Mostly-hip hop producer Dan the Automator has some pretty great work under his belt with Dr. Octagon, Deltron 3030, Gorillaz Handsome Boy Modeling School, and others, and now he's announced the debut album for his new collaborative project, Pillowfight, for which he's joined forces with singer/instrumentalist Emily Wells, who's dipped her feet in the hip hop world a few times herself, having collaborated with Buck 65 and Count Bass D. Dan and Emily also reached out to Kid Koala (who worked with Dan on Deltron 3030) and Lateef the Truthspeaker (Latyrx) and recorded their self titled album which will be out digitally and on CD January 22 and on vinyl on February 26 via Bulk Recordings.

Emily Wells @ Bowery Ballroom
Love note to New York:Emily Wells headlined Bowery Ballroom last week (4/9) as part of an ongoing tour in support of a new record. Live Footage accompany her on many dates and played first on the NYC bill. Dan the Automator, who collaborates with Emily on a new project called PILLOWFIGHT, made a special appearance just for the NYC show and DJ'd right before Emily's set. Emily played violin with Live Footage and joined Dan to perform a PILLOWFIGHT song. A drummer and members of Live Footage joined Emily on stage during her set. Here are some pics. More below...
Last night was incredible. You have made me very happy. It was an honor to play for you and the love you gave me will sit with me forever. Je t'adore.

Emily Wells @ Hotel Vegan
It may only be an opening DJ set, but it will still be interesting to see what happens tonight, 4/9, at Bowery Ballroom when Dan the Automator shares a bill with Emily Wells who he's also collaborating with for a new project called Pillowfight which performed live at SXSW. You can watch a video clip below.
Emily also played solo at SXSW, including a set at our own Hotel Vegan. Some pictures from that are in this post too.
Tonight's Bowery show is probably Emily's biggest-ever headlining show in NYC (possibly anywhere), so go out and support. Tickets are still available, and Live Footage, who are on tour with Emily, play too.
Updated tour dates, SXSW pics, Pillowfight video, and Emily's brand new IFC-premiered video for "Passenger", below...
Dan The Automator fans should get goosebumps while watching this preview for his new Pillowfight project with singer Emily Wells. The upcoming album, due later this year, also features scratches by Kid Koala (who's worked with Dan past project such at Lovage and Deltron 3030) and well as visuals by David Choe. Both videos, and two SXSW dates are listed, below.
Wells has been previewing some Pillowfight songs during some recent shows with Kid Koala (see video below). I'm digging the mix of soulful vocals with Dan's catchy beats. It's somewhat reminiscent of his Handsome Boy Modelling School track with Chan Marshall of Cat Power.
Kid Koala will be part of the group at SXSW, as will Emily Wells (who plays a BrooklynVegan day party later in the week, on Saturday to be exact). Emily headlines Bowery Ballroom in April as part of a recently announced tour in support of a new album.
Not long after SXSW, and after some dates in Canada and France, Kid Koala will come to NYC for the previously mentioned headphone concerts, except what was two shows, is now THREE. An April 4th early show was added and is on sale now (tickets for the late show and the day-before show are also still on sale).
All dates and those videos below...
