The Who

The Who are out performing their classic 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia on a tour that came to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn last night (11/14), the first of five NYC-area dates that stretch into the new year (actually six if you count the just-announced Sandy benefit). Tickets are still on sale for those other shows, and pictures and the setlist from the Brooklyn show are in this post. .

Someone at the Greensboro show wrote:

"Concluding Quadrophenia with a stellar "Love Reign O'er Me," the encore was a string of greatest hits which ignited the crowd. "Baba O' Reilly" had the whole coliseum on it's feet reliving teenage wasteland days. Next, Townsend's guitar laid out the opening notes to "Pinball Wizard" and Daltrey seized the vocals. Daltrey was excellent on the classic "Behind Blue Eyes" while manhandling an acoustic guitar. "Who Are You" rocked the place once more before bringing the house down with "Won't Get Fooled Again." As scenes from 9/11 flashed on the video screens the power and emotion of the music could not have been clearer." [CL]

The Who

One of the most powerful elements of The Who was the collision of four distinct forces of nature into a single band: Keith Moon's insane drum fills, Entwistle's spiderlike fingers on the bass, Townsend's amazing melodicism and guitar windmills, and Daltrey's uncanny abilities as a frontman. Half of those members have moved to another plane, but we can still look forward to seeing Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend trot out all of their classic mods-vs-rockers 1973 album, Quadrophenia, as part of a round of US dates that starts in late 2012 and extends into the new year for the LP's 40th anniversary.

The tour includes four NYC area shows: 11/14 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, 12/5 at Madison Square Garden, 12/6 at Prudential Center in Newark, and 2/21 at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. Tickets for all shows go on fan presale on Friday (7/20) at 10AM, AMEX presale on Monday (7/23) at noon and regular sale on 7/27 at 10AM. All tour dates are below.

You may remember that Roger Daltrey toured all by his lonesome, performing Tommy in its entirety last year.

In perhaps more exciting news, the 1979 film adapation of Quadrophenia is getting a deluxe DVD/Blu-Ray edition from the celuloid-loving folks at Criterion who will release it on August 28. It features a newly-restored digital transfer of the uncut version, plus a new 5.1 surround mix (as well as the original stereo mix) plus a host of other cool bonus stuff which is listed below. The Rhino DVD from 2001 has been out of print for ages. If you've never seen Quadrophenia (and you should, it's great) and don't want to wait for the pristine Criterion edition, you can stream the whole movie below via YouTube, as well as listen to the album.
