Les Savy Fav @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple in March (more by Natasha Ryan)
Les Savy Fav

For some, 9/9/09, is a special date because it is the last time we will see single-digit repeating numbers in a date until January 1, 2101. According to Livescience.com, 9/9/09 is significant to numerologists because the number 9 is, to coin a term, "yingyangy." In other words, it is
associated with noble qualities such as forgiveness, compassion and success and ignoble qualities such as arrogance and self-righteousness. Some are excited about 09/09/09 because Tim Burton's movie "9" (which reportedly has nine heroes) opens today.

But if you are a die hard Beatles fan, none of the aforementioned reasons for being jazzed about 9/9/09 (or, if you prefer, 09/09/09 or September 9, 2009 or 9/9/9) is more significant and exciting than the fact that 09/09/09 marks the day that the entire digitally remastered Beatles catalog is being released by Apple, and that "The Beatles: Rock Band" video game is being launched. Drop the Lime & live band @ Summerstage - Aug 8, 2009 (more by Sara Skolnick)
Boyz Noise

Last week in dance was great, more specifically Saturday. Unfortunately I missed Canyons at Dark Disco in the Park, but arrived just in time for Drop the Lime's live set, which was amazing. As much as I first loved the heavy bass champion's sound when I first started seeing him deejay back in '07, lately his (and the other Trouble & Bass deejays') sets have been a little too bass-heavy for me (I think I'm getting old!). However, the live set on Saturday was the perfect balance of heavy bass, awesome live drums, and great vocals. There is something about adding live elements to dance music that just can't be touched, and Drop the Lime's live act is no exception.

Boys Noize @ Summerstage - Aug 8, 2009 (more by Sara Skolnick)
Boyz Noise

I was in an excellent mood after Drop the Lime's set and it only got better as Boys Noize took the stage. From the get-go it was clear that it was going to be a great set. It included loads of new tracks and any predictability I had witnessed in some of his prior sets was gone. Check out some video of Boys Noize dropping one of his & Erol Alkan's new tracks "Waves" below:

While there aren't any discos in the park this week, there is still plenty going on dance-wise, starting with Thursday (8/13):

People Dont Dance No More

Last week/weekend I slacked off in the going out & dancing department. I missed the People Don't Dance No More Rooftop Disco BBQ which looked great and thankfully will be happening often. Friday night the heat zapped me of all energy and I skipped Tiga...and things continued down that road until Sunday when I finally went out to Studio B to see Vega.

I had just become familiar with Vega's music last week, but generally was into it and eager to see what a live show from them would be like. I wasn't too crazy about the first track they opened with, but they immediately had me with the second, "No Reasons" (video below) which sounded excellent live and is just a great poppy, dance track. Unfortunately after that something turned me off about their set. The songs were in a weird state somewhere between poppy & dancey, that I couldn't get into.

On to this week, beginning with Thursday (5/28):

Felix Cartal @ Webster Hall - February 27, 2009 (Nicky Digital)
dance

There was quite a bit going on last week, but I hardly went to any of it. I did most of my getting down at the David Byrne show Saturday night at Radio City, which I (unlike Jon Pareles) found to be a great show.

On my way home from David's show Friday night I found myself at the Studio at Webster Hall just to buy a friend a birthday drink. I caught some of Futurecop's set, but it was a bit too much, too soon after David Byrne for me to absorb any of it or make any judgment.

Fortunately I wound up sticking around and getting my ears used to hearing electronic music long enough to realize Felix Cartal was tearing it up. His set was full of bangers, many of which I hadn't heard before. One was a remix/mash-up of Daft Punk's "Oh Yeah" and "Rollin' & Scratchin'" that was sick and featured a weird little vocal periodically saying "rollin' & scratchin!". As good as Felix's set was, I was exhausted and left before he was done.

