FYF Fest 2014

FYF Fest 2014

[Slowdive's] entire audience appears to be holding its breath, immersed in the British shoegaze band's ocean of sound. The three guitarists--Neil Halstead, Christian Savill, and Rachel Goswell--are urged on by the warm throb of Nick Chaplin's bass and the vigorous drumming of Simon Scott. It's a relief to hear a drummer at the festival who isn't playing in boring old 4/4. Goswell, resplendent in a silver dress and smiling shyly, sings the hook to "Crazy for You," its circular guitar figure still captivating 20 years later. Unfortunately, her pretty voice sounds paper thin in the mix of "Machine Gun" but the reverb-y guitars sound great. During "Souvlaki Space Station," left-handed Savill plays a solo in which his slide guitar sighs as if in post-coital bliss.

One wonders whether most of these teens and twentysomethings have any idea who Slowdive is. After all, the band broke up--or, more accurately morphed into Mojave 3--when many of the attendees were in diapers. Is Slowdive cashing in on the reunion dollar or will they produce new material? One hopes for the latter. The band's multiple guitargasms are indescribably majestic and beautiful. The five-piece doesn't take the opportunity to play "Visions of LA," but "Alison" and a cover of Syd Barrett's "Golden Hair" end the set on a highpoint. Before they depart, Goswell announces they'll be back in November. Can't wait. [Under the Radar]

Governors Ball 2014

NYC music festival Governors Ball kicked off its 2014 edition yesterday (6/6) with sets from the reunited Outkast, Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, Grimes, TV on the Radio, Phoenix, Neko Case, La Roux, Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis, Washed Out, Janelle Monae, Kurt Vile, Run the Jewels (Killer Mike + El-P) and still more.

Outkast's much-anticipated set (like many of their other festival sets this year) started with both Big Boi and Andre 3000 on stage for tons of favorites right off the bat including "B.O.B.," "Gasoline Dreams, "ATLiens," "Rosa Parks," "Aquemini," "Ms. Jackson," and more. Then Big Boi did three songs alone, Andre did three alone (including "Hey Ya!" for which Janelle Monae came on stage to dance), and then another Outkast set. The second set ended with "The Whole World," for which they brought out Killer Mike to rap his verse. Pictures of all artists mentioned (and more), plus Outkast's setlist and a video of "Hey Ya!" are in this post.

GovBall continues today (6/7) with Diarrhea Planet taking the stage in about two hours (12:45 PM), and other sets include Jack White, Spoon, The Strokes, Disclosure, Broken Bells, Chance the Rapper, Deafheaven and more.

Albert Hammond Jr., who released the AHJ EP last year, has announced a few North American tour dates in June with Phoenix, most of which are in Canada. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (4/18) at noon with an AmEx presale beginning Wednesday (4/16) at noon.

Meanwhile, Julian Casablancas just played Coachella (and will do so again this weekend) and will play Governors Ball in June (so do The Strokes). All Albert Hammond Jr. tour dates are listed below.

Daft Punk
Darlin
Daft Punk

Daft Punk just won big at the Grammys, taking every category they were nominated for, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Of course, like when Arcade Fire and Bon Iver (or Bonny Bear) won Grammys, any AOTY win that wasn't Taylor Swift was likely going to inspire "Who Is Daft Punk?" questions all over social media. (I mean come on, all you have to do is leave your house to hear "Get Lucky" and you probably don't even have to do that much. Well unless you're Henry Rollins who clearly wasn't listening when James Murphy showed Daft Punk to the rock kids.)

While we're happy for Daft Punk and not wondering who they are, a new popular Reddit thread inspired us to dive back into their past a bit, before the duo strapped on their robot helmets, and were two of the three members in the rock band Darlin' (named after the Beach Boys song). You may know that the third member of that band was Laurent Brancowitz, now of Phoenix who Daft Punk played MSG with in 2010. (The story also goes that a negative Melody Maker review of Darlin' called them "a daft punky thrash," hence the name, "Daft Punk.") As with many obscurities from the past, there's plenty of Darlin' on YouTube, and you can dig into some old streams of the band below...

Queens of the Stone Age at ACL 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
QOTSA

Queens of the Stone Age made a solid comeback this year with ...Like Clockwork, an album which has ended up on many year-end lists, including NME, Rolling Stone, Paste, SPIN, Q, Mojo, Amazon and Rough Trade. We asked them to send a list of their favorite albums of the year. They're a big band, and their list mostly includes other big bands (and big solo artists), but it's also got a certain Jack White-approved compilation, and two relatively smaller artists, Earthless and Kurt Vile, so kudos to those guys for being QOTSA-approved. You can check out the full list below.

As discussed, Queens of the Stone Age will bring their tour to NYC on Saturday (12/14) at Barclays Center with The Kills. Tickets for that show are still available.

