Brooklyn sibling duo Prince Rama will release their new album, Top Ten Hits Of The End Of The World, on November 6 via Paw Tracks. That's the cover art above, and if it looks like some used-bin '80s K-Tel compilation, the album functions in much the same way. Here's a bit from the press release:
Conceived as a pseudo-compilation album, the Brooklyn duo invented ten different pop bands that died during the apocalypse, channelling the ghosts of each one to perform the various songs. Spanning genres and stylistic eras from across the globe, Top Ten Hits explores pop music's relationship to memory, nostalgia, and the spirit world. Incorporating influences as disparate as cosmic disco, motorcycle rock, new-wave, grunge, tribal goth, Arabic pop, and ghost-modern glam, Prince Rama filters each sound through the destroyed lens of a post-apocalyptic future looking back at the wonders of its sonic past...Top Ten Hits of the End of the World isn't just a pop album, it's a retrospective requiem of all pop albums ever made. Nothing like this has ever been attempted by a single band, and its residual echoes will continue to haunt this world and the next."Ghost-modern glam"...you can't say these ladies don't have a sense of humor about themselves. Long before the album drops, you'll have a few chances to see them play. (Maybe you already did, last week at Summercreen?) Prince Rama plays the Basilica Festival in Hudson, NY on August 11 and open for Gang Gang Dance at 285 Kent on September 23. All tour dates are listed below.

Deakin @ Glasslands
"Just got back from it. Didn't stick around for the cowboys & indians dance party, though I probably should have. I was faced on mushrooms the whole night and felt like the place was being overrun by 16 year olds. Twice some dumb scantily-clad broads approached me to ask if I'd buy them drinks cos they were only "20". This was very different from the demographic I imagined Prince Rama and Deakin would be playing for.The show described above too place in Massachusetts on Tuesday. The show pictured in this post took place place at Glasslands on Monday (9/13), one night earlier. It was Deakin of Animal Collective's first NYC solo show with an assist from current tour/label mate Prince Rama, and Silk Flowers and Amen Dunes.
Really bummed out about the arrest of Michael from Prince Rama, and the subsequent abridged setlist. But still they sounded really amazing, and Deakin's set was very cool. It's a shame most people there didn't seem to give much of a shit about the live music.
Can't believe I didn't stick around longer. What did I miss? But don't tell me a bunch of half naked 18 year old girls with face paint prancing around, beseeching older men to buy them drinks. Because I was there for that.
P.S. I was the awkward weirdo in the blue hoodie.
The trek continues for Prince Rama/Deakin, who play Montreal tonight and scoot across the west coast until the end of September. After that, Prince Rama will then link up with Light Pollution for another tour that kicks off in Chicago in early October before they both play NYC on 10/21 as part of the Carpark/Paw Tracks CMJ Showcase at Cake Shop. More details on that showcase TBA.
It's unclear why the guy from Prince Rama got arrested, but the above account makes at least three times I heard about it.
Prince Rama's new LP, Shadow Temple, is out now via Paw Tracks, dig on one track from the LP, "Lightening Fossil", downloadable above. Light Pollution's new LP, Apparitions, is out now also, and features "Witchcraft" available for download above.
Full tour dates and tons of pics from Glasslands are below...

Deakin & Avey @ PS1 on July 31st (more by Andrew St. Clair)
Hot off their sets at PS1, Animal Collective's Deakin and Brooklyn's Prince Rama will be going on tour in September. The trip kicks off with a September 13th show at Glasslands with Silk Flowers and Amen Dunes. Tickets are on sale.
I think Glasslands will be Deakin's first non-DJ solo show in NYC. His first-ever solo show took place in Baltimore at the beginning of the year. The Brooklyn show is also a release party for Prince Rama's new LP, Shadow Temple, which comes out on AnCo's Paw Tracks label the day after. A track from it is above. Prince Rama have a few NYC date before that too - their full schedule is below.
Also with a new album is Avey Tare, whose debut solo record, Down There, comes out October 26th on Paw Tracks. Avey deejays at Glasslands on Friday, September 24th on a bill with Crocodiles (who have a new record). RSVP for that.
No Geologist news (vacation?).

Members of Animal Collective work on/co-own that label - which makes it no suprise that the Black Dice are going on tour with Animal Collective in May and June. About the new record, Paw Tracks writes:
REPO is the fifth album by Black Dice. The Brooklyn, NY-based trio has never worked harder at crafting a set of concise, sonically battering, or flat-out bizarre tunes than on this collection of fringe-surfing tone bombs. Yet a new roadhouse blues-band philosophy has simultaneously emerged, allowing the group to loosen up and toss off a record packed with blurry hooks and zoomed-in riffs as casually as a grizzled denizen of roadside dives might spew out aural alchemy in-between a few brews. All tour dates, with Repo art work and track list, below...

AC Newman @ the Bell House (more by Tim Griffin)
Jackson, Mississippi native Dent May grew up singing in local church groups, acting in school plays, and performing at nursing home gigs with a recorder choir. In high school, he wrote synthy power-pop with his band The Rockwells while recording erotically charged novelty tracks with friends on the side. After three unsuccessful semesters at NYU's film school, May moved to North Mississippi where he helped found the Cats Purring arts collective and formed a country-rock band called Cowboy Maloney's Electric City. In late 2007, inspired by Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood, he began performing as Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele and released a digital EP of cheeky lo-fi tunes, A Brush With Velvet. The title is a reference to The Partridge Family, episodes of which May obsessively collected and organized on VHS tapes as a teen. His debut album, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, was recorded with Rusty Santos in May's home, a double-wide trailer in Taylor, Mississippi (population: 300). He continues to perform with Cowboy Maloney's Electric City, and recently began recording dance music under the moniker Dent Sweat.Dent May's debut album will be released by Animal Collective's label Paw Tracks on February 3rd - not long after Animal Collective's own new album is released.
AC Newman is also covering A-Ha for a new Starbucks compilatiion. All AC Newman, Dent May & Broken West tour dates, below...

Kria Brekken opens for Psychic Ills & Black Dice @ Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (April 25).
Kria Brekken and Black Dice are both on the Paw Tracks label....
"Paw Tracks (formerly known as Soccer Star, then Animal) is an independent record label based in Washington, D.C. The label's website features artwork by Abby Portner (sister of Animal Collective's Avey Tare).Kria Brekken is married to, and performs with, Avey Tare of Animal Collective. They put out one album together on Paw Tracks in 2007. Some people liked it.
Although originally exclusively run by the members of Animal Collective, Paw Tracks is now co-owned by members of Carpark Records." [Wikipedia]
Others DID NOT.
