Reigning Sound at Wicker Park Fest 2013 (more by Lindsey Best)
RS

As you may know, Memphis garage rockers Reigning Sound are releasing their new LP, Shattered, on July 15 via Merge (their first for the label), and they've been touring in support of it. That tour hit NYC for a show at Brooklyn Bowl last week (5/22). It has since been expanded and will bring them back here for a larger show on August 28 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for the Bowery Ballroom show go on sale Friday (5/30) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (5/28) at noon.

That NYC show is just before they play the Harvest Records 10th Anniversary festival in Asheville, NC (8/28-30) which also includes The Clean, Lee Fields, Mudhoney, Michael Hurley, Angel Olsen, Mount Eerie, The Sadies, Hiss Golden Messenger, DIsappears, Kevin Morby, Quilt, Pete Swanson, William Tyler, Sonny & the Sunsets, Axxa/Abraxas and many more. Full lineup below. 3-day passes are on sale now and single day passes go on sale in June.

All Reigning Sound dates are listed, with the Harvest lineup, below...

the line outside Other Music at RSD 2013 (via @brooklynvegan instagram)
RSD14

We're just a few days away from Record Store Day 2014 (April 19) and quite a few of NYC's record stores have special events planned in addition to carrying all the RSD exclusive titles (check out our picks of the top releases). Here's a rundown.

The biggest in-store, probably no surprise, is at Rough Trade which will open at 9 AM and has a full day of musical performances. Hospitality and Perfect Pussy have now been added to the already announced line-up of Amen Dunes, Betty Who, Fear of Men, Mark Mulcahy, Milagres, Nothing, Palehound, and The Rails. There will be DJs too, and they've already announced which RSD exclusive releases they'll have for sale. Band schedule below.

Generation Records in the Village also has a full day of in-stores. The store opens at 10 AM, and performers include Pour The Pirate Sherry, The Golden Grass, and Daddy Long Legs, plus DJ sets from Aaron Cometbus, Doug Gillard, Mr. Fine Wine of Downtown Soulville on WFMU, Zachary Lipez and more.

Other Music, which will turn 20 next year, will open at 10 AM for RSD. It doesn't quite have the room for in-store performances and shopping at the same time (like at Rough Trade), so they have up to this point just booked musicians as DJs. This year's line-up, though, they are doing one actual live performance, with outsider artist Lonnie Holley at 1 PM. The rest of the day is DJs and the lineup includes Pop. 1280, Com Truise, Xeno & Oaklander, Matana Roberts, Pete Swanson and more. Full schedule is listed below.

Over at Kim's Video, the store is opening early at 8 AM with "refreshments" and their own slate of DJs, including Mick Collins of the Dirtbombs, plus members of Psychic Ills, Prince Rupert's Drops, and more. Full Kim's RSD schedule below.

Alex Bleeker @ In Living Stereo, RSD 2013 (via @brooklynvegan)
IMAGE

Around the block, In Living Stereo will open at 10 AM and have in-store performances from Chaos Chaos, Call of the Wild, and Balancer. Plus, there will be free PBR all day (ID required) and if you spend more than $100 you get a free In Living Stereo beer mug.

East Village store Turntable Lab will be open from 10 AM - 8 PM with a healthy stock of RSD14 titles and guest DJs including Aaron DRM, Alex from Tokyo, Sable, Blue Jemz, Dopeshoes, and more. Full DJ lineup is in a flyer below.

Good Records in the East Village will cary a few RSD exclusives and will be putting out a special batch of vintage vinyl just for the day. They'll be posting a list of what's in that batch on their Facebook at some point.

Greenpoint's Permanent Records will be open at 10 AM with lots of RSD exclusives, plus "plenty of fun gifts and other swag to give away to our first batch of shoppers."

At the new Academy Annex location at 85 Oak St. in Greenpoint, in addition to RSD titles they'll be putting out "a great collection of used rare '90s and '00s indie rock, punk, and a ton of classic titles."

Nearby at the Captured Tracks Shop, they'll have "a bulk of RSD-exclusive titles, including RSD-exclusive titles from Captured Tracks!" Those C/T RSD titles include a live Medicine album, and a cool Flying Nun double-pack 7" with The Chills, The Verlaines and more. Not a RSD thing, but the store will be debuting monthly artist-curated record booths, the first two of which will be from Jeremy and Jarvis from Woods and Mac DeMarco. The store opens at a 11 AM for Record Store Day and will be open until 9 PM.

Bushwick's The Crate -- the storefront for Wrecords By Monkey which makes jewelry, accessories and home products out of old vinyl records -- will have it's Grand Opening on RSD, with $1 used records and new titles from local artists, plus free beer, and DJ sets from APSPDR+ and Silent Rider.

Earwax

Earwax Records, in its new N. 9th location in Williamsburg, will be open at 10 AM with a selection of RSD exclusives.

