw wave bass tones, and pulsing electronic soundtrack were well-represented in the Stardust Room. The band's live show stuck to their recent recorded output and was quite the contrast with my next conquest, the out-there chamber-folk of Fursaxa on stage two, complete with cello and harp. I preferred the former.
After a bit of Tortoise's jazzy math post-rock rhythms, I scooted down to Sleepy Sun (playing Knitting Factory Monday night) on the second stage; the Cali psych-rock band impressed me so much in the exact same room last year. Their set was not as impressive this time around, but more so than The Breeders who played the larger stage later that night and were a touch messy/off-key as they stammered through hits like "Divine Hammer".
On the other hand, Shellac (who also played in 2009) and Papa M killed it though in much different ways. Shellac's treble-y stomping punk rock was a triumph, and their Kutsher's set ("We are Shellac, and we only play ATP shows") included recent faves like "The End of Radio" and "Steady As She Goes". The band nixed their now famous Q&A session during their show due to their shortened set time, so their usual dry-sarcastic humor didn't play out as much this go around. Hopefully they have no curfew Tuesday at the Bell House. Papa M delivered ambient-y guitarscapes on the second stage, impressing immensely.
If you live in NYC, you've probably had your share of live Sonic Youth experiences. I've seen them at least six times. But whether it was the atmosphere, perfectly balanced soundsystem, or the band having a particularly ripping night, SY delivered probably my favorite Saturday set, focusing primarily on earlier material (Daydream Nation was a focal point it seemed). The sound in the Stardust Room was (still) flawless, and they closed out the night with a bang (set list below).
I also saw bits of Avi Buffalo, The Books and Hallogallo on Saturday. I completely missed BEAK> (stay tuned for our coverage from their Bowery Ballroom show though), Sian Alice Group, and Apse (catch them Monday and Wednesday night in NYC). I also missed Explosions in the Sky, but Sam caught them (her pics coming soon).

It's almost final and official, ATP New York is ruling. The best Hudson Valley festival to ever be held in a 1960s time capsule has announced the "final additions" including two comedians chosen by Syd Butler of Les Savy Fav (more to come... that's all "so far"), as well as a few new and interesting additions to the Jim Jarmusch curated date. There aren't many music news items that get me excited as ATP lineup additions. This one is no different. Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions, Torotoise, Bardo Pond, Beak> featuring Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Sleepy Sun, Avi Buffalo, Sunn O)) & Boris performing material from their collaborative album Altar, Dungen, and White Hills have all been added to the already-stellar bill of the 2010 festival at Kutsher's Country Club in Monticello, NY (Sept 3-5). All confirmed artists and more details below...
All Tomorrow's Parties will return to Kutsher's Country Club, Monticello for the third ATP New York festival over Labor Day weekend, running from Friday 3rd September - Sunday 5th September. We are very excited to announce that legendary film-maker Jim Jarmusch, well known for his fantastic collaborations and documentaries with musicians will be the guest curator on Sunday 5th.Jim as curator is not completely surprising since he took part in the 2009 fest as well. Four distinctly non-metal acts came together to celebrate the upcoming release of Until The Light Takes Us, a much-anticipated documentary on the Norwegian Black Metal scene written and directed by Brooklynites Aaron Aites and Audery Ewell. Aites and Ewell made themselves available for the whole show, amiably speaking to fans about the film and taking pictures in front of promotional gear sporting a pixilated harbinger of doom. The event felt less like a release party than a gathering of friends to show support however. Despite moving to Norway while making the film, Aites still has plenty of Brooklyn-informed leanings, and he tapped friend and collaborator Kyp Malone (the two play in local band Iran together) to perform with his Rain Machine project. It ended up being just Malone solo, as he performed songs from the project's self-titled debut album with just a plaintive (and at times shattering) guitar and his quivering, unpredictable vocal charms.
Malone might have a future, although maybe just a small one, in comedy or motivational speaking; he filled up the awkward pauses of a quiet audience with deadpan cracks and mildly inspirational calls to move about, if not at this show, then perhaps sometime in the future.
Dave Pajo, playing as Papa M, was probably the only musical participant that had delved into metal material in the past, but on this night he performed his critically revered post-rock album Live From a Shark Cage. Or at least part of it, because after 5 or 6 numbers, the band left the stage. His ambient, textural guitar lines grew slowly as he looped percussive guitar bits underneath the ambling melodies that joined to form a more grand harmonic synthesis. He too had his peoples out in force, as co-members of his new band Yeah Yeah Yeahs Nick Zinner and Brian Chase showed up to cheer on their collaborator and friend. Pajo plays the album again at ATP's 10th Anniversary Festival in England in December, and he'll assist Zinner and Co in performing their breakthrough debut Fever To Tell at the same event.
Overall, it was very subdued night, with only one out of the four acts even rocking a drum kit on stage. That was Soft Circle, who mixed reverb-heavy, almost surfer guitar sounds with punishing krautrock and dance punk beats, courtesy of drummer (and layering whiz) Hisham Akira Bharoocha. But after listening to all that black metal, can you really blame Aites and Ewell for toning it down a notch on this night? There will be plenty of time for bleeding ears once the movie is released. Catch it in New York starting December 4th at the Cinema Village.

A pale and heavily photoshopped David Pajo returns from church
As previously discussed, Until The Light Takes Us is the much talked about documentary chronicling the Norwegian Black Metal scene, which after months of anticipation, is FINALLY getting a theatrical release in NYC on Dec 4th (you can catch it at Cinema Village). Featuring a killer lineup of interviewees (Fenriz, Hellhammer, Frost, Abbath, Harmony Korine, and even the elusive and now free Vark Vikernes himself) as well as a soundtrack with many faves of different genres (Darkthrone, Mayhem, Ulver, Thorns, Enslaved, Boards of Canada, Black Dice, Sunn 0))), Múm, many others), fans of all types of music should be able to follow the fascinating story behind one of the most extreme musical scenes in modern history.
Maybe all of the years of research put into the documentary has burned the filmmakers out on buzzing guitars, pained vocals and frost-bitten blasts though, because they recruited bands of a different sort for their release party at Knitting Factory TONIGHT (11/18): Papa M, Rain Machine, Soft Circle, and Devendra Banhart collaborator Kevin Barker. The director of Until The Light Takes Us Aaron Aites and Rain Machine aka Kyp Malone (of TV on the Radio) are in a band together, Iran, who currently have no US dates lined up. Rain Machine have a total of four.
Papa M, aka David Pajo (who is also now in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), will be showcasing all of his 1999 LP Live From A Shark Cage at the show as one of only two US dates (the other is in San Francisco on 12/20), with a third date as part of the previously discussed and sold out Ten Years of ATP show in Minehead. Pajo is also prepping to release his new LP, Evila, which is set to blast off in early December. Full tour dates are below.
Kevin Barker, who has also been known to collaborate with Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan, and Antony and the Johnsons among many others, has one other date on his calendar, Dec 20th at The Stone. His new album You and Me is out now digitally and features many of those same people as guest musicians.