This week is brimming with good deejays and I am almost glad I won't be around to have to make any of these decisions you're going to face, specifically for Friday & Saturday night. Here's what's happening:

Congorock @ the Scion Radio party @ Plan B - February 17, 2008 (CRED)
Congorock

Last week in dance wound up being pretty amazing despite being off to a rough start (literally). Friday night Webster Hall was packed to capacity - the Justice hype is still alive. Only half of the duo (Xavier de Rosnay) was scheduled to deejay as well as Busy P. Around 12:30 Busy P opened his set with a punk song followed by "Cut Dick" by Mr. Oizo. This immediately reminded me of his set at Le Royale last March which consisted of a lot of current electronic tracks with loads of pop, rap, anything mixed throughout the set. It was one of my favorite shows last year and I was hoping for the same on Friday.

Style-wise it was - great and super varied, however, crowd-wise I was in hell. It was super crowded. We wound up in a bad spot where people were passing through every other minute and it made the whole thing (which was awesome musically) pretty much un-enjoyable. The crowd only got more intense once Xavier went on. His set was much, much better than his set at Le Royale last April. He played some new stuff, along with some electro bangers from the past year, plus a hint of pop and some dance classics and mixed it all together beautifully.

the Week in Dance continues...

Chromeo & Rude Bear @ Webster Hall - October 2, 2008 (CRED)
Chromeo

We're barely into October and signs of what a crazy month it's going to be are already showing. For me it all started Thursday night with Chromeo. Hell, even the bears were out! As always, Dave and P played a very clean, energetic set that included their entire album, Fancy Footwork, as well as a few older tracks from their first album. The crowd was losing it - singing, dancing, and screaming along in a way that I've seen only in response to these Québécois electro-poppers. In addition to being consistently good performers, Chromeo are so unassuming and appreciative of the success they've found, always making it a point to credit New York as one of the first places that welcomed them. It was a great (albeit familiar - I need some new songs!) way to start dancing in October.

Bloody BeetrootsI took a break before heading back to Webster Hall that same night, arriving just in time (after being thoroughly frisked and forced to throw out the suspicious, crumpled tissue in my pocket that was holding my earplugs) to catch the Bloody Beetroots deejay around 1. The crowd, despite being pretty decently sized, only took up about a third of the huge room. What they appeared to lack in size, was made up for in energy as about two thirds of the people there were relentlessly getting down - totally losing their shit, as the Beetroots played tons of their own tracks and reworkings. They also teased the crowd, cutting back and forth between their bangers and a few unexpected tracks like Sabotage by the Beastie Boys and Jump Around by House of Pain. Overall it was one of the crazy, relentlessly banging, unstoppable dj sets I've come to expect from the masked Italian duo. Unfortunately things seemed to be cut short after someone whispered something to them. Within minutes they were both zipping up their jackets and packing up in time for Alexander Technique to get on the decks again (he had spun earlier, right after Chromeo finished) at 2.

AtrakFriday night I found myself at Webster Hall, yet again, for the Attack of the Unibros tour featuring A-trak and Boys Noize. After far too much interaction (in the form of horrible pick-up lines and involuntary grinding) with the Webster Hall regulars the night before, I was a little nervous about going back. The novelty of the big room & loud system was beginning to wear off. I hoped the music would be great enough to help me ignore the more annoying crowd members (hopefully as the folks over at Webster are now putting together some real quality electronic line-ups, the crowds will begin to mirror that more).

When I arrived just after 1, the place was absolutely packed (even more than when MSTRKRFT deejayed back in May). There was an empty area over on the left (mainly due to the fact that the view of the deejays was totally obscured by a huge speaker stack) where I spent my time during A-trak's hour long set from 1ish to 2ish, followed by most of Boys Noize's hour long set from 2ish to 3ish, before I headed onstage for the best part - their joint set that went until about 4. Each of their sets were very good. A-trak's was heavy on a lot of new tracks I didn't know that sounded great. One I did know, was Mr. Oizo's "Positif Extract" (which I happened to post about on my blog just one day prior) which sounded absolutely AMAZING out on a loud system. I can't wait to hear it when I'm out again.

I mentioned some concerns about Boys Noize's sets getting to be a bit repetitive/seeing him deejay too often over too short a period of time last week. My concerns disappeared pretty quickly as he opened with some of his own, newer material followed by a diverse mix of current electro, devoid of any of the transitions I remembered from any of the times I saw him in the past.