Norman's Sound & Vision, which moved from the East Village to Williamsburg a couple years ago, will have RSD exclusives and is open at 9 AM.

The Record Grouch in Greenpoint will be open regular hours (noon - 8 PM) and, while they won't be carrying any RSD exclusives, they have a stockpile of $1 records they've been holding onto just for the occasion.

Co-op 87 in Greenpoint may or may not be doing their 24-hour RSD marathon this year (they haven't decided yet) but will carry a select batch of independent label RSD exclusives as well as a whole bunch of $1 records they've been hoarding.

Halcyon Records in DUMBO has their biggest selection of RSD exclusives yet. They'll be open at 10 AM.

In the greater NY area, Fords, NJ's great Vintage Vinyl will be open at 8 AM for Record Store Day and are carrying around 300 RSD exclusive titles.

Cake Shop, who has participated in RSD the last three years, is taking this year off. The cafe and venue are still open though.

If you're going to be in the Windy City on Saturday, BV Chicago and Saki Records are teaming up again for a free Record Store Day party with live performances from Their / They're There/ ,Wedding Dress, Minor Characters, Landmarks, Meat Wave and Negative Scanner.

Please note that these stores are open year-round and need your support. In-store schedules and RSD14 flyers below...

Lonnie Holley at MHOW in 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Lonnie

Outsider artist Lonnie Holley, who we wrote about around the time of his shows with Deerhunter and Bill Callahan and who has made fans out of (and since collaborated with) Deerhunter's Bradford Cox and Black Lips' Cole Alexander, will return to NYC for two shows this week. First, he plays a night show on Tuesday (4/15) at Baby's All Right with no wave legend and experimental composer Arto Lindsay (of DNA and others), and Georgia. Georgia also joins Lonnie for his set, and maybe Arto will too? Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Then on Saturday (4/19) for Record Store Day he plays a 1 PM in-store at Other Music. The two NYC shows are Lonnie's only currently announced dates.

Other Music, which will turn 20 next year, will open at 10 AM for RSD. It doesn't quite have the room for in-store performances and shopping at the same time (like at Rough Trade), so they have up to this point just booked musicians as DJs. Lonnie's set will be the one actual live performance this year though. The rest of the day is DJs and the lineup includes Pop. 1280, Com Truise, Xeno & Oaklander, Pete Swanson, Matana Roberts and more. Full schedule is listed below.

Sun Araw w/ The Congos at LPR in 2013 (more by Greg Cristman)
Sun Araw

Sun Araw, the experimental music project of Cameron Stallones, is set to release his next album, Belomancie, on February 18 via Drag City. You can listen to one of its tracks, "Huff," along with the album artwork and tracklist below.

Sun Araw will be performing solo in NYC TONIGHT (2/3) at Body Actualized Center (143 Troutman St), though you probably won't hear the Belomancie material. He's perforimng his piece, The (3) Vases, which is billed as "a solo live musical performance of new works by Cameron Stallones." Also on the bill is ex-Emeralds guitarist Mark McGuire, who was initially billed as a DJ, but is now playing live. Maybe you just caught Mark playing at Baby's on Friday (1/31)?

Speaking of Emeralds and Sun Araw, Outer Space (John Elliott of Emeralds) and frequent Sun Araw collaborator M. Geddes Gengras are both playing this weekend's Mixology Festival which goes down in Brooklyn at Roueltte (509 Atlantic Ave). Outer Space and M Geddes Gengras play Saturday (2/8) night at 8 PM with Loud Objects (Tristan Perich and Kunal Gupta with Greg Fox of Liturgy/Guardian Alien), following a 1 PM Roulette Kids performance with Laraaji and two workshops (5 PM and 6 PM). On Friday night (2/7) at 8 PM it's Pete Swanson, Ben Vida and C. Lavender. 2-day passes are on sale now, as are tickets for Friday and Saturday.

Tonight's Sun Araw show is one of a couple upcoming dates for him, all of which are listed, along with the song stream, album artwork and tracklist, below...

EP

Meg Remy is back with a new U.S. Girls EP titled Free Advice Column, which is out Tuesday (9/24). For this one, she collaborated with Canadian hip hop producer Onakabazien to gently twist her warped girl groups sounds into new territory. Mind you the three tracks still sound like a '60s radio broadcast that have been beamed into space and refracted upon reentry, but a more beat-driven focus makes this pretty compelling. The EP also features a Onakabazien track, "Disco 2012," that features Meg's vocal's. You can stream the whole EP which makes its premiere in this post.

U.S. Girls also has shows coming up, including NYC next week at Death by Audio on September 27 with Onakabazien in tow, as well as Spacin' and DJ sets from frequent tourmate Slim Twig and Pete Swanson. Look for her during CMJ too, playing Panache's CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory on October 16 (tickets) with Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Jacco Gardner, Saint Rich, ARP, and Slim Twig; and October 17 at Silent Barn with Slim Twig, Home Comfort, Zacht Automaat, and Gem Trails.

