Young Magic

"Remixes Vol. 1" is a new compilation by Young Magic with "contributions by Teebs, Doldrums, Matthewdavid, Roland Tings, unreleased mixes by LA experimentalists The Acid, New York's Rioux and an exclusive mix from Nicholas Taylor of Gray (Basquiat's no-wave project)." The benefit album is available for purchase and free streaming at Bandcamp and below.

Young Magic and The Acid will team up again on June 16 for a Popgun-curated Red Bull Sound Select show at Lot 45 in Bushwick (411 Troutman St). Like all RBSS shows, this one is just $3-with-RSVP to get in. Lord Raja, who also has a Northside show coming up with Shigeto at Knitting Factory, is also on the bill.

The Acid, a trio, were last in NYC in 2014 as part of a tour in support of their Mute-released debut album. Much more recently they played a show in LA at the El Rey with Peaking Lights, and appeared on Carson Daly. Video from the TV appearance can be watched below.

The member of The Acid with the longest resume is veteran DJ/producer Adam Freeland, who among other things, is known for his remixes, like the one he did for his now-Mute labelmates Grinderman. You can also listen to that one below...

Alt-J at Glasslands, 8/7/2012 (more by Toby Tenenbaum)

Rami Haykal and Jake Rosenthal started Popgun Booking back in 2008 and in a very short amount of time became prominent tastemakers, with their homebase of Glasslands becoming one of the first stops for any new hyped band (Django Django, Savages, Palma Violets to names some recent UK ones). They also have (and in some cases still do) book shows at Cameo, Irving Plaza, Santos, Knitting Factory and more. Jake and Rami gave us a collaborative list of Popgun's favorite LPs of 2012. Check it out below.

Delicate Steve at 4Knots Festival 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
Delicate Steve

Popgun Booking is turning four years old and they're celebrating with an anniversary party at their homebase of Glasslands on Saturday (9/29) featuring performances by 8-bit partiers Anamanaguchi and instrumental wonderkind Delicate Steve and DJ sets by True Womanhood and Friendly Ghost. (They also list Mitt Romney as DJing which is probably a joke, but his schedule is open that day.) The show is FREE but you do need to RSVP.

Delicate Steve, who spent most of the summer touring his new album, will be here for CMJ too. He's playing a just-announced My Social List showcase at the Martin Room in Webster Hall on October 16 with Teen Daze, Dent May, Heavenly Beat, Mac Demarco, Bleeding Rainbow, The Young Evils and Grand Resort. Tickets are on sale now.

Anamanaguchi, meanwhile, will be touring in October and November with Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin being the trek's midpoint. All tour dates, as well as a flyer for the Popgun Anniversary party, are below.

Django Django
Django Django

We've got some more news on the Django Django front. In addition to Kwes dropping off the March 10th Glasslands show, Django Django have added a second NYC show on Monday, March 12 at Santos Party House, that BrooklynVegan is co-presenting with the folks at Neon Gold and Popgun Booking. Also playing will be Clock Opera and Charlie XCX who also share a bill on March 10 at Knitting Factory. Tickets are on sale now for the Santos show.

Clock Opera
Clock Opera

Clock Opera's debut album, Ways to Forget, is out April 9 on Moshi Moshi. You can watch the video for the new single "Once and Again" at the bottom of this post. You can also stream their fantastic, radical reworking of Metronomy's "The Bay" which is included on The English Riveria - The Unreleased Remixes.

Charli XCX
Charli XCX

London's Charli XCX got a lot of attention last year for her singles "Stay Away" and "Nuclear Seasons" both of which mined '80s New Romantic synthpop. (You can watch the videos for both below.) She's currently recording her debut album, working with bigshot producers Patrik Berger (The Good Natured, Robyn) and Ariel Rechtshaid (Glasser, Theopolis London) while still attending London's Slade School of Fine Art (she's only 19).

As mentoned above, both Clock Opera and Charli XCX are also playing Knitting Factory on Saturday March 10. That show with Sub Pop-signed Nikki & the Dove, and tickets are still on sale. And they're all playing SXSW of course (Charli's official show is the Pitchfork showcase).

Django Django have just released a stream for "Storm" which was actually the band's first single nearly three years ago. You can stream the whole Django Django album at Spotify and buy it digitally wherever high-quality MP3s are sold.

Click through for flyers for both Django Django shows, along with videos and streams mentioned above.

Django Django

We've been waiting to see Scottish quartet Django Django ever since hearing their debut single two years ago, so Brooklyn Vegan is pleased as punch to be presenting with Popgun Booking the group's first-ever U.S. show at Glasslands on Saturday, March 10. It's a late show (doors 11:30), happening after the Daughter performance early that night, and will also feature the Stateside debut of Warp artist Kwes.. Consider this our pre-SXSW kickoff party. Tickets are $10 and on sale now.

Led by drummer/singer/producer David Maclean, Django Django released their debut single "Storm/Love's Dart" in late 2009. Back when bands still used MySpace, in the "influences" section, Django Django posted thumbnails of 168 albums, ranging from The Beach Boys' Smiley Smile, the first Fun Boy 3 LP, the Blade Runner soundtrack and the Beta Band's Hot Shots II and there's a definite kitchen sink mentality to their music. It's all basically danceable guitar pop, but anything goes.

Relocating to London, the band took their time releasing their debut album, which was released a few weeks ago on Because Music (home of Metronomy, Busy P and more) and is one of the more fun, inventive pop LPs to come down the pike in a while. Influences in a Cuisinart, yes, but cohesive. Django Django get compared to the Beta Band a lot, and there's a similar vocal style and groove, but DD are a little more focused and hyperactive. It's a great album.

You can stream Django Django's debut via Spotify buy it digitally from Bleep, Emusic or the retailer of your choice. (No physical versions in the U.S. yet.) There are also videos for recent singles "Default" and "Waveforms" you can watch at the bottom of this post. After visiting New York, Django Django head to SXSW so if you're gonna be in Austin in a month, do check them out.

Opening is London's Kwes, who has made a name for himself as a go-to producer, working with The XX, DELS, Damon Albarn, Micachu, The Invisible and others. After a couple singles on Young Turks/XL, Kwes signed to Warp who will release the Meantime EP in May. While you wait for that to come out, you can download non-EP track "Get Up" via a widget at the bottom of this post. Also down there is the installment of Vice's "Producers" video series featuring Kwes, which is well worth watching.

Wu Lyf

IMPACT: So which new bands are you currently listening to?

The Drums: There's a band that played with us called io echo, they're really incredible, one of the best live shows I've seen for a long time. Also, there's a band called Wu Lyf. They're four kids out of Manchester and in order to go to their shows you have to wear a bandana over your face. They won't let you in otherwise. They only play in churches and are really mysterious.

BrooklynVegan & PopGun Booking are proud to present the NYC debut of Wu Lyf at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn on April 1st, 2011. Tickets are on sale now for what is the band's only currently scheduled North American date (don't worry, you don't need to wear a bandana to get in). Check out some videos below...