RS' Top 10 also makes room for John Fogerty, Paul McCartney, Lorde and more. Haim are at #31 for those keeping score. Phoenix at Barclays Center - 10/2/13
Phoenix
Phoenix

Phoenix played just about every hit song of theirs that you can think of. No obscure deep cuts or French songs mixed in - just what the fans would order up. After a continuous dozen or so of those songs performed without a break or much banter, Mars disappeared as his band-mates played the mostly instrumental "Love is Like a Sunset" while the screen behind the band depicted a drive through the streets of Paris. Until then the concert was low on glitz - mainly just straight singing and playing - but this was the first of a few wonderful little extras. The next was a blast of fake $100 bills into the crowdPhx-Barclays (3) before and during "Armistice", followed by Mars jumping into the crowd - not for the last time - just a foot or two away from me as he sang the anthemic "1901". Mars stayed close to the crowd, sitting at the edge of the stage with fans' hands surrounding him for the one lullaby of the evening, "Countdown". The slow song - which featured only Mars and Chris Mazzalai playing guitar - plus "If I Ever Feel Better" built the tension for "one of the first songs we ever wrote ... a dance song, so feel free to dance", "Funky Squaredance." [2bitmonkey]
Phoenix have been on a tour which currently has the band in Austin for two weekends of ACL Festival (one happened, the next starts today [10/11]) and a surprise show in a high school gym. (Not the only surprise show at a high school to happen this week.) Just before the first weekend of ACL, Phoenix stopped in NYC for a big NYC show at Barclays Center on October 2 with The Vaccines. Their set at that show leaned most heavily on their last two albums -- this year's Bankrupt! and their 2009 breakthrough, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix -- and they included a couple oldies too. Their full setlist, pictures and videos from the show are in this post.

Made In America - Day 1
Made In America - Day 1
Made In America - Day 1

"We are Phoenix, from Paris, France" lead singer Thomas Mars shouted. "Are you with us or what?"

This gave way to the dance-pop musings of "Trying To Be Cool". The main-stage fans, many of whom had waited all day through the draining and relentless heat for Beyonce, appeared to be simultaneously exhausted and excited.

Mars then laid down on the stage, foreshadowing the introduction of their riveting instrumental track "Love Like A Sunset Part 1", a song crushingly augmented by a guitar riff mixed much louder than it was on record.

Then it was time for "1901". Mars stood on the front-row barriers propped up by security as cameras and phones popped out of every orifice of the embracing audience. He then took to the sea of fans, singing as he swam across their heads until he popped up at the soundboard rafters and made his way back. [Crave Online]

The Jay Z-curated Made In America festival went down on Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway this past weekend (Saturday, 8/31 and Sunday, 9/1). The first day included sets from Beyonce, Phoenix, Empire of the Sun, Public Enemy, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky (who showed up late and played an abbreviated set), Haim, Rudimental, and more. Pictures of those artists (and a few) others are in this post. The festival also had a few last-minute punky additions on the Skate Park Stage including Cloud Nothings, Balance & Composure, and Restorations, who we unfortunately missed.

Jay Z also used the festival to announce his upcoming Magna Carta World Tour. Dates haven't been announced yet but will be soon, so stay tuned.

Some of the artists who played day 1 will be in NYC this week and next, including Haim, who play Webster Hall tonight (9/3) with IO Echo (sold out), and 2 Chainz who plays Williamsburg Park on 9/10.

Beyonce and Phoenix will also be back later this year to play Jay Z's home base, Barclays Center.

Stay tuned for day 2 pictures. A second set of day 1 pics is HERE and more of day 1 below...

Cloud Nothings at BV-SXSW 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)
Cloud Nothings

As discussed, the Jay Z-curated Budweiser Made In America Festival is returning this weekend to Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway (8/31-9/1), and the mostly pop/rap/R&B festival just got a little more, um... punk. Aside from the fact that it already included The Gaslight Anthem (who are pretty much a festival regular by now anyway), the lineup now includes Cloud Nothings, Restorations, Balance & Composure, The Front Bottoms, Diarrhea Planet, PUJOL, and more. And you thought it was weird when Jay Z saw Grizzly Bear.

UPDATE: And one more: Wavves was added to the TBA slot on Sunday.

Other non-punk additions that have happened since we last spoke include Rudimental and The Underachievers. The full schedule was also recently announced, and you can check that out below.

Many of the artists playing Made In America also have NYC or NJ shows this weekend (or soon after), including The Front Bottoms, Diarrhea Planet, Rudimental, The Underachievers, Kendrick, Ab Soul & Jay Rock, AlunaGeorge, Haim, and 2 Chainz.

