Yellow Ostrich @ Mercury Lounge on 1/4 (more by David Andrako)
Yellow Ostrich

Once January (and Linfinity) disappears, LES venue Pianos will have some more residencies to contend with. One of those is for Yellow Ostrich who will be there every Thursday night in February. All four shows including the final night with "additional secret headliner" are on sale.

ARMS are the other band taking residency at Pianos (again) in Feb, and their four Wednesday shows are also on sale. They also have a secret guest listed on their final show.

Meanwhile, as Bill pointed out, you can also catch Yellow Ostrich at Shea Stadium this Saturday night (1/15).

Full Pianos lineups so far, below...

Cross Pollination

Big announcement! Wes and I [Jay] have decided to make some big changes to Cross-Pollination. Amid a swirl of emotions, the last shows at Pianos are upon us. We'll be downstairs for the next six weeks wrapping up what some (we) would call a legendary era. We've invited back many old friends and faves. Here's how it looks so far:

AUG 3 :: Matt Singer & Sunroom
AUG 10 :: Cabin & Rana Santacruz
AUG 17 :: Misty Boyce & Luke Wesley
AUG 24 :: TBA & The Canon Logic
AUG 31 :: Chris Cubeta & Casey Shea
SEP 07 :: CROSS-POLLINATION 300!!

Just six more Cross Pollination shows at Pianos in NYC. For those not familiar, CP brings two singer-songwriter types together for individual sets followed by live collaboration (aka "cross pollination"), and they've done it 293 times so far and it's always 100% free. So what next? Well, they said Cross Pollination will continue, but where and when? "That's coming into focus. We'll let you know as blurry colors become sharp lines." Congrats in advance for 300 shows guys.

Choir of Young Believers...
Choir of Young Believers

Denmark's Choir of Young Believers were in town for a pair of pre-SXSW shows - the second of those was at Pianos on March 11th with NYC's own Arms (a band that features Todd Goldstein, formerly of Harlem Shakes).

The Pianos show was so good it gave me goosebumps. Choir of Young Believers remind me of a Zbigniew Preisner soundtrack. Really lush and melancholy, haunting melodies played with a kind of cathedral grandness. So many bands use reverb to cover up flawed vocals, but Choir of Young Believers use it to paint a giant soundscape for their music.

And ARMS might be my favorite NY band of the moment. They have such great songs, really dense full of lots of angsty minor keys, but instead of languishing in endless slow dance numbers, they keep an energetic pace. It's as if your doldrums decided to write a collection of anthems to celebrate being a little down at the mouth.

Choir of Young Believers go on to play SXSW, as do Arms, whose dates are below.

You can download a free copy of Arms' new EP above, and grab a track off Choir of Young Believers' This is for the White in Your Eyes, above. A video of the latter playing on KEXP with more pictures from Pianos, below...

Shout Out Louds

The Shout Out Louds were fantastic on Monday night (3/1). Their first show in New York in almost two years, the Swedish quintet were already in top form as they set out for an extensive tour in support of their new record Work. A 17-song set that flowed well, mixed perfectly between new and old material. Older songs like "Please, Please, Please" (from Howl Howl Gaff Gaff) led easily into "Fall Hard", arguably the best song off the new record. Adam Olenius sang with conviction and intensity and the whole band produced a swagger and confidence that they maintained throughout the show. The sold out Music Hall crowd sang along on several songs, especially "Very Loud" and later on set closer, the epic "Hard Rain", was every bit as moving as it is on record. For the encore the band played Our Ill Wills' other lengthy track. "Impossible", then finished off the show with a raucous version of "Walls", the single from the new record.

Freelance Whales opened the show which was one night before they played on the Bedford L subway platform.

Shout Out Louds also played a Tuesday night show, but theirs was in a regular club (at Pianos in Manhattan). And they play again TONIGHT (3/3). It's a secret show. Both NYC setlists and more pictures from the Brooklyn show, below...

