Haim / Brody Dalle / La Luz @ Sasquatch 6/1/2014
Everyone has their own opinions on what makes for a memorable day of Sasquatch. Some believe that it's a chance of a lifetime headliner. Others think that it's a day filled with warm temps and unceasing sunshine.Sasquatch 2014 came to a close on Sunday (6/1) with sets from Haim, Queens of the Stone Age, tUnE-yArDs, Rodriguez, Parquet Courts, Tycho, Kid Kudi, Elbow, John Grant, Waxahatchee, Brody Dalle, La Luz, Lucius, Bob Mould, Major Lazer, comedians like Hannibal Burress and Kate Berlant, and lots more. Pictures from Sasquatch day 3 are in this post.
But what really makes an unforgettable day at the Gorge's perennial Memorial Day festival is a day where no matter the time, there's always a mind-blowing performance to be found. The final day this year was one of those days.
Starting promptly at 1 p.m., the first few hours of the third day were stacked with some of the best female offerings that Sasquatch had provided yet. Seattle's fun loving punk rock outfit Tacocat jammed out to a jaunty set of tunes and kept the audience rapt with a combination of irreverent humor and a hurricane of bubbles that swirled in front of them. They were immediately followed on the Yeti stage by their Hardly Art label mates La Luz who kept it cool and breezy with an engaging display of their modern surf-rock sound.
The bevy of fantastic women performers continued with another epic one-two punch on the main stage starting with bona fide punk rock ass-kicker Brody Dalle. Tune-Yards kept things thumping shortly thereafter and got the crowd moving with her one of a kind, drum-driven world music inflected sound. Dozens of people burst into a legitimate full-tilt run down the gorge as she kicked into her song "Gangsta." - [The News Tribune]
Based out of LA these days, Canadian psych outfit Pink Mountaintops recently released Get Back, their first new album five years. The new record features contributions from J. Mascis, Annie Hardy (Giant Drag), and others. Always at the whims of sole constant member Stephen McBean, some of the record has a strident '80s vibe (think Clash or New Model Army) as you can hear on single "Second Summer of Love." Stream that below and you can listen to the whole thing on Rdio.
Pink Mountaintops begin a tour this week that will hit NYC on July 8 at Rough Trade. Tickets for that show are on sale today (5/21) at noon.
All dates are listed, along with the "Second Summer of Love" stream, below...

Destroyer @ Webster Hall 2011 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
While Dan Bejar muses over how to follow up Destroyer's 2011's near-perfect Kaputt (my favorite album of that year), he'll be going on a solo tour in November, playing songs from throughout his career...and maybe a couple new ones? The tour hits NYC on 11/10 at at Bowery Ballroom. Pink Mountaintops open and tickets just went on sale.
All tour dates are listed, along with the video for "Savage Night at the Opera," below.
Pink Mountaintops, the Vancouver collective led by Stephen McBean (also of Black Mountain) will be going on a short North American tour this December which kicks off in NYC on December 4 at Cake Shop and December 5 at Union Pool, the latter of which is with The Loom. No other acts have been announced for the Cake Shop date yet. No word on what the band's lineup will be for this show, but the facebook event promises "Drum machine. Electric guitar. Fuzz pedal. Good times!" All tour dates are listed below.
Pink Mountaintops' most recent album is 2009's Outside Love, which was released via Jagjaguwar. Stephen McBean recently took part in the second annual Wild Unknown Forest Party in upstate New York over the summer, where he performed "Closer to Heaven" from Outside Love, which you can watch a video of below.
The Fresh & Onlys @ Psych Fest 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels have released the initial lineup poster for the 5th annual Austin Psych Fest. This year's fest, running from April 27th - 29th (in Austin), will take place at Austin's two newest big venues, recently opened Emo's East and the soon-to-be open Beauty Ballroom which is next door.
Emo's East is now the only Emo's since their Red River location closed on 12/30, and the Beauty Ballroom is (hopefully) having their rescheduled Grand Opening on January 27th (with Theophilus London and Treasure Fingers) and continuing on January 28th.
APF will feature around 60 bands over the three day, two room event. About 40 are included in the poster below, with another 20 or so to be announced in March. Announced bands include the Black Angels (who played Emo's East on New Year's Eve), the Black Lips, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Olivia Tremor Control, Wooden Shijps, and many more. Weekend passes go on sale this Saturday (January 21st) at 12pm CST at austinpsychfest.com.
Check out photos from the 2011 edition of Psych Fest (held at Seaholm Power Plant) HERE.
Chaos in Tejas, a different kind of Austin music fest that happens in June, also announced bands on their lineup today.
SXSW, which is in March, continues to announce bands all the time and recently posted their initial schedule.