Despite being up close, the stage was so packed it was difficult to see who was deejaying when they were on together, but between the two of them the tracks were all over the place in an amalgam of old and new (including Necessary Evil by Armand Van Helden, Breathe by the Prodigy, Cross the Dancefloor by Treasure Fingers, Shake & Pop by Green Velvet, and the Boys Noize remix of Justice's Phantom as well as Feist's My Moon My Man to name a few) that had everybody losing it.

As we head into week 2 of the crazy month that is October there is sure to be plenty more where that came from, starting with Thursday (10/9) and ending with a chance to win free tickets for an event this Saturday night...

Soulwax @ Irving Plaza - August 6, 2008 (CRED)
Soulwax

This simply awesome week in dance that started on Wednesday with Soulwax (they were awesome - look for the review next week) continues into this weekend, starting with Friday:

As I already mentioned (price aside) the move for Friday is Underworld at All Points West (Have you mapped out your strategy yet?). I can't stress enough what a great, live electronic music experience an Underworld show is. Tickets are still available.

It's really hard to recommend doing anything else, but here are some other things that are happening:

The Yard on a Sunday (cred)
The Yard

Despite getting a late start, I had one of the most unexpectedly awesome weekends last week. After a day of sweating it out at a bbq, and several fruitless attempts at a disco nap, I dragged myself to Studio B, arriving in the middle of Lifelike's set. After being badgered by certain individuals for months I still hadn't really checked out Lifelike. I was totally unprepared for his devastating mix of new, classic French house-influenced tracks, perfectly balanced with underplayed electro bangers (finally got to hear SMD's 'Hot Dog' on a big system). The floor was more packed than I've seen it there in a long time and everyone was absolutely losing it (and Alan Braxe hadn't even gone on yet!). Lifelike held it down until around 2:30 when Mr. Braxe went on. As much as it was great to hear French house classics from one of the people who pioneered the sound, and as crazily as I had been getting down, about an hour in things were starting to give way. Maybe it was the change in intensity from Lifelike's set to his, but somewhere around 3:30, after a numbingly long play of Daft Punk's "Rollin' & Scratchin' " I was ready to go.

Originally that was my only dance-related weekend plan, but when I was writing about Saturday & Sunday's events I really liked what I heard from Trusme. Thanks to the wonders of the G-train, what should've been a 30 minute ride to the Yard took 2 hours. I'm not even going to get into it, but if you're taking the G train, factor some time getting f-ed over by the MTA into your commute.

When I finally arrived, the Yard had a very friendly, backyard (one of the only things I desperately miss from suburbia) bbq vibe. Everyone was just hanging out, eating (Sweet Deliverance's food was amazing. I had the best veggie burger I have ever eaten.), and drinking. Nobody was really dancing yet (it was about 5:30 or 6). The later it got, the more people slowly trickled out onto the dancefloor, and by 8 when Trusme went on there was not an inch of floor to spare. Trusme's set was perfect for summer - a great blend of disco and soulful house - perfect hot weather listening. Everyone was having serious fun. I would endure my two hours of MTA-induced hell to do it all over again. That's how good it was.

Don't fret if you missed out, there are plenty more Sunday Bests on the way (plus they've been recording all the guest dj sets, including Trusme's - then them here), and it looks like Trusme and Giant Step have something in the works for July 30th at the Hudson Hotel.

That's a while away though...on to this week in dance:

People Don't Dance No More @ Love, May 22, 2008 (more by David Bruno)
People Dont Dance No More

There's a lot happening this weekend, especially at Love. Tonight (May 23) the Captain and Mathhead are back for the Take Over. You can always rely on Trouble & Bass to bring their bass-heavy sound to the floor. This special edition of the Takeover features three other crews of monthly Love residents (Sub Swara, Secret Night of Science, and Dub War) each bringing their own influences to the bass that they have in common.

Dub War was featured in an article about dubstep in the New York Times a few months ago. If you're new to dubstep, Dub War has a podcast you can check out too (@ iTunes).