All dates are listed, along with the EP stream and the video for its "28 Days," below...

Vessel will be coming over to North America in late September for a Decibel Festival show with Evian Christ and Huerco S., and after that he'll do some other dates including a NYC show happening on October 11 at 285 Kent. Opening the show is NYC noisemaker Pete Swanson and Philly electronic musician Container. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale now.

DOWNLOAD: Fortune Howl - "Interzone Export" (MP3)

XXYYXX at BV-SXSW 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
XXYYXX

Young upstart producer XXYYXX will be touring this summer, and as discussed, that tour brings him to NYC for two shows this week. The first happens on Friday (7/12) at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Chrome Sparks (live), Fortune Howl, and DJ True Panther Sounds. That show is totally sold out, but if you weren't able to get tickets, we're giving away a pair. Details on how to enter to win are below.

The next day, XXYYXX will head to Long Island City for this week's Warm Up at MoMA PS1 (7/13) with MK, Ryan Hemsworth, Bondax, Gobby, and James K, making for a great all around bill. Tickets for this Saturday's Warm Up are still available.

UPDATE: Pete Swanson replaced Bondax on the lineup.

If you want to keep the fun going all the way to 4 AM on Saturday after Warm Up, head to Tribeca Grand Hotel, where Ryan Hemsworth and a few others will be DJing all night (tickets). Flyer below.

XXYYXX made the mix for this week's Warm Up, and it includes tracks by Ellen Allien, Floating Points, Holly Herndon, Lapalux, Thundercat, Janet Jackson ft. Nelly, and more, in addition to a new XXYYXX song. You can stream that mix and check out the full tracklist, via FADER, below.

XXYYXX was also just added as the opener to many dates on the previously discussed CHVRCHES tour, including the NYC show on September 22 at Terminal 5. Tickets for that show are still available. After the run with CHVRCHES ends, XXYYXX will head to Austin for the just-announced Fun Fun Fun Fest. All of his tour dates are listed below.

Also in XXYYXX's mix is a new track from his Relief in Abstract labelmate/fellow Orlando resident Fortune Howl (who also opens the MHOW show). The track, titled "Interzone Export," is off of his upcoming new album, Earthbound, which is due out on July 30 via Relief in Abstract. Unlike XXYYXX, who makes future garage dancefloor bangers, Fortune Howl focuses more on songwriting and this new track sees his post-Panda Bear vocals awash in glitchy folktronica and psychedelia. We've got the MP3 downloadable above, or you can also stream it below.

All dates are listed, along with all song streams, contest details, and flyer for the Ryan Hemsworth party, below...

Pharmakon

Pharmakon will release Abandon, Margaret Chardiet's debut effort with Sacred Bones and first long-player overall. Look for it on May 14th via the label, but first check out the new track "Crawling On Bruised Knees" available for streaming below..

Chardiet's noisy, confrontational and abrasive live show is a must see, and you can catch her at a trio of upcoming NYC shows including, most imminently, the previously discussed April 7th date at 285 Kent with Jason Lescalleet and Spencer Yeh Trio (tickets) and at another show at 285 Kent on June 15th with Marshstepper, Body of Light, Lust For Youth and Foreplay as part of the Northside Festival. Ticketing info for that one is on the way, or get in with your Northside Festival badge.

Pharmakon also has one other NYC date, as part of the upcoming Red Bull Music Academy series of events, and it's a whopper:

On May 2, the Red Bull Music Academy will turn the spectacular Knockdown Center into a temple of thundering noise with some of today's most daring sound artists for Drone Activity In Progress. The night will see performances from sixteen solo artists and duos on three stages, where the sound bleed between stages is entirely intentional.
Joining Chardiet will be performances from Stephen O'Malley, KTL (Stephen O'Malley & Peter Rehberg), Body/Head (Kim Gordon & Bill Nace), Prurient, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy, Oren Ambrachi, Alan Licht, Vatican Shadow, Pete Swanson, Mick Barr, Kid Millions/Jim Sauter Duo, Alberich, Noveller, grassmass and Hiram Martinez, and $8 tickets for the show, which is one night after the big "Round Robin Duet" show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple, are on sale and will include shuttle bus service from the Jefferson L train.

All other dates and that stream is below.

Pete Swanson

Pete Swanson (formerly of Yellow Swans) will release his new EP, Punk Authority, this Tuesday (3/12) via Software/Mexican Summer. Similarly to his past work, it's an EP of eardrum-damaging technoise, and you can stream the entire thing along with the music video for "Grounds For Arrest" below. That's the album art above.