Descendents at FFFFest (more by Tim Griffin)
Much like last year, FYF Fest 2011 is poppin' off with some incredible bands, many of whom recently reunited. This year the LA fest will host a coveted Descendents appearance, a Death From Above 1979 show, Guided By Voices, another Kid Dynamite reunion, The Dead Milkmen, Explosions in the Sky, the return of The Weakerthans and many, many notable others. Full lineup is below. The show goes down at 1st and Main in downtown Los Angeles on September 3rd. Tickets are on sale.
For Kid Dynamite, which features members of Lifetime, Paint it Black and None More Black, the reunion is their first since re-emerging for This is Hardcore last year with Ink & Dagger. The band called it quits in 2000 and reunited in 2005 at CBGB and some other times too. I hope they schedule another NYC show, but it's just LA for now.
This is Hardcore THIS YEAR features an appearance from Ressurection, which also featured Dan Yemin on guitar. Tickets for This is Hardcore 2011, taking place in Philly's Starlight Ballroom, is mostly sold-out, with tickets for the Sunday show still available.
The Descendents appearance at FYFest is one of several dates scheduled for the reunited band, NYC's Roseland, Chicago Riot Fest, and Philly's Riot Fest included. Tickets are still available for the 9/23 Roseland show.
Mister Heavenly will hit the road for a string of dates on the West Coast leading up to FYF Fest. Check out their full tour schedule below, and look for their new LP Out of Love on 8/16 via Sub Pop. Check out "Pineapple Girl" from that record above.
The Death From Above 1979 appearance is one of several slated for the band in the coming months, including a 7/22 appearance at Williamsburg Waterfront. Tickets are still available OR, you can try your hand by winning a pair at our Facebook. The full set of DFA1979 dates are below.
The Weakerthans have a few other dates slated for Europe and Canada in the coming months. Hopefully they add more US dates too. All dates for now are listed below.
A few bands on the FYFest lineup (namely, Cults, Off!, and No Age) will also appear in NYC at the House of Vans this summer, and for FREE. The FYF-presented House of Vans series of shows starts this Thursday (6/30). You just have to RSVP to get in (and maybe get there early).
All Weakerthans, DFA1979, and Mister Heavenly dates, some video, and the full FYF Fest lineup is below.

Come to McBean country......
Is Stephen McBean, to quote P. Diddy, "preserving his sexy"? Stephen McBean and Pink Mountaintops are currently touring the EU on the heels of the recent release of the new album Outside Love (out now on Jagjaguwar). A month after those dates, which include the damnit-everyone-awesome-is-playing-this ATP festival in Minehead, the also-Black Mountain-er will be back on his native continent, ready to hit the road for a string of US dates including a pair in NYC: The Bell House on June 5 (tickets here) and Mercury Lounge on June 6th (tickets here).
Quest For Fire and their psyche-fuzz-rock will do the honors supporting McBean & Co, drawing from their upcoming (6/9) self-titled LP for Tee Pee Records. Made up of ex-members of The Deadly Snakes and Cursed (!), Chad Ross (guitar, vocals) and Mike Maxymuik (drums) will also pull double duty serving as members of Pink Mountaintops on the trek. Noice!
Check out new tracks from both Pink Mountaintops and Quest For Fire's latest efforts, available above, and the videos for "While We Were Dreaming" by Pink Mountaintops and "Ive Been Trying To Leave" by Quest For Fire, along with all dates, below....
