Coachella 2014 - Day 2
Coachella 2014 - Day 2
Coachella 2014 - Day 2
Coachella 2014 - Day 2

Watching Ty Segall at the Outdoor Theatre to kick off my Saturday drove home a 2014 Coachella reality: the relative lack of noisy, guitar-driven bands. While the bill is loaded with synthy, electronic-leaning indie types, traditional rock acts are few and far between this year. As if to illustrate the point, late in his gloriously loud and raucous set, Segall covered "Mötörhead" by Mötörhead, one of a handful of truly heavy bands at the fest.

...I arrived 20 minutes early Saturday night [for the Pixies], just in case, but while the Mojave eventually filled and then some, things never got ugly. As for the set itself, I doubt I'll ever adjust to seeing Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering on a stage without Kim Deal, but the new-look Pixies produced a quality set nonetheless, bashing out extra-ferocious versions of "Gouge Away," "Nimrod's Son," "Crackity Jones" and more. Coachella 2014 recently wrapped up its first of two weekends. You already saw pictures of day 1, and we've got a set of day 2 pics in this post, including shots of Pet Shop Boys, Pharrell, Queens of the Stone Age, Pixies, Fatboy Slim, Lorde, Future Islands, Warpaint, Julian Casablancas, Ty Segall, Graveyard, Foxygen, Laura Mvula and more.

Of course there's too much to catch everything, but many other great artists played the second day too, including Solange whose sister Beyonce came on stage to dance with her (video below), Nas whose frenemy Jay Z joined him for "Dead Presidents II" and "Where I'm From" and Diddy (I mean Puff Daddy) joined him for "Hate Me Now" (full set video below), indie legends The Dismemberment Plan, post-rock vets Mogwai, plus sets from MGMT, Washed Out, Bombay Bicycle Club, Holy Ghost and many more.

One of the big talks of the day was Pharrell (and his hat), who brought out loads of guests who reminded the crowd that Pharrell wasn't a nobody before "Happy," "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines" (all three of which he played). He produced or co-produced huge hits for Snoop Dogg ("Drop It Like It's Hot"), Gwen Stefani ("Hollaback Girl"), Busta Rhymes ("Pass the Courvoisier") and Nelly ("Hot in Herre"), all of who joined him for said songs. A few videos from his set below.

Day 1 pics here. Day 3 pics here. More day 2 pictures, Blake Anderson of Workaholics moshing to Ty Segall included, and videos below...

Daft Punk

Daft Punk returned this year with a huge comeback album, Random Access Memories, and they've now released the album's first official video. The video is for the song "Lose Yourself to Dance," which they debuted part of during the VMAs. It was directed by the duo themselves, along with Warren Fu, Paul Hahn, and Cedric Hervet, and stars the duo along with collaborators Pharrell and Nile Rodgers. Check it out below.

Taylor Swift realizing *NSYNC appeared on stage
Taylor Swift

From many points in Brooklyn, one could look up and see the lit up blimp in the air hovering over the Barclays Center yesterday (8/25). It was where the overhead shots were being filmed during the pre-show which included the big crowds outside around the Brooklyn streets that MTV got closed down to create the red carpet for the VMAs....

A red carpet, set up on Dean Street near Flatbush Avenue, was completely invisible to many non-ticketed fans and the general public who were mainly cordoned in a pen at the Best Buy on Atlantic Avenue between Fort Greene Place and Sixth Avenue.

Another penned area, at Sixth Avenue and Bergen Street, gave a small group of fans a distant peek at the carpet, but it was still a full city block away.

"Obviously they can't let everyone in for security reasons, but we can't see anything at all," said Donna Hall, 28, who came from Queens. "I've been out here with my friends since 3 p.m. and we've been trying to find the best vantage point possible, but we settled here because at least we could see a glimpse of the red carpet. [DNA Info]

Meanwhile, during the ceremony, we got performances from Kanye West (playing "Blood on the Leaves," not "Black Skinhead"), Justin Timberlake (on-stage *NSYNC reunion included), Drake, Kendrick Lamar (joining Robin Thicke, who, um, palled around with Miley Cyrus on stage), Lady Gaga (playing her new EDM-inspired single), and more.

Daft Punk didn't perform, but they did walk the red carpet and sit in the audience in their masks which they also wore to present 'Best Female Music Video' with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. They also debuted part of the video for "Lose Yourself to Dance."

Vampire Weekend, who are headlining the Barclays Center in September, presented an award to One Direction.

Jay-Z and Beyonce were strangely nowhere to be found.