Also, a number of the artists playing will be in NYC later this year to play Jay Z's stomping grounds, Barclays Center, including Phoenix, Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, and Beyonce.

Outside Lands 2013 8/9 - 8/11

As things got dark, so did the music: Phoenix lit up the Twin Peaks Stage with their chartbusting electro-pop that was inescapable from 2009-2010. On the main stage, Trent Reznor came out all shrouded in chiaroscuro for a tense set of industrial metal that has somehow remained ageless since the mid-90s. Flashes of bright white bounced off set pieces and Reznor was looking more ripped and angry than ever in a sleeveless pocket hoodie, ready to devour the microphone whole. But unlike McCartney's set on Friday night, from which we were unable to pull ourselves away, the smart kids knew to hit the buses early and make a breezy exit back towards downtown or BART or Divisadero bars - [SFist]
The sixth annual Outside Lands Music Festival happened last weekend at San Francisco's gorgeous Golden Gate Park. The second day (Saturday, 8/10) featured anticipated headlining sets from Nine Inch Nails and Phoenix, both making their way around the festival circuit this summer. Saturday's performers also included Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jurrasic 5, The Head & the Heart, The Growlers, Gary Clark Jr. and more. Pictures from those artists and more are in this post.

\Like at Lollapalooza and Firefly, and like we'll be doing again at Bumbershoot, BrooklynVegan was set up each day of Outside Lands in the Soundwave tent where our hosts Christen Thomas and Dave Hill DJ'd, told jokes and interviewed and hosted bands that were playing the fest.

Pictures from Outside Lands Day 1 are HERE and Day 3 are on the way. More from Day 2 below...

Outside Lands 2012 (more by Amoreena Lucero)
Outside Lands

Lollapalooza and Osheaga are behind us, but the summer festivals keep rolling on with San Francisco's Outside Lands this weekend (8/9-8/11). The festival is sold out, but if you've already got tickets and are going, you might like to know how to get there, and once you're there, the festival map will help you find your way around inside.

Meanwhile, if you're not going to Outside Lands, but still want to watch the fun go down, you can stream it live on Purevolume. Artists whose sets will stream live include Jessie Ware, The National, Band of Horses, Yeasayer, and more on Friday; Nine Inch Nails, Grizzly Bear, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix, The Tallest Man on Earth, Baauer, Gary Clark Jr and more on Saturday; and Vampire Weekend, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dawes, Kurt Vile, Foals, Rudimental, Camper Van Beethoven and more on Sunday.

D'Angelo has officially dropped off the festival, after recently cancelling other shows due to illness. He was replaced by Chic. You know, the band that guy who worked with Daft Punk is in.

The full Outside Lands schedule can be found at their site. Full streaming schedule below...

Lollapalooza Day 3 - 8/4/2013
Lollapalooza Day 3 - 8/4/2013

Even Goth-rockers love singalongs. After the opening synth chords, the Cure's Robert Smith begins to belt out "Just Like Heaven" and is instantly joined by a Grant Park choir numbering in the tens of thousands. Smith and his bandmates sprinkle Cure classics such as "Pictures of You" and "Friday I'm in Love" through a set that continues the weekend's '80s nostalgia theme, begun by New Order and Nine Inch Nails. Smith is in fine voice, and he even pulls off a few interpretive dance moves -- a rare bout of friskiness from a singer who still sports frazzled hair, eye shadow and lipstick. It's become his trademark, and it's turned Smith somewhat timeless -- an ageless figure still singing about a type of loss, heartache and yearning that never dissipates. [Chicago Tribune]
Lollapalooza 2013 wrapped up yesterday (8/4) with sets from Cat Power, Phoenix, The Cure, Vampire Weekend, Alt-J, Angel Haze, DIIV, Bear Mountain and more. Pictures of those (and other) artists are in this post, and we've got a second set of Sunday pics HERE on the way.

We at BrooklynVegan were also there on Sunday from 1-3 PM in the Soundwave Tent with School of Rock, Bear Mountain, and The Orwells.

TOY @ BV SXSW 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)
TOY

UK motorik shoegazers TOY were supposed to play NYC back in March while the band were coming over for SXSW. The Austin shows happened (like at one of our SXSW day shows) but NYC didn't -- a personal bummer to this writer, as their debut album was one of my favorites of 2012. Good news, TOY will be stopping in NYC on their way to the Corona Capital Fest in Mexico City, playing Glasslands on October 10. Tickets to that show go on sale Friday (7/26) at 10 AM.

The Corona Capital Fest happens October 12 & 13 at Mexico City's Hermanos Rodriguez Autodrome. You can check out the line-up -- which includes Phoenix, Arctic Monkeys, QOTSA, Vampire Weekend, The xx and more -- below and tickets are on sale now.

TOY video and Corona Capital Fest flyer are below.