Pete will celebrate the new EP with a release party in Brooklyn on Friday (3/15) at 285 Kent. It's a Bunker party and also includes Silent Servant, Metasplice, and The Bunker's Bryan Kasenic. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Streams and video below...

Laurel Halo

In the past, Laurel Halo has made production based dance music -- like on her Hour Logic EP and the Spring EP released under her King Felix moniker -- but on her new album, Quarantine, she crafts atmospheric art pop led most heavily by her own vocals. At her show at Public Assembly on Saturday (7/21), the mix of these two sounds came across really well. She began her set turning knobs at her boards, creating layers of ambience and head knocking bass drums, and almost never took a breather. But in between her passages of psychedelic dance, she would pick up her microphone to deliver songs from Quarantine like "Thaw," "Years," "MK Ultra," and "Carcass." If you went in expecting to hear Laurel with a piano playing the bulk of Quarantine, you may have left a little disappointed, but blending the sounds of her diverse bodies of work is what makes Laurel Halo the distinct musician she is.

The show began with a set from Burning Star Core (aka C. Spencer Yeh) who rotated between the weird and the weirder, building rhythmic (but rarely melodic) sound collages of what could pass for film sound effects and tying in his frantic, off-kilter violin playing. He was followed by Noveller (aka Sarah Lipstate), who with no more than a guitar and a series of effect pedals, creates compelling melodic passages. As Sarah would close her eyes and rear her head back, she sent both herself and the crowd into a drifting state of intoxication. Then, right before Laurel Halo took the stage to close out the night, we got a set from Pete Swanson (ex-Yellow Swans) who played on the floor almost completely in the dark. He had an analog reel-to-reel tape spinning as he flicked switches and plugs, gradually turning what began as a rather straightforward four-four loop into a thick wall of noise.

As mentioned, you have many more chances to catch Laurel Halo in her hometown of NYC, including Cameo (8/2), Littlefield (8/8), and 285 Kent (9/21). Noveller will next play Secret Project Robot (8/4) as part of The Maze.

by Andrew Sacher

Laurel Halo
Laurel Halo

Brooklyn's Laurel Halo released her excellent new album, Quarantine, earlier this month and recently finished up a European tour in support of it. Now that she's back home, she's already begun scheduling local shows, including a Quarantine release party at 285 Kent on June 30 with Gatekeeper, Slava, Anenon, Wish, and DJ sets by Brenmar and Teengirl Fantasy, whose new album Laurel guests on. Tickets for that show are available.

Laurel Halo has another Brooklyn show set to take place on July 21 on Public Assembly with a great local bill of Pete Swanson, Noveller, and Burning Star Core (aka C. Spencer Yeh). As usual, New Yorkers will get plenty of more chances to catch Noveller, like at Entwine on Thursday (6/28) and at Secret Project Robot on August 4, but for Pete Swanson (ex-Yellow Swans), he's saying the Public Assembly show is likely his last NYC show for 2012. If you've yet to hear his new album, Man With Potential, you can stream it below.

Speaking of Gatekeeper, who play the 285 Kent show, they'll release their debut full length, Exo, on July 17 via Hippos in Tanks, along with an accompanying video game. Gatekeeper will celebrate Exo with a record release show in Brooklyn at Public Assembly on July 27. Thunder Horse FX will be doing visuals for their set and the bill also includes Total Freedom, James Ferraro, Yen Tech and Arca. Tickets for that show are on sale now. The show flier and Exo cover art/tracklist are below.

Continue reading "Laurel Halo playing shows; 1 w/ Gatekeeper who also have a record release show"

Oneida at Ecstatic Music Fest (more by David Andrako)

As previously mentioned, live concert recording site NYC Taper just turned five years old and is throwing a party at 285 Kent on Saturday (5/12) to celebrate, with performances by Oneida, Sightings and Prince Ruperts Drops. Joining Oneida onstage will be James McNew of Yo La Tengo/Dump fame and Greg Fox (Guardian Alien/GDFX). If you can't make it, we're going to guess someone will make an downloadable audio document of it. Meanwhile peruse NYC Taper's awesome catalog of nearly live recordings. There's nearly 1000 of them at present -- like the recent Lower Dens show at Glasslands, and the Crystal Stilts/Woods show that took place at 285 Kent last weekend. The flyer for the NYC Taper show is at the bottom of this post.

Greg Fox plays the Stone earlier the same night as part of the ongoing Buke & Gase-curated series of shows.

While we're talking about 285 Kent, tonight (5/11) the Brooklyn venue hosts an evening of electronic avant garde and noise, with former Yellow Swan man Pete Swanson, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Forma, and SSPS.

Then on Sunday (5/13), Woodsist Records is throwing a record release party for MV&EE's Space Homestead, with a live performance by the band as well as Steve Gunn and Herbcraft. MV&EE have some tour dates coming up and those are below, along with a stream of a song from the new album....