Eminem also pulled a Jay Z and announced his new album, MMLP2 (the sequel to 2000's Marshall Mathers LP), in a commercial that aired during the VMAs. The album was executive produced by Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin, and it's due out November 5. Meanwhile, the single, "Berserk," will drop this Tuesday (8/27).

And before it all began, Grimes co-hosted the Red Carpet Report. Who wore it better, Grimes or 2 Chainz?

If you watched, what did you think? Should Miley Cyrus stop being so trashy? Should Robin Thicke stop being so creepy? Should Kanye stop being so serious? Does Justin Timberlake have really long arms? Does anyone really care that *NSYNC showed up (for a minute and a half)? If you didn't watch, or need a refresher, some videos from the night are below...

You may have noticed these MSG show posters popping up around NYC....

Dr Dre

Let's face it. Kanye West would never let anyone bill him 5th on a poster, but regardless, even with the typos, this concert bill popping up around NYC that claims Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams, Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Eminem, A$AP Rocky and Andre 3000 are playing Madison Square Garden on a "Thuesday" is sure to get more than a few people excited about a show that is not actually happening.

Who would do such a thing??? Well, the likely culprit is artist Andre Saraiva who allegedly pulled a similar stunt with Daft Punk, Phoenix, Air & more in Paris. A fake Beach Boys, Phoenix, Beastie Boys (really?), The Faint & Tame Impala poster has also been seen in LA.

Thanks Nick Masi for the photo!

Pharrell Williams

Renaissance man, MC, producer and, most recently, journalist (sort of) Pharrell will play a free show at House of Vans on April 19. RSVP is free and open to the public.
The Neptunes/NERD member was recently featured on Tyler, the Creator's new album and is expected to make an appearance on Earl Sweatshirt's forthcoming effort too.

Narduwar

We're all used to seeing Vancouver DJ and Evaporators frontman, Narduwar, interviewing oodles of bands and bringing a suitcase full of props to wow them. Following an interview with Pharrell Williams, the hip hop producer officially turned the tables and interviewed the Human Serviette in a familiar heavily-gifted style. (Nardwuar first blew Pharrell's mind with his research skills in 2008.) Both took place during SXSW 2013 and you can watch them below.

T.I.

Atlanta MC T.I. is prepping to release Trouble Man, his eighth studio album, before the end of the year. Though not named after the the excellent Marvin Gaye soundtrack of the same name, as a recent listening party can attest, the LP does dip its toes into samples from that effort while logging guest spots from R. Kelly, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky, No I.D., P!nk, Cee-Lo, Pharrell Williams and more. Gotye gets into the mix via a sample on TI's track "Somebody That I Used To Know". Stream some tracks below.

In the meantime, the promotional arm is in full swing for T.I. and you can look for the MC to play some live dates. One of those goes down in NYC on December 18th at Best Buy. Tickets are on sale now.

All known tour dates, those song streams and some video is below

UPDATE: We found even MORE

FNO

As mentioned, Thursday (9/5) is Fashion's Night Out. Basically another excuse to throw a party (in the name of bringing money and attention to fashion), the evening has become music-oriented in the last few years with bands playing stores all over New York City. There's a lot of stuff going on, including the Azealia Banks / DJ Cosmo performance at M.A.C. Soho we already told you about; plus Icona Pop and Maria Minerva at Urban Outfitters; Matchbox Twenty (!?!) at Bloomingdales; Haim at Topshop; La Sera at Helmut Lang; We Were Promised Jetpacks at Rockefeller Center; and Cyndi Lauper at Manolo Blahnik, just to name a few.

Below is a list of all the shows we could find with basic details and links where applicable/helpful. All shows are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Many have free food and booze as well. For more into visit the Fashion's Night Out website. Let us know what we missed, in the comments.

Trippple Nippples

In the grand tradition of weirdo Japanese artrock come Tokyo trio Trippple Nipppleswho have been in town wreaking havoc and dropping jaws for the last week. They were originally here for a string of opening slots for Devo but have stuck around New York for a few more shows. (Maybe you saw them at Glasslands last Thursday.)

You've got three more chances to see them: tonight (12/20) they're at Pianos with Hard Nips (how could they not?) and play again at Pianos on 12/27 with The Suzan (it had to happen), and then Shea Stadium (with Hard Nips again) on January 4.

What could be described as the Japanese manic electro pixie version of Gwar, Trippple Nippples' wild stage shows are the stuff of legend, involving -- but not limited to -- milk-shooting prothetic breasts, buckets of glitter, feathers, and spaghetti. (You might want to wear old clothes.) They make music too, hyper shouty electro rock that is pretty fun on its own merits too. Pharrell Williams is a fan.

You can stream a few Trippple Nippples tracks below, and there's live footage from Glasslands and other video treats below too.
