Barclays CenteR

Like John Legend (who coincedentally cancelled way before we knew about a hurricane), Journey (the current version of them) and Pat Benatar will not be playing the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn this week.

Journey with special guests Pat Benatar featuring Neil Giraldo and Loverboy scheduled for October 30th at Barclays Center is cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy.

All on-line and phone credit card orders will be automatically refunded. Remaining refunds available at point of purchase.

Meanwhile tickets are still on sale for the Wednesday night Barclays Center Halloween Smashing Pumpkins show. UPDATE: Smashing Pumpkins postponed.

Tuesday's Freedom to Love show is also cancelled, and pretty much everything happening Monday (tonight).

Jay-Z

Jay-Z, who already owns a portion of the Brooklyn Nets, has now also been named a director at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, where the Nets will be playing and he will also be performing. NY Post reports:

As one of seven directors, the rapper and music mogul will attend board meetings and help direct arena senior staff on daily operations, Barclays Center officials confirmed today.

He's already helped the Nets design the team's Brooklyn logos and its yet-to-be-released jerseys. And he was especially hands-on in designing 11 luxury arena suites called "The Vault."

For the suites -- which run $550,000 each -- Jay-Z's fingerprints are everywhere. He even helped choose the high-end forks, napkins and champagne that will be served.

In related news, another show was added to the list of shows happening at the venue. Journey will bring their tour with Pat Benatar and Loverboy to Barclays Center on October 30. Tickets for that show went on sale today at 10 AM. For those who are interested, Journey also plays Jones Beach on August 10.

All Journey dates are listed below...

Marty Markowitz @ the 2010 Mermaid Parade (more by Chris La Putt)
Marty Markowitz

Local synagogues and worshipers filed a lawsuit filed today that threatens to pull the plug on Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz's longtime Coney Island summer concert series - along with his $64 million plan to expand them with a new amphitheater.

The suit, filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court, contends that the existing series violate a city law prohibiting amplified sound within 500 feet of religious institutions when they are in session. It seeks a court order to block future concerts.

Two synagogues -- Sea Breeze Jewish Center and Temple Beth Abraham - are across the street and about 300 feet away from the existing band shell used for concerts at Asser Levy Park. Both say they host services daily.

The seaside concert series is set to kick off its 32nd year of free shows - the 20th at Asser Levy - on July 15 with performances by Neil Sedaka and Brenda Lee.

For decades, no one challenged the concerts, but now the synagogues and many Brighton Beach residents who reside in the high-rises next to Asser Levy Park are furious over the Beep's plan to expand the shows with a new 8,000-seat amphitheater. [NY Post] (thx CJ)

The Neil Sedaka/Brenda Lee kick off show on July 15th is just one of seven Thursday night concerts scheduled for Asser-Levy Park this year, and, as the article says, the synagogue members are just pissed at Marty's plan to replace the current bandshell with the new amphitheater. In response to that Marty told the Post, "I never would have thought that in my lifetime a Jewish synagogue would try to take away joy and happiness from tens of thousands of Brooklynites out of spite."