Keep going for more weekend events.....

Daniel of LA Riots @ Webster Hall - May 16, 2008 *
LA Riots

Cut Copy set the bar pretty high with their very energetic and fun set Wednesday night. Luckily things continued down that path for the rest of the week. Friday night I made it to Webster Hall just in time to catch the last half hour or so of a very disco-fied set by James Murphy. He also threw in some classics which you could not help smiling at when you thought about where you were. Speaking of which...as much of a weird/hellish crowd the Webster Hall-based event drew, I really appreciated having space to dance and not sweating my ass off merely from being inside the venue. After James, LA Riots spun a great, banging set which was much more what I was expecting from them after experiencing their lower key set at Love last month. Daniel (1/2 of LA Riots -- the other half J'ob was not there) had the crowd perfectly warmed up and right where it needed to be for what can best be described as the dance explosion that ensued when JFK and AL-P got behind the decks. Things went from everyone getting down as they had been, to a sudden rush of people storming the stage and everyone in the place going accordingly bananas.

MSTRKRFT @ Webster Hall - May 16, 2008 *
MSTRKRFT @ Webster Hall

They played for about 2 hours, from 2ish-4ish and covered every great electro song you've heard recently along with tons of new stuff. For anyone who's seen them the past 2 times they were here, the set was much more along the lines of their CMJ set (which I thought was much more exciting and creative) than their one last month at Studio B...

H&LA @ Studio B - May 17, 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
Hercules and Love Affair @ Studio B

...which is where I headed Saturday night to catch Hercules & Love Affair's debut performance that everyone has been talking about since. Overall I thought it was a great show...for a debut performance. The first couple of tracks were a bit shaky, but the group quickly rebounded with "Blind" which was still good, albeit different, without Antony (see for yourself here. A few of their songs had me absolutely losing it (namely "Athene" and "You Belong") while others were just ok. I think the problem I ran into was...I kept comparing them to Escort, and in some instances found myself wishing Zena Kitt was singing in place of Nomi, though I'm not sure if that would've worked out as ideally as it did in my head. Hercules & Love Affair's tracks have a much more modern sound vs. Escort's classic disco.

Speaking of Escort, don't miss them at Brooklyn Masonic Temple on May 30th. Tickets are on sale.

At the end of Saturday night when all was said and done, I had a great time...there is nothing like live disco. Sadly that's one thing there isn't enough of, but luckily there are plenty of other great dance happenings in the city this week:

Cut Copy @ Mercury Lounge, NYC - Mar 17, 2008 (Tixgirl)
Cut Copy @ Mercury Lounge

This week in dance kicked off with a great show on Monday at the Mercury Lounge with the NYC-debut of Spain's el Guincho and a set by Australia's brilliant, live electro band Cut Copy.

The band has a refreshingly straightforward style about sharing their electro-rock tracks, offering little in the way of theatrics. But lead vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist Dan Whitford is willing to offer his appreciation to the crowd and acknowledge the impending electro climaxes, giving the audience the green light to go nuts-and it works. [TheMusic.FM]
If you missed them, they're back in May, and this weekend looks equally promising with some big names passing through town.

Pink SkullIn addition to the great Palms Out Sound showcase going on at Luna Lounge tonight (Thursday March 20), Musebox is holding their monthly at 205 featuring Pink Skull, James F!@$%^ Friedman and Johnny Cocco, and it's $5 at the door or free if you RSVP now at rsvp@themusebox.net. While Pink Skull is just deejaying, and not doing one of their energetic live performances, the band's diverse influences, numerous side projects, and recent remixes should provide the makings of a good set.

Just a few days after this show Brooklyn-based independent 12" and digital-only label the Savant Guard will make it's worldwide debut release with Pink Skull's single 'Drugs Will Keep Us Together' on March 24th. It will feature the original version of the track along with a remix that New York's own 33Hz did with Ming (from dj duo Ming+FS). Fidget house master Trevor Loveys also puts his own spin on the track. You can download the original version over at Missingtoof and stream the remixes here.