"In celebration of the release of their new album Work, Shout Out Louds are in New York to play a sold out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn tonight. First come, first served! The show starts at 7 p.m."

Inlets @ Music Hall of Williamsburg last February (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Inlets

Inlets, the musical project of Sebastian Krueger, will finally release its long-awaited debut album, Inter Arbiter, on April 20th through twosyllable. Krueger is best known for playing with Shara Worden/My Brightest Diamond, Osso String Quartet, DM Stith and others. Inlets was established with its 2006 EP, Vestibule, and the debut album isn't short on guests either, with contributions from Zach Condon, Angel Deradoorian, and Osso's Marla Hansen. The track above, "Bright Orange Air," is a devilish piece of minor key pop.

Inlets will play a Friday, March 12th show at 92YTribeca with Bell and Glass Ghost (whose tour dates are below). Tickets are on sale.

Inlets are also playing an invite-only early show at Pianos this Friday (2/12). You can't buy tickets, but we have two pairs of tickets to give away - information on those is below.

Contest details, more album info, and all tour dates (including Inlets at SXSW) are below...

Free Energy

NEN: Your music is very reminiscent of 1970s feel-good, radio-friendly rock. Who are your influences?

Free Energy: Beethoven, Yngvie Malmsteen, Lindsey Buckingham, AC/DC, and '70s radio friendly rock.

If you could support any act in the world, who would it be?

Free Energy: Grand Funk Railroad but we'll support whichever act provides the most nutritious and lavish rider.

Free Energy played Pianos in Manhattan last night (1/21). Some pictures from that show adorn this post. Tonight (1/22) they move to Brooklyn where they will, to quote Bill, "rock Brooklyn Bowl like it's a 1982 hockey arena, and will only set you back $5, which is less than what beer costs there." One month from now the band will kick off a tour with Foreign Born. More pictures from Pianos below...

Karin Park

"I paid a visit to the LES to catch Swedish/Norwegian singer Karin Park make her NY debut. Park's band which consists of herself (vocals/keyboards) and her brother David Park (drums) took the stage at Pianos.

For those unfamiliar with her work, she plays deliciously groovy electro-pop. I myself was just recently introduced to Park's music so I wasn't sure what to expect live. It's always nice to walk into a show not knowing what to expect and walk away afterwards pleased with what you saw. While it was a short set, it was an effective set and an excellent introduction. I'm absolutely hooked on "Ashes" and "Can't Stop Now" which were both done last night and even more fun live." [Quirky New York Chick]

Nick (a rare shirt-ed moment)...
Nick Oliveri

Nick Oliveri, of Mondo Generator, The Dwarves, and former bass player for Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss, put out a collection of home-recorded songs, Death Acoustic (Impedance Records), in October '09. He's touring the US with that material (which includes covers of past projects Queens & Dwarves as well as Raw Power, GG Allin and more) this January and February. The acoustic tunes come to Pianos on Saturday, January 23rd, where he'll be joined by acoustic versions of heavy Brooklyn bands Goes Cube and Weird Owl. Tickets are on sale.

Video of Oliveri doing his acoustic thing and joking about his solo project and Queens of the Stone Age ("No one can fire me anymore!") and all tour dates are below...

Webster Hall - New Years Eve 2008 into 2009
Webster Hall

"When most Americans think of New Years Eve, the Big Apple may be one of the first things that come to mind. Millions of Americans all around the country tune in to watch the ball drop in Times Square on television as they ring in the New Year.

For those not able to make it to Manhattan for this special night, why not bring a little bit of Manhattan to your New Year's Eve party? A New York City themed New Year's Eve party requires a bit of creativity in the party planning. Brainstorm all of the things you associate with New York City from food to attractions. For food, you may want to consider having lox on bagels and cream cheese, pizza and cheesecake.

For drinks, try making Manhattan cocktails and see if there are any New York based beers available in your area; Brooklyn Lager is a popular brew." ["Have a Big Apple New Year's Eve in your living room"]

Ha. Well, for those who actually live in NYC, two more New Years Eve options are below...

Rebecca Schiffman @ BV day party @ Pianos - 10/22/09 (by Bryan Bruchman)
Rebecca Schiffman

NYC's Rebecca Schiffman, armed with just her voice and an acoustic guitar, played an early afternoon, mellow set at the BrooklynVegan day party on Thursday, October 22nd at Pianos in NYC. The above picture is from that show (she went on right after Freelance Whales). Since then she opened for Thurston Moore at a book release party in a Chelsea gallery. Video from the latter below.

Rebecca plays next on Wednesday, December 2nd at Bar Nine (807 9th Ave b/w 53rd and 54th Sts) at a free show with Teddy Blanks (who she often shares bills with) and Annie Ragz. She also plays December 6th at Zebulon with Aerial East.

The "Untitled" song above is from Rebecca's second full-length album called "To be Good for a Day" (released on January 28, 2009). Video for the same song below. Around the time of the Pianos show, she put out a digital single for the autobiographical song "Me and Katie on The U.E.S." (iTunes), which she describes as "a little like The Clash meets Avril Lavigne." The full story behind the song, and a bunch of videos, below...

Surfer Blood

After an exhausting CMJ full of shows including the BV party at Pianos on Thursday (10/22), Surfer Blood are back as part a tour that keeps them on the road for the next month. They open shows for both Art Brut and Japandroids along the way. The Florida band is one of two openers for Art Brut at Brooklyn Bowl tonight (11/13). The other is Midnight Masses.

Right before CMJ it was announced that Surfer Blood signed to Kanine Records. The Brooklyn label will release their album Astro Coast on January 19, 2010. Art Brut also plays Bowery Ballroom on Sunday (11/15), but the openers on that show are Jeffrey Lewis and Murder Mystery.

The face of Arms...
ARMS

Arms (Todd Goldstein, guitar player of the defunct Harlem Shakes) will be playing a NYC CD release show at Pianos on Thursday, November 12th for his full-length debut, Kids Aflame, which is out now on Gigantic Music. Two songs from the record are posted above, with a video and info below. Goldstein debuted his three-piece band that fills out his bedroom-recorded album at CMJ this year.

Strange Glue: Have you been to CMJ before and what are your thoughts about playing such a vibrant festival?

Todd: I've played several CMJs, now - although I have to say i've never been to a CMJ show other than my own. I never have time.

SG: Is it just you performing the Arms set or are you joined by any other talented musicians?

Todd: It'll be me, a drummer, and a bassist/singer. The harmonies alone are worth the price of admission.

Tickets for the Pianos show are on sale.

Also at the gig will be an acoustic set by Dave Monks, frontman of Tokyo Police Club. Monks will be playing some songs off Tokyo Police Club's forthcoming, second record, due in early 2010 on mom+pop.

mom+pop was formed in 2008 by Cliff Burnstein, Peter Mensch and Michael Goldstone. Burnstein and Mensch are the owners of Qprime, one of music's most respected management firms, with a roster featuring the likes of Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snow Patrol, Muse, Silversun Pickups, and The Mars Volta, among others. Goldstone is a veteran A&R exec whose most recent tenure at Sire saw him sign Regina Spektor and Tegan and Sara. In August 2008, he inked Joshua Radin as the first artist on the mom+pop label. Radin's album, Simple Times, released 21 days later on September 9, has since sold over 100,000 units and 400, 000 tracks. Other mom+pop artists include An Horse, signed to the label by Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara. mom+pop is a fully staffed label distributed independently by RED.
Radical Dads, another group that shares members (Robbie and Chris are in Uninhabitable Mansions, and Robbie, again, plays with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), are also playing, with Sherlock's Daughter (who have a residency at the club) opening.

Dave Monks recently posted a cover he did of Harlem Shakes' "Strictly Game," as well as a new TPC song. Those and more Arms below...
